RESUMO

In this work we define a modified SEIR model that accounts for the spread of infection during the latent period, infections from asymptomatic or pauci-symptomatic infected individuals, potential loss of acquired immunity, people's increasing awareness of social distancing and the use of vaccination as well as non-pharmaceutical interventions like social confinement. We estimate model parameters in three different scenarios-in Italy, where there is a growing number of cases and re-emergence of the epidemic, in India, where there are significant number of cases post confinement period and in Victoria, Australia where a re-emergence has been controlled with severe social confinement program. Our result shows the benefit of long term confinement of 50% or above population and extensive testing. With respect to loss of acquired immunity, our model suggests higher impact for Italy. We also show that a reasonably effective vaccine with mass vaccination program are successful measures in significantly controlling the size of infected population. We show that for a country like India, a reduction in contact rate by 50% compared to a reduction of 10% reduces death from 0.0268 to 0.0141% of population. Similarly, for a country like Italy we show that reducing contact rate by half can reduce a potential peak infection of 15% population to less than 1.5% of population, and potential deaths from 0.48 to 0.04%. With respect to vaccination, we show that even a 75% efficient vaccine administered to 50% population can reduce the peak number of infected population by nearly 50% in Italy. Similarly, for India, a 0.056% of population would die without vaccination, while 93.75% efficient vaccine given to 30% population would bring this down to 0.036% of population, and 93.75% efficient vaccine given to 70% population would bring this down to 0.034%.

RESUMO

Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) (G3) dendrimer was modified into quaternary ammonium salts using tertiary amines with different chain lengths: dimethyldodecyl amine, dimethylhexyl amine, and dimethylbutyl amine using an efficient synthetic route. The antimicrobial activity of these dendrimer ammonium salts against Staphylococcus and E-coli bacteria was examined using the disc diffusion method. It was found that quaternary ammonium salt prepared with the dimethyldodecyl amine exhibits antimicrobial efficacy against Staphalococus and E.coli bacteria.

RESUMO

Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) intercalated nanocomposite films containing 1, 2, 5, and 10% organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) have been synthesized by the solvent casting approach. The thermal characteristics, isothermal cold crystallization kinetics, and structural changes of neat PLLA and its nanocomposites during annealing were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. DSC observation showed that melting temperature and final crystallinity were not affected significantly with OMMT loading. PLLA films with increasing OMMT content exhibited higher crystallization rates than neat PLLA during annealing and suggested that the silicate platelets act as a nucleation agent during annealing. The effect of OMMT content on the isothermal crystallization kinetics of PLLA was analyzed using the Avrami equation. An Avrami constant of 1-2 was observed, suggesting that crystallization proceeds through one-dimensional growth with heterogeneous nucleation. FTIR investigation showed a band at 922 cm(-1) at all T(a), and no band at 908 cm(-1) suggested that all samples form α crystal regardless of OMMT content or T(a).

RESUMO

The numbers of Pseudomonas sp. isolated were counted in samples collected from water, sludge and intestine of fishes raised in different wastewater ponds along an effluent gradient in a sewage treatment plant. Total fish yield in the last maturation pond increased by 73% over the yield in first maturation pond or facultative pond. The number of Pseudomonas sp. isolated from the intestine of the tilapia (Oreochromis mssambicus) raised in facultative pond, was more than three times the counts (7.22 x 10(8)/g) observed in the last maturation pond (2.025 x 10(8)/g). The effective lethal concentration of cadmium for Pseudomonas sp. isolated from the intestine of the tilapia was 0.6 mM and 0.08-0.09 mM when the fish was procured from facultative pond and last maturation pond, respectively. The Pseudomonas sp. isolated from the intestine of the tilapia did not have resistance to any of the ten antibiotics tested. However, the bacterium isolated from raw sewage, water and sediment of the anaerobic pond was resistant to seven out of ten antibiotics tested.
