RESUMO

This paper studies the effect of reference frame selection in sensor-to-sensor extrinsic calibration when formulated as a motion-based hand-eye calibration problem. As the sensor trajectories typically contain some composition of noise, the aim is to determine which selection strategies work best under which noise conditions. Different reference selection options are tested under varying noise conditions in simulations, and the findings are validated with real data from the KITTI dataset. The study is conducted for four state-of-the-art methods, as well as two proposed cost functions for nonlinear optimization. One of the proposed cost functions incorporates outlier rejection to improve calibration performance and was shown to significantly improve performance in the presence of outliers, and either match or outperform the other algorithms in other noise conditions. However, the performance gain from reference frame selection was deemed larger than that from algorithm selection. In addition, we show that with realistic noise, the reference frame selection method commonly used in the literature, is inferior to other tested options, and that relative error metrics are not reliable for telling which method achieves best calibration performance.

One of the key challenges in implementing reinforcement learning methods for real-world robotic applications is the design of a suitable reward function. In field robotics, the absence of abundant datasets, limited training time, and high variation of environmental conditions complicate the task further. In this paper, we review reward learning techniques together with visual representations commonly used in current state-of-the-art works in robotics. We investigate a practical approach proposed in prior work to associate the reward with the stage of the progress in task completion based on visual observation. This approach was demonstrated in controlled laboratory conditions. We study its potential for a real-scale field application, autonomous pile loading, tested outdoors in three seasons: summer, autumn, and winter. In our framework, the cumulative reward combines the predictions about the process stage and the task completion (terminal stage). We use supervised classification methods to train prediction models and investigate the most common state-of-the-art visual representations. We use task-specific contrastive features for terminal stage prediction.

This paper presents a nonlinear, universal, path-following controller for Wheeled Mobile Robots (WMRs). This approach, unlike previous algorithms, solves the path-following problem for all common categories of holonomic and nonholonomic WMRs, such as omnidirectional, unicycle, car-like, and all steerable wheels. This generality is the consequence of a two-stage solution that tackles separately the platform path-following and wheels' kinematic constraints. In the first stage, for a mobile platform divested of the wheels' constraints, we develop a general paradigm of a path-following controller that plans asymptotic paths from the WMR to the desired path and, accordingly, we derive a realization of the presented paradigm. The second stage accounts for the kinematic constraints imposed by the wheels. In this stage, we demonstrate that the designed controller simplifies the otherwise impenetrable wheels' kinematic and nonholonomic constraints into explicit proportional functions between the velocity of the platform and that of the wheels. This result enables us to derive a closed-form trajectory generation scheme for the asymptotic path that constantly keeps the wheels' steering and driving velocities within their corresponding, pre-specified bounds. Extensive experimental results on several types of WMRs, along with simulation results for the other types, are provided to demonstrate the performance and the efficacy of the method.
