The primary population of small ruminants in Spain is concentrated in the southern region, a critical area for the country's livestock production. Indirect economic losses can occur when this livestock is affected by gastrointestinal parasites. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of these parasites in small ruminant herds (159 sheep and 39 goats) through coprological analyses and conducted a survey on farmers' management practices related to gastrointestinal parasite control. The survey results revealed some important aspects: monitoring through coprological analyses is not a common practice; veterinarians are not typically involved in deworming plans; anthelmintic treatment in adults is often applied twice a year in sheep and once a year in goats; and finally, drug rotation was higher in sheep farms. Coprological analyses showed Eimeria spp. as the most common parasitic infection, followed by Strongyles infection. Other parasites like Moniezia spp., Trichuris spp., and D. dendriticum were less important, although their prevalence was higher in sheep than goats. This constitutes the first report on the epidemiological status of gastrointestinal parasites in small ruminants in southern Spain. Based on the survey findings, the introduction of certain management measures on farms could potentially mitigate parasite infections.

In experimental procedures inevitably leading to the sacrifice of animals, suitable measures should be taken to minimise their pain and suffering as much as possible, as well as to prevent any modification or masking in the experimental results obtained. An overdose of anaesthetic is the method of euthanasia most employed in fish, since it is effective and easy to apply. Our objectives were to compare the efficacy of eugenol and of tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) as euthanasia agents in zebrafish, and to make a histological evaluation of the possible effects derived from their application. The concentrations established for eugenol were 0.25 and 0.35 mg/mL, and those for MS-222 were 0.25 and 0.50 mg/mL, for both the buffered solution and the non-buffered one. Eugenol turned out to be a stronger euthanasia agent than MS-222 in zebrafish, presenting with significantly shorter euthanasia times. However, the exposure of the fish to euthanasia doses of eugenol triggered branchial alterations, in addition to serious lesions and changes in their nerve tissue. The results obtained with MS-222 also revealed a marked branchial alteration derived from its use. In this respect, the addition of a buffer to the MS-222 solution enhanced the effectiveness of the drug, with significantly shorter euthanasia times being achieved than with the non-buffered solution, and diminished the severity of the lesions described. We therefore determined that the buffered MS-222 solution is the most effective, reliable and safest method of euthanasia for use in research on zebrafish.

Young horses reach nearly 90% of their final height in the first year of life. However, to achieve their genetic potential, it is necessary to receive adequate nutrition during this period of rapid growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation of sorghum silage during a period of limited pasture forage availability, on the body development, and health of Mangalarga Marchador (MM) weanling fillies. Fourteen healthy MM 6-month-old fillies were randomly assigned to one of two groups: GS (consuming silage) and GH (consuming grass hay (Cynodon spp) in addition to 1.5% of body weight (BW) in dry matter (DM) of a fortified corn-based concentrate (17% CP [crude protein]), which was fed in individual stalls divided into two feedings/day for both groups. After concentrate feedings, the experimental groups remained loose in drylot pens of 50 m2, where the assigned forages were fed ad libitum with free access to salt and water. Group feed intake of the forages was recorded. It was assumed they were consuming a forage:concentrate ratio of 50:50. To assess development, the animals were weighed and measured for height at the withers and croup, body length, girth, and cannon bone circumference. The physical condition of animals, including BW, rectal temperature, mucous membrane color, and body condition score were assessed as well as serum biochemical analyses of creatinine, urea, total protein, gamma glutaminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, glucose, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus concentrations were evaluated. The weights, morphometric measurements, clinical evaluation, and blood collections were done on the first day and every 21 days during the 84 days trial period. The growth performance and serum were subjected to analysis of variance for repeated measures, factoring treatment, and collection period. Despite higher (P < .05) DM and CP intakes by the GH fillies than those GS, there were no treatment effects (P > .05) on any of the development or health parameters measured. The use of sorghum silage as forage source for 84 days during the dry season had no negative impact on the body development and health of MM fillies (6-9 months of age) that were also fed 1.5% BW of a commercial concentrate balanced for growth.
