RESUMO

The presence of prominent subarachnoid spaces and ventriculomegaly on cranial computerized tomographic scans has been described in multiple generalized systemic illnesses in the pediatric population. We have described an infant with severe congenital heart disease who had, on a cranial CT scan for evaluation of developmental defects, demonstrated this appearance.

RESUMO

In this paper we present an asymptomatic patient with enteroliths as a result of prior hemicolectomy for cecal carcinoma. We briefly review the clinical, pathologic and radiographic findings found in such patients. The significance of this condition is to realize that it is usually a benign entity per se, but that it may also be a clue in determining underlying pathology within the GI tract.

RESUMO

Unilateral hypertrophy of facial muscles is an uncommon phenomenon with few reported cases in the worldwide literature. The few that have been reported have usually been associated with accompanying disease processes and clinical findings. In this paper, we describe a case of idiopathic hemihypertrophy of facial muscles and the MRI findings which were seen in this case.

RESUMO

The relationship between nutrition, fertility and blood composition was studied in 400 cows from commercial farms. Fertility evaluated by overall conception rate (OCR) was shown to be significantly related proportion of concentrate and roughage feeds in the diet, and to its content of dry matter, digestible protein, Ca and P. The ratio of serum total lipids to glucose and a newly introduced parameter, delta Pi (a calculated value, obtained by subtracting whole blood levels of Pi from those of the blood serum), showed a highly significant relationship to OCR. No significant relationship was found between OCR and serum, total lipids, cholesterol, urea, Ca, Mg, organic and inorganic phosphate. The values and significance of the 2 blood parameters which showed a relationship to fertility are discussed.

RESUMO

Mutagenic activity in milk and milk products was tested by the Salmonella mammalian-microsome mutagenicity test (Ames test). Salmonella mutants susceptible to base-pair substitution and frame-shift mutagens gave positive results with heat-sterilized milk, particularly after activation by the S-9 fraction of microsomes. Maximum increase of His+ revertants was more than twice the spontaneous increase. The chemical specification of the mutagenic activity was not yet defined, but it was present in the chloroform extract of milk.

RESUMO

Characterization of psychrotrophic bacteria from cultured milk has shown that most (72%) of the psychrotrophs which were isolated originated from the starter culture. Streptococcus lactis subsp. diacetilactis was the most abundant organism and dominated both Streptococcus cremoris and Leuconostoc cremoris , which was the least abundant. The doubling time of S. lactis subsp. diacetilactis at 7 C was 20 h and 54 h in Trypticase Soy Broth at pH 7.0 and 5.0, respectively. This indicates a growth potential which could be significant to the quality of the product over a long storage period. Psychrotrophic coliforms which had optimal growth temperatures within the range of 15 to 30 C could also be found in small numbers. Their survival in the product was limited and it was concluded that they have little effect on shelf-life.

RESUMO

Enterobacter cloacae , Citrobacter freundii , Serratia liquefaciens and Escherichia coli were the predominant Enterobacteriaceae species isolated from raw milk samples collected from refrigerated bulk tank trucks at the entry of a milk processing plant. About half of the 181 Enterobacteriaceae isolated were psychrotrophs and these included 80% of E. cloacae , 80% of Klebsiella ozaenae and 62% of S. liquefaciens . S. liquefaciens grew in raw and in pasteurized milk at refrigeration temperatures, causing significant pH reduction but only slight lipolytic changes. The significant proteolytic activity of S. liquefaciens in refrigerated milk samples is assumed to have been the cause of the unclean flavor detected.

RESUMO

Comparative laboratory tests of cheesemaking show similarity between chicken pepsin and calf rennet. Suitability of chicken pepsin for large-scale production of Emmental (Swiss) and Kashkaval-type cheeses was tested.

RESUMO

The patterns of distribution of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes were determined in normal and inflamed bovine udder tissues, in normal and mastitic milk-leucocytes and serum. LDH1 was the most common isoenzyme found in all the types of tissues examined, normal tissues contained the lowest proportions of LDH5 whereas the inflamed tissues and leucocytes from mastitic milk showed a higher proportion of LDH4 and LDH5. It seems that the origin of the elevated LDH in mastitic milk is the leucocytes and the parenchyma cells of the udder. The significance of the shift in the molecular forms of LDH isoenzymes is discussed in relation to possible alternations in energy metabolism in the inflamed bovine mammary gland.
