RESUMO
A total of 310 sera from HIV-1 infected patients detected in Moscow were serologically typed using 10 V3-imitating synthetic peptides. Subtype B virus is the most prevalent in Moscow (66.7%), serotype A/C ranks second (21.3%).

Different strains of HIV-1, circulating among drug addicts introducing drugs intravenously and detected on the territories of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, have been characterized by the methods of the comparative analysis of genetic sequences of different variants of HIV (gene typing) and the study of the immunological properties of autoimmune sera (serotyping).

5'-Phosphites (5'-hydrogenphosphonates) of 2',3'-dideoxynucleosides (T, A, G, C) were synthesized and studied as inhibitors of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in MT4 and CEM13 cell cultures. It was shown that all 5'-phosphites effectively inhibit the production of viral antigens and protect cells from the cytotoxic effect of HIV infection. 5'-Phosphites were more active antiviral compounds than the corresponding nucleosides.

Using a panel of sera from HIV-infected persons and donors, the authors showed that radioimmunoprecipitation assays compare favourably with immunoblotting assays. With radioimmunoprecipitation, cross reactions were observed between HIV-2 antigens and HIV-2 antibodies, and that the nature of cross reactivity differs from that observed with immunoblotting. Potentials of radioimmunoprecipitation assays as a confirmatory test for use with sera that have given indeterminate results in immunoblotting assays and contradictory results in enzyme immunoassays are examined.
