RESUMO

Cotton is one of the most exploited crops in the world, being one of the most important for the Brazilian Northeast. In this region, the use of irrigation is often necessary to meet the water demand of the crop. Water is often used from underground wells that have a large amount of salt in their constitution, which can compromise the development of crops, so it is vital to adopt strategies that reduce salt stress effects on plants, such as the foliar application of hydrogen peroxide. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of foliar application of hydrogen peroxide on the gas exchange, growth, and production of naturally colored cotton under salt stress in the semi-arid region of Paraíba, Brazil. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design in a 5 × 5 factorial scheme, with five salinity levels of irrigation water-ECw (0.3, 2.0, 3.7, 5.4 and 7.1 dS m-1)-and five concentrations of hydrogen peroxide-H2O2 (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 µM), and with three replicates. The naturally colored cotton 'BRS Jade' had its gas exchange, growth, biomass production, and production reduced due to the effects of salt stress, but the plants were able to produce up to the ECw of 3.97 dS m-1. Foliar application of hydrogen peroxide at the estimated concentrations of 56.25 and 37.5 µM reduced the effects of salt stress on the stomatal conductance and CO2 assimilation rate of cotton plants under the estimated ECw levels of 0.73 and 1.58 dS m-1, respectively. In turn, the concentration of 12.5 µM increased water-use efficiency in plants subjected to salinity of 2.43 dS m-1. Absolute and relative growth rates in leaf area increased with foliar application of 100 µM of hydrogen peroxide under ECw of 0.73 and 0.3 dS m-1, respectively. Under conditions of low water salinity (0.3 dS m-1), foliar application of hydrogen peroxide stimulated the biomass formation and production components of cotton.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the experiences of victims of violence in intimate relationships (VIRs) who remain in, return to, or abandon the abusive relationship, as well as examine the type of violence suffered, the existing symptoms, and the motivation to change as explained by the Transtheoretical Model of Change. METHOD: The participants were 38 victims, three males and 35 females, who completed an online questionnaire comprising a section on sociodemographic data, and three instruments, the Self-Reporting Questionnaire 20 (SRQ-20), Marital Violence Inventory (MVI), and the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA). RESULTS: Data analysis has shown that psychological violence was the type of violence most frequently experienced followed by physical and verbal violence, the house of the victims was the local where the violence mostly took place, the help-seeking behaviors were mostly directed to the family and attempts to leave from the abusive relationship is related to the experience of family violence in childhood. Participants were all in the action stage of the change, but aggressor's expectation/promise to change, the existence of children and maintaining the family or marriage, as well as economic difficulties are the main factors that contribute to both remaining in, or returning to, the abusive relationship. CONCLUSION: We will reflect on the social, clinical, and legal implications for the future of research with victims of VIR. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved).

RESUMO

Previous studies have established relationships between the Dark Tetrad traits and sexual violence and its acceptance through myths about this type of violence. Sexual violence is positively associated with machismo, with sexist beliefs having been found to be linked with the Dark Tetrad and with the acceptance of sexual violence. Using a community sample comprising 362 adults between the ages of 18 and 70 (M = 35.6, SD = 14.3) and three self-report measures, this cross-sectional study aimed to explore the mediating role of sexual machismo in the relationship between each of the Dark Tetrad traits and the acceptance of sexual violence, both in the overall sample and by gender, as well as whether a significant variance in this acceptance is explained by the "dark" traits, sexual machismo, and gender. In the regression, sexual machismo (the male) gender, and only Machiavellianism were uniquely associated with the acceptance of sexual violence, and sexual machismo partially mediated the associations between the Dark Tetrad and the acceptance of sexual violence. These findings indicate that being male and higher in sexism is more closely linked with the acceptance of sexual violence than most Dark Tetrad traits. Moreover, the associations between the Dark Tetrad, sexual machismo, and the acceptance of sexual violence were stronger in men, consistent with the notion that these traits facilitate a "male" exploitive mating strategy, which likely also extends to victim-blaming and positive attitudes about sexual violence more broadly. Lastly, the results emphasize the pervasiveness of beliefs about male superiority over women and its relationship with victim-blaming even in women.

RESUMO

Supramolecular peptide hydrogels have many important applications in biomedicine, including drug delivery applications for the sustained release of therapeutic molecules. Targeted and selective drug administration is often preferential to systemic drug delivery, as it can allow reduced doses and can avoid the toxicity and side-effects caused by off-target binding. New discoveries are continually being reported in this rapidly developing field. In this review, we report the latest developments in supramolecular peptide-based hydrogels for drug delivery, focusing primarily on discoveries that have been reported in the last four years (2018-present). We address clinical points, such as peptide self-assembly and drug release, mechanical properties in drug delivery, peptide functionalization, bioadhesive properties and drug delivery enhancement strategies, drug release profiles, and different hydrogel matrices for anticancer drug loading and release.

RESUMO

Superparamagnetic nanoparticles are of high interest for therapeutic applications. In this work, nanoparticles of calcium-doped manganese ferrites (CaxMn1-xFe2O4) functionalized with citrate were synthesized through thermally assisted oxidative precipitation in aqueous media. The method provided well dispersed aqueous suspensions of nanoparticles through a one-pot synthesis, in which the temperature and Ca/Mn ratio were found to influence the particles microstructure and morphology. Consequently, changes were obtained in the optical and magnetic properties that were studied through UV-Vis absorption and SQUID, respectively. XRD and Raman spectroscopy studies were carried out to assess the microstructural changes associated with stoichiometry of the particles, and the stability in physiological pH was studied through DLS. The nanoparticles displayed high values of magnetization and heating efficiency for several alternating magnetic field conditions, compatible with biological applications. Hereby, the employed method provides a promising strategy for the development of particles with adequate properties for magnetic hyperthermia applications, such as drug delivery and cancer therapy.

RESUMO

Supramolecular short peptide-based gels are promising materials for the controlled release of drugs (e.g. chemotherapeutic drugs) owing to the biocompatibility and similarity to cell matrix. However, the drug encapsulation and control over its release, mainly the hydrophilic drugs, can be a cumbersome task. This can be overcome through encapsulation/compartmentalization of drugs in liposomes, which can also enable spatiotemporal control and enhanced drug release through a trigger, such as photothermia. Having this in mind, we explored the assembly of silica-coated gold nanoparticles and liposomes (storage units) with dehydropeptide-based hydrogels as a proof-of-concept to afford peptide-based NIR light-responsive lipogels. Several liposomes compositions were assessed that displayed influence on the final assembly properties by combining with silica-coated gold nanorods (∼106 nm). Gold nanospheres (∼11 nm) were used to study the preparation method, which revealed the importance of initially combine liposomes with nanoparticles and then the gelator solution to achieve a closer proximity of the nanoparticles to the liposomes. The control over a hydrophilic model drug, 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein, was only achieved by its encapsulation in liposomes, in which the presence of silica-coated nanorods further enabled the use of photothermia to induce the liposomes phase transition and stimulate the drug release. Further, both composites, the liposomes and silica-coated gold nanorods, induced a lower elastic modulus, but also provided an enhanced gelation kinetics. Hereby, this work advances fabrication strategies for the development of short peptide-based hydrogels towards on-demand, sustained and controlled release of hydrophilic drugs through photothermia under NIR light irradiation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a public crime, prevalent worldwide and associated with various consequences, which are potentially destructive, both in the short- and the long-term. This systematic review aimed to critically describe and analyze the studies published about the treatments implemented with these victims. METHOD: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, studies were identified through search on EBSCO, PubMed, and Web of Science. Of the 49 articles retrieved, 14 were retained for further analysis, and seven were considered eligible for inclusion, leading to a final sample of seven articles, published between 2011 and 2021. From each study, we extracted objectives, methodological aspects, and main conclusions. Inclusion criteria were as follows: (a) empirical studies that provided psychological treatment for adult victims of CSA; (b) studies that included at least two treatment groups, with or without a control group but with pre- and posttreatment measures; (c) studies whose treatment was directed at the victim. Exclusion criteria were as follows: (a) studies published before 2011; (b) studies that included children and/or adolescents in their sample; (c) case studies; and (d) studies that have not implemented any psychological treatment for adult victims. RESULTS: Most therapeutic approaches have been shown to be effective in reducing at least one of the symptom variables assessed (e.g., anxiety, depression, and PTSD), for which dialectical behavior therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy showed the best results. CONCLUSIONS: Although promising, the inconclusive results reflect the need for quality, controlled studies with a representative sample of CSA victims, which would overcome methodological shortcomings found in the analyzed studies. RESUMO

Executive functions (EF) are higher-order cognitive processes present in the prefrontal cortex and are fundamental in planning, executing and monitoring goal-oriented behaviours. Evaluating EF in early stages of child development is essential for identifying any cognitive alterations in young children, given that it allows for early intervention and minimizes future complications. Additionally, it contributes to a better understanding of this construct in this age bracket, as well as its operational model. Study of EF has recently been the focus of multiple researchers; however, there is still a serious lack of instruments and measurements validated towards children's age bracket. This systematic review's main goal is to evaluate instruments and/or tasks that serve to evaluate and analyse EF and/or their components between the ages of 36 and 72 months. Forty-nine studies were analysed, containing multiple tasks and tools oriented towards EF and their constituent components. Results indicate the existence of various tasks that grade the different components independently from one another; nevertheless, they also confirm the lack of any global measurement instrument or method. Therefore, this systematic review presents itself as an important contribution in the study of EF, stressing not only the importance of further investing into constructing and validating new and better tools for evaluating the construct but also the study of operating models of executive functioning, especially in an age bracket where comprehending it is notoriously difficult.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Psychopathy has a considerable societal cost, which motivates research on the mechanisms that cause individuals to engage and persist in antisocial behaviors. It is known that individuals with marked psychopathic traits or callous-unemotional traits typically engage in higher rates of aggressive behaviors. These traits seem to have roots both in biological and environmental factors. This article aims to clarify, through a comprehensive review of the literature, what kind of traumas experienced in childhood may contribute to the development of a psychopathic personality structure. METHOD: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review to organize such evidence. RESULTS: Childhood maltreatment has been associated with a wide range of maladaptive outcomes, ranging from internalizing to externalizing symptoms. Some have suggested that this range of symptoms is largely attributable to a disruption in the usual parent-child attachment bond, which may occur in parent-child relationships characterized by emotional maltreatment. Many studies now suggest that key features of temperament, such as anger, self-regulation/self-control, and negative emotionality, can be positively influenced through prevention and treatment programs. CONCLUSIONS: This comprehensive review provides information for improving our ability to treat problematic personalities and reduce the risk of future antisocial behavior. RESUMO

Sexual violence (SV) perpetrated by health professionals concerns any sexual conduct, whether physical or verbal (with or without contact), toward a patient. There has been little scientific study and some disagreements have emerged regarding its definition, which has even been confused with violation of professional boundaries. In this descriptive-exploratory study, we aimed to characterize this phenomenon in the Portuguese context, using a sample of 491 participants who completed an online questionnaire adapted for this study. The results showed that 8.96% of the participants (5.5% indirect victims) suffered SV by a health professional, and the sociodemographic characteristics are very similar to those of SV in other contexts. Thus, after confirming this is not a problem alien to the Portuguese reality, we discuss the practical implications for prevention and intervention with victims.

RESUMO

This study intended to examine rape myth acceptance (RMA) among police officers and its relationship with sociodemographic data, length of service, specific training in the field, and professional experience with victims of rape. To this end, we applied the Sexual Violence Beliefs Scale (ECVS) and controlled for sociodemographic data, as well as professional experience and specific training in the field, through a self-report questionnaire. The sample was composed of 400 police officers from a city in the north of Portugal, aged between 29 and 54 years, and most were men (94.3%). We found that tolerance to overall sexual violence exhibits positive correlations with age and length of service, as well as negative correlations with education levels. Differences were also found regarding gender, with men exhibiting greater tolerance/acceptance of overall sexual violence. It was also found that officers who exhibit higher tolerance/acceptance for sexual violence, overall, are those who do not consider it relevant to receive specific training in the field of sexual violence to perform their duties, who report not having any professional experience with cases of sexual violence and also do not consider it necessary to have specific abilities for these types of cases. Implications for decision-making in legal proceedings are discussed, stressing the need for specific specialization in intervention with victims of sexual assault, with a strong practical component.

RESUMO

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a phenomenon that is ubiquitous to all cultures and social classes. It has short- and long-term consequences, with specific treatment models that have been developed and adapted from psychological intervention models. A wide variety of studies have sought to evaluate the results of treatments with adult CSA survivors. This study presents an overview of research on the treatment of adult victims of CSA, by reviewing the existing literature on the types of treatment and the most studied psychotherapeutic avenues, and reports the findings related to the efficacy of these treatments. It is possible to conclude that psychological intervention exhibits benefits in the reduction of symptoms resulting from the experience of CSA and demonstrates the need to conduct further research on the effectiveness of intervention.

RESUMO

Self-assembled peptide-based gels provide several advantages for technological applications. Recently, the co-assembly of gelators has been a strategy to modulate and tune gel properties and even implement stimuli-responsiveness. However, it still comprises limitations regarding the required library of compounds and outcoming properties. Hence, efforts have been made to combine peptide-based gels and (in)organic composites (e.g., magnetic nanoparticles, metal nanoparticles, liposomes, graphene, silica, clay, titanium dioxide, cadmium sulfide) to endow stimuli-responsive materials and achieve suitable properties in several fields ranging from optoelectronics to biomedical. Herein, we discuss the recent developments with composite peptide-based gels including the fabrication, tunability of gels' properties, and challenges on (bio)technological applications.

RESUMO

In romantic relationships, individual differences are determinant factors for relational quality. Specifically, romantic attachment (RA) and difficulties in emotional regulation influence each other and may have predictive potential for the perceived dyadic adjustment (DA) level. This paper aims to identify the developmental parallel between behavioral patterns built since childhood and the construction of the emotional regulation skills that characterize them. Our analysis was based on the attachment theory and the concepts of romantic relationship and DA. In this way, we sought to further the understanding of relationship dynamics, beyond the usual focus on a single element and on associative relationships, and by exploring other effects among the different dimensions of relational functioning. In particular, we explored the predictive ability of emotional regulation patterns (more flexible individual characteristics) in discriminating between RA styles (more perennial influences), and their impact on the quality of romantic relationships, in the anticipation of dyadic adjustment variations.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to analyze the expression of the CD63, S100A6, and GNB2L1genes, which participate in mechanisms related to the complex pathophysiology of endometriosis. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted with 40 women who were diagnosed with endometriosis, and 15 fertile and healthy women. Paired samples of eutopic endometrium and endometriotic lesions (peritoneal and ovarian endometriotic implants) were obtained from the women with endometriosis in the proliferative (n = 20) or secretory phases (n = 20) of the menstrual cycle. As controls, paired endometrial biopsy samples were collected from the healthy women in the proliferative (n = 15) and secretory (n = 15) phases of the same menstrual cycle. We analyzed the expression levels of the CD63, S100A6, and GNB2L1 genes by real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: An increase in CD63, S100A6, and GNB2L1 gene transcript levels was observed in the ectopic implants compared with the eutopic endometrium of the women with and without endometriosis, regardless of the phase of the menstrual cycle. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the CD63, S100A6, and GNB2L1 genes may be involved in the pathogenesis of endometriosis, since they participate in mechanisms such as inhibition of apoptosis, angiogenesis and cell proliferation, which lead to the loss of cell homeostasis in the ectopic endometrium, thus contributing to the implantation and survival of the tissue in the extrauterine environment.

(AU)

Introduction: Considering the high complacency of the chest wall in newborns, physical therapy maneuvers, when applied to the chest, must be correctly indicated and evaluated through reliable and non-invasive tools, in order to ensure their efficacy and safety. Objective: To evaluate the thoracoabdominal mobility by biophotogrammetry (MT) in newborns after vibrocompression maneuvers (VC) and thoracoabdominal rebalancing (RTA). Methods: The analysis was performed in 40 infants, aged > 37 weeks, supine, upper limbs in flexion, abduction and external rotation and flexed hip. Each newborn performed a type of maneuver (VC or RTA) and was filmed for 60 seconds before and after therapy, by a digital camera perpendicular to the plane of movement. The biophotogrammetric analysis was performed by AutoCAD® Software and the results were converted to metric units (cm2). Results: The RTA increased the amplitude of the thoracoabdominal mobility and the VC decreased this amplitude. The mean difference in the range of the thoracoabdominal mobility before and after, for these two maneuvers was + 0.20 cm2 in the RTA and -1.72 cm2 in the VC, but did not present a statistically significant difference. Conclusion: The RTA and VC maneuvers presented antonym results on the thoracoabdominal mobility, however this difference was not statistically significant. (AU)

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In newborns delivered by cesarean section, there is less chest compression and little amount of fluid is drained by gravity, which temporarily reduces thoracoabdominal mobility OBJETIVE: The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of the type of delivery on newborns Thoracoabdominal Mobility METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study with newborns of gestational age between 37 and 41 weeks, of both sexes, with up to 72 hours of life, breathing in ambient air and born by normal delivery or cesarean section. The Thoracoabdominal Mobility was evaluated by videogrammetry using MATLAB Software and considered, in metric units (cm2), as the difference between the highest and lowest thoracoabdominal expansibility for each respiratory cycle RESULTS: Twenty-six infants were included, 11 were male and 50% were born by cesarean section. The mean gestational age was 39 ± 0,9 and 28 ± 18 hours of life. The mobility, difference between greater and lesser expansion, of the thoracic area in vaginal and cesarean delivery was 6 ± 3 cm2 and 7 ± 5 cm2 and the abdominal area was 29 ± 22 cm2 and 21 ± 14 cm2, respectively. This difference was not statistically significant between the two types of delivery for the thoracic area, but was statistically different for the abdominal area (p= 0.01). And the higher the respiratory rate, the lower the abdominal mobility (r= -0.57, p= 0.02 CONCLUSION: The data indicate that the type of delivery seems to influence abdominal mobility and respiratory rate. In the studied sample, newborns with cesarean section presented lower abdominal mobility

Abstract Introduction: Expiratory flow increase is a maneuver of respiratory physical therapy that promotes flow direction to the upper airways however, when applied in newborns, it may result in changes of thoracoabdominal mobility. Objective: To evaluate the thoracoabdominal mobility by photogrammetry in newborns after expiratory flow increase technique. Methods: Experimental blind study performed with newborns in supine position on a support table with upper limbs flexed, abducted and externally rotated and hip flexed at 110°. Adhesive markers were allocated for geometric delimitation of the thoracoabdominal compartment and expiratory flow increase technique was performed for 5 minutes with the therapist's hands on the thorax and abdomen. Newborns were filmed before and after the maneuver and the frames were analyzed in AutoCAD® software by a blinded investigator at the time of the procedure. The largest and the smallest thoracoabdominal area were expressed in cm2 and the mean values were compared between two moments (pre and post maneuver) by paired t test. Results: Twenty newborns with a mean age of 39 weeks were included. Before the maneuver, thoracoabdominal area was 56.1 cm2 during expiration and 59.7 cm2 during inspiration, and after the maneuver the value was 56.2 cm2 during expiration and 59.8 cm2 during inspiration, with no statistical difference between before and after (p = 0.97, p = 0.92, respectively). Conclusion: Results demonstrate that expiratory flow increase technique does not seem to change thoracoabdominal mobility of healthy newborns.

A cidreira (Lippia alba (Mill.) N.E.

Objective: to build an integral care line for workers with repetitive strain injuries. Methods: action-research with actions of the care line were developed in four workshops with the participation of 32 professionals, managers and users of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare. Actions which obtained 80.0% agreement of the participants were included in the care line. Results: the Family Health Strategy was defined as the main gateway, coordinating and organizing the care through surveillance of workers’ health in its territory. As a secondary gateway, in urgent cases, referral hospitals were cited. The specialized care network was responsible for diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of referred cases. Conclusion: the care line developed by the action-research allowed the visualization of a flow to attention to workers and can be a reference for other municipalities.
