RESUMO

Risk-taking behaviors are not a new phenomenon for young adults (YAs) and are an important aspect of understanding decision-making for YAs with diabetes. This article builds on a previous model of diabetes-specific risk-taking by providing other examples of risky situations and behaviors that are specific to YAs with type 1 diabetes, reviewing models of risk-taking behavior, and discussing how these models might inform clinical care for YAs with diabetes.

RESUMO

Transgender men need contraception if engaging in intercourse with a cis-gender male partner. The copper IUD is an effective, non-hormonal contraceptive well suited for trans-males even while utilizing gender affirming hormone therapy. A gender-neutral medical facility with well-trained and sensitive staff is the ideal setting to provide such contraceptive care.

RESUMO

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The increasing prevalence of adolescent obesity has led to consideration of the potential effect of obesity on risky sexual behaviors. In the current study we examined whether body mass index (BMI) was related to age at sexual debut, type of sexual behavior, partner number, and condom use in a population of adolescent women at high risk for obesity and risky sexual behaviors. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional examination of 860 sexually active, predominantly minority, adolescent women who received medical care at an urban health center from 2007 through 2013. INTERVENTION AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Self-reported age at sexual debut, types of sexual intercourse, number of partners and condom use was compared with clinically assessed BMI. RESULTS: BMI was positively associated with number of sexual partners (P = .001) and history of attempted anal intercourse (P = .002). An inverse association was observed with age at first anal intercourse (P = .040). CONCLUSION: In this sample of adolescent women, increased BMI was associated with riskier sexual practices at a younger age. Results of this study suggest that overweight and obese adolescents are a vulnerable population who might need targeted sexual health counseling.

RESUMO

This article provides an overview of the medical and mental health needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth population. Information is reviewed regarding both primary medical care and the special health risks that these youth face. Providers are introduced to the concept that societal and internalized homophobia lead directly to certain health disparities, including substance use, school and family rejection, depression, and increased sexually transmitted infection acquisition. This article familiarizes the primary care practitioner with the health care needs of the LGBT population and the research behind the various recommendations for caring for these youth.
