RESUMO

Mixed anion halide-chalcogenide materials have recently attracted attention for a variety of applications, owing to their desirable optoelectronic properties. We report the synthesis of a previously unreported mixed-metal chalcohalide material, CuBiSeCl2 (Pnma), accessed through a simple, low-temperature solid-state route. The physical structure is characterized through single-crystal X-ray diffraction and reveals significant Cu displacement within the CuSe2Cl4 octahedra. The electronic structure of CuBiSeCl2 is investigated computationally, which indicates highly anisotropic charge carrier effective masses, and by experimental verification using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which reveals a valence band dominated by Cu orbitals. The band gap is measured to be 1.33(2) eV, a suitable value for solar absorption applications. The electronic and thermal properties, including resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity, are also measured, and it is found that CuBiSeCl2 exhibits a low room temperature thermal conductivity of 0.27(4) W K-1 m-1, realized through modifications to the phonon landscape through increased bonding anisotropy.

In January 2022, as the COVID pandemic reached remote communities in Central Australia, The Northern Territory Health Central Australian Regional Health Service and the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) executed 'COVID on Country', a program designed to triage cases and to implement treatment and clinical review of individuals in their community without the need to be relocated to larger centres for safe provision of care. The program assessed patient factors and community/capacity factors to triage and enact pathways. Remote living people who qualified for the program or who declined aeromedical retrieval, were provided with comprehensive clinical support, including administration of intravenous sotrovimab by daily scheduled visits to all affected communities by a doctor transported on an RFDS plane. Evaluation of the program demonstrated that it was a safe and effective way to provide complex care in a culturally safe manner.

High throughput screening (HTS) interrogates compound libraries to find those that are "active" in an assay. To better understand compound behavior in HTS, we assessed an existing binomial survivor function (BSF) model of "frequent hitters" using 872 publicly available HTS data sets. We found large numbers of "infrequent hitters" using this model leading us to reject the BSF for identifying "frequent hitters." As alternatives, we investigated generalized logistic, gamma, and negative binomial distributions as models for compound behavior. The gamma model reduced the proportion of both frequent and infrequent hitters relative to the BSF. Within this data set, conclusions about individual compound behavior were limited by the number of times individual compounds were tested (1-1613 times) and disproportionate testing of some compounds. Specifically, most tests (78%) were on a 309,847-compound subset (17.6% of compounds) each tested ≥ 300 times. We concluded that the disproportionate retesting of some compounds represents compound repurposing at scale rather than drug discovery. The approach to drug discovery represented by these 872 data sets characterizes the assays well by challenging them with many compounds while each compound is characterized poorly with a single assay. Aggregating the testing information from each compound across the multiple screens yielded a continuum with no clear boundary between normal and frequent hitting compounds.

A prospective observational study of 96 patients undergoing insertion of the MONARC transobturator tape (American Medical Systems, Minnetanka, USA) for treatment of urodynamic stress incontinence was conducted to investigate its' the safety and efficacy. Although there were no major intraoperative complications, sling protrusion was observed in 11/91 patients (12.1%) at early follow up visits. At these visits, 80 women (87.9%) were either completely or substantially continent and 74 women (81.3%) were satisfied with the operation. Objectively, 74 women (81.3%) were cured on urodynamic assessment and only one woman (1.1%) was found to have voiding dysfunction. As a conclusion, it would appear that this new technique is effective for the treatment of stress incontinence; but further studies are needed to investigate its long-term results and complications.
