Antiproliferative and antiapoptotic effect of thymoquinone on cancer cells in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: Nigella sativa oil and thymoquinone were comparatively tested in vitro for their effects on human cancer cell lines (glioma,T98; prostate, LnCaP) as well as mouse embryonic fibroblast cell lines (3T3), and for the induction of apoptosis. METHODS: Individual cell lines were treated with thymoquinone and N. sativa oil for 24 and 48 hr. Survival rate with MTT, apoptosis with flow cytometry and caspase-9 mRNA enzyme levels with RT-PCR were determined in vitro. RESULTS: Application of respective concentrations of N. sativa oil (excluding 100 µg/mL for 48 hr) did not change the number of tested cell lines, however, treatment with thymoquinone reduced the number of all cells significantly. Thymoquinone also exerted its apoptosis inducing effect through the activation of caspase-9. CONCLUSION: Differing with the type of cancer cells, thymoquinone posseses a strong contentration and time dependent survival reducing effect on cancer cells via apoptosis (Fig. 6, Ref. 22). Subthreshold carrier-LO phonon dynamics in semiconductors with intermediate polaron coupling: a purely quantum kinetic relaxation channel.

Femtosecond transmission spectra of highly polar CdTe are compared to more covalent GaAs contrasting semiclassical kinetics with two-time quantum kinetics based on the Dyson equation. Nonequilibrium heavy holes in CdTe show ultrafast energy redistribution via the Fröhlich mechanism even if photoexcited below the LO phonon energy. This subthreshold relaxation is a genuine quantum kinetic effect. It gains importance if the polaron self-energy is comparable to the phonon energy. Conservation of the free-particle energies is not required under these conditions.

Ultrafast optical spectroscopy of large-momentum excitons in GaAs.

Highly energetic excitons with wave vectors much larger than that of an absorbed photon are excited in thin GaAs films. We observe propagation beats between three polariton modes up to 300 meV above the absorption edge employing femtosecond transmission spectroscopy. The dispersion relations of the coherent excitations are measured. Ultrafast exciton damping via scattering with nonequilibrium carriers and with phonons is investigated. The dynamics is found to deviate strongly from the relaxation of free carriers. Theoretical simulations are in quantitative agreement with the data.

A comparison of case retrieval times: film versus picture archiving and communications systems.

One of the advantages that a picture archiving and communications system (PACS) is supposed to provide over a film-based operation is improved performance in retrieving images. Although it seems self-evident that this should be so, this experiment was intended to verify this and to provide some time comparisons for the two methods. The experiment consisted of randomly selecting ultrasound and computed tomography cases and determining how long it took to retrieve files at a PACS workstation or in person from the file room. To simulate actual retrieval volumes, a total of 40 cases from current to 6 months old, 20 cases from the past year, and 10 cases more than 1 year old was selected. Results indicate that PACS retrieval can indeed be faster than file room retrieval. However, the difference is less for recent cases than for older cases. For cases 6 or fewer months old, the workstation retrieval was approximately 2.5 minutes faster per case than the film file room. This time difference increased markedly when extended to the 1-year and older-than-1-year groups. This report details the results of this study and provides information about the reliability of the two archives.
