RESUMO

We present ProtoColVR, a methodology and a plugin designed for gathering requirements and collaborative rapid prototyping of virtual reality training simulators. Our methodology outlines the utilization of current technologies, the involvement of stakeholders during design and development, and the implementation of simulator creation through multiple iterations. We incorporate open-source tools and freely available environments like Twine and Unity to establish a reference implementation for requirements gathering and rapid prototyping. ProtoColVR is the outcome of our collaboration with a hospital and our Navy, and it has undergone testing in a development Jam. From these tests, we have gained valuable insights, including the ability to create functional prototypes within multidisciplinary teams, enhance communication among different roles, and streamline requirements gathering while improving our understanding of the virtualized environment.

ABSTRACT Background maternal death represents one of the most notable events in the conflicts of sexual and reproductive health in the world. The high mortality from this cause in the world is unacceptable. However, estimates for determining the burden of maternal morbidity and mortality health are still limited. Objective to determine the burden of mortality related to pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium in Cuba between 2005 and 2018. Methods a descriptive study was carried out, with national cross-sectional data and annual periodicity. The universe of study was made up of all the deaths that occurred during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium in the period 2005-2018, in Cuba (N = 831). The mortality ratio, years of life potentially lost due to mortality, the percentage, the average and the trend were calculated. Results of the total number of deceased due to deaths that occurred during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium, 463 were due to direct death; 247 for indirect death; and 247, due to other deaths 121. The ratio averaged 48.8 deaths for every 100 000 live births. Years of life potentially lost were 42,582: 23,433 for direct deaths, 12,724 for indirect deaths, and 6,425 for other deaths. Conclusion direct obstetric deaths were the most frequent and those with the greatest impact on life expectancy; while indirect obstetrician women showed a tendency to increase over time. For other deaths, women died at an earlier age.

RESUMO

The genus Orthocis Casey is represented by 46 species occurring in insular and continental areas of the World, except for the Antarctic. Three Orthocis species are currently known from South America: the Andean O. elguetai Lopes-Andrade, from Chile; the Neotropical O. apicipennis (Pic) from a single locality in South Brazil; and O. platensis Brèthes from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Orthocis platensis is here redescribed and recorded for the first time from South and Southeast Brazil.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe individuals seeking care for injury at a major emergency department (ED) in southern Puerto Rico in the months after Hurricane Maria on September 20, 2017. METHODS: After informed consent, we used a modified version of the Natural Disaster Morbidity Surveillance Form to determine why patients were visiting the ED during October 16, 2017-March 28, 2018. We analyzed visits where injury was reported as the primary reason for visit and whether it was hurricane-related. RESULTS: Among 5 116 patients, 573 (11%) reported injury as the primary reason for a visit. Of these, 10% were hurricane-related visits. The most common types of injuries were abrasions, lacerations, and cuts (43% of all injury visits and 50% of hurricane-related visits). The most common mechanisms of injury were falls, slips, trips (268, 47%), and being hit by/or against an object (88, 15%). Most injury visits occurred during the first 3 months after the hurricane. CONCLUSIONS: Surveillance after Hurricane Maria identified injury as the reason for a visit for about 1 in 10 patients visiting the ED, providing evidence on the patterns of injuries in the months following a hurricane. Public health and emergency providers can use this information to anticipate health care needs after a disaster.

RESUMO

Cis renominatus Sandoval-Gómez, Lopes-Andrade Lawrence, 2014, and Paratrichapus javanus (Pic, 1937) were originally described in the genus Xylographus Mellié, 1847. Their original descriptions are anecdotal and do not provide information on the morphology of male abdominal terminalia, which is essential for accurate identification of ciid beetles. Our aim is to redescribe C. renominatus and P. javanus based on careful examination of lectotypes and paralectotypes, and also on additional specimens of C. renominatus identified by us. The most remarkable feature of C. renominatus is the morphology of male genitalia, with penis about twice as long as tegmen, very slender, subparallel-sided, with apex hook-shaped and base spatula-shaped. Paratrichapus javanus is the largest species of the genus (length at least 3.50 mm) and is characterized by its very expanded and rounded metatibiae that bear about 25 spines, and by the anterocephalic edge of males bearing two tubercles with two tufts of bristles between them.

RESUMO

Here we use karyomorphometrical analysis to characterize and evaluate the karyotype of the turtle ant Cephalotes pusillus (Klug, 1824). This is the first representative of this diverse ant genus to be cytogenetically studied. They bear a diploid chromosome set of 44 chromosomes, which, according to the centromeric index, are metacentric, submetacentric, and subtelocentric. This small ant is quite widely distributed in the Neotropics and seems to be well adapted to living in disturbed areas. Here we report the species nesting on dead trunks used to build fences at countryside houses and farms. On these nests, we observed some never reported behavior of C. pusillus: the ants appear to be able to dig by actively removing small fragments of dead wood fiber, hence expanding their nest cavities. It was not thought that Cephalotes species had this ability, given that they nest in preexisting cavities. Our observations are initial remarks that the small plier-like mandibles of C. pusillus may not be a constraint for this species, adding to our knowledge on ant nesting biology.

RESUMO

The Ciidae genus Anoplocis was established by Makoto Kawanabe (1996) based on the type species Ennearthron poriae Nakane & Nobuki, 1955 from Japan. Additionally, he described the Japanese species Anoplocis ryukyuensis Kawanabe, 1996. However, the name Anoplocis was previously proposed by Arthur M. Lea (1913) for a genus of true weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), with its type species Anoplocis ferrugineus Lea, 1913 from Australia. In consequence, the genus Anoplocis Kawanabe, 1996 is a junior homonym of the genus Anoplocis Lea, 1913. According to Article 60 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, we propose the replacement name Aliocis nom. nov. for Anoplocis Kawanabe, 1996. New combinations are here proposed for the two species included in this genus: Aliocis poriae (Nakane & Nobuki, 1955) comb. nov. and Aliocis ryukyuensis (Kawanabe, 1996) comb. nov.

Background: Cardiovascular disease is associated with lipid abnormalities, hyperglycaemia and overweight. Objectives: To study the relationship between serum lipids and fasting glycaemia with body mass index and waist circumference. Materials and methods: 372 adolescents, 12 to 15 years, participated in a cross sectional study. Associations between Body Mass Index and waist circumference with serum lipids and glycaemia were evaluated. Results: The following prevalence was found: CT>170 mg/dL, 24.7%; LDL- c >110 mg/dL, 12.6%; TG>90 mg/dL, 34.1%; HDL-c<45 mg/dL, 6.1% and glycaemia >125mg/dL 10.5%. Overweight prevalence, BMI> p85 was 14.7% and risk of high waist circumference and atypical values was 23.6%. According Chi2, in girls differences were found between glycaemia > 125mg/dl according BMI and WC (p <0.001) and in boys between HDL-c <45mg/dL according WC (p = 0.037) and between TG > 90 mg / dL according BMI (p = 0.040) and WC (p = 0.036). Conclusions: In adolescents studied the prevalence of overweight and central adiposity were high, the relationship between altered TG, HDL-c and hyperglycemia overweight and central adiposity values depend on sex.

Venezuelan equine encephalitis is an infectious illness caused by an arbovirus of the Togaviridae family; it is transmitted to man from horses or birds through stings of mosquitoes, constituting a zoonotic disease. Cuba provides internationalist collaboration in countries where this illness is considered endemic and dangerous from the economical and sanitary point of view. An epidemiological study to determine the vulnerability of introduction and local transmission of the Venezuelan equine encephalitis was carried out in the Health Area of Delicias village in 2009. The following variables were used: collaborators country of origin, kinds of transmitter mosquitoes, equine population and risk zones. Three endemic countries were identified; the highest quantity of collaborators were in Venezuela, with 66 (85, 7 per cent), followed by Ecuador and Haiti that had only one (1, 3 per cent). The Popular Council with the highest quantity of collaborators in endemic zones was number 3, with 50, for an 87, 7 per cent. Eleven kinds of mosquitoes were identified in the area, from which 4 are transmitters of the EVV (Culex, Mansonia, Psorophora, and Anopheles); the equine population is distributed in the whole territory. The northern part of Delicias village and San Manuel village were the areas with the highest risk for the disease; 12 communities assisted by the family doctors were considered in high risk for local transmission (AU)

RESUMO

Grossicis gen. nov. is described based on G. diadematus (Mellié, 1849) comb. nov., the type species, and G. laminicornis sp. nov. from Brazil. Diagnostic characters of the genus include the apical maxillary palpomere abruptly expanded with sensilla distributed along the apical margin, dual elytral punctation, elytral sutural flange diverging near apex, prosternum carinate, protibial apex bearing a row of spines and outer apical angle with a conspicuous tooth, ovipositor bearing well developed gonostyli with almost half the length of gonocoxites, baculum of each proximal gonocoxite oblique, and anterior apex of each paraproctal baculum contiguous and joined to each proctigeral baculum, their limits being barely discernible, forming an arc anteriorly. Comparisons were made with other 37 ciid genera, and the new genus is provisionally placed in Ciini. A key to species of Grossicis gen. nov. is provided, together with the description of external morphology of adults, as well as the morphology of male and female terminalia of both species.
