OBJECTIVE: To explore the needs, motivations, and limitations related to healthy eating and digital materials, as well as to identify patterns for their design as a strategy aimed at Mexican families. DESIGN: A qualitative observational study of the phenomenon through focus group sessions. LOCATION: A public primary education center in the city of Querétaro, Mexico. PARTICIPANTS: Children aged 9 to 11 years and parents, mothers, or caregivers with children in primary education. METHOD: Twelve sessions were conducted with three groups of students and two sessions with parents, mothers, or caregivers using an interview guide. Various digital materials, developed based on social cognitive theory, were presented during the sessions. The sessions were recorded with the participants' or their guardians' prior consent and transcribed for analysis. Coding was performed for key points of analysis, and information saturation was confirmed. RESULTS: Students expressed motivation towards digital material that promotes play and experimentation, especially within the family context. The main perceived barrier was the caregivers' resistance to change. Parents expressed motivation and a need for explanatory material on diseases, with economic and time-related barriers. CONCLUSIONS: Digital material based on social cognitive theory, designed to improve nutrition, can be an effective strategy in nutritional education if it considers the circumstances of the target population. It is advisable to include affective and behavioral elements to achieve meaningful learning within households.

Objectives: The chimeras causing the CAH-X syndrome (SCAH-X) result from recombination between CYP21A2-TNXB and their respective pseudogenes (CYP21A1P-TNXA). The clinical manifestations of this syndrome include congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). Since SCAH-X has been recently described, the number of publications available is limited. The objective of this study was to set up a molecular approach and a screening algorithm for detecting CAH-X chimeras, determine their frequency and distribution in the Spanish population, and assess their clinical pattern of occurrence in a group of patients. Methods: A total of 186 patients were eligible for CAH-X molecular genetic testing. Testing included MLPA, heterodimer detection by capillary gel electrophoresis, and sequencing of exons 40, 41, and 43 of TNXB. A review was performed of the medical history of 20 patients from three hospitals of reference and the signs and symptoms of EDS they exhibited. Results: In total, 78 CAH patients were carriers of CAH-X chimeras (41.9 %). Forty-six patients were carriers of CH1 (24.7 %), 24 of CH2 (12.9 %), and 8 of CH3 (4.3 %), with a heterogeneous geographical distribution. Seven (35 %) of the 20 carriers of a CAH-X chimera who underwent clinical examination experienced clinical manifestations of EDS. Conclusions: The impact of SCAH-X in the Spanish population was assessed by genetic testing. In the light of the clinical pattern of occurrence and significant prevalence of SCAH-X in the Spanish population, early diagnosis of this entity is essential for an appropriate follow-up of clinical manifestations.

PURPOSE: Caregivers must cope with a poor sleep environment when caring for someone admitted to the hospital. The aim was to study the environmental factors associated with a sleep disruption pattern in caregivers during hospitalization and to test their association with caregivers' insomnia symptoms. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study. METHODS: One hundred twenty-three caregivers completed the study. The effect of environmental stimuli on sleep disruption was measured on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 = no disruption, 10 = significant disruption). Type of room (single vs shared), insomnia symptoms, anxiety and depression, and patients' dependence (Barthel Index) were assessed as well. Caregiver and patient characteristics as well as identified hospital disruptors were compared with Student t test, χ2 test, and Fisher exact test according to the caregivers' type of room. A linear regression model using main caregiver and patient sociodemographic variables, questionnaires, and the sum of all hospital disruptors determined the factors associated with caregivers' insomnia symptoms. RESULTS: Of the caregivers and their care recipients, 51.2% shared a room with 1 to 2 other patients. Higher self-reported levels of sleep disruption due to environmental stimuli were found in shared rooms when compared with single rooms (eg, nursing care, noise, and light) (P < .05). Hospital sleep disruptors (adjusted regression coefficient, 0.15; 95% confidence interval, 0.06-0.24) and caregiver anxiety (adjusted regression coefficient, 0.57; 95% confidence interval, 0.33-0.81) were predictors for insomnia (P < .01). However, caregivers' type of room was not associated with insomnia severity symptoms (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS: Interventions are urgent to implement, such as relieving caregivers from patient needs during the night, providing them with single rooms, and conducting multiple nursing tasks in 1 visit to minimize night hospital noise.

Spirulina maxima is a cyanobacterium considered a "superfood" due to its metabolites and nutrient content. These include a complex mixture of minerals, vitamins, fatty acids, proteins, and accessory pigments. In recent years, it has positioned itself as a promising source of bioactive molecules for the treatment of several diseases, including metabolic syndrome, coronary diseases, cancer, and the improvement of health modulating oxidative stress. C-Phycocyanin (C-PC) is a photosynthetic pigment from green-blue cyanobacterium and the most abundant phycobiliprotein in the Spirulina genus with various pharmacological properties attributed due to its antioxidant capacity but has no specific cellular target. This has made it a molecule of great interest in biomedical research. This review focuses on the pharmacological effects and the benefits on metabolic syndrome and oxidative stress of C-PC.

Caregivers experience high levels of emotional stress and must cope with several clinical and hospital-related environmental factors that seriously impact their night's rest. The purpose of this study was to establish the prevalence of insomnia symptoms in a sample of caregivers of adult hospitalized patients and to examine the relationships between insomnia symptoms and patient and caregiver-associated factors. A total of 152 caregivers were enrolled from the two main hospitals in Granada, Spain. Sociodemographic, economic, and care-related data were collected. Insomnia symptoms, burden, anxiety and depression, social support, and resilience were assessed. Information on patients' hospital admission, dependence, and neuropsychiatric symptoms was also obtained. Most caregivers were middle-aged women caring for their spouses. Self-reported insomnia prevalence was set at 45.4%. Comparison analyses between caregivers suffering from insomnia symptoms and non-insomniacs showed significantly higher burden, anxiety and depression and patients' neuropsychiatric symptoms (p < 0.05) and lower resilience and social support in the former (p < 0.01). A regression analysis showed that anxiety (ORa = 1.15; p < 0.05) and higher caregiver education level (ORa = 5.50; p < 0.05) were factors significantly associated with insomnia symptoms. Patients' neuropsychiatric symptoms showed a trend toward statistical significance as well (ORa = 1.09; p = 0.06). There is an acute need to address, prevent and treat insomnia problems in caregivers.

The taxonomy of the subfamily Linoideae at the intergeneric and section levels has been questioned throughout the years, and the evolution of floral characters remains poorly understood. In particular, the evolution of flower color is still uncertain, despite its ecological importance and being one of the most variable and striking traits in Angiospermae. We evaluated the phylogenetic relationships of the genera and sections and used the phylogeny to reconstruct the ancestral state of flower color. The results suggest reevaluating the taxonomic status of segregated genera and re-incorporating them into Linum. Four of the five sections currently accepted were recovered as monophyletic (Cathartolinum, Dasylinum, Linum, and Syllinum). We propose accepting the section Stellerolinon and reevaluating Linopsis, whose representatives were recovered in three separate clades. The ancestral flower color for Linoideae was yellow-white. The flower colors purple and yellow-white were recovered at the deepest nodes of the two main clades. Pink, blue, and red colors were the most recent to evolve. These results appear to be related to diversification events, biogeographical history, and ecological aspects of the subfamily. Our reconstruction constitutes the first plausible scenario that explores the evolution of flower color, leading to new testable hypotheses for future research on the flax group.

People's health is closely linked to their diet. Diet can be defined as the set of foods that are consumed in a day, and it is susceptible to being altered by various factors, such as physiological, environmental, psychological, and social. These, in turn, can be affected by an inadequate diet and/or a dysregulation of emotions. Emotions are an immediate response by the organism informing it of the degree of favorability of a certain stimulus or situation. Moods are similar to emotions but more intense and prolonged. Some studies indicate that the consumption of hyperpalatable energy-dense foods may be related to emotional eating. Emotional eating is characterized by the excessive consumption of hyperpalatable energy-dense foods, rich in sugars and fats, in response to negative emotions. But several reports also indicate that emotional eating may be associated with the presence of positive emotions, so further analysis of the available information is necessary. Consuming higher amounts of hyperpalatable energy-dense foods can lead to the accumulation of energy in the body that results in an increase in body weight, as well as other associated diseases. Obesity is the world's leading diet-related health problem. The objective of this work was to carry out a systematic review of the available literature using the Cochrane methodology, in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, to evaluate the relationship between emotional eating, the consumption of hyperpalatable energy-dense foods, and indicators of nutritional status. An exhaustive search in different databases yielded 9431 scientific articles, 45 of which met the inclusion criteria. This review underscores the fact that knowing and understanding the reasons why people consume hyperpalatable energy-dense foods and the possible connection with their emotional eating can provide key data for improving and personalizing patients' nutritional treatment. This in turn can encourage compliance with treatment plans to improve people's health and quality of life using an interdisciplinary approach.

Mammalian pupils respond to light1,2 and dilate with arousal, attention, cognitive workload, and emotions,3 thus reflecting the state of the brain. Pupil size also varies during sleep, constricting during deep non-REM sleep4-7 and dilating slightly during REM sleep.4-6 Anecdotal reports suggest that, unlike mammals, birds constrict their pupils during aroused states, such as courtship and aggression,8-10 raising the possibility that pupillary behavior also differs between mammals and birds during sleep. Here, we measured pupil size in awake pigeons and used their translucent eyelid to investigate sleep-state-dependent changes in pupil size. Male pigeons constricted their pupils during courtship and other male-female interactions but not while engaging in other waking behaviors. Unlike mouse pupils, the pigeons' pupils were dilated during non-REM sleep, while over 1,000 bursts of constriction and relaxation, which we call rapid iris movements (RIMs), occurred primarily during REM sleep. Consistent with the avian iris being composed largely of striated muscles,11-15 rather than smooth muscles, as in mammals, pharmacological experiments revealed that RIMs are mediated by nicotinic cholinergic receptors in the iris muscles. Despite receiving input from a parasympathetic nucleus, but consistent with its striated nature, the avian iris sphincter muscle behaves like skeletal muscles controlled by the somatic nervous system, constricting during courtship displays, relaxing during non-REM sleep, and twitching during REM sleep. We speculate that during wakefulness, pupillary constrictions are involved in social communication, whereas RIMs occurring during REM sleep might maintain the efficacy of this motor system and/or reflect the processing of associated memories.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) negatively affect the quality of life (QoL) of people with diabetes. The Cardiff Wound Impact Schedule (CWIS) questionnaire has been designed to measure the QoL of people with chronic foot wounds. However, no studies have been specifically designed to validate this instrument in a Spanish population. In this prospective study, a total of 141 subjects with DFU were recruited. DFU was determined by performing physical examinations. Medical records were exhaustively reviewed to collect clinical variables. The CWIS was transculturally adapted by a group of experts and a group of patients with DFU. The SF-36 and EQ-5D generic instruments were used as reference tools. The questionnaires were administered at 7 days and 4, 12, and 26 weeks after the baseline assessment by personal interview with each of the study subjects. The psychometric properties of the instrument were assessed using statistical methods. The content validity had an average of 3.63 (90.7% of the maximum score of 4). The internal consistency of the CWIS subscales had a standardized Cronbach's alpha range from 0.715 to 0.797. The reproducibility was moderate with an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) range from 0.606 to 0.868. Significant correlations between CWIS domains and SF-36 and EQ-5D subscales were observed, demonstrating a good criterion validity of the CWIS questionnaire (p < 0.001). However, the construct validity of the CWIS was not validated with a comparative fit index (CFI) of 0.69, a root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) of 0.09, and a standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) of 0.10. The sensitivity to changes over time was optimal in the three domains (i.e., social life, well-being, and physical symptoms) (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the Spanish version of the CWIS shows acceptable psychometric properties to assess the QoL of subjects with DFU, except for its construct validity.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is a paradoxical state of wake-like brain activity occurring after non-REM (NREM) sleep in mammals and birds. In mammals, brain cooling during NREM sleep is followed by warming during REM sleep, potentially preparing the brain to perform adaptively upon awakening. If brain warming is the primary function of REM sleep, then it should occur in other animals with similar states. We measured cortical temperature in pigeons and bearded dragons, lizards that exhibit NREM-like sleep and REM-like sleep with brain activity resembling wakefulness. In pigeons, cortical temperature decreased during NREM sleep and increased during REM sleep. However, brain temperature did not increase when dragons switched from NREM-like to REM-like sleep. Our findings indicate that brain warming is not a universal outcome of sleep states characterized by wake-like activity, challenging the hypothesis that their primary function is to warm the brain in preparation for wakefulness.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a chronic complication that negatively affects the quality of life (QoL) of diabetic patients. In Spain, there is no specifically designed and validated instrument to assess the QoL of patients with DFU. Our aim was to adapt the Diabetic Foot Ulcer Scale-Short Form (DFS-SF) questionnaire to a Spanish population and validate it. A prospective, observational design was used. The DFS-SF was administered by personal interview. The validated SF-36 and EQ-5D generic instruments were used as reference tools. The reliability, validity, and sensitivity to changes were assessed using standard statistical methods. A sample of 141 patients with DFU was recruited. The content validity was 3.46 on average (maximum score of 4). The internal consistency of the DFS-SF subscales showed a standardized Cronbach's α range between 0.720 and 0.948. The DFS-SF domains showed excellent reproducibility measures (intraclass correlation coefficient from 0.77-0.92). The criterion validity was good with significant correlations between each DFS-SF subscale and its corresponding SF-36 and EQ-5D subscales (p < 0.001). However, the questionnaire structure was not validated (comparative fit index = 0.844, root mean square error of approximation = 0.095, and standardized root mean square residual = 0.093). The instrument showed high sensitivity to ulcer changes over time (p < 0.001). The adapted and validated Spanish version of the DFS-SF questionnaire has good psychometric properties and shows good sensitivity to ulcer changes, although the construct validity was not optimal. The adapted questionnaire will be a useful tool specifically to assess the QoL in subjects with diabetic foot ulcers in the clinical and research settings in Spain.

BACKGROUND: Current recommendations for treating obesity in adolescence include a comprehensive approach (nutritional, behavioral, and exercise). Calcarea carbonica ostrearum (CCO) is a homeopathic medicine usually prescribed in obese individuals, but its effects on weight and body fat are not completely known. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study will be to evaluate the efficacy of homeopathic CCO, in addition to a multidisciplinary intervention (diet, motivational support, and exercise program), on body fat and weight in obese adolescents. METHODS/DESIGN: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group, superiority trial with 3-month study duration will be undertaken. The study will be conducted in a public research hospital in Mexico City, Hospital Juárez de México, in the outpatient services of homeopathy and sports medicine. Eighty non-diabetic adolescents, 12 to 19 years old, who are overweight or obese, will be included. The primary outcome: change in body fat percentage at week 12. The secondary outcomes: change in mean total weight, total body mass index, fat mass index, waist-hip ratio, lean muscle mass, fasting glucose, insulin, insulin resistance, lipid profile, score of Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale Revised (CESD-R) and score of Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) at week 12. Efficacy data will be analyzed in the intention-to-treat sample. To determine the difference in the outcomes between groups at baseline and week 12, data will be analyzed using Student's t-test. DISCUSSION: This is the first randomized controlled trial aimed to determine the fat-reducing efficacy in obese adolescents of a homeopathic medicine, CCO, given in addition to a multidisciplinary intervention, compared with placebo plus the same intervention. It is an attempt to support scientific evidence in homeopathy for one of the most common chronic diseases, which causes high mortality due to its complications. CLINICALTRIALS. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the efficacy of massage therapy and kinesitherapy on the anthropometric development of hospitalized preterm infants applied by parents. DESIGN AND METHODS: A prospective quasi-experimental study was designed. Hospitalized preterm infants received a daily 15-minute session of massage therapy and kinesitherapy. The control group received regular medical and nursing care. RESULTS: The massage therapy and kinesitherapy protocol significantly improved the anthropometric parameters studied: weight (895.7 ±â€¯547.9 vs 541.8 ±â€¯536.2; p < 0.001) size (5.5 ±â€¯4.3 vs. 3.0 ±â€¯3.1; p < 0.001) and head circumference (4.2 ±â€¯3.2 vs 2.4 ±â€¯2.6; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of a massage therapy and kinesitherapy protocol is beneficial for the anthropometric development of hospitalized preterm infants. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: An easy to administer and cost-effective intervention such as massage therapy and kinesitherapy can improve the anthropometric development of preterm infants and reduce growth-related morbidity in the short, medium, and long term.

Propagating slow-waves in electroencephalogram (EEG) or local field potential (LFP) recordings occur during non-rapid eye-movement (NREM) sleep in both mammals and birds. Moreover, in both, input from the thalamus is thought to contribute to the genesis of NREM sleep slow-waves. Interestingly, the general features of slow-waves are also found under isoflurane anesthesia. However, it is unclear to what extent these slow-waves reflect the same processes as those giving rise to NREM sleep slow-waves. Similar slow-wave spatio-temporal properties during NREM sleep and isoflurane anesthesia would suggest that both types of slow-waves are based on related processes. We used a 32-channel silicon probe connected to a transmitter to make intra-cortical recordings of the visual hyperpallium in naturally sleeping and isoflurane anesthetized pigeons (Columba livia) using a within-bird design. Under anesthesia, the amplitude of LFP slow-waves was higher when compared to NREM sleep. Spectral power density across all frequencies (1.5-100 Hz) was also elevated. In addition, slow-wave coherence between electrode sites was higher under anesthesia, indicating higher synchrony when compared to NREM sleep. Nonetheless, the spatial distribution of slow-waves under anesthesia was more comparable to NREM sleep than to wake or REM sleep. Similar to NREM sleep, slow-wave propagation under anesthesia mainly occurred in the thalamic input layers of the hyperpallium, regions which also showed the greatest slow-wave power during both recording conditions. This suggests that the thalamus could be involved in the genesis of slow-waves under both conditions. Taken together, although slow-waves under isoflurane anesthesia are stronger, they share spatio-temporal activity characteristics with slow-waves during NREM sleep.

Several mammalian-based theories propose that the varying patterns of neuronal activity occurring in wakefulness and sleep reflect different modes of information processing. Neocortical slow-waves, hippocampal sharp-wave ripples, and thalamocortical spindles occurring during mammalian non-rapid eye-movement (NREM) sleep are proposed to play a role in systems-level memory consolidation. Birds show similar NREM and REM (rapid eye-movement) sleep stages to mammals; however, it is unclear whether all neurophysiological rhythms implicated in mammalian memory consolidation are also present. Moreover, it is unknown whether the propagation of slow-waves described in the mammalian neocortex occurs in the avian "cortex" during natural NREM sleep. We used a 32-channel silicon probe connected to a transmitter to make intracerebral recordings of the visual hyperpallium and thalamus in naturally sleeping pigeons (Columba livia). As in the mammalian neocortex, slow-waves during NREM sleep propagated through the hyperpallium. Propagation primarily occurred in the thalamic input layers of the hyperpallium, regions that also showed the greatest slow-wave activity (SWA). Spindles were not detected in both the visual hyperpallium, including regions receiving thalamic input, and thalamus, using a recording method that readily detects spindles in mammals. Interestingly, during REM sleep fast gamma bursts in the hyperpallium (when present) were restricted to the thalamic input layers. In addition, unlike mice, the decrease in SWA from NREM to REM sleep was the greatest in these layers. Taken together, these variant and invariant neurophysiological aspects of avian and mammalian sleep suggest that there may be associated mechanistic and functional similarities and differences between avian and mammalian sleep.

The present study was undertaken because no previous developmental studies exist on MCH neurons in any avian species. After validating a commercially-available antibody for use in chickens, immunohistochemical examinations first detected MCH neurons around embryonic day (E) 8 in the posterior hypothalamus. This population increased thereafter, reaching a numerical maximum by E20. MCH-positive cell bodies were found only in the posterior hypothalamus at all ages examined, restricted to a region showing very little overlap with the locations of hypocretin/orexin (H/O) neurons. Chickens had fewer MCH than H/O neurons, and MCH neurons also first appeared later in development than H/O neurons (the opposite of what has been found in rodents). MCH neurons appeared to originate from territories within the hypothalamic periventricular organ that partially overlap with the source of diencephalic serotonergic neurons. Chicken MCH fibers developed exuberantly during the second half of embryonic development, and they became abundant in the same brain areas as in rodents, including the hypothalamus (by E12), locus coeruleus (by E12), dorsal raphe nucleus (by E20) and septum (by E20). These observations suggest that MCH cells may play different roles during development in chickens and rodents; but once they have developed, MCH neurons exhibit similar phenotypes in birds and rodents.

BACKGROUND: In this cross-sectional study, we assessed the possible association of vitamin D deficiency with self-reported treatment satisfaction and health-related quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: We performed a sub-analysis of a previous study and included a total of 292 type 2 diabetic patients. We evaluated treatment satisfaction and health-related quality of life through specific tools: the Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire and the Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as 25 (OH) D serum levels < 15 ng/mL. RESULTS: Multivariable linear regression models were used to estimate the relationship of vitamin D deficiency with both outcomes once adjusted for self-reported patient characteristics. Vitamin D deficiency was significantly associated with the final score of the Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire and the single "diabetes-specific quality of life" dimension of the Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life (p = 0.0198 and p = 0.0070, respectively). However, lower concentrations of 25-OH vitamin D were not associated with the overall quality of life score or the perceived frequency of hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia. CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows the association between vitamin D deficiency and both the self-reported diabetes treatment satisfaction and the diabetes-specific quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Introducción: la alta incidencia de apendicitis aguda, la falta de predictores seguros en su diagnóstico y el hecho comprobado que en los cuerpos de guardia hospitalarios no se mide de manera rutinaria la presencia de cuerpos cetónicos en la orina de los pacientes, hacen necesario verificar las escasas evidencias existentes acerca de la cetonuria como predictor. Objetivo: determinar la posible fiabilidad de la cetonuria en el diagnóstico de la apendicitis aguda. Método: se realizó un estudio descriptivo y prospectivo, en el Servicio de Cirugía General del Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Provincial Celia Sánchez Manduley de Manzanillo, provincia Granma, desde diciembre de 2014 hasta abril de 2015. El universo estuvo compuesto por 362 pacientes diagnosticados de apendicitis aguda. Se analizó la orina de cada paciente, mediante tiras reactivas y la reacción de Imbert, para identificar cuerpos cetónicos. Se confeccionó una ficha contentiva de las posibles causas de cetonuria, que se cuantificaron con la prueba de diferencia de proporciones. Los resultados se presentaron en tablas y gráficos. Resultados: de los pacientes diagnosticados con apendicitis aguda, 21 por ciento presentaron cetonuria. No se identificaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre la detección de cetonuria mediante tiras reactivas y la reacción de Imbert: ambas pruebas mostraron especificidad de 90 por ciento y bajas sensibilidad (21 por ciento) y efectividad (37 por ciento). En la mayoría de los casos fue posible atribuir la presencia de cuerpos cetónicos a causas conocidas.Conclusiones: se sugiere que la cetonuria no es un elemento predictor fiable en el diagnóstico de apendicitis aguda(AU)


Introduction: the high prevalence of acute appendicitis, the lack of reliable predictors of this disease and the fact that in the bodies ward of hospital is not routinely measured the presence of ketone bodies in the urine of patients, it is necessary to verify the little evidence available about ketosis as a predictor of acute appendicitis. Objective: to determine the possible reliability of ketonuria in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Method: a quantitative, prospective, observational and descriptive study with analytical phases was performed at the General Surgery Service of the Celia Sánchez Manduley Provincial Surgical Clinic Hospital in Manzanillo, Granma, from December 2014 to April 2015.The universe consisted of 362 patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis. Each patient's urine was analyzed by means of test strips and the Imbert reaction to identify ketone bodies. A tabulation of the possible ketosis causes was carried out, which were quantified with the difference test of proportions. The results were presented in tables and graphs.Results: taking into account all the patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis, 21 percent presented ketosis. No statistically significant differences were found between the detection of ketosis by test strips and the reaction of Imbert: both tests showed specificity of 90 percent and low sensitivity (21 percent) and effectiveness (37 percent); in most cases it was possible to attribute the presence of ketone bodies to known causes.Conclusions: it is suggested that ketonuria is not a reliable predictor in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis(AU)
