RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Women play an essential role in maintaining the family's health, and family planning is part of women's and families' health. The couple's mutual understanding of family planning methods is essential in selecting contraception. Acceptance of and satisfaction with different contraception methods can impact sexual satisfaction. The present study aimed to compare the effect of the information-motivation-behavioral (IMB) model and psychoeducational counseling on sexual satisfaction and contraception methods of women referring to health centers in Kerman. METHODS: This trial was conducted on 81 women aged 18 to 45, in Kerman health centers, from 2021 to 2022. Participants were randomly divided into 3 groups of 27 people (control, psychoeducational counseling, and IMB method). Three online counseling sessions were held for the psychoeducational group, and four were held for the IMB group. The control group received routine care. The IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, version 22 (IBM Corp. Armonk, NY, USA) was used for data analysis using nonparametric Friedman and Kruskal-Wallis tests. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 32.59 ± 7.04, and the majority of them had university degrees and were homemakers. The mean sexual satisfaction score significantly increased immediately after the intervention and 1 month later in the 2 interventional groups (p < 0.0). Changes in contraception methods after intervention were significant in the psychoeducational group (p = 0.0) CONCLUSION: The results indicate the positive impact of psychological counseling on women's sexual satisfaction and contraception method. The IMB method also impacted men's sexual satisfaction but did not lead to any changes in the contraceptive method.

The current study was carried out systematically by conducting a review of the literature. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature to determine the effects of brace wearing on sagittal parameters in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). In this study, PubMed/MEDLINE (National Library of Medicine), Scopus, Ovid, CINAHL, PEDro, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane Library were accessed and searched using the patient, intervention, comparison, outcome, and study design model. We included studies that looked at the effects of brace treatment on sagittal spinopelvic parameters in AIS patients over the age of 18. The studies were chosen for their cross-sectional, retrospective, or prospective observational designs, and they were published in English. Review articles, case reports, case study designs, and conference abstracts were excluded from consideration. The methodological quality of the remaining articles was assessed using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale. A total of 12 studies were chosen, and 995 participants were evaluated, with 3 (25%) and 9 (75%) having high and moderate quality, respectively. The studies were classified based on the length of follow-up. Long-term, short-term, and immediate effects of brace wearing on sagittal spinopelvic parameters were reported in four, five, and three studies, respectively. The results of nine studies showed a significant decrease in Cobb angle after wearing the brace, which contradicted the findings of the other two. The cervical and sagittal pelvic parameters, thoracic kyphosis (TK), lumbar lordosis (LL), spinopelvic parameters, and sagittal balance were all evaluated in the intended studies, yielding varying results. According to the available literature, wearing a brace flattens the TK and LL. According to this systematic review, brace treatment may affect sagittal spinopelvic parameters in adolescents with AIS, particularly in TK and LL. The cervical and pelvic parameters yielded inconclusive results. This study backs up the idea that brace design and structure can influence sagittal parameter changes. The limitations of this study include different methods of parameter measurement, variations in the brace types and wear time, varying follow-up duration, and differences in participant characteristics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The scleral ring in birds consists of ossicles that are fixed as small plates by cartilage joints and have no articulation to other parts of the skeleton. OBJECTIVE: Due to inadequate examination of the scleral ring anatomy and its specific form in owls, this study aimed to investigate the exact structure of the scleral ring and some morphometric characteristics of the eyeball in a long-eared owl (Asio otus). METHODS: The eyes of 20 alive and 10 dead male and female owls were examined. In addition to common anatomical methods, computed tomography scans and radiographic and ultrasonographic imaging techniques were used in this study. RESULTS: The structure consisted of 15 ossicles. In the ventral part of the ring, these tubercles were observed in the scleral rings of all owls; in each ring, there were four bones with these tubercles. Additionally, there was no significant difference between the left and right eye parameters. Most ocular parameters in female owls were larger than those in males, but in the case of some parameters, such as optic nerve length and optic nerve sheath diameter, this difference was not observed. CONCLUSIONS: According to this study, the scleral ring in the Asio otus has anterior and posterior parts, and the lens is in the immediate vicinity of the anterior part. The right and left scleral rings and eyeballs are bilaterally symmetrical in terms of the shape, size, and number of ossicles that form the ring.

RESUMO

Background: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) are the most common spinal deformities in adolescents aged 10 to 16. During the past 50 years, brace treatment has been suggested as the most common nonsurgical treatment for AIS and SK. The brace efficacy strongly depends on wearing time. Also, previous studies indicated that patients with spinal deformities undergoing brace treatment experience deformity-related emotional distress. This study aimed to comprehend the experiences of braces-treated adolescents during school time using a qualitative approach. Methods: This descriptive qualitative research was used with an interpretative framework and enlisted the help of children with spinal deformities who have been prescribed "brace wearing." This study was conducted using semi-structured, face-to-face, in-depth interviews and phone conversations from September 2020 to May 2021. Additionally, content analysis was employed. Results: A total of 64 participants were interviewed, including 32 adolescents with spinal deformities under brace treatment and their parents (27 mothers, and 5 fathers). Three main categories-concerns, actual problems, received support-6 subcategories, and 278 codes were discovered following data analysis about participants' experiences. Conclusion: Special school-based programs are required for such tortious conditions. This qualitative study motivates a better understanding of these special children and their hidden problems and suggests developing a supportive protocol.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between a number of prevalent foot problems in older people and their history of falls and quality of life. To examine the relationship between timed up and go (TUG) test time and ankle muscles' strength. METHOD: In this cross-sectional observational study on a convenient sample of 350 people 65 years and older, direct logistic and hierarchical regressions were used to assess the relation of self-reported falls and quality of life with hallux valgus, oedema, sensory loss and callus. The correlation coefficients were calculated to measure the relationship between TUG test time and ankle muscle strength. RESULTS: Moderate negative correlations were measured between ankle muscles' strength and TUG time (rDorsiflexors  = -0.42 p = 0.000, rPlantar flexors  = -0.45 p = 0.000). The odds ratio extracted from logistic regression for foot pain was 3.05 (p = 0.000, 95% CI: 1.8-5.1). The results of the hierarchical regression showed that oedema had the highest contribution to depicting the quality of life (standardised B = -0.22, p = 0.001), followed by foot pain (beta = -0.178, p = 0.004) and plantar sensory loss (beta = -0.143, p = 0.019). CONCLUSION: The results of this study highlight the importance of foot problems in older people. Foot pain showed relationship with self-reported fall experience. Oedema and foot pain had negative impact on quality of life. Ankle muscles' strength may affect balance in older people. However, because of the small effects sizes and wide confidence intervals, the results should be interpreted cautiously.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the reliabilities of the cervical range-of-motion (CROM) device and a dual digital inclinometer (as accepted clinical tools) and iPhone or Android smartphone applications (clinometer and compass; as new technologies) in measuring cervical range of motion in patients with neck pain. METHODS: Twenty participants (13 women, 7 men; age 19-33 years) with neck pain persisting for at least 4 weeks were enrolled. Neck movements were measured in each participant using 4 noninvasive devices in random order. RESULTS: The CROM device showed excellent intra- and interrater reliabilities in assessing cervical range of motion except in right rotation for which it showed moderate intrarater reliability. The dual digital inclinometer demonstrated moderate to excellent intra- and interrater reliabilities. Cervical range of motion measurements using iPhone applications showed good to excellent intra- and interrater reliabilities, whereas Android applications had poor to excellent intra- and interrater reliabilities. Based on the validity results, all assessment tools differed from the CROM device depending on the direction of movement, although the iPhone applications showed fewer differences than the other 2 devices. CONCLUSION: Generally, the CROM device showed the highest reproducibility, and iPhone applications showed more acceptable intra- and interrater reliabilities than the digital inclinometer and Android applications. The clinometer application of smartphones could be reliable in measuring frontal and sagittal cervical range of motion in patients with neck pain and in a sitting position. However, the compass application of the iPhone showed acceptable results, whereas that of the Android device could not be recommended for clinical use.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sexual health is a state of physical, mental, and social well-being in relation to sexuality. Sexual assertiveness is a person's ability to meet sexual needs. Considering limited sexual information of women and the taboo nature of talking about sexual needs, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the sexual assertiveness training on sexual health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized clinical trial assignment parallel study with a control group was performed in September and October 2016 on 60 married women referred to Imam Reza Health Center in Mashhad. The sample size was estimated to be 30 subjects per group. Instruments included demographic characteristics, sexual assertiveness, and sexual health questionnaire. The pretest was completed in two groups at the beginning of the study and post-test was done for both groups 1 week after educating the experimental group. Descriptive statistic tests included Chi-square, t-test, and paired t-test, and one-way analysis of variance. A p value less than 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS: The two intervention and control groups showed no significant difference in terms of sexual health level before starting the study (t 58 = 0.854, p > 0.05). After the study, based on the independent t-test, the two groups showed significant differences (t 58 = -4.077, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Sexual assertiveness training can improve women's sexual health. Considering the lack of research in this area and due to the effect of mutual understanding of couples on emotional and sexual issues, further research is necessary for this field.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to compare the Philadelphia collar and an open-design cervical collar with regard to user satisfaction and cervical range of motion in asymptomatic adults. DESIGN: Seventy-two healthy subjects (36 women, 36 men) aged 18 to 29 yrs were recruited for this study. Neck movements, including active flexion, extension, right/left lateral flexion, and right/left axial rotation, were assessed in each subject under three conditions--without wearing a collar and while wearing two different cervical collars--using a dual digital inclinometer. Subject satisfaction was assessed using a five-item self-administered questionnaire. RESULTS: Both Philadelphia and open-design collars significantly reduced cervical motions (P < 0.05). Compared with the Philadelphia collar, the open-design collar more greatly reduced cervical motions in three planes and the differences were statistically significant except for limiting flexion. Satisfaction scores for Philadelphia and open-design collars were 15.89 (3.87) and 19.94 (3.11), respectively. CONCLUSION: Based on the data of the 72 subjects presented in this study, the open-design collar adequately immobilized the cervical spine as a semirigid collar and was considered cosmetically acceptable, at least for subjects aged younger than 30 yrs.

RESUMO

Diazinon, a commonly used organophosphorus pesticide, has been widely used throughout the world in agriculture and horticulture to control insects that feed on crops, ornamentals, lawns, fruits, vegetables and other food products. The toxicity of the DZN causes adverse effects on many organs. The purpose of this study was to examine the protective effect of vitamins A, E and C on liver enzymes alanine transaminase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) in rats exposed to diazinon. In this study, male wistar rats were randomly divided into 10 different groups. The groups were administered normal saline, soybean oil (as the solvent for diazinon and fat-soluble vitamins), diazinon, (30 mg kg(-1), vitamins E, C and A (100, 500 mg kg(-1) and 400 IU kg(-1), respectively) and a combination of diazinon with the same dose of each vitamin intraperitoneally i.p.daily for 14 days. Seven days after the final injection, the animals were anesthetized and blood samples were taken. The photometric method was used to measure the activity of the enzymes. The activities of ALT and AST in the diazinon group were significantly higher than that observed in the control group; however, the diazinon/vitamin E, A, C group displayed significant reduction in ALT and AST activities compared to the diazinon group. The lowest level of LDH enzyme activity was observed in the dazinon/vitamin C group and this was statistically lower than the diazinon group. The results of this study revealed that vitamin E, A and C have a potent protective effect against diazinon-induced hepatotoxicity in rats, which may be due to the scavenging of free radicals and increased antioxidant status.
