Purpose: To compare joint work in the lower limb joints during different sub-phases of the gait cycle between Cerebral Palsy (CP) and healthy children. Methods: Eighteen CP and 20 healthy children's gait data were collected. The CP group included orthoses, intra-muscular injection of botulinum toxin and surgery groups. A motion capture system was used to collect gait data. Joint work was calculated as positive and negative components in six subphases during gait and normalised by speed when comparing the groups. Results: The CP group had a slower walking speed, smaller stride length and longer stance phase than the healthy group. Hip max positive work was 0.12 ± 0.02 Jkg-1/ms-1 for the CP group in pre-mid-stance but 0.07 ± 0.01 Jkg-1/ms-1 for the healthy group during the terminal phase. In terminal stance, ankle positive work was significantly lower in the CP group (0.12 ± 0.01) than in the healthy group (0.18 ± 0.01). The knee showed a similar distribution of positive work in the stance phase for the two groups. In the ankle and hip, the CP group had energy generation mainly in midstance while the healthy group was mainly in terminal stance. In the ankle, the CP group had larger energy absorption in mid-stance than the healthy children group, while the CP group showed lower energy generation in the terminal stance phase than seen in the healthy group. Conclusion: The qualitative and quantitative analysis of joint work provides useful information for clinicians in the treatment and rehabilitation of CP patients.

Deposition of reactive nitrogen (N) is a major threat to terrestrial ecosystems associated with impacts on ecosystem properties and functions including carbon (C) and nutrient stocks, soil water quality and nutrient retention. In the oceanic-alpine Racomitrium heath habitat, N deposition is associated with moss mat degradation and a shift from bryophyte to graminoid dominance. To investigate the effects of moss mat decline on C and N stocks and fluxes, we collected Racomitrium heath vegetation/soil cores from sites along a gradient of N deposition in the UK. Cores were maintained under controlled conditions and exposed to scenarios of current (8-40 kg N ha-1 y-1), reduced (8 kg N ha-1 y-1) and elevated (50 kg N ha-1 y-1) N deposition. Cores from high N deposition sites had smaller aboveground C and N stocks and, under current conditions, leached large amounts of inorganic N and had low soil water pH compared with low N deposition sites. With reduced N deposition there was evidence for rapid recovery of soil water quality in terms of reduced N leaching and small increases in pH. Under high N deposition, cores from low N deposition sites retained much of the applied N while those with a history of high N deposition leached large amounts of inorganic N. Carbon fluxes in soil water and net CO2 fluxes varied according to core source site but were not affected by the N deposition scenarios. We conclude that C and N stocks and cycling in Racomitrium heath are strongly affected by long-term exposure to N deposition but that soil water quality may improve rapidly, if N deposition rates are reduced. The legacy of N deposition impacts on moss mat cover and vegetation composition however, mean that the ecosystem remains sensitive to future pulses in N input.

Salmonid species are highly sensitive to river water temperature. Although long-term river temperature monitoring is essential for assessing drivers of change in ecological systems, these data are rarely available from statutory monitoring. We utilized a 105-year citizen science data set of river water temperature from the River Spey, North-East Scotland, gathered during the fishing season (April-October) between 1912 and 2016. As there were gaps in the records we applied generalised additive models to reconstruct long-term daily river temperature in the fishing season from air temperature, cumulative air temperature, day length and runoff. For that, continuous hydrometeorological data have been obtained from statutory monitoring and process-based models. Long-term warming trends of river temperature, namely an increase of 0.2 K per decade after 1961, have been mostly related to increasing air temperature of the same magnitude. Indirect impacts of rising air temperatures include less snow accumulation and snow melt as well as earlier snow melt. The snow free period starts around 2 days earlier per decade throughout the study period and 7 days earlier per decade after 1965. Consequently, the contribution of snow melt and its cooling properties to river temperature in spring are declining. Citizen science delivered a data set that filled a vital knowledge gap in the long-term historical assessment of river temperatures. Such information provides a robust basis for future assessments of global change and can help inform decision-makers about the potential importance of enhancing the resilience of rivers and aquatic ecology to climate change.

BACKGROUND: Interpretation of gait data obtained from modern 3D gait analysis is a challenging and time consuming task. The aim of this study was to create neural network models which can recognise the gait patterns from pre- and post-treatment and the normal ones. Neural network is a method which works on the principle of learning from experience and then uses the obtained knowledge to predict the unknowns. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with cerebral palsy were recruited as subjects whose gait was analysed in pre and post-treatment. A group of twenty-six normal subjects also participated in this study as control group. All subjects' gait was analysed using Vicon Nexus to obtain the gait parameters and kinetic and kinematic parameters of hip, knee and ankle joints in three planes of both limbs. The gait data was used as input to create neural network models. A total of approximately 300 trials were split into 70% and 30% to train and test the models, respectively. Different models were built using different parameters. The gait modes were categorised as three patterns, i.e., normal, pre- and post-treatments. RESULTS: The results showed that the models using all parameters or using the joint angles and moments could predict the gait patterns with approximately 95% accuracy. Some of the models e.g., the models using joint power and moments, had lower rate in recognition of gait patterns with approximately 70-90% successful ratio. CONCLUSION: Neural network models can be used in clinical practice to recognise the gait pattern for cerebral palsy patients.

BACKGROUND: In gait analysis, calculation of the ankle joint centre is a difficult task. The conventional way to calculate the ankle joint centre is using the Vicon Plug-in-Gait model. The present study proposes a new model, which calculates the joint centre from two markers positioned over the medial and lateral malleoli (i.e. Two-marker-model). METHODS: In order to compare the proposed model with Plug-in-Gait model, gait data from healthy and patient subjects were captured using a motion capture system. The ankle joint centres were calculated by the two models. A test-retest experiment was carried out to check reliability and repeatability for Two-marker-model. FINDINGS: Two ankle joint centres produced by two models were significantly different. The distances between two ankle joint centres were approximately 16.8 (mm), and the differences in the posterior-anterior, medial-lateral and inferior-superior directions were approximately 6.3, 7.7 and 8.2 (mm). Further error analysis highlighted that the probability of producing errors in Two-marker-model is lower than that in Plug-in-Gait model due to the Two-marker-model's simple and reliable marker positioning. The reliability and repeatability coefficients for the new model were greater than 0.9. INTERPRETATION: In principle, the Plug-in-Gait model is more likely to produce errors than the Two-marker-model, because the former employs multiple markers from the pelvis to calf to define the ankle joint centre with marker positions being very user-dependent. The results suggest that the Two-marker-model can be considered an alternative to Plug-in-Gait model for calculating ankle joint centre.
