OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the prevalence of Candida spp. colonization in oral leukoplakia and oral lichen planus lesions, verify the influence of systemic and local factors, besides identify and determine the in vitro antifungal susceptibility profile of Candida species. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Samples were collected by swabbing from oral lesions and healthy mucosa and cultured on Sabouraud Dextrose and CHROMagar® Candida plates. Species identification was confirmed with MALDI-TOF MS analysis. RESULTS: Candida spp. was found in 36.8% of cases of oral leukoplakia and 18.2% of cases of oral lichen planus. Candida albicans was the only species found in oral lichen planus lesions (n = 2, 100%) and the most prevalent in oral leukoplakia (n = 5, 76.4%). Among the non-albicans Candida species found in oral leukoplakia were C. parapsilosis (n = 2, 25.5%) and C. tropicalis (n = 1, 14.1%). Candida isolates were susceptible to all antifungals tested. CONCLUSION: C. albicans was the most commonly found species in the studied lesions. No correlation was found between systemic and local factors with positive cases of oral lichen planus. However, smoking and alcohol consumption may be associated with positive cases of oral leukoplakia, especially the non-homogeneous clinical form. In addition, there is a possible predisposition to associated Candida colonization in cases of epithelial dysplasia found in oral leukoplakia. The antifungal medications tested showed excellent efficacy against isolates.

Fungal infections have emerged worldwide, and azole antifungals are widely used to control these infections. However, the emergence of antifungal resistance has been compromising the effectiveness of these drugs. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the antifungal and cytotoxic activities of the nine new 1,2,3 triazole compounds derived from thymol that were synthesized through Click chemistry. The binding mode prediction was carried out by docking studies using the crystallographic structure of Lanosterol 14α-demethylase G73E mutant from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The new compounds showed potent antifungal activity against Trichophyton rubrum but did not show relevant action against Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans. For T. rubrum, molecules nº 5 and 8 showed promising results, emphasizing nº 8, whose fungicidal and fungistatic effects were similar to fluconazole. In addition, molecule nº 8 showed low toxicity for keratinocytes and fibroblasts, concluding that this compound demonstrates promising characteristics for developing a new drug for dermatophytosis caused by T. rubrum, or serves as a structural basis for further research.

Objective: To describe the clinical and radiological evolution of lesions during and after treatment in patients diagnosed with neuroparacoccidioidomycosis (NPCM). Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study of the medical records, computed tomography scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of patients with NPCM treated between September 2013 and January 2022. Results: Of 36 cases of NPCM, eight were included in the study. One patient presented only with pachymeningeal and skull involvement, and seven presented with pseudotumors in the brain. Collectively, the eight patients presented with 52 lesions, of which 46 (88.5%) were supratentorial. There were 32 lesions with a diameter ≤ 1.2 cm, of which 27 (84.4%) disappeared during the treatment. In three cases, there were lesions > 1.2 cm that showed a characteristic pattern of evolution on MRI: an eccentric gadolinium contrast-enhanced nodule, with a subsequent decreased in the size and degree of contrast enhancement of the lesions. Conclusion: In NPCM, supratentorial lesions seem to predominate. Lesions ≤ 1.2 cm tend to disappear completely during treatment. Lesions > 1.2 cm tend to present with a similar pattern, designated the "Star of Bethlehem sign", throughout treatment.


Objetivo: Descrever a evolução clínica e radiológica das lesões durante e após o tratamento de pacientes diagnosticados com neuroparacoccidioidomicose (NPCM). Materiais e Métodos: Revisamos os prontuários médicos, estudos de tomografia computadorizada e ressonância magnética (RM) de pacientes com NPCM de nossa instituição, no período de setembro de 2013 a janeiro de 2022. Resultados: Dos 36 casos de NPCM, oito foram incluídos no presente estudo. Um caso apresentava apenas envolvimento paquimeníngeo e ósseo craniano e sete casos apresentavam lesões encefálicas pseudotumorais, totalizando 52 lesões, sendo 46 (88,5%) supratentoriais. Dentre 32 lesões com diâmetro ≤ 1,2 cm, 27 (84,4%) apresentaram resolução completa durante o tratamento. Três casos apresentaram padrão semelhante de evolução da lesão na RM em lesões > 1,2 cm, caracterizado pelo aparecimento de nódulo excêntrico com impregnação pelo gadolínio, seguido de redução das dimensões e do realce nodular pelo contraste nos estudos subsequentes. Conclusão: A NPCM apresenta-se predominantemente com lesões supratentoriais. Lesões ≤ 1,2 cm tendem a desaparecer completamente durante o tratamento. Lesões > 1,2 cm tendem a apresentar um padrão de imagem de RM característico ao longo do tratamento, descrito como o "sinal da Estrela de Belém".

Sporotrichosis is a neglected subcutaneous fungal infection that affects humans and animals worldwide caused by species belonging to the genus Sporothrix. This study aims to examine the range of genetic variations, assess molecular epidemiology significance, and explore potential modes of transmission of the Sporothrix species associated with the current sporotrichosis outbreaks in Espírito Santo, Brazil. In this investigation, 262 samples were evaluated, including 142 from humans and 120 from felines, collected between 2016 and 2021. The isolates were identified based on morphological and molecular characteristics. Sexual idiomorphs were determined by mating-type PCR using primers specific to the MAT1-1 and MAT1-2 loci. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was employed to assess the genetic variability of Sporothrix spp. Finally, antifungal susceptibility testing was performed following the CLSI M38-A2 protocol. Of the 142 human samples, 125 were identified as S. brasiliensis and 17 as S. schenckii s. str. The presence of S. brasiliensis was overwhelming (100%) during outbreaks, highlighting the significant role of domestic cats in the emergence of this species. Heterothallism was the only observed mating strategy. However, the MAT1-2 idiomorph was predominant in cases of cat-transmitted sporotrichosis (χ2 = 202.976; p < 0.0001). Our AFLP results show significant intraspecific variability observed among S. brasiliensis isolates in Espírito Santo. Different genotypes forming subgroups within the same population suggest that these isolates do not originate from a single ancestor, indicating multiple emergences. Furthermore, terbinafine was the antifungal with the best results in vitro. However, in clinical practice, itraconazole remains the primary treatment choice. Sporotrichosis continues to advance in the state; therefore, the health system must outline one-health strategies to contain the disease to prevent future epidemics.

Aim: To evaluate the impact of the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic on antibiotic dispensation in three Brazilian hospitals. Methods: Stock movement was accessed from pharmacy databases and microbiological reports from 2018 to 2021. Results: Reduced antibiotic dispensation occurred during 2020 in all hospitals. The most significant reduction was in April at Hospital Doutor Jayme dos Santos Neves (∼58%), and in May at Hospital Doutor Roberto Arnizaut Silvares (∼66%) and Hospital Doutor Dório Silva (∼29%). However, azithromycin dispensation increased in all hospitals in 2020. Macrolide-resistant bacterial isolates rose from 66.6% in 2019 to 77.1% in 2020 and 88.3% in 2021. Conclusion: Despite reduced antibiotic dispensation, the increase in azithromycin consumption in 2020 highlights the urgency to monitor macrolide resistance after the pandemic and improve stewardship activities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic fungal disease caused by the thermodimorphic fungi Paracoccidioides spp. Their distribution is highly variable. Paracoccidioides lutzii is predominantly found in North and Middle-West Brazil and Ecuador. This study evaluated the clinicopathological characteristics of 10 patients diagnosed with PCM caused by P. lutzii in a reference center located in southeastern Brazil. DESIGN: Double immunodiffusion assay (DID) was used to investigate 35 patients' sera with negative serology for P. brasiliensis against a P. lutzii CFA (cell-free antigen). RESULTS: Out of the 35 retested patients, 10 (28.6%) were positive for P. lutzii CFA. Four patients did not report any displacement to P. lutzii endemic areas. Our results reinforce the importance of using different antigens when testing patients with clinical manifestations of PCM and negative serological tests for P. brasiliensis, primarily in cases of the report of displacement to or former residence in P. lutzii endemic regions. CONCLUSIONS: The availability of tests for different Paracoccidioides species antigens is fundamental for reaching an adequate diagnosis, patient follow-up, and definition of prognosis.

Sporotrichosis is the main subcutaneous mycosis worldwide transmitted by animal or plant vectors and often escalates to outbreaks or epidemics. The current cat-transmitted sporotrichosis driven by Sporothrix brasiliensis has become a significant public health issue in South America. Transmission dynamics remain enigmatic due to the lack of development of polymorphic markers for molecular epidemiological analysis. This study used a high-throughput mining strategy to characterize simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers from Sporothrix genomes. A total of 118,140-143,912 SSR loci were identified (82,841-98,369 unique markers), with a 3651.55-3804.65 SSR/Mb density and a majority of dinucleotides motifs (GC/CG). We developed a panel of 15 highly polymorphic SSR markers suitable for genotyping S. brasiliensis, S. schenckii, and S. globosa. PCR amplification revealed 240 alleles in 180 Sporothrix isolates with excellent polymorphic information content (PIC = 0.9101), expected heterozygosity (H = 0.9159), and discriminating power (D = 0.7127), supporting the effectiveness of SSR markers in uncovering cryptic genetic diversity. A systematic population genetic study estimated three clusters, corresponding to S. brasiliensis (population 1, n = 97), S. schenckii (population 2, n = 49), and S. globosa (population 3, n = 34), with a weak signature of mixed ancestry between populations 1 and 2 or 3 and 2. Partitioning of genetic variation via AMOVA revealed highly structured populations (ΦPT = 0.539; Nm = 0.213; p < 0.0001), with approximately equivalent genetic variability within (46%) and between (54%) populations. Analysis of SSR diversity supports Rio de Janeiro (RJ) as the center of origin for contemporary S. brasiliensis infections. The recent emergence of cat-transmitted sporotrichosis in northeastern Brazil indicates an RJ-Northeast migration resulting in founder effects during the introduction of diseased animals into sporotrichosis-free areas. Our results demonstrated high cross-species transferability, reproducibility, and informativeness of SSR genetic markers, helping dissect deep and fine-scale genetic structures and guiding decision making to mitigate the harmful effects of the expansion of cat-transmitted sporotrichosis.

OBJECTIVE: The identification of Candida spp. in denture stomatitis, the clinical manifestations, and the antifungal susceptibility profile lead to a correct and individualized therapeutic management of the patients. This study is aimed at investigating the clinical manifestations and epidemiological and microbiological characteristics of Candida-associated denture stomatitis. DESIGN: The samples were obtained by swabbing the oral mucosa of the subjects and then seeded onto Sabouraud Dextrose Agar and onto CHROMagar® Candida plates. The identification at the species level was confirmed by Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry. Clinical classification was performed according to the criteria proposed by Newton (1962): (i) pinpoint hyperemia, (ii) diffuse hyperemia, and (iii) granular hyperemia. For carrying out the antifungal susceptibility testing, we adopted the CLSI M27-S4 protocol. RESULTS: C. albicans was the most prevalent species in our study. Regarding non-albicans Candida species, C. glabrata was the most common species isolated from the oral mucosa (n = 4, 14.8%), while in the prosthesis, it was C. tropicalis (n = 4, 14.8%). The most prevalent clinical manifestation was pinpoint hyperemia and diffuse hyperemia. Candida albicans, C. glabrata, and C. parapsilosis were susceptible to all the tested antifungals. Concerning fluconazole and micafungin, only two strains showed dose-dependent sensitivity (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), 1 µg/mL) and intermediate sensitivity (MIC, 0.25 µg/mL). One C. tropicalis strain was resistant to voriconazole (MIC, 8 µg/mL). CONCLUSIONS: C. albicans was the most common species found in oral mucosa and prosthesis. The tested antifungal drugs showed great activity against most isolates. The most prevalent clinical manifestations were Newton's type I and type II.

Coccidioidomycosis (CM) and paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) are systemic mycoses that are highly endemic in Latin America and have recently been included on the World Health Organization (WHO) Fungal Priority Pathogens List. Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii are recognized as etiological agents of CM, with peculiarities in their geographic distribution. The genus Paracoccidioides now includes Paracoccidioides lutzii and the Paracoccidioides brasiliensis complex, which encompasses four phylogenetic species. In both diseases, pulmonary signs and symptoms are the main reasons for patients to seek medical assistance, and they are frequently misdiagnosed as tuberculosis. In this paper, we present a critical view of the strategies for diagnosis and clinical management of CM and PCM. Over the past few decades, there has been an increase in the number of reports of endemic fungal infections in areas previously thought to be "non-endemic" due to climate change and increased travel, among other factors. Learning to recognize their main epidemiological aspects and clinical manifestations is crucial so that clinicians can include them in the differential diagnosis of lung disease and avoid late diagnosis.

Abstract Objectives: to analyze the donation of human milk at the Banco de Incentivo e Apoio a Amamentação (BIAMA) (Breastfeeding Incentive and Support Bank) from 2018 to 2020. Methods: normative assessment, descriptive and exploratory character, with a quantitative approach and focus on the Donabedian Model. Study with a locus at BIAMA at Dom Malan Hospital, in the city of Petrolina-PE, based on registrations from the online platform of the Rede Brasileira de Bancos de Leite Humano (Brazilian Network of Human Milk Banks), with data from BIAMA from 2018 to 2020 and field activities. Results: in 2020, there was a decrease in the number of group assistance and medical consultations, in contrast to the increase in nursing consultations. Most of the milk supply comes from the external public, and in 2020 there was a reduction number of donors and in the volume of human milk collected. Conclusions: COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on BIAMA activities and on milk donation, however, the use of new means of communication for patient care was observed. Even so, new donor recruitment strategies must be implemented. Regarding the main norms that regulate the operation of Human Milk Banks, most of the items listed are obeyed by BIAMA.


Resumo Objetivos: analisar a doação de leite humano no Banco de Incentivo e Apoio a Amamentação (BIAMA) no período de 2018 a 2020. Métodos: avaliação normativa, de caráter descritivo e exploratório, com abordagem quantitativa e enfoque no Modelo Donabedian. Estudo com lócus no BIAMA do Hospital Dom Malan, na cidade de Petrolina-PE, a partir de registros da plataforma online da Rede Brasileira de Bancos de Leite Humano, com dados do BIAMA de 2018 a 2020 e atividades de campo. Resultados: em 2020, houve um decréscimo no número de atendimentos em grupo e de consultas médicas, em contrapartida, ao aumento das consultas de enfermagem. A maior parte do abastecimento de leite advém do público externo, e em 2020 foi observado uma redução no número de doadoras e no volume de leite humano coletado. Conclusões: a pandemia de COVID-19 repercutiu de forma negativa em atividades do BIAMA e na doação de leite, no entanto, foi observado a utilização de novos meios de comunicação para atendimento dos pacientes. Ainda assim, novas estratégias para recrutamento de doadoras devem ser implementadas. Em relação às principais normas que regulamentam o funcionamento de Bancos de Leite Humano, a maioria dos itens elencados são obedecidos pelo BIAMA.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic mycosis endemic to Latin America caused by thermodimorphic fungi of the genus Paracoccidioides. In the last two decades, enhanced understanding of the phylogenetic species concept and molecular variations has led to changes in this genus' taxonomic classification. Although the impact of the new species on clinical presentation and treatment remains unclear, they can influence diagnosis when serological methods are employed. Further, although the infection is usually acquired in rural areas, the symptoms may manifest years or decades later when the patient might be living in the city or even in another country outside the endemic region. Brazil accounts for 80% of PCM cases worldwide, and its incidence is rising in the northern part of the country (Amazon region), owing to new settlements and deforestation, whereas it is decreasing in the south, owing to agriculture mechanization and urbanization. Clusters of the acute/subacute form are also emerging in areas with major human intervention and climate change. Advances in diagnostic methods (molecular and immunological techniques and biomarkers) remain scarce, and even the reference center's diagnostics are based mainly on direct microscopic examination. Classical imaging findings in the lungs include interstitial bilateral infiltrates, and eventually, enlargement or calcification of adrenals and intraparenchymal central nervous system lesions are also present. Besides itraconazole, cotrimoxazole, and amphotericin B, new azoles may be an alternative when the previous ones are not tolerated, although few studies have investigated their use in treating PCM.

Sporotrichosis, a human and animal disease caused by Sporothrix species, is the most important implantation mycosis worldwide. Sporothrix taxonomy has improved in recent years, allowing important advances in diagnosis, epidemiology, and treatment. Molecular epidemiology reveals that S. brasiliensis remains highly prevalent during the cat-transmitted sporotrichosis outbreaks in South America and that the spread of S. brasiliensis occurs through founder effects. Sporothrix globosa and S. schenckii are cosmopolitan on the move, causing major sapronoses in Asia and the Americas, respectively. In this emerging scenario, one-health approaches are required to develop a creative, effective, and sustainable response to tackle the spread of sporotrichosis. In the 21st century, it has become vital to speciate Sporothrix, and PCR is the main pillar of molecular diagnosis, aiming at the detection of the pathogen DNA from clinical samples through multiplex assays, whose sensitivity reaches remarkably three copies of the target. The treatment of sporotrichosis can be challenging, especially after the emergence of resistance to azoles and polyenes. Alternative drugs arising from discoveries or repositioning have entered the radar of basic research over the last decade and point to several molecules with antifungal potential, especially the hydrazone derivatives with great in vitro and in vivo activities. There are many promising developments for the near future, and in this review, we discuss how these trends can be applied to the Sporothrix-sporotrichosis system to mitigate the advance of an emerging and re-emerging disease.

Trichosporon spp. are a constituent of the normal flora of humans that can cause both superficial and invasive infections, mainly in immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts, respectively. Herein, we a report of Trichosporon asahii causing subcutaneous fungal infection (SFI) in an immunocompetent patient after carpal tunnel surgery. Although susceptible to fluconazole, the treatment of SFI failed even using high doses of this azole. The skin lesion improved following the administration of voriconazole. We conducted a literature minireview searching reports on SFI in immunocompetent patients to check for epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic, and outcome characteristics. A total of 32 cases were reported. Despite being uncommon, the clinical suspicion and early diagnosis of SFI in immunocompetent patients undergoing previous surgery are important. Our study indicated that the azoles are the most active antifungal agents against Trichosporon spp., except for fluconazole, and voriconazole can be considered the first therapeutic option.

We verified the clinical-epidemiological, microbiological, and molecular aspects of feline sporotrichosis in Espírito Santo, Brazil, as well as demonstrated the degree of reliability of the cytopathological examination in diagnosis, when compared to fungal culture. From March 2019 to April 2020, 154 suspicious cats were evaluated by collecting data and biological samples. The Cohen's kappa coefficient and the Chi-square independence defined the degree of agreement and the accuracy parameters, respectively. The interobserver agreement was high (Kappa coefficient = 0.96). Sensitivity, specificity, predictive (positive and negative), and accuracy values were 95.0, 97.0, 99.1, 84.2, and 95.5%, respectively. All isolates evaluated were identified as Sporothrix brasiliensis by species-specific PCR. A digital image bank (Padlet) was created with different types of clinical forms and positive slide profiles. We concluded that the cytopathological technique used demonstrated a high degree of reliability. We report an overwhelming occurrence of S. brasiliensis during epizooties in ES.

Fungi are natural degraders of organic matter which can produce enzymes for many industrial and biotechnological applications. In this context, crude enzymatic extracts of fungal isolates were evaluated regarding their hydrolytic and ligninolytic abilities. The fungal strains were isolated from soil samples from Atlantic Rain Forest Park incremented with sugar cane biomass (filter cake), which allowed the selection of efficient lignocellulolytic enzymes. A total of 190 fungi were isolated and evaluated by endocellulase screenings. Thirteen fungi were selected about their hydrolytic and ligninolytic abilities. Among them, three isolates showed xylanolytic activity. Eleven of the isolates were selected by their cellulolytic abilities. Proteolytic enzymes were also detected for three fungi, allowing the classification as metalloprotease and serine protease. The isolates SPZPF3_47 (Mucor sp.), SPZPF1_129 (Byssochlamys nivea) and SPZPF1_141 (Paecilomyces saturatus) were selected for further investigation on their lignin peroxidase abilities. KM, Vmax and kcat apparent for lignin peroxidases were also determined. The strain of Mucor sp. (SPZPF3_47) was highlighted since this fungal genus was not well described about its isolation in the adopted conditions in our study, and showing ligninolytic abilities.

Background: With the ongoing expansion of life-prolonging therapies approved to treat advanced prostate cancer, there is currently an unmet need to better understand real-world treatment patterns and identify optimal treatment sequencing for men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Methods: In this retrospective, observational cohort analysis, patients with confirmed mCRPC were identified in the Auditron claims database and used to describe mCRPC treatment patterns and trends in the Brazilian private healthcare system from 2014 to 2019. Demographics and clinical characteristics, prostate cancer stage at diagnosis, and type and number of treatment lines were evaluated. The primary endpoint was identification of the drugs used in first-line therapies in mCRPC, and the secondary endpoint included a description of sequential lines of therapy (second and third lines) in mCRPC. Results: A total of 168 electronic patient records were reviewed. Docetaxel was the most frequently used first-line treatment (35.7%), followed by abiraterone (33.3%) and enzalutamide (13.1%). Docetaxel, abiraterone, and enzalutamide also accounted for 34.6%, 28.0%, and 15.0%, respectively, of second-line therapies. In third-line therapies, cabazitaxel (26.1%), enzalutamide (23.9%), docetaxel (15.2%), and abiraterone (15.2%) were most commonly prescribed. Irrespective of stage at diagnosis, treatment patterns were similar once the disease progressed to the metastatic castration-resistance stage. Conclusions: Docetaxel was the most frequently utilized therapy for mCRPC treatment, followed by abiraterone and enzalutamide. Although the current analyses provide real-world insights into treatment patterns for patients with mCRPC in Brazil, additional real-world data are needed to further validate and expand on these findings.

PURPOSE: This article shows reports of the clinical-epidemiological characteristics and serological screening in patients assisted by a reference center for PCM care, University Hospital Cassiano Antonio Moraes, Federal University of Espirito Santo, Brazil. METHODS: The patient's sera with PCM were analyzed by DID test at the beginning and the end treatment. Clinical and demographic data were also collected to characterize the sample. RESULTS: One hundred patients with a suspected diagnosis of PCM were evaluated. Serology by DID test was used as a screen in all patients. The test was positive for 79 patients (72 for Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and 7 for Paracoccidioides lutzii). Serology was negative in 21 sera, although all of them were diagnosed PCM by histopathologic or direct exam. Serological follow-up was performed during the treatment of all patients. After treatment, 58(58%) had negative serology and 33(33%) low levels of antibodies (≤ 1:16). CONCLUSION: Our results indicate the importance of the DID test for the screening and monitoring of PCM and that the incidence of P. lutzii might be greater than expected in areas where it is not the predominant PCM species. Therefore, this article may contribute to improving the knowledge and clinical management about this disease.

Sporothrix schenckii and allied species are thermodimorphic fungi widely distributed in nature which causes human and animal sporotrichosis, the most common subcutaneous mycosis globally. Sporotrichosis is acquired after a traumatic inoculation of soil or plant material contaminated with Sporothrix propagules or through bites and scratches from diseased cats. In Ascomycota, the master regulators of sex are MAT genes that lie in a single mating-type locus, in Sporothrix these are determined by two nonhomologous alleles, MAT1-1 and MAT1-2. We assessed the whole-genome sequences of medically relevant Sporothrix to develop a single-tube duplex PCR assay to screen S. brasiliensis, S. schenckii, S. globosa, and S. luriei idiomorphs (MAT1-1 or MAT1-2) and understand the distribution and incidence of mating-type strains from natural populations. Using our duplex PCR assay, a 673 bp amplicon (α-box protein) was consistently amplified from all MAT1-1 isolates, while a 291 bp fragment was only amplified from the isolates harboring MAT1-2 (HMG box). Molecular evidence suggests heterothallism (self-sterility) as the unique mating strategy among the species evaluated. The mating-type identity of 93 isolates revealed a nearly equal distribution (1:1 ratio) of mating type alleles within species but deviating between different outbreak areas. Remarkably, for S. brasiliensis in Rio de Janeiro, we report an overwhelming occurrence of MAT1-2 (1:13 ratio; χ2 = 10.286, P = 0.0013) opposing the high prevalence MAT1-1 in the Rio Grande do Sul (10:1 ratio; χ2 = 7.364, P = 0.0067). Therefore, the population structure of Sporothrix species refers from paucity to regular cycles of sexual recombination in most of the studied regions. Our PCR-based mating-type diagnostic assay is proposed here as an important marker to track the geographical expansion during the long-lasting outbreak of cat-transmitted sporotrichosis driven by S. brasiliensis.
