RESUMO

In this work, we investigated the efficacy of three new biocides (77351, 73532, 73503--NALCO®) as specific antifouling products against adult organisms of the bivalve Brachidontes pharaonis (Fischer P., 1870), a Lessepsian species introduced in the Mediterranean Sea by sea transport (ballast water), and which has recently shown invasive behaviour in an industrial plant in Southern Italy (Sicily). These biocides were tested to verify their efficacy, as well as their environmental compatibility at discharge point, using the crustacean belonging to the genus Artemia (Leach, 1819) as model organism, according to Government Decree (D. Lgs) No. 152/06. Biocides were also tested using alternative crustaceans, Amphibalanus amphitrite (Darwin, 1854), and Tigriopus fulvus (Fischer, 1860), in order to check whether their introduction as model species in the national regulation could affect discharge limit concentrations (DLC) due to their different sensitivity, with likely economic and technical repercussions in the industrial water treatment sector.

Because cobalamin deficiency is routinely treated with parenteral cobalamin, we investigated the efficacy of oral therapy. We randomly assigned 38 newly diagnosed cobalamin deficient patients to receive cyanocobalamin as either 1 mg intramuscularly on days 1, 3, 7, 10, 14, 21, 30, 60, and 90 or 2 mg orally on a daily basis for 120 days. Therapeutic effectiveness was evaluated by measuring hematologic and neurologic improvement and changes in serum levels of cobalamin (normal, 200 to 900 pg/mL) methylmalonic acid (normal, 73 to 271 nmol/L), and homocysteine (normal, 5.1 to 13.9 micromol/L). Five patients were subsequently found to have folate deficiency, which left 18 evaluable patients in the oral group and 15 in the parenteral group. Correction of hematologic and neurologic abnormalities was prompt and indistinguishable between the 2 groups. The mean pretreatment values for serum cobalamin, methylmalonic acid, and homocysteine were, respectively, 93 pg/mL, 3,850 nmol/L, and 37. 2 micromol/L in the oral group and 95 pg/mL, 3,630 nmol/L, and 40.0 micromol/L in the parenteral therapy group. After 4 months of therapy, the respective mean values were 1,005 pg/mL, 169 nmol/L, and 10.6 micromol/L in the oral group and 325 pg/mL, 265 nmol/L, and 12.2 micromol/L in the parenteral group. The higher serum cobalamin and lower serum methylmalonic acid levels at 4 months posttreatment in the oral group versus the parenteral group were significant, with P < .0005 and P < .05, respectively. In cobalamin deficiency, 2 mg of cyanocobalamin administered orally on a daily basis was as effective as 1 mg administered intramuscularly on a monthly basis and may be superior.

While Epstein-Barr viral (EBV) DNA is nearly always detectable in African Burkitt's lymphoma (BL), the relatively low frequency of BL in EBV-positive African children and the infrequent finding of EBV in American BL suggest that other cofactors may contribute to the malignant transformation. Among these possible cofactors are type C oncornaviruses. To evaluate this possibility, we screened the cellular DNA from 16 lymphomas (2 African, 14 American) and the DNA from 20 lymphoma-derived cell lines (4 African, 16 American) with a radiolabeled viral DNA probe from EBV and two oncornaviral probes (murine amphotropic 1504A virus and simian sarcoma virus). The radiolabeled EBV DNA probe hybridized with 18 of 36 tumor or cell line DNA's. Only 2 of 11 American BL tumors contained detectable EBV sequences. However, the cell lines derived from three EBV-negative tumors converted in vitro to EBV positivity, suggesting that some of the tumor cells could be infected with EBV. In contrast, none of the tumors or the cell lines derived therefrom hybridized with either the 1504A or the simian sarcoma virus probes, decreasing the likelihood that type C viruses are cofactors with EBV.
