RESUMO

Epidermal growth factor enhances proliferation and differentiation of cells during growth, maturation, and tissue healing. The objectives were to localize the epidermal growth factor in paradental cells and to determine the effect of orthodontic treatment on its concentrations in periodontal ligament fibroblasts, alveolar bone surface lining cells, and epithelial rests of Malassez. Sixty male cats, 1 year old, were divided into 2 groups: active and sham, and further divided into 10 time groups. In the active group, 1 maxillary canine was retracted by 80 g force; in the sham group, the animals received an inactive appliance. Sagittal sections of each half maxilla were stained for epidermal growth factor; staining intensity was measured microphotometrically in 10 periodontal ligament fibroblasts, alveolar bone surface lining cells, and epithelial rests of Malassez cells in sites of periodontal ligament tension and compression, and in corresponding sites near control and sham canines. The overall mean staining intensity of the cells of the active group animals was 30.47%, whereas that of the sham group was 21.78% (P <.0001). In all 3 types, cells near the actively treated canines stained significantly darker (P <.0001) than cells near the sham or control canines, particularly between 12 hours and 7 days. These results demonstrate that orthodontic forces increase epidermal growth factor concentrations in paradental cells, suggesting that epidermal growth factor participates in the tissue remodeling that facilitates tooth movement.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of chemotherapy on oral and dental structures and craniofacial growth in 30 survivors of childhood lymphoma. STUDY DESIGN: Eruption status, root malformations, premature apexification, agenesis, crown anomalies, soft tissue abnormalities, gingival and periodontal status, enamel defects and discolorations, and craniofacial growth status of the subjects were documented and compared with findings in 20 healthy children who served as controls. RESULTS: Statistically significant (P < .05) differences between the study and control groups were found for plaque index, enamel hypoplasias, discolorations, and agenesis. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study suggest that antineoplastic therapy and/or childhood cancer can result in a higher prevalence of various malformations in teeth. Children treated in the early years of their lives displayed the most severe dental defects, suggesting that immature teeth are at a greater risk of developmental disturbances than fully developed teeth.

RESUMO

Mandibular deficiency may be a factor in reduced oropharyngeal airway (OAW) dimensions and related impaired respiratory function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of functional-orthopedic devices in increasing OAW dimensions in children with Class II skeletal patterns (ANB > 4) and clinically deficient mandibles. Comparisons were made between two groups, one comprising 26 treated patients and the other comprising 15 controls. Student's t-tests, paired t-tests, discriminant analyses, and Pearson's r-correlation coefficients were performed to evaluate group differences and to search for characteristics that might suggest which patients would be better candidates for significant increase in OAW dimensions. Compared with controls, OAW dimensions increased significantly in treated patients, especially those with sagittally smaller and more retrognathic maxillomandibular complexes and smaller OAW dimensions.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the vertical skeletal and dentoalveolar changes in the Class II Division 1 cases treated with the activator + occipital headgear combination. The present study was performed on 40 subjects and comprised 20 subjects who had undergone activator + occipital headgear therapy and 20 control subjects who had received no orthodontic treatment. 15 linear and angular measurements were performed on 80 lateral cephalometric films of 40 subjects. By comparing the treatment and control groups, the changes related to growth was eliminated and following results were obtained: SNA and ANB angles were reduced in treatment group (p less than 0.01) and the difference between treatment and control groups were statistically significant (p less than 0.01). Jarabak ratio did not show any change in the treatment group but decreased in the control group (p less than 0.05) and the difference between treatment and control groups was statistically significant (p less than 0.05). The growth of lower anterior alveolar height was inhibited by treatment when compared to control group (p less than 0.01).

RESUMO

In this study, the effect of Begg technique therapy was investigated in cases with excess overbite. The sample consisted of 20 cephalometric films of 10 individuals who passed their active growth period. 20 parameters were measured on every lateral cephalometric film. Differences according to treatment were compared by paired t-test. As a result, the elimination of overbite seemed to be related to dentoalveolar factors.

RESUMO

Reference planes are frequently used in cephalometric researches in order to obtain more reliable results. For this purpose, different reference planes are used. Does the utilization of different reference planes make no difference in the results obtained or do they affect them? The aim of this study is to find an answer to this question. By establishing two different reference planes on the same tracings; the distances of certain anatomic points to these planes are measured on the pre-post treatment and control films. Then, the pre-post means of these measurements are evaluated by t-test. As a result, it is found out that the means and the results of t-test may give different conclusions at the same points of different planes.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of cervical headgear on point B. The study depends on 40 lateral cephalometric films of 20 cases. 10 Class II, 1 cases had undergone cervical headgear therapy (Treatment group) and 10 Class II, 1 cases had received no treatment (Control group). 4 angular and 5 linear measurements were made on the films. By comparing the treatment and control groups, the changes related to growth was eliminated and the following results were obtained; According to SNB angle there was a statistically significant (p less than 0.05) difference between the two groups. SNB angle increased more in the treatment group. But in a measurement which was made to see the linear difference on point B, there wasn't any statistically significant difference between the two groups.

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to evaluate the changes occurring in facial profile in individuals treated with activator and activator + occipital headgear. Our study is based on two treatment groups namely activator and activator + occipital headgear and one control group which received no orthodontic treatment. In each group there were 18 individuals of which 108 lateral cephalometric films were obtained reflecting before and after treatment/control periods. In this research 18 measurements were made. According to the results, it is found out that there exists difference in treatment groups in terms of the movement of lips related to Steiner soft tissue line.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes occurring during Edgewise and Begg technique therapies in skeletal open-bite cases and to compare the two techniques. The material consists of 60 lateral cephalometric films of 30 patients with hyperdivergent skeletal structure, 10 had been treated by Standard Edgewise Technique, the other 10 by Begg technique and the remaining 10 had been used as the Control group which had no treatment. 18 variables were included in the study. To determine the homogeneity of the three groups pretreatment (control) values were examined. Next, the pre and posttreatment (control) values of all the three groups were investigated and they were compared with each other. The overall results show that Edgewise technique restricted the growth of point A more than the Begg technique. The two techniques restricted the spontaneous growth of the mandible, Edgewise technique showed posterior rotation of the mandible in relation to the Begg technique.
