During mixed dentition, the 1st permanent molar is the most susceptible to caries, triggering a repetitive restorative cycle and loss. This study aimed to evaluate determinants of therapeutic extraction of severely damaged 1st permanent molars in mixed dentition before the eruption of the second permanent molar with favorable spontaneous closure of the residual space. The methodology involved a scoping review on PubMed using a specific search strategy. Ten articles were included addressing factors such as the ideal chronological age, stage of development of the second premolar and permanent molar, presence of the third molar, residual spontaneous closure, prognosis, and need for orthodontic treatment. In conclusion, therapeutic extraction of the 1st molar before the eruption of the second molar is associated with favorable spontaneous closure of the residual space. Greater success is evident with the presence of the third molar, the second molar in stage E, and the second premolar in stage F (Demirjian).

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The CCR5/CCL5 axis is essential for interactions between malignant cells and microenvironment components, promoting tumor progression in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). This study aims to evaluate the association of CCL5 and CCR5 with the behavior of oral cancer and assess the therapeutic potential of a CCR5 antagonist. METHODS: A retrospective study to analyze CCR5 and CCL5 expression on paraffin-embedded tissues was performed. In cell lines, rhCCL5 was added to induce CCR5-related pathways, and Maraviroc and shRNA against CCR5 were used to neutralize the receptor. Finally, an in vivo murine orthotopic xenograft model of tongue cancer was used to evaluate Maraviroc as an oncologic therapy. After 15 days, the mice were killed, and the primary tumors and cervical lymph nodes were analyzed. RESULTS: The expression of CCR5 was associated with clinical stage and metastasis, and CCL5 was related to overall survival. Adding rhCCL5 induced cell proliferation, while shRNA and Maraviroc reduced it in a dose-dependent manner. Maraviroc treatment also increased apoptosis and modified cytoskeletal organization. In vivo, Maraviroc reduced neck metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: The effects of CCR5 antagonists in OSCC have been poorly studied, and this study reports in vitro and in vivo evidence for the effects of Maraviroc in OSCC. Our results suggest that the CCR5/CCL5 axis plays a role in oral cancer behavior, and that its inhibition is a promising new therapy alternative.

ABSTRACT Virtual microscopy (VM) is being widely implemented in education and could lead to the replacement of light microscopy (LM). Objective: To provide a review of the literature based on the questions: What is the perception of academics and students? and What is the performance of students? regarding the teaching of histology and/or histopathology with VM in dentistry. Material and methods: The following databases were consulted: Pubmed, Scielo, Science Direct and Scopus, and 10 articles were selected. Results: All the studies that evaluated perception and academic performance obtained results in favor of VM. Conclusions: VM has a promising future, but more studies with similar methodologies and that consider the perception of academics are required.

SUMMARY The nutritional status (NS) of a child is important since there are essential nutrients needed for the development of craniofacial structures that, when low, compromise the body. One way to monitor and prevent the effects of malnutrition is with the age-appropriate anthropometric assessment (height-for-age) and BMI-for-age. Objective: Determine the association between delayed eruption (DE) of permanent teeth and NS in children aged 6 to 12 years from the districts of Canchaque and San Miguel de El Faique at the months of June and July 2018. Material and methods: 354 children aged 6 to 12 years old from the districts of Canchaque and San Miguel de El Faique are examined and the sociodemographic variables, NS and DE are recorded. Prevalences are analyzed and assessed for associations. Variables are reported in frequency tables and associated NS with DE through contingency tables and calculating their OR And RP. Results: The prevalence of individuals with at least a deficient anthropometric valuation (VAM) is 43%, and DE is = 26%. When assessing relationships, a statistically significant association (O.R.= 2.42 IC = 1.49-3.91) (RP=1.90 p<0.001) between the VAM-height-for-age and DE is described. Conclusions: The prevalence of DE cases was higher than in other studies. There is an association between the NS of the individuals and DE with a positive statistical correlation between them, especially a VAM height-for-age and DE.
