RESUMO

An important publication titled The State of Doctor of Nursing Practice Education in 2022 reports on a national study that examined the current state of DNP graduates both in practice and in academia. The key findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the 2022 report provide an updated snapshot of current DNP education and practice along with recommendations for curricula and utilization of DNP graduates. This article focuses on the DNP Project as an integral component of the DNP curriculum in developing clinical leaders and scholars to improve healthcare outcomes and significantly impact healthcare transformation. Many publications have addressed the significant variability of the DNP Project among programs. This AACN report further underscores variability among DNP Projects regarding purpose, focus, format, development, evaluation, dissemination, and contribution to practice. The purpose of this article is to provide a perspective for nurse leaders and faculty about selected key findings, conclusions, and recommendations from this 2022 report that relate to DNP Projects as a means to improve the value and rigor of DNP Projects and decrease the variability among DNP programs.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Standard operating procedures drive everyday practice within any organization, including those within a forensic setting. In the event of unusual circumstances, organizations must respond rapidly to address the impact on operations while ensuring that the quality and safety outcomes of routine services are not affected. This case study illustrates how standard operating procedures can be newly developed or modified, and rapidly deployed and quickly revised, to address unusual circumstances. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic is used as an example in this case report.

BACKGROUND: This thematic analysis study examined how post master's Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students described personal and professional growth in their views of self, healthcare, and clinical practice that evolved as a result of the curriculum and experiences in the DNP program. PURPOSE: The purpose of this thematic analysis was to describe and discuss perceptions of graduating post master's DNP students regarding personal and professional development that occurred during the DNP program to identify how DNP graduates saw themselves change and grow during the course of the DNP program. METHOD: A thematic analysis method was used to code, categorize, and summarize data from 42 reflection papers of post master's DNP students into a thematic framework based on the eight DNP Essentials which are the framework upon which DNP programs build their curriculum and design student experiences. The authors systematically analyzed the statements from each student paper and drew interpretation of the students' statements into themes that were congruent with the eight DNP Essentials and one stand-alone category. RESULTS: Data analysis yielded 15 themes that were aligned within eight categories of the DNP Essentials and one stand-alone category. CONCLUSIONS: The eight DNP Essentials provided a framework for the themes which reflected professional growth attributed to the journey through the DNP program. A ninth category entitled Personal Advancements described students' perceptions of their personal and professional development. These dimensions are proposed in the new DNP Essentials currently in development. Increasing understanding of the DNP students' journey serves to inform DNP curriculum development and program experiences, and informs faculty of the influence they have on molding students into a more robust professional role.

This study examined medicolegal death investigation records and autopsy reports of a medical examiner's office to identify the circumstances surrounding sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) and geospatial analyses to pinpoint areas of infant death concentration. Analysis of 732 records of SUID deaths occurring in a 10-year span resulted in the conclusion that environmental factors associated with the sudden death were to some extent modifiable. Co-sleeping (sharing a sleeping surface, or bed-sharing) on various surfaces (mattress, pallet, couch) occurred in 53.4% of the infant deaths. Geographic areas where the largest number of deaths occurred were characterized as areas of high poverty level. The inclusion of additional information at the time of investigation (eg, alcohol and tobacco use of co-sleepers, illness of others in household, exceptions to normal sleep routine of infant) may aid in identifying modifiable circumstances to reduce infant mortality attributable to sudden infant death.

OBJECTIVES: : The focus was to examine the educational structure and curricular planning involved in current pediatric emergency interhospital transport teams that use resident physicians as members of the team and to compare these current results with the findings from 2 previous, similar surveys complete during the past 2 decades. METHODS: : A 33-item questionnaire, assessing curricular components of the transport experience, was sent to a chief resident at all the officially listed nonmilitary pediatric residency program in contiguous United States. Comparisons were done for each similar item on all 3 questionnaires. RESULTS: : After 3 rounds of mailing and telephone follow-up to nonresponders, the overall response rates for the 2006 and 1998 surveys were 81% (n = 156) and 89% (n = 173), respectively. A similar survey on a smaller sample, published in 1990, used for comparison, had a response rate of 99% (n = 75). When asked about training provided to residents before going on transport, respondents varied in the specific experiences and skills required of the residents. In addition, programs reported variation in team backup during the pediatric emergency transport. The most common method of evaluation for the resident on completion of the transport was "no specific method" as reported by 62% of respondents in 2006 compared with 50% in 1998 and 55% in 1990 (P = not significant). The percentage of programs providing informal verbal feedback was reduced significantly in 2006 as compared with that in 1998 (P = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: : The educational structure for residents serving in pediatric emergency interhospital transport teams remains variable, and the full educational value of pediatric transports continues to be somewhat unrealized particularly in the area of posttransport performance feedback and evaluation. Having medical command available has consistently been a strong point of the residents' experience on the transport team.
