Utilización del láser para la prevención y el tratamiento de la mucositis oral inducida por quimioterapia y radioterapia de cabeza y cuello / Use of laser for the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis induced by radiotherapy and chemotherapy for head and neck cancer

Una de las complicaciones de la radioterapia y la quimioterapia es la mucositis oral. Dado que el láser de baja energía es una de las intervenciones más frecuentemente recomendadas por los autores y las sociedades internacionales, el objetivo de esta revisión bibliográfica es el de revisar la evidencia científica existente sobre el empleo del láser de modo preventivo y terapéutico en la mucositis oral asociada al tratamiento del cáncer. Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica en PubMed y en la biblioteca de The Cochrane Collaboration, limitando la búsqueda a los últimos 20 años. Finalmente se incluyeron 29 artículos, que contenían 30 estudios. La fototerapia con láser de baja energía parece una intervención prometedora tanto en la prevención como en el tratamiento de la mucositis oral asociada al tratamiento del cáncer. Prácticamente todos los estudios revisados encontraron buenos resultados, sin efectos adversos y con reducciones tanto de la incidencia como de la gravedad de la mucositis en todos los tipos de tratamientos del cáncer (AU)

One of the complications of radiotherapy and chemotherapy is oral mucositis. Since the low energy laser is one of the mostfrequently recommended interventions by authors and international societies, the aim of this study is to review the scientific evidence on the use of lasers as a preventive and therapeutic in oral mucositis associated with treatment of cancer. We performed a literature search in PubMed and The cochrane Collaboration Library, limiting the search to the last 20 years. We finally included 29 articles that contained 30 studies. Low energy laser phototherapy seems a promising intervention in both the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis associated with cancer treatment. Virtually all studies reviewed showed good results with no adverse effects and reductions in both incidence and severity of mucositis in all types of cancer treatments (AU)

Papel de los antioxidantes en la promoción de la salud oral / Role of antioxidants in the promotion of oral health

Actualmente, existen suficientes investigaciones que sostienen que incorporar a la dieta ciertos alimentos ricos en antioxidantes, tiene un efecto beneficioso en la salud en general. Una dieta equilibrada disminuye el riesgo de patologías tales como las enfermedades cardiovasculares, cáncer y diabetes, entre otras. También el papel de los antioxidantes en la salud oral, es objeto de estudio en este momento. Se buscan beneficios y aplicaciones en la prevención y tratamiento de patologías orales, que de ser demostrados podrían suponer en el futuro un cambio en el manejo de estas patologías. Se ha realizado una revisión de la literatura para determinar si existe suficiente evidencia científica que avale la presencia de propiedades preventivas y terapéuticas de los antioxidantes en la salud oral. Para ello, se han consultado las bases de datos PubMed/Medline y Cochrane con las palabras clave: antioxidants, oral health, oral cancer, nutrition, quimioprevention, leukoplakia, lycopene (AU)

Nowadays, it is proved that incorporating food which is rich in antioxidants has beneficial effects to health. A balanced diet decreases the risk of suffering pathologies as heart disease, cancer and diabetes among others. In addition, the role of antioxidants in oral health is currently understudy. The aim of this paper is to find benefits and applications in the prevention and treatment of oral pathologies. If this was proved it could mean a future change in these pathologies management. A review of the scientific evidence todeterminate whether antioxidants have preventive and therapeutic properties in oral health hasbeen done, using the data bases PubMed/Medline, Cochrane with the following key words:antioxidants, oral health, oral cancer, nutrition, quimioprevention, leukoplakia, lycopene (AU)
