RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: This study is aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of head and neck lymphoma in a defined group of an Iranian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, 126,450 biopsy reports from two referral Pathology Departments, (Tehran, the capital of Iran) were evaluated. In cases with head and neck lymphoma, other variables such as age, sex, specific location of lesions, and histopathological findings were recorded. Descriptive statistics were used to measure the prevalence and characteristics of head and neck lymphoma by means of SPSS soft ware, version 18. RESULTS: In total, 513 (0.4%) cases had head and neck lymphoma (46.9% male, 27.1% female) with a mean age of 46±6.2. Of the total lesions, 200 (0.15%) were Hodgkin lymphoma and 313 (0.25%) were non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Nodular sclerosis was the most common (62.5%) histopathological subtype among Hodgkin lymphoma. In non-Hodgkin lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (62.3%) had the highest frequency. In Hodgkin disease, classic Hodgkin lymphocytic rich, mixed cellularity, and lymphocyte depletion were only seen in the neck compartment. Bone involvement was only found in Hodgkin nodular lymphocytic predominant variation. In non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the tongue, palate, and vestibular mucosa were affected only by diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Jaw bones were only involved with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma compared to other bony structures. T-cell lymphoma and mucosal associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma were also found. CONCLUSION: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma especially in the tongue, palate, vestibular mucosa, and jaw bones.

RESUMO

We present here a 32-year-old male with advanced lately diagnosed, right sided retroperitoneal mass, which had been already treated due to progressive muco-cutaneous lesions clinically consistent with psoriasis, during recent four years. The advanced retroperitoneal mass resected surgically and reported as hyaline-vascular castleman disease with a dense focus of coarse calcification, on histopathology. Association of psoriasis and castlman disease is discussed in this case report.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve repair is often complicated by fibroblastic scar formation, nerve dysfunction, and traumatic neuroma formation. Use of silicone may improve outcomes of these repairs. In this study, we tried to evaluate effectiveness of silicone gel on rats' sciatic nerve repair, axon regeneration and scar formation around and in the nervous tissues. METHODS: This experimental study was performed on 18 rats. They underwent bilateral sciatic nerve dissection. Then, right and left damaged sciatic nerves were sutured. In left side, silicone gel was applied. Two months later, both sides were evaluated regarding to myelin fiber diameter (µm), total fascicular area (mm(2)), axon diameter (µm), myelin thickness (µm), G- ratio (axon diameter/myelin thickness), connective tissue area, ratio of connective tissue area/fascicular area, neuroma and foreign body formation in liver and lungs and spleen reaction. Results of right and left sides were compared. RESULTS: Silicone was significantly more effective in increasing myelin thickness in the side that silicone was applied) than the control side. It was not associated with inflammation, scar formation, granuloma, and neuroma formation. No foreign body reaction occurred in liver, spleen and lungs after silicone application; but axonal regeneration did not improve with after its use. CONCLUSION: According to our findings, it seems that silicone application in the cases with significant complications or in the cases that nerve graft is not possible would be an ideal option.
