RESUMO
L-Arginine and chronic exercise reduce oxidative stress. However, it is unclear how they affect cardiomyocytes during cardiovascular disease (CVD) development. The aim of this research was to investigate the possible effects of L-arginine supplementation and aerobic training on systemic oxidative stress and their consequences on cardiomyocytes during cardiometabolic disease onset caused by excess fructose. Wistar rats were allocated into four groups: control (C), fructose (F, 10% fructose in water), fructose training (FT; moderate running, 50-70% of the maximal velocity), and fructose arginine (FA; 880 mg/kg/day). Fructose was given for two weeks and fructose plus treatments for the subsequent eight weeks. Body composition, blood glucose, insulin, lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, nitrite, metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) activity, left ventricle histological changes, microRNA-126, -195, and -146, eNOS, p-eNOS, and TNF-α expressions were analyzed. Higher abdominal fat mass, triacylglycerol level, and insulin level were observed in the F group, and both treatments reversed these alterations. Myocardial vascularization was impaired in fructose-fed groups, except in FT. Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy was observed in all fructose-fed groups. TNF-α levels were higher in fructose-fed groups than in the C group, and p-eNOS levels were higher in the FA than in the C and F groups. Lipid peroxidation was higher in the F group than in the FT and C groups. During CVD onset, moderate aerobic exercise reduced lipid peroxidation, and both training and L-arginine prevented metabolic changes caused by excessive fructose. Myocardial vascularization was impaired by fructose, and cardiomyocyte hypertrophy appeared to be influenced by pro-inflammatory and oxidative environments.

RESUMO
Four blood components (glucose, lactate, triglycerides and cholesterol) were determined and compared using a portable device (Accutrend® Plus, ROCHE) and laboratory methods. Blood samples from 20 horses were analyzed (11 geldings and 9 mares, from various breeds with age and weight varying between 8 ± 5 years and 327.60 ± 64.02 Kg, respectively. After complete clinical examination, blood was withdrawn through venipunction of the external jugular and these samples were analyzed using a portable device and compared to laboratory results. Statistical analyses were used to compare both methodologies. The results showed that glucose data were not different with a weak Pearson's correlation and no agreement according to Bland-Altman method. The results obtained for lactate according to both methods were also not in agreement. Triglycerides and cholesterol data could not be compared due to the fact that reference values for resting horses lie below the reading range of the portable device. The present study showed that the use of AccutrendâPlus to determine glucose, lactate, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels, is not adequate in equine internal medicine.

Patellofemoral cartilage degeneration is usually associated with a tight lateral retinaculum (lateral hyperpressure). The position of the patella on the femoral groove under hyperpressure makes reasonable access to the cartilage defects difficult for the arthroscopist. Frequently, the surgeon can barely see the cartilage, and the problem cannot be satisfactorily managed. By performing a lateral release and tilting the patella with a laterally drilled Kirschner wire, the articular surface of the patella can be completely exposed, allowing even perpendicular holes to be drilled whenever necessary.

We present a surgical technique for the treatment of recurring dislocation of the patella. The procedure, based on Galleazzi's tenodesis of the semitendinosus, uses minimal dissection and small incisions to improve cosmetic results and speed recovery. A polyester ligament is passed through a bone tunnel at the midline of the patella and fixed at the medial condyle, thus creating a medial patellofemoral neoligament. We have reviewed the results of 30 knees in 30 patients with an average follow-up of 39 months. Twenty-five patients (83.3%) showed significant improvement of their initial complaints.
