RESUMO

The control of the in-plane domain evolution in ferroelectric thin films is not only critical to understanding ferroelectric phenomena but also to enabling functional device fabrication. However, in-plane polarized ferroelectric thin films typically exhibit complicated multi-domain states, not desirable for optoelectronic device performance. Here we report a strategy combining interfacial symmetry engineering and anisotropic strain to design single-domain, in-plane polarized ferroelectric BaTiO3 thin films. Theoretical calculations predict the key role of the BaTiO3/PrScO3 [Formula: see text] substrate interfacial environment, where anisotropic strain, monoclinic distortions, and interfacial electrostatic potential stabilize a single-variant spontaneous polarization. A combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, ferroelectric hysteresis loop measurements, and second harmonic generation measurements directly reveals the stabilization of the in-plane quasi-single-domain polarization state. This work offers design principles for engineering in-plane domains of ferroelectric oxide thin films, which is a prerequisite for high performance optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

Spin-valley locking in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides has attracted enormous interest, since it offers potential for valleytronic and optoelectronic applications. Such an exotic electronic state has sparsely been seen in bulk materials. Here, we report spin-valley locking in a Dirac semimetal BaMnSb2. This is revealed by comprehensive studies using first principles calculations, tight-binding and effective model analyses, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Moreover, this material also exhibits a stacked quantum Hall effect (QHE). The spin-valley degeneracy extracted from the QHE is close to 2. This result, together with the Landau level spin splitting, further confirms the spin-valley locking picture. In the extreme quantum limit, we also observed a plateau in the z-axis resistance, suggestive of a two-dimensional chiral surface state present in the quantum Hall state. These findings establish BaMnSb2 as a rare platform for exploring coupled spin and valley physics in bulk single crystals and accessing 3D interacting topological states.

RESUMO

Nearly a fourth of all enzymatic activities is attributable to oxidoreductases, and the redox reactions supported by this vast catalytic repertoire sustain cellular metabolism. In many biological processes, reduction depends on hydride transfer from either reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) or its phosphorylated derivative (NADPH). Despite longstanding efforts to regenerate NADPH by various methods and harness it to support chemoenzymatic synthesis strategies, the lack of product purity has been a major deterrent. Here, we demonstrate that a nanostructured heterolayer Ni-Cu2O-Cu cathode formed by a photoelectrochemical process has unexpected efficiency in direct electrochemical regeneration of NADPH from NADP+. Remarkably, two-thirds of NADP+ was converted to NADPH with no measurable production of the inactive (NADP)2 dimer and at the lowest reported overpotential [- 0.75 V versus Ag/AgCl (3 M NaCl) reference]. Sputtering of nickel on the copper-oxide electrode nucleated an unexpected surface morphology that was critical for high product selectivity. Our results should motivate design of integrated electrolyzer platforms that deploy this heterogeneous catalyst for direct electrochemical regeneration of NADH/NADPH, which is central to design of next-generation biofuel fermentation strategies, biological solar converters, energy-storage devices, and artificial photosynthesis.

RESUMO

Stimulation with ultrafast light pulses can realize and manipulate states of matter with emergent structural, electronic and magnetic phenomena. However, these non-equilibrium phases are often transient and the challenge is to stabilize them as persistent states. Here, we show that atomic-scale PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices, counterpoising strain and polarization states in alternate layers, are converted by sub-picosecond optical pulses to a supercrystal phase. This phase persists indefinitely under ambient conditions, has not been created via equilibrium routes, and can be erased by heating. X-ray scattering and microscopy show this unusual phase consists of a coherent three-dimensional structure with polar, strain and charge-ordering periodicities of up to 30 nm. By adjusting only dielectric properties, the phase-field model describes this emergent phase as a photo-induced charge-stabilized supercrystal formed from a two-phase equilibrium state. Our results demonstrate opportunities for light-activated pathways to thermally inaccessible and emergent metastable states.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Arteriovenous (AV) fistula surgery is commonly performed for AV access for hemodialysis. However the ideal anaesthetic technique of choice remains debated. We aimed to assess operative conditions, vascular patency, and complication rate following AV fistula surgery with isolated brachial plexus block among end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. METHODS: This prospective, observational study included 214 patients undergoing AV fistula surgery under isolated supraclavicular brachial plexus block between January and December 2017. The diameters of the vessels both before and after the block, and the patency of the AV fistula in the immediate postoperative period and after 3 months were assessed using ultrasound Doppler. The change in the vessel diameter both before and after block was compared using independent sample t-test. RESULTS: The mean brachial artery diameter increased by 0.09 mm (P = 0.002), and cephalic vein diameter at elbow, radial artery, and cephalic vein at wrist diameters increased by 0.5 mm (P < 0.001), 0.08 mm (P = 0.031), and 0.48 mm (P < 0.001), respectively. Overall, 93.45% had immediate patency, 85.51% had primary, and 47.19% had functional patency at 3 months. In the brachiocephalic group, 96.24% had immediate patency, 87.21% had primary, and 27.06% had functional patency at 3 months. Among the radiocephalic group, 91.35% had immediate patency, 82.71% had primary patency, and 71.60% had functional patency at 3 months. CONCLUSION: Ultrasound-guided isolated brachial plexus block results in good vasodilation and achieves good immediate and long-term patency in AV fistula surgery.

RESUMO

Gauss's law dictates that the net electric field inside a conductor in electrostatic equilibrium is zero by effective charge screening; free carriers within a metal eliminate internal dipoles that may arise owing to asymmetric charge distributions. Quantum physics supports this view, demonstrating that delocalized electrons make a static macroscopic polarization, an ill-defined quantity in metals--it is exceedingly unusual to find a polar metal that exhibits long-range ordered dipoles owing to cooperative atomic displacements aligned from dipolar interactions as in insulating phases. Here we describe the quantum mechanical design and experimental realization of room-temperature polar metals in thin-film ANiO3 perovskite nickelates using a strategy based on atomic-scale control of inversion-preserving (centric) displacements. We predict with ab initio calculations that cooperative polar A cation displacements are geometrically stabilized with a non-equilibrium amplitude and tilt pattern of the corner-connected NiO6 octahedral--the structural signatures of perovskites--owing to geometric constraints imposed by the underlying substrate. Heteroepitaxial thin-films grown on LaAlO3 (111) substrates fulfil the design principles. We achieve both a conducting polar monoclinic oxide that is inaccessible in compositionally identical films grown on (001) substrates, and observe a hidden, previously unreported, non-equilibrium structure in thin-film geometries. We expect that the geometric stabilization approach will provide novel avenues for realizing new multifunctional materials with unusual coexisting properties.

RESUMO

Phimosis of the foreskin after radiotherapy for rectal carcinoma is extremely rare and has previously been described only once (2006) in the English-language literature. Combination chemo/radiotherapy is currently the treatment of choice and widely used in the management of various pelvic malignancies. In this report, we describe a rare complication on male genitalia following the radiotherapy for lower rectal cancers. Few days following the completion of radiotherapy, patient developed phimosis of the foreskin, which was successfully treated medically without the need for circumcision. Radiotherapy can bring a great risk of injury to anorectum and its adjacent structures. Risk of phimosis should be considered under the current radiation guidelines and we support the concept of using penile shielding for all radiotherapy procedures in colorectal carcinoma patients.

RESUMO

The proof-of-concept of an infrared imaging tip by an array of infrared waveguides tapered as small as 2 µm is demonstrated. The fabrication is based on a high-pressure chemical fluid deposition technique to deposit precisely defined periodic arrays of Ge and Si waveguides within a microstructured optical fiber template made of silica to demonstrate the proposed concept at wavelengths of 10.64 µm and 1.55 µm, respectively. The essential features of the imaging system such as isolation between adjacent pixels, magnification, optical throughput, and image transfer characteristics are investigated. Near-field scanning at 3.39 µm wavelength using a single tapered Ge core is also demonstrated.

RESUMO

A new orthorhombic phase of the multiferroic BiFeO3 has been created via strain engineering by growing it on a NdScO(3)(110)(o) substrate. The tensile-strained orthorhombic BiFeO3 phase is ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic at room temperature. A combination of nonlinear optical second harmonic generation and piezoresponse force microscopy revealed that the ferroelectric polarization in the orthorhombic phase is along the in-plane {110}(pc) directions. In addition, the corresponding rotation of the antiferromagnetic axis in this new phase was observed using x-ray linear dichroism.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Polymorphisms of the VEGF gene are known to affect the biological behaviour of cancers but have seldom been studied in thyroid cancer. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the prevalence and relevance of VEGF-A polymorphisms and mRNA expression in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Genomic DNA and total RNA were isolated from paraffin-embedded tissue from 91 PTC (51 conventional PTC and 40 follicular variant) and 78 control thyroid tissues. Three DNA polymorphisms (+936C > T, +405C > G and -141A > C) in the 3' and 5' untranslated region (3'-UTR, 5'-UTR) of VEGF-A were studied using PCR and RFLP. Also, the mRNA expression of VEGF-A in these tissues was studied by real-time PCR. RESULTS: Distribution of polymorphisms in the 5'-UTR (VEGF-VEGF -141A > C and +405C > G) and 3'-UTR (VEGF +936C > T) were all significantly different in PTC and benign thyroid tissue (p = 0.0001, 0.001 and 0.028 respectively). The VEGF -141 C allele was more common in PTC with lymph node metastases (p = 0.026). VEGF + 405 Galleles andVEGF +936 CC genotype were more common in PTC of advanced pathological staging (p = 0.018 and 0.017 respectively). Also, increased expression of VEGF-A mRNA was noted in PTC compared to control (p = 0.009). Within the group of patients with conventional PTC, those with lymph nodal metastases had a higher level of VEGF-A mRNA expression than other patients (p = 0.0003). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that VEGF polymorphisms and mRNA expression may predict the aggressiveness behaviour of thyroid cancer.

RESUMO

Biaxial strain is known to induce ferroelectricity in thin films of nominally nonferroelectric materials such as SrTiO3. By a direct comparison of the strained and strain-free SrTiO3 films using dielectric, ferroelectric, Raman, nonlinear optical and nanoscale piezoelectric property measurements, we conclude that all SrTiO3 films and bulk crystals are relaxor ferroelectrics, and the role of strain is to stabilize longer-range correlation of preexisting nanopolar regions, likely originating from minute amounts of unintentional Sr deficiency in nominally stoichiometric samples. These findings highlight the sensitive role of stoichiometry when exploring strain and epitaxy-induced electronic phenomena in oxide films, heterostructures, and interfaces.

RESUMO

Piezoelectric materials, which convert mechanical to electrical energy and vice versa, are typically characterized by the intimate coexistence of two phases across a morphotropic phase boundary. Electrically switching one to the other yields large electromechanical coupling coefficients. Driven by global environmental concerns, there is currently a strong push to discover practical lead-free piezoelectrics for device engineering. Using a combination of epitaxial growth techniques in conjunction with theoretical approaches, we show the formation of a morphotropic phase boundary through epitaxial constraint in lead-free piezoelectric bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) films. Electric field-dependent studies show that a tetragonal-like phase can be reversibly converted into a rhombohedral-like phase, accompanied by measurable displacements of the surface, making this new lead-free system of interest for probe-based data storage and actuator applications.

RESUMO

We report the magnetic and electrical characteristics of polycrystalline FeTiO_{3} synthesized at high pressure that is isostructural with acentric LiNbO_{3} (LBO). Piezoresponse force microscopy, optical second harmonic generation, and magnetometry demonstrate ferroelectricity at and below room temperature and weak ferromagnetism below approximately 120 K. These results validate symmetry-based criteria and first-principles calculations of the coexistence of ferroelectricity and weak ferromagnetism in a series of transition metal titanates crystallizing in the LBO structure.

RESUMO

Oxygen octahedral rotations are the most common phase transitions in perovskite crystal structures. Here we show that the color symmetry of such pure elastic distortions is isomorphic to magnetic point groups, which allows their probing through distinguishing polar versus magnetic symmetry. We demonstrate this isomorphism using nonlinear optical probing of the octahedral rotational transition in a compressively strained SrTiO3 thin film that exhibits ferroelectric (4mm) and antiferrodistortive (4{'}mm{'}) phases evolving through independent phase transitions. The approach has broader applicability for probing materials with lattice rotations that can be mapped to color groups.

RESUMO

Screening of the Merck compound collection identified 6 as an unusually simple, low molecular weight hit with moderate affinity for GABAA receptors. The structural novelty of 6, compared to our advanced series of GABAA alpha5 inverse agonists, made it an attractive molecule for further exploration. This paper will describe the evolution of 6 into a new series of ligands with nanomolar affinity and functional selectivity for GABAA alpha5 receptor subtypes.

RESUMO

Biaxial compressive strain has been used to markedly enhance the ferroelectric properties of BaTiO3 thin films. This strain, imposed by coherent epitaxy, can result in a ferroelectric transition temperature nearly 500 degrees C higher and a remanent polarization at least 250% higher than bulk BaTiO3 single crystals. This work demonstrates a route to a lead-free ferroelectric for nonvolatile memories and electro-optic devices.

RESUMO

Neurosteroids have been shown to mediate some of their physiological effects via a modulatory site on type A inhibitory gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAA) receptors. In particular, recent evidence has implicated selective potentiation of the delta subunit of GABAA receptors as an important mediator of in vitro and in vivo neurosteroid activity. However, this has been demonstrated for only a very small number of steroids, so both the generality of this finding, and the structural features of steroids which mediate functional delta-selectivity, are unclear. We have used a potentiometric assay based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer to measure GABA-activated responses in L(tk-) cells stably transfected with human GABAA receptor alpha4beta3delta and alpha4beta3gamma2 receptor subtypes. A set of 28 steroids were evaluated on these subtypes to characterise their functional potency and efficacy in modulating GABA responses. For most compounds there was a clear separation of their efficacy profiles between the receptor subtypes, with a substantially larger maximal response at the alpha4beta3delta receptor. 5beta-Pregnan-3beta-ol-20-one, 5beta-pregnane-3alpha,20beta-diol and 5beta-pregnane-3alpha,17alpha-diol-11,20-dione showed particularly high efficacy for alpha4beta3delta. No compounds were identified that simply inhibited responses at delta-containing receptors. However, 5beta-pregnane-3alpha,17alpha,20beta-triol, prednisolone 21-acetate, 4-pregnene-17alpha,20alpha-diol-3-one-20-acetate, 4-pregnen-20alpha-ol-3-one, and 5beta-pregnane-3alpha,17alpha,21-triol-20-one inhibited, though did not abolish, GABA responses at the alpha4beta3gamma2 subtype, while evoking modest-amplitude potentiation of alpha4beta3delta responses. Molecular modelling on this compound series using principal components analysis indicates that several structural features of steroids underlie their relative functional selectivity for potentiation of delta-containing GABAA receptors.

RESUMO

Inhibitory GABA(A) receptor modulators are widely used therapeutic agents for a variety of central nervous system disorders. Ltk(-) cells stably expressing human recombinant GABA(A) subunits (alpha1beta1-3gamma2s) were seeded into 96-well plates, loaded with chlorocoumarin-2-dimyristoyl phosphatidylethanolamine and bis(1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbiturate)trimethineoxonol, and rapid fluorescence resonance energy transfer technique (FRET) measurements were made of GABA-evoked depolarizations in low-Cl(-) buffer using a voltage/ion probe reader. The influence of different betasubunits on the ability of agents to modulate and directly activate the ion channel was examined. GABA evoked concentration-dependent decreases in FRET, increasing fluorescence emission ratio (460/580 nm) at alpha1beta1gamma2, alpha1beta2gamma2, and alpha1beta3gamma2 receptors with similar maximal amplitude (P > 0.05, n = 17) and EC(50) values of 2.4 +/- 0.2, 2.5 +/- 0.2, and 1.3 +/- 0.1 microM, respectively. Piperidine-4-sulfonic acid and 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroisoxazolo[5,4-c]pyridin-3-ol were less potent, with EC(50) values of 8.7 +/- 0.9, 9.2 +/- 0.5, and 11.7 +/- 1.2, and 43.7 +/- 6.4, 24.8 +/- 1.6, and 26.1 +/- 2.4 microM, respectively. Potency and maximal efficacy of propofol, methyl 6,7-dimethoxy-4-ethyl-beta-carboline-3-carboxylate, pentobarbital, and steroids, 5alpha-pregnan-3alpha-ol-20-one and 5beta-pregnan-3alpha-ol-20-one, were unaffected by the beta isoform present in the receptor complex. However, several compounds displayed beta2/3 subunit selectivity, notably loreclezole, R(-)-etomidate, and a group of anti-inflammatory agents including mefenamic acid, flufenamic acid, meclofenamic acid, tolfenamic acid, niflumic acid, and diflunisal. The anti-inflammatories exhibited varying levels of efficacy at beta2/3 subunits, with micromolar potency, while having antagonist or weak inverse agonist profiles at alpha1beta1gamma2. Diflunisal was the most efficacious compound, eliciting greater potentiation than loreclezole (90 +/- 14% and 109 +/- 14% at beta3 and beta2, respectively, compared with 62 +/- 6% and 56 +/- 3%), whereas niflumic acid exhibited the lowest efficacy. An additional agent, olsalazine, weakly potentiated responses at all three receptors without any selectivity. This study identifies and characterizes a variety of allosteric modulators for which betasubunits are an important determinant of efficacy and potency.

RESUMO

A series of substituted 3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-ones with high binding affinity for the benzodiazepine site of GABAA receptors containing the alpha5-subunit has been identified. These compounds have consistently higher binding affinity for the GABAA alpha5 receptor subtype over the other benzodiazepine-sensitive GABAA receptor subtypes (alpha1, alpha2 and alpha3). Compounds with a range of efficacies for the benzodiazepine site of alpha5-containing GABAA receptors were identified, including the alpha5 inverse agonist 3,3-dimethyl-8-methylthio-5-(pyridin-2-yl)-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-one 22 and the alpha5 agonist 8-ethylthio-3-methyl-5-(1-oxidopyridin-2-yl)-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-one 19.
