RESUMO
This work analysed the expression of prostate polysaccharides in rats with age-related benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) for a better understanding of the possible relationship between prostate polysaccharides secretion and BPH onset. For this, prostatic glands from 1 month-old, 3 months-old, 6 months-old and 12 months-old Sprague-Dawley rats were processed in order to identify their overall polysaccharide content. Additionally, serum testosterone was also determined. One-month old rats showed significantly (P < 0.05) lower testosterone levels (0.77 ng/mL±0.12 ng/mL) compared with the other groups, which showed no significant difference among them. PAS staining showed positive polysaccharides markings in both the prostatic lumen and inside of luminal prostatic cells in all groups. Semiquantitative analysis of intraluminal PAS showed that one month-old rats had significantly (P < 0.005) lower PAS intensity when compared with all other groups (100.0 ± 0.5, arbitrary units vs. 107.3 ± 0.6, arbitrary units in 3 months-old ones), whereas 12 months-old ones showed significantly (P < 0.005) higher values when compared with all other groups (133.6 ± 3.5, arbitrary units in 12 months-old rats vs. 108.6 ± 1.4, arbitrary units in 6 months-old ones). The PAS + content practically disappeared when tissues were pre-incubated with either α-amylase or amyloglucosidase, regardless of a previous incubation with proteinase K. Incubation of prostate extracts from 12 months-old rats for 2 h with α-amylase yielded a significantly higher amount of free glucose (1.47 nmol/mg protein±0.23 nmol/mg protein vs. 0.32 nmol/mg protein±0.01 nmol/mg protein in untreated extracts). Similar results were obtained when extracts were pre-incubated with amyloglucosidase. Contrarily, pre-incubation with N-glycosidase induced a significantly (P < 0.05), much lower increase of free glucose. Pre-treatment with proteinase K did not significantly modify these results, which indicate that BPH is related to an increase in the secretion of low ramified ductal α-glycosydic polysaccharides that were not protected against lysis by any type of protein protective core. These changes seem to not be related with concomitant variations in serum testosterone levels.

The onset of age-related benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) is linked with changes in the expression of specific prostatic chemokines. The aim of this work was to characterize those most relevant changes through the simultaneous analysis of 34 chemokines in both prostatic tissue and serum in rats at different ages with the aim to identify clinically workable parameters for the detection of early prostatic alterations. The study included 28 healthy Sprague-Dawley male rats that were distributed in four groups, 1 month-old (prepuberal; n = 7), 3 months-old (young; n = 7), 6 months-old (mature; n = 7) and 12 months-old (elder; n = 7). Chemokines were analyzed through a commercial mini-array system specially designed for rat tissues. Serum testosterone levels and prostatic histological status were also evaluated. Histological lesions indicative of BPH were detected in three mature rats and in all elder ones. Mini-arrays from prostatic tissue showed that young animals had an overall decreased expression of most of the analyzed chemokines when compared with prepuberal rats, with the exception of agrin, which showed a significant (P < 0.05) increase (100.0 ± 1.3, arbitrary units in prepuberal rats vs.148.2 ± 4.1, arbitrary units in young ones). Older animals showed further specific changes in 4 out 34 analyzed chemokines, namely agrin, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Additionally, elder rats showed the lowest intensity levels of agrin combined with the highest ones for PDGF, TIMP1 and VEGF when compared with all other groups. Finally, a significant increase of serum VEGF was detected in elder, BPH-affected rats when compared with young ones. Results indicated that the onset of both rat puberty and BPH would be related with specific changes in the prostatic expression of chemokines such as VEGF. Otherwise, the observed changes in serum VEGF levels could suggest the future possible utilization of serum VEGF levels to detect early pathological prostatic processes.

Nitrogen-doping of cadmium sulfide nanostructured compounds was carried out under a nitrogen plasma source to produce CdS-N compounds. Once prepared, it was supported on graphene oxide sheets for producing CdS-N/GO photocatalysts, which were tested in the degradation of lignin and methylene blue (MB) molecules. Photocatalytic reactions were carried out under UV and visible (vis) energy irradiation. To provide insight on the catalytic behavior the CdS, CdS-N, GO, and CdS-N/GO compounds were characterized using different techniques including x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Raman, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy allowed determining the chemical composition in samples. It was observed an outstanding performance in photocatalytic activity tests, attributed to the extended response towards the visible light regime, and the synergistic effect between CdS-N and GO particles. The catalytic activity tests, reveal that the CdS-N/GO compound achieved over 90% lignin degradation and 100% of MB degradation. In addition, a remarkable performance is observed in the CdS-N/GO compound which exhibited stability after performing several reaction cycles.
RESUMO
The present study was aimed to develop nitrogen-doped nanostructured ZnO thin films. These films were produced in a sequential procedure involving the atomic layer deposition technique, and a hydrothermal process supported by microwave heating. Employing the atomic layer deposition technique, through self-limited reactions of diethylzinc (DEZn) and H2O, carried out at 3.29 × 10-4atm and 190 °C, a high-quality ZnO seed was grown on a Si (100) substrate, producing a textured film. In a second stage, columnar ZnO nanostructures were grown perpendicularly oriented to the silicon substrate on those films, using a solvothermal process in a microwave heating facility, employing Zn(NO3)2as zinc precursor, while hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) was used to produce the bridging of Zn2+ions. The consequence of N-doping concentration on the physicochemical properties of ZnO thin films was studied. The manufactured films were structurally analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Also, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman, and UV-vis spectroscopies were used to provide further insight on the effect of nitrogen doping. The N-doped films displayed textured wurtzite-like structures that changes their preferential growth from the (002) to the (100) crystallographic plane, apparently promoted by the increase of nitrogen precursor. It is also shown that nitrogen-doped films undergo a reduction in their bandgap, compared to ZnO. The methodology presented here provides a viable way to perform high-quality N-ZnO nanostructured thin films.
RESUMO
Nanostructured ZnO nanoarrays deposited on silicon oriented substrates is a very promising area in the study of the control of physicochemical properties, in which photoluminescence plays a crucial role. This optical property inherent to ZnO, can be favorably modified through the inclusion of doping elements, with the purpose of appropriately modifying their optical absorption and luminescence. Following this objective, in the present work we present the development of Zn(1-x-y)Ce(x)Eu(y)O nanostructured thin films. The samples were produced in two steps process by atomic layer deposition technique followed by a solvothermal synthesis. The purpose of Cerium and Europium incorporation into the ZnO compound is to enhance the photoluminescence in ZnO thin films. In a first stage textured thin films were obtained from diethylzinc at a temperature of 190 °C and a pressure of 3.29 × 10-4 atm, on silicon substrates (111). Subsequently, the perpendicular growth of nanostructures was induced under a solvothermal process, where Zn(NO3)2 was used as Zn precursor and hexamethylene-tetramine operating as a dual-ligand to promote the linking of Zn2+ ions. The growth of cerium-europium ZnO nanostructures was promoted with Ce(C2H3O2)3·H2O and Eu(NO3)3·5H2O. The obtained Zn(1-x-y)Ce(x)Eu(y)O nanostructured thin films, were examined through SEM-microscopy, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and photoluminescence studies. The attained results show that it is feasible to produce Ce-Eu-doped ZnO nanostructures with tailored photoluminescence and crystal size. Interestingly the Ce-Eu doping induces a strong shift in comparison to the typical UV emission of ZnO; an effect that can be related with the increase of lattice defects in ZnO.
RESUMO
Nanocrystalline titania (TiO2) is one of the most investigated crystalline nanostructured systems in the field of materials science. The technological applications of this material are related to its optoelectronic and photocatalytic properties, which in turn are strongly dependent on the crystal phase (i.e., anatase, brookite, and rutile), particle size, and surface structure. However, systematic comparative studies of all its crystal phases are scarce in literature due to difficulties in providing a controlled synthesis, which is primarily important in obtaining the brookite phase. In this report, the synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles in the anatase, brookite, and rutile structures was explored, using amorphous TiO2 as a common precursor under microwave-assisted hydrothermal conditions. The influence of parameters such as temperature, acidity, and precursor concentration on phase crystallization were investigated. The TiO2 materials (amorphous and crystalline phases as well as commercial Degussa P25) were systematically characterized using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV-visible reflectance spectroscopy, and dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering. The bactericidal activity and photocatalytic antibacterial effectiveness of each material were evaluated through the determination of the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations, and via the mortality kinetic method under ultraviolet (UV) illumination under similar conditions with two bacterial groups of unique cellular structures: Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The results are discussed with particular emphasis on the relationship between the synthesis parameters (acidity, precursor concentration, temperature and reaction time) and the bactericidal properties.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), the incidence of respiratory complications following cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is not well established. We aimed to describe the center-specific incidence and patient characteristics associated with respiratory complications following CRS and HIPEC in patients receiving treatment for PC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the University Hospital of Arrixaca study database to identify patients who underwent CRS and HIPEC for PC. Patients who experienced a post-operative respiratory complication were categorized according to the National Cancer Institute-Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events. Multivariable regression methods were used to identify independent risk factors for developing a respiratory complication following CRS and HIPEC. RESULTS: Between 2008 and 2017, we identified 247 patients who underwent CRS and HIPEC for PC. A total of eight patients (3.2%) were categorized as having a post-operative respiratory complication. A diaphragmatic peritonectomy and a PC index of > 14 were identified as independent risk factors for developing a respiratory complication. Radiographic evidence of a pleural effusion was identified in 72 patients who had CRS of the diaphragmatic peritoneum; however, only 6 (8.3%) of these patients required pleural drainage. CONCLUSIONS: Only 3.2% of patients developed a symptomatic respiratory complication following CRS and HIPEC. A pleural effusion was identified in almost all patients requiring a diaphragmatic peritonectomy as part of their CRS; however, less than one in ten of these patients required pleural drainage. Prophylactic insertion of a pleural drainage tube is, therefore, not indicated following CRS and HIPEC.

BACKGROUND: The attitude toward cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC in peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal cancer is unclear. The aim of this study is to report the perioperative outcomes after cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC in patients ≥ 75 years. METHODS: This retrospective multicenter study collected the data the Spanish Group of Peritoneal Cancer Surgery. Thirty-six patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal cancer met the selection criteria for the study. Morbidity, mortality, disease-free and overall survival were analyzed. RESULTS: Morbidity (grade III-IV) was 17% and 2 patients died of complications related to the procedure (5.4%). Median disease-free survival (DFS) was 16 months. DFS at 1 and 3 years was 81% and 42%, respectively. Overall survival at 1 and 3 years was 96% and 75%. In the univariate analysis, preoperative comorbidities (p = 0.01), liver metastases (p = 0.02), blood transfusion (p = 0.001) and postoperative complications (p = 0.001); and in the multivariate analysis, perioperative blood transfusion (OR 2.56, 95% CI 1.95-6.24, p = 0.03) and postoperative complications (OR 3.25, 95% CI 2.35-7.56, p = 0.02) were associated with a lower overall survival. CONCLUSIONS: Age is not an absolute contraindication to perform cytoreduction surgery with HIPEC in highly selected elderly patients with colorectal peritoneal carcinomatosis.

Hysteresis loops exhibited by the thermal properties of undoped and 0.8 at.% W-doped nanocrystalline powders of VO2 synthesized by means of the solution combustion method and compacted in pellets, are experimentally measured by photothermal radiometry. It is shown that: (i) the W doping reduces both the hysteresis loops of VO2 and its transition temperature up to 15 °C. (ii) The thermal diffusivity decreases (increases) until (after) the metallic domains become dominant in the VO2 insulating matrix, such that its variation across the metal-insulation transition is enhanced by 23.5% with W-0.8 at.% doping. By contrast, thermal conductivity (thermal effusivity) increases up to 45% (40%) as the metallic phase emerges in the VO2 structure due to the insulator-to-metal transition, and it enhances up to 11% (25%) in the insulator state when the local rutile phase is induced by the tungsten doping. (iii) The characteristic peak of the VO2 specific heat capacity is observed in both heating and cooling processes, such that the phase transition of the 0.8 at.% W-doped sample requires about 24% less thermal energy than the undoped one. (iv) The impact of the W doping on the four above-mentioned thermal properties of VO2 mainly shows up in its insulator phase, as a result of the distortion of the local lattice induced by the electrons of tungsten. W doping at 0.8 at.% thus enhances the VO2 capability to transport heat but diminishes its thermal switching efficiency.
RESUMO
In the present work, the photocatalytic efficiency of a novel system based on ZnO doped with nitrogen (ZT) and supported on graphene oxide (GO) is investigated. ZnO synthesis and their N doping were carried out in a microwave reactor using thiourea as nitrogen source, while the GO was prepared through a variation of the Hummers' method. Structural, morphological and photochemical characterization of the developed material was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The compounds were used to photodegrade the methylene blue molecule, which confirms the efficiency of nitrogen doped supported system compared to pristine ZnO. The degradation percentage of MB under UV energy using nitrogen-doped ZnO/GO, in a time of 35â¯min, reached 98% degradation; while using visible light 93% of degradation was reached.

Beetle insect species classified within the Melolonthidae complex (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) are a serious pest in several crops around the world including avocado (Persea americana Mill). The present work focused on determining the spatial behavior of the Melolonthidae complex of beetles and determined the economic impact in avocado crops in Antioquia, Colombia, South America. Beetle presence and damage produced in both foliage and fruits were quantified during 3 years for each avocado tree tested in two planted lots located in different places. The indexes of Cambardella, Morisita, and economic losses were calculated with data obtained. Our results strongly suggest that beetles present an isotropic movement in the lots with the damage beginning by the borders. Once insects enter the lots, they move in any direction inside the crop area with weak or moderate spatial dependence and low or null aggregation. Strong preference for fruits rather than foliage was observed. Economic analysis indicates that damage in fruit skin causes major losses. From observed results, it is proposed that integrated pest control should be directed mainly to fruits from the very early stages of growth and development and traps should be localized strategically and following the spatial and temporal distribution of insects for both prevention and control.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of chlorogenic acid (ChA) added pre-cooling and its combination with caffeine added during warming on cooled-stored boar semen parameters. Ten ejaculates were diluted in commercial extender with or without 4.5mg/ml ChA and stored at 15°C. After 0, 24 and 72 hours of storage, aliquots of these doses were taken and incubated at 37°C in the presence or absence of 8.0mM caffeine. Semen quality was evaluated after 10 and 120 minutes of incubation. The ChA increased (P <0.01) the sperm motility, viability, acrosomal integrity and the percentage of spermatozoa with high mitochondrial activity (PMHA), however, decreased (P <0.01) the malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration. Caffeine increased (P<0.05) the sperm motility, viability, PMHA and the MDA concentration and reduced (P <0.05) the acrosome integrity. When associated (ChA+caffeine), there was an increase (P <0.05) in sperm motility and viability, PMHA and acrosome integrity. The addition of ChA to the dilution medium improves the quality of the swine inseminating doses. The addition of caffeine during re-warming is only recommended when the semen is stored for prolonged periods (72h), and the inseminating dose should be used immediately after its addition.(AU)

BACKGROUND: Paclitaxel has been used frequently for Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) for ovarian carcinomatosis. Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC are associated with high rates of morbidity being anastomotic dehiscence one of the most frequent. The objective of this study is to quantify the effect of Paclitaxel-based HIPEC on colonic anastomosis in an experimental rat model. METHODS: After left colon resection and anastomosis, animals were randomized into four groups: Controls (C); Hyperthermia (H); Normothermic Intraperitoneal Paclitaxel (CP) and Paclitaxel-based HIPEC (HP). On postoperative day four, animals' peritoneal cavities were examined macroscopically, colon anastomosis burst pressures measured and specimens analyzed histologically. RESULTS: Thirty-nine animals were randomized and 36 were included in the analysis. H group presented the highest burst pressure 105.11 ± 22.9 mmHg, which was 27% higher than C (77.89 ± 27.6 mmHg). On the other hand, HP presented the lowest burst pressure 64 ± 26 mmHg, 16% lower than C group and 39% lower than H, being this latter difference statistically significant (p = 0.004). There were no significant differences regarding weight loss, adhesion scores, perianastomotic abscesses and histological findings (inflammation, fibroblasts, neoangiogenesis, and collagen among groups). CONCLUSION: Strength of colonic anastomosis was improved by isolated hyperthermia and negatively affected by Paclitaxel-based HIPEC.

We present a case of an 80-year-old male diagnosed with primary testicular leiomyosarcoma due to the detection of hepatic profile analytical alterations and hepatosplenic space-occupying lesions in abdominal ultrasound. Puncture of hepatic lesion was performed first and radical orchiectomy later, revealing histological concordance, compatible with intratesticular leiomyosarcoma. We present the case due to the uncommon of this type of tumors, especially in stage III and its peculiar diagnosis, secondary of hepatic alteration, both analytic and ultrasound.

The aim of this work was to determine the relationship of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the disulphide bonds established between sperm proteins with the achievement of capacitation in boar spermatozoa. With this purpose, spermatozoa were incubated in a specifically designed in vitro capacitation medium (CM) in the presence or absence of reduced glutathione (GSH). Incubation of boar spermatozoa in CM for 4 h significantly (p < 0.05) increased free cysteine residues, which is a marker of disrupted disulphide bonds, and also intracellular ROS levels. The addition of GSH to the medium prevented most capacitation-like changes in sperm motility, membrane lipid disorder, mitochondrial membrane potential, intracellular calcium levels and localization of tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins (pTyr), but not in tyrosine phosphorylation of P32. These effects were accompanied by the inhibition of the ability of sperm cells to trigger the acrosome exocytosis in response to progesterone. When GSH was added together with progesterone after 4 h of incubation, acrosome exocytosis was not altered, but the subsequent decrease in intracellular calcium observed in controls cells was inhibited. Furthermore, co-incubation of oocytes with spermatozoa previously incubated in CM in the presence of GSH for 4 h significantly (p < 0.05) increased the number of spermatozoa attached to the oocyte surface but decreased normal fertilization rates. Our results suggest that boar sperm capacitation is related to an increase in disrupted disulphide bonds and intracellular ROS levels and that both events are related to the regulation of hyperactivated motility, intracellular calcium dynamics, sperm binding ability to the oocyte and achievement of proper nuclear decondensation upon oocyte penetration.

Hysteresis loops in the emissivity of VO2 thin films grown on sapphire and silicon substrates by a pulsed laser deposition process are experimentally measured through the thermal-wave resonant cavity technique. Remarkable variations of about 43% are observed in the emissivity of both VO2 films, within their insulator-to-metal and metal-to-insulator transitions. It is shown that: i) The principal hysteresis width (maximum slope) in the VO2 emissivity of the VO2 + silicon sample is around 3 times higher (lower) than the corresponding one of the VO2 + sapphire sample. VO2 synthesized on silicon thus exhibits a wider principal hysteresis loop with slower MIT than VO2 on sapphire, as a result of the significant differences on the VO2 film microstructures induced by the silicon or sapphire substrates. ii) The hysteresis width along with the rate of change of the VO2 emissivity in a VO2 + substrate sample can be tuned with its secondary hysteresis loop. iii) VO2 samples can be used to build a radiative thermal diode able to operate with a rectification factor as high as 87%, when the temperature difference of its two terminals is around 17 °C. This record-breaking rectification constitutes the highest one reported in literature, for a relatively small temperature change of diode terminals.
RESUMO
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chlorogenic acid (ChA) in boar semen stored at 15°C. Twelve ejaculates were processed into insemination doses at different concentrations of ChA (0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.0 and 6.0 mg/ml) or vitamin E (200 µl/ml) as positive control. Semen was analysed after 0, 24 and 72 hr of storage. ChA improved (p < .05) sperm motility, acrosome integrity and mitochondrial activity in all periods of storage. Furthermore, after 24 hr of storage, ChA above 1.5 mg/ml supported the sperm viability until 120 min after reheating (p < .05). Both ChA and vitamin E were similarly efficient in increasing the antioxidant capacity of semen, reducing the malondialdehyde levels before and after 72 hr of storage (p < .05). However, with 72 hr of storage, ChA at 3.0 mg/ml improved the mitochondrial activity over vitamin E (p < .05). In conclusion, results suggest that the concentration of 3.2 mg/ml of ChA is the best for semen stored for up to 24 hr. However, for semen stored for a longer period, 6.0 mg/ml or more should be used.

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for pseudomyxoma peritonei and appendix tumours are widespread in the world. It is unclear what should be the attitude in elderly patients. METHODS: This retrospective multicenter study collected the database from ten Spanish centers from Spanish Group of Peritoneal Cancer Surgery. The study period was between November 2002 and March 2014. Seventeen patients with age greater than or equal to 75 years with peritoneal carcinomatosis from pseudomyxoma peritonei and appendix tumours met the selection criteria for the study. Outcomes in terms of morbidity and mortality such as disease-free and overall survival were analyzed. RESULTS: Median PCI was 16 (range 6-39). Ten postoperative adverse events were detected in nine patients (44.4%). 28% were grade I-II and 17% were grade III-IV. Disease-free survival at 1 and 3 years was 67 and 44%, respectively. Overall survival at 1 and 3 years was 100 and 88%, respectively. Only cytoreduction was related to worst disease free survival after univariate (p = 0.007) and multivariate (OR 11.639, 95% CI 1.24-109.74, p = 0.03) analyses. Cytoreduction was related to the worst overall survival after univariate analysis (p = 0.046). CONCLUSION: Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC for pseudomyxoma peritonei and appendix tumours in elderly patients it is a procedure with feasible postoperative morbi-mortality and survival outcomes.
