The fattening of calves is often associated with high antimicrobial use and the selection of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The objective of this observational longitudinal study was to describe the AMR and strain dynamics, using whole-genome sequencing (WGS), of fecal Escherichia coli in a cohort of 22 calves. All calves received antimicrobial group treatments on Day (D) 1 (oxytetracycline, intramuscularly) and on D4 through D12 (doxycycline, in-feed). Additionally, eight calves received individual parenteral treatments between D7 and D59, including florfenicol, amoxicillin, marbofloxacin, and gamithromycin. Rectal swabs were collected from all calves on D1 (prior to treatment), D2, D9, and D82. The swabs were spread onto Enterobacterales-selective agar, and three E. coli colonies per plate were subjected to WGS. Out of 264 isolates across all calves and sampling times, 80 unique strains were identified, a majority of which harbored genes conferring resistance to tetracyclines, streptomycin, and sulfonamides. The diversity of strains decreased during the in-feed antimicrobial group treatment of the calves. On D82, 90% of isolates were strains that were not isolated at previous sampling times, and the median number per strain of AMR determinants to tetracyclines, florfenicol, ß-lactams, quinolones, or macrolides decreased compared to D9. Additionally, clonal dissemination of some strains represented the main transmission route of AMR determinants. In this study, WGS revealed important variations in strain diversity and genotypic AMR of fecal E. coli over time in calves subjected to group antimicrobial treatments. IMPORTANCE: The continued emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) determinants are serious global concerns. The dynamics of AMR spread and persistence in bacterial and animal host populations are complex and not solely driven by antimicrobial selection pressure. In calf fattening, both antimicrobial use and carriage prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria are generally recognized as high. This study provides new insights into the short-term, within-farm dynamics and transmission of AMR determinants in Escherichia coli from the dominant fecal flora of calves subjected to antimicrobial group treatments during the rearing period. The diversity of E. coli strains decreased over time, although, in contrast to previous observations in extended-spectrum ß-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales, the predominance of a few clones was not observed. The spread of AMR determinants occurred through the dissemination of clonal strains among calves. The median number per strain of AMR determinants conferring resistance to selected antimicrobials decreased toward the end of the rearing period.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the changes in the frequency of physical activity (PA) counseling and in the predictors of primary care PA promotion in Québec primary care physicians (PCPs) between 2010 and 2020. METHODS: In 2010, we conducted a survey among Québec PCPs. Questions included: frequency of promoting PA to patients, perceived barriers, needs to improve PA promotion practice, frequency of PCPs' PA practice, and sociodemographic information. In 2020, we took over the 2010 questionnaire to document the evolution of the PA promotion practice. RESULTS: The proportion of PCPs discussing PA with their patients significantly increased (P < .05) in 2020 for the following health conditions: depression, low back pain, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cancer; it declined (P < .05) for overweight patients, those with metabolic syndrome, and in primary prevention. Collaboration with PA professionals was the major need identified, and it increased in 2020. PCPs' own practice of PA was a predictor of PA promotion in 2010 (odds ratio = 6.679; P < .001) and in 2020 (odds ratio = 6.679; P < .001). In both 2010 and in 2020, older or more experienced PCPs were more likely to discuss PA with their patients without diagnosed diseases than younger ones or those with less experience. CONCLUSIONS: Over the last 10 years, there has been a significant increase in PCPs promoting PA in Québec; however, it has been mainly oriented toward secondary prevention. It is concerning that PA counseling in primary prevention has declined, notably among younger PCPs. The stronger claim for closer collaboration with kinesiologists suggests that PCPs are in favor of an interprofessional strategy, namely collaboration with PA specialists.

The assessment of human postmortem concentrations of Δ9-THC (THC) and its metabolites, 11-nor-9-carboxy-THC (THCCOOH) and 11-hydroxy-THC (11-OH-THC), is routinely performed in forensic toxicology laboratories. However, the literature on cannabinoids postmortem redistribution (PMR) is scarce and highlights their complex postmortem changes. This study aims to investigate the postmortem behavior of THC and its metabolites in order to provide practitioners with potential indicators of PMR. To do so, antemortem and postmortem cases positive for cannabinoids were compiled in a database. Its analysis shows significantly higher THC concentrations in postmortem blood than in antemortem blood. Antemortem and postmortem blood also present significantly different profiles for their THC to THCCOOH ratios. Whereas antemortem blood generally shows THCCOOH concentrations higher or equal to THC, several postmortem cases show the opposite, with THC concentrations higher than THCCOOH. While occurrence of postmortem redistribution (PMR) is difficult to measure directly, an evaluation was performed using the central to peripheral (C/P) blood concentrations ratio as a proxy. With a C/P significantly lower than 1.0 for THC and significantly higher than 1.0 for THCCOOH, the PMR hypothesis is supported for both compounds, with redistribution towards peripheral blood for THC and towards central blood for THCCOOH. On the other hand, 11-OH-THC does not show a C/P significantly different than 1.0, suggesting the absence of PMR. Influence of body mass index, conservation state and postmortem interval on C/P was statistically analyzed and no significant impact was observed. To compare and contrast C/P observed in the database with those published in the literature, a meta-analysis was performed using a median of median (MM) model. THC PMR towards peripheral blood is supported by a global estimate of 0.81 (CI95%: 0.51 to 1.2). Redistribution towards femoral blood appears to be stronger than towards iliac blood; indeed, the median estimate of C/P decreases to 0.64 (CI95%: 0.40 to 1.1) when studies with iliac blood were removed from the meta-analysis. THCCOOH PMR towards central blood is supported by a C/P median estimate of 1.3 (CI95%: 0.97 to 1.6). THC PMR can be suspected when these indicators are observed (i) high THC blood concentration (>50 ng/mL), (ii) THC C/P lower than 1.0 (iii) blood THC/THCCOOH concentration ratios greater than 1.0 and (iv) non-detectability of THCCOOH in urine. In postmortem samples, many factors may contribute to the overestimation of THC concentration, therefore a careful interpretation is required, relying on both central and peripheral blood samples.

The lack of physical activity (PA) amongst children is a public health concern in many industrialized countries. School-based daily physical activity (DPA) policies are a promising intervention for increasing PA levels amongst children. Informed by a logic model framework, this study examines the factors associated with meeting a 'top-down' DPA objective in the context of a 'bottom-up' implementation of a school-based DPA initiative in Quebec, Canada. An online survey assessing school-level inputs, outputs and outcomes was sent to all participating schools (415). Crude odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using logistic regression to evaluate potential associations between factors (inputs and outputs) and the school's adherence to providing at least 60 minutes of DPA (outcome). Adjusted ORs (AORs) and 95% CIs were calculated using a multivariate logistic regression to identify the best set of factors to predict adherence to the DPA objective. A total of 404 schools completed the questionnaire, amongst which 71% reported meeting the DPA target by implementing school-tailored activities. Three factors were identified as the best set of school inputs and outputs to predict meeting the objective: financial resources (per student) (AOR = 1.02; 95% CI 1.01-1.03), a shared vision amongst the school-team members that PA benefits learning outcomes (AOR = 1.94; 95% CI 1.04-3.19) and having conducted a detailed situational analysis (AOR = 1.89; 95% CI 1.00-3.58). Given that 'bottom-up' implementation might favour the development of policies that are more acceptable to stakeholders, our results should be considered by decision-makers and school administrators when implementing DPA initiatives.

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the school-level factors of Quebec's Active at school! initiative, whose goal was to encourage elementary school teams to develop and implement tailored mobilizing strategies and activities for providing 60 minutes of DPA to their students. Our results suggest that the school team's perception of PA benefits on learning outcomes, the financial resources (per student) provided to the school, and a locally conducted situational analysis at the beginning of the implementation process are significant predictors of meeting the DPA objective. The secondary aim of our study was to explore whether the factors were different according to the geographical setting of the schools. Conducting a situational analysis was shown to be of particular importance for urban schools but did not seem to play a pivotal role for rural schools, suggesting that different organizational culture and population characteristics may be at work when implementing a bottom-up initiative in these two contexts.

One innovative strategy to support child-friendly cities is street-based interventions that provide safe, vehicle-free spaces for children to play and move about freely. School streets are one such innovation involving closing streets around elementary schools to vehicular traffic to improve children's safety as they come and go from school while providing opportunities for children to play and socialize on the street. Launching these initiatives in communities dominated by automobiles is enormously challenging and little is known about why these interventions are successfully launched in some places but not others. As part of a larger research project called Levelling the Playing Fields, two School Street initiatives were planned for the 2021-2022 school year; one initiative was successfully launched in Kingston, ON, while the second initiative failed to launch in Montreal, QC. Using a critical realist evaluation methodology, this paper documents the contextual elements and key mechanisms that enabled and constrained the launch of these School Streets in these cities, through document analysis and key informant interviews. Our results suggest that municipal and school support for the initiative are both imperative to establishing legitimacy and collaborative governance, both of which were necessary for a successful launch.

BACKGROUND: Less than half of Canadian children meet the Canadian Physical Activity (PA) Guidelines, and the proportion is even lower among children living in underprivileged neighbourhoods. Regular PA supports physical, cognitive, and psychological/social health among school-aged children. Successful implementation of school-based daily physical activity (DPA) programs is therefore important for all children and crucial for children who attend schools in lower socioeconomic settings. The purpose of this study is to uncover what worked, for whom, how, and why during the three-year implementation period of a new "flexible" DPA program, while paying particular attention to the socioeconomic setting of the participating schools. METHODS: This study is a realist evaluation using mixed methods for data generation. Longitudinal data were collected in 415 schools once a year during the three-year implementation period of the program using questionnaires. Data analysis was completed in three steps and included qualitative thematic analysis using a mixed inductive and deductive method and chi-square tests to test and refine context-mechanism-outcome (CMO) configurations. RESULTS: Giving the school teams autonomy in the choice of strategies appropriate to their context have allowed schools to take ownership of program implementation by activating a community empowerment process, which resulted in a cultural shift towards a sustainable DPA provision in most settings. In rural underprivileged settings, the mobilization of local resources seems to have successfully created the conditions necessary for implementing and maintaining changes in practice. In disadvantaged urban settings, implementing local leadership structures (leader, committee, and meetings) provided pivotal assistance to members of the school teams in providing new DPA opportunities. However, without continued external funding, those schools seem unable to support local leadership structures on their own, jeopardizing the sustainability of the program for children living in disadvantaged urban areas. CONCLUSION: By exploring CMO configurations, we have been able to better understand what worked, for whom, how and why during the three-year implementation period of the Active at School! PROGRAM: When implementing DPA policies, decision makers should consider adjusting resource allocations to meet the actual needs of schools from different backgrounds to promote equal PA opportunities for all children.

Feeding waste milk containing antimicrobial residues (WMA) to calves has been associated with increased antimicrobial resistance in calves' commensal bacterial flora. The objectives of this study were (1) to document practices related to the disposal of WMA on Swiss dairy farms and (2) to evaluate the association between farm characteristics and the feeding of WMA to calves. A web-based questionnaire on practices surrounding waste milk disposal was completed by 1,625 dairy producers (10.9% of solicited producers). Logistic regression models were built to evaluate the association between herd characteristics and the practice of feeding WMA. Waste milk produced during and up to the first milking after completion of antimicrobial treatment or during the withdrawal period was fed to at least some of the calves on 47.3% of respondents' farms. Farms in organic production had lower odds of feeding WMA to calves than nonorganic farms [odds ratio (OR) 0.59]. Farms located in the eastern region of Switzerland, as opposed to those in the western region, had increased odds of feeding WMA to calves (OR 2.01). A yearly average bulk tank somatic cell count ≥150,000 cells/mL was associated with increased odds of feeding WMA to calves compared with the reference category of <100,000 cells/mL (OR 1.62). An average cow-level annual milk production ≥8,500 L was associated with increased odds of feeding WMA to calves compared with farms in the interquartile range with a production of 6,500 to 8,499 L (OR 1.24). Further research is warranted to investigate dairy farmers' motivations affecting this practice, and to quantitatively define calves' exposure to antimicrobial residues and the resulting antimicrobial resistance in calves' commensal flora on these farms.

The feeding of waste milk containing antibiotic residues (WMA) to calves has been associated with the shedding of antibiotic-resistant bacteria by calves. However, little is known regarding farmers' intrinsic factors affecting this practice, and on which it would be relevant to intervene in order to change this practice. The objectives of this study were (1) to describe the farmers' intrinsic factors, such as perceived benefits, risks, and social norms related to the feeding of WMA to calves, antibiotic resistance, and antibiotic use, and (2) to evaluate how the feeding of WMA to calves is related to farmers' personal values and perceptions related to WMA feeding and antibiotic resistance. Answers to an online survey were collected from 233 Swiss dairy producers (38.3% response rate). The proportion of respondents who fed WMA to calves was 48.3%. In a hierarchical logistic regression model, only perception factors extracted by factor analysis were associated with the feeding of WMA to calves, namely (in decreasing order of magnitude): farm-level benefits of WMA feeding, the interaction of farm-level benefits with support from governmental authorities, and causes and threats of antibiotic resistance. The results suggest that, in order to reduce the feeding of WMA to calves, communications to dairy producers should focus on changing the perceived benefits of this practice in comparison to those of alternative WMA disposal methods carrying a lower risk of antibiotic resistance. The involvement of veterinarians and governmental authorities in these communications and in supporting producers may increase the successful adoption of alternative WMA disposal methods.

This study examined socioeconomic and gender-based disparities in motor competence (MC) amongst 6-12-year-old children (N = 2654). Validated product-oriented tests assessing agility, balance and coordination were used to measure MC. School-level socioeconomic status (low, middle, high) was used to assess socioeconomic disparities. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were conducted and odds ratios were calculated for the likelihood of having low MC by gender and socioeconomic status (SES). Girls displayed lower MC than boys for agility and coordination involving object-control (P < 0.001) while boys scored lower than girls for balance and hand-foot coordination (P < 0.001). Children in high SES schools displayed the highest level of MC for agility, balance and coordination (P < 0.001). Compared to the children in high SES schools, odds of having low competence in balance was higher for the children in low SES schools and odds of having low competence in agility and coordination were higher for the children in both low and middle SES schools. Newell's model of constraints (1986) and Bourdieu's concept of habitus (1984) were used to consider potential explanations of the observed disparities. To level up inequalities in children's MC, resources invested in school-based interventions should be proportionate to the school SES.

Social mobility refers to the intergenerational transmission of socio-economic status, and therefore of health status. Hence, it is important to consider social mobility to tackle the social gradient in health in the long term. Fostering social mobility requires developing public policies that ensure equal opportunities for all children. The intent of this commentary is to illustrate how a proportionate universalism approach to school-based physical activity could be a way to promote equal opportunity for children within the school environment. Alberta's Daily Physical Activity policy and the APPLE Schools program are used to illustrate this approach: these two programs not only create enabling environments that can support children in adopting healthy lifestyles but also contribute to the reduction of social inequalities in physical activity by fostering capacity building.


RéSUMé: La mobilité sociale fait référence à la transmission intergénérationnelle du statut socio-économique et, par conséquent, de l'état de santé. Il est donc important de considérer la mobilité sociale dans l'action publique visant à atténuer le gradient social de santé à long terme. Favoriser la mobilité sociale nécessite d'élaborer des politiques publiques propres à assurer l'égalité des chances pour tous les enfants afin qu'ils aient la possibilité d'améliorer leur sort. Ce commentaire vise à illustrer comment une approche universelle proportionnée de promotion de l'activité physique en milieu scolaire pourrait être un moyen de promouvoir l'égalité des chances en éducation. La politique d'activités physiques quotidienne de l'Alberta et le programme APPLE Schools sont utilisés pour illustrer cette approche : ces deux programmes créent non seulement des environnements favorables à l'adoption d'un mode de vie sain pour les enfants, mais contribuent également, à travers un processus de renforcement des capacités, à la réduction des inégalités sociales en matière d'activité physique.

BACKGROUND: Physical Activity and Sport (PAS) interventions can reduce the social and economic burden of non-communicable diseases and improve the wellbeing of the population. Social return on investment (SROI) has the capacity to measure broader socio-economic outcomes in a singular monetary ratio to help identify the most impactful and cost-beneficial intervention. This review aimed to systematically identify and review studies using the SROI method within the field of PAS and assess their quality. METHODS: Peer-reviewed and grey literature SROI studies were identified through a systematic search of six databases. Two reviewers independently assessed the identified studies to determine eligibility. Study quality was assessed using the Krelv et al. 12-point framework. For each included study, information was extracted and classified into summary tables. Extracted information included study and participant characteristics, type of outcomes and SROI ratio. The PRISMA guidelines were followed. RESULTS: Seventeen studies published between 2010 and 2018 met the inclusion criteria. Most studies (94%) were non-peer reviewed publicly available reports, primarily conducted in the UK (76%), by private consulting firms (41%) and included all types of stakeholders (76%). PAS interventions included Primary prevention (47%), Sport for development (29%), Secondary and tertiary prevention (18%) and High-performance sport (6%). SROI ratios, which report the social value created in relation to the cost of an intervention, vary between 3:1 and 124:1 for the high-quality studies. CONCLUSIONS: The SROI framework can be a useful tool to inform policy-making relating to PAS investment as it can account for the wide societal benefits of PAS. The quality of studies in the field would benefit from the employment of an impact map (or logic model), reporting negative outcomes and using objective study designs. The application of the SROI method in the PAS field is relatively recent, and thus further research would be beneficial to promote its potential for policy-making bodies in the field.

Numerous factors affect milk somatic cell score (SCS) in dairy goats including physiologic factors such as stage of lactation, and pathological factors such as bacterial intramammary infection (IMI), e.g. staphylococcal IMI. The association between IMI and udder inflammation and especially differences in the inflammatory response between the different staphylococcal species are yet to be identified. The objectives of this study were to use data from a recently published longitudinal study that characterized IMI status over time to evaluate the species-specific effect of staphylococcal IMI on udder half-level milk SCS, and to evaluate the effect of time since IMI diagnosis on this relationship. Half-level milk samples for culture and determination of SCS were collected from 171 goats starting within 10 days in milk (DIM), and then at various intervals until ≥ 120 DIM. A mixed linear model was used to assess the effect of species-specific staphylococcal IMI on SCS, accounting for confounding by lentivirus infection, parity, DIM, and the contralateral half IMI status, and for repeated measurements within udder half and for clustering of halves within goat. A second model was used to evaluate the effect of time since first IMI diagnosis and its interaction with staphylococcal IMI status on the relationship between staphylococcal IMI status and SCS. Lentivirus seropositivity and contralateral half IMI status were associated with SCS. Staphylococcal IMI status was associated with SCS, with differences between species. Staphyloccocus caprae, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus simulans, and Staphylococcus xylosus were associated with higher SCS than a number of other species. Time since first diagnosis did not modify the relationship between IMI status and SCS.

The objectives of the research described here were to describe the persistence of intramammary infections (IMI) caused by coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS) in goats using strain-typing, and to evaluate the relationship between species-specific CNS IMI and somatic cell score (SCS) at the udder-half level. Udder-half milk samples were collected from all 909 lactating goats (1817 halves; 1 blind half) in a single herd. Milk samples were cultured on Columbia blood agar, and 220 goats with at least one half yielding a single colony type CNS were enrolled for two additional half-level samplings at approximately 1-month intervals. Isolates were identified to the species level by matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry or PCR amplification and partial sequencing of tuf or rpoB. An IMI was defined as persistent when ≥1 follow-up sample yielded the same species and strain as on Day 0 based on pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. A generalised mixed linear model was used to evaluate the odds of persistence as a function of CNS species. A mixed linear model was used to evaluate the relationship between IMI status on a given day and SCS. Among 192 IMI, 69.8% were persistent based on species and strain-type. Staphylococcus simulans IMI had higher odds of persistence than Staphylococcus arlettae IMI. In primiparous goats, Staphylococcus epidermidis IMI was associated with higher SCS than S. arlettae, Staphylococcus xylosus and 'other CNS' IMI. The differences detected in the present study between CNS species, with regard to persistence of IMI and association with SCS, highlight the need to study CNS at the species and strain level to understand the pathogenicity and epidemiology of CNS in goats.

The objectives of this study were to 1) correlate pre-partum teat skin colonization with non-aureus staphylococcal (NAS) intramammary infection (IMI) in early lactation, and 2) evaluate infection dynamics of subclinical NAS IMI in goats during lactation in a small ruminant lentivirus-infected herd. Pre-partum teat skin swabs (41 goats, 82 halves) and post-partum half-level milk samples (106 goats, 203 halves) were collected at various intervals starting at ≤10 days in milk (DIM) until ≥120 DIM. Teat skin colonization and IMI were defined by culture and strain-typing. The association between the pre-kidding udder-half teat skin sample status and early lactation IMI status for a given species was investigated using McNemar's exact test or logistic regression. Time to IMI elimination and time to new IMI were evaluated by discrete-time survival analysis. Halves with S. caprae isolated from teat skin prior to kidding had increased odds of S. caprae IMI ≤ 10 DIM. Time to IMI elimination varied as a function of NAS species. Intramammary infections detected >10 DIM had a higher hazard of elimination (hazard ratio [HR] 5.6, 95% CI 2.8-11.2) than IMI detected ≤10 DIM. The presence of an IMI in the contralateral half was associated with a higher hazard of new IMI (HR 2.1, 95% CI 1.3-3.4) in an uninfected half. Further studies on interventional strategies targeting early IMI and IMI caused by persistent species are warranted.

The objectives of this study were (1) to report the rates of new intramammary infection (IMI) and spontaneous IMI cure over the dry period in 3 dairy goat herds; (2) to evaluate the factors predicting infection dynamics over the dry period; and (3) to define milk quality parameter thresholds that predict infection dynamics over the dry period. Two consecutive udder-half milk samples were collected 10 to 14 d apart before dry-off from 288 goats in 3 herds, and 2 consecutive udder-half samples were collected 7 to 14 d apart in the following lactation, with the first sample being collected ≤10 d in milk, from 200 of the same goats. In 2 of the herds, udder-half milk samples were also collected at the same time points (n = 312 halves; 157 goats) for measurement of milk quality parameters. Standard aerobic culture of milk samples was performed for the detection of mastitis pathogens. To rule out the presence of Mycoplasma spp. IMI, milk samples were also cultured on modified Hayflick medium. Non-Mycoplasma isolates were speciated using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Staphylococcal isolates, when not identified by MALDI-TOF, were speciated using partial gene sequence analysis of rpoB or tuf. When >1 sample from an udder half yielded the same species, available isolates from the first and last positive samples for that species were strain-typed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Incidence of new IMI and cure rate were computed. Generalized linear mixed regression models were built to evaluate the associations between new IMI and pre-dry somatic cell score (SCS), between IMI persistence and half-level SCS, and between IMI persistence and pre-dry IMI species. Thresholds for pre-dry SCS and lactose concentration were computed to predict IMI persistence. Overall, 12.6% (48/380) of halves had a persistent IMI. Cumulative incidence of new IMI over the dry period was 13.2%, and cure rate was 52.0%. Pre-dry SCS was not associated with odds of new IMI or IMI persistence. Pre-dry IMI species was not associated with odds of persistence. Lactose concentration was not associated with odds of persistence. Regardless of culture data, the optimal pre-dry SCS threshold to detect IMI that would persist into the next lactation was 8.7, with sensitivity and specificity of 50 and 73.8%, respectively. Further studies on the effect of control measures on species-specific incidence and cure rates during the dry period are warranted.

The objective of this study was to predict the number of days to kidding in dairy goats by ultrasonographic measurement of three consecutive ribs and intercostal spaces or trunk diameter of fetuses. Two groups of primiparous and multiparous goats were examined by transabdominal ultrasonography. Actual kidding date was used to compute the true number of days to kidding relative to the ultrasound examination day. Linear regression models were built to predict days to kidding based on fetal measurements, parity, and number of kids. The model using the width of three consecutive ribs and intercostal spaces (n = 29 goats) showed a curvilinear relationship between days to kidding and rib distance (R2 = 0.60; P < 0.01). The trunk diameter model (n = 135 goats) showed a curvilinear relationship between days to kidding and trunk diameter with an effect of parity (R2 = 0.81; P < 0.01).

The most common pathogens causing intramammary infections (IMI) in dairy goats are staphylococci. Gene sequencing has been the reference method for identification of staphylococcal species, but MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry could represent a rapid and cost-effective alternative method. The objectives were to evaluate the typeability and accuracy of partial gene sequencing and MALDI-TOF for identifying staphylococci isolated from caprine milk samples, and to evaluate the relationship between staphylococcal species IMI, milk somatic cell score (SCS), and milk yield (MY). A composite (goat-level) milk sample was collected from all 940 lactating goats in a single herd. Dairy Herd Information Association test-day data for parity, days in milk, SCS, and MY were retrieved from Dairy Herd Information Association records. Milk samples were cultured on Columbia blood agar, and isolates from samples that yielded a single colony type of a presumptively identified Staphylococcus spp. were identified by PCR amplification and partial sequencing of rpoB, tuf, or 16S-rRNA, and MALDI-TOF. Mixed linear models were used to evaluate the relationship between staphylococcal IMI, SCS, and MY. The goat-level prevalence of staphylococcal IMI based on isolation of a single colony type was 24.4% (213/874). Seventeen goats had a contaminated sample. Among the remaining goats (n = 857), the most common species causing single colony-type IMI were Staphylococcus simulans (7.9%), Staphylococcus xylosus (3.5%), Staphylococcus caprae (3.6%), Staphylococcus chromogenes (2.9%), and Staphylococcus epidermidis (2.2%). The typeability of staphylococcal isolates with partial housekeeping gene sequence analysis (rpoB, complemented by tuf and 16S as needed) was 97.7%. The typeability and accuracy of MALDI-TOF were 84 and 100%, respectively. Overall, only Staphylococcus chromogenes IMI was associated with a higher SCS than goats with no growth. After adjusting for parity and stage of lactation, staphylococcal IMI status was not significantly associated with MY. For the staphylococci isolated from goats in this herd, MALDI-TOF proved an accurate method of speciation with a relatively high typeability. An association between staphylococcal IMI, SCS, and MY was not defined using goat-level data with the exception of S. chromogenes IMI, which was associated with a higher SCS than goats with no growth.

Five Japanese Black embryo transfer calves from a single embryo flush, 30 to 45-days-old, including 4 live animals for clinical examination and 1 dead for necropsy, were presented with a history of decreased milk intake and hypoproteinemia. Consistent clinicopathological abnormalities in the 4 calves presented for clinical evaluation included hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperbilirubinemia, increased creatine phosphokinase activity, and proteinuria. Four calves ultimately were necropsied and all had histologic evidence of immune complex glomerulonephritis. Glomerulonephritis in these calves was hypothesized to have resulted from the interaction of passively acquired antibodies at birth and active immunization at 7 and 28 days of age with a Salmonella Typhimurium core antigen vaccine.

Diseases of the middle ear or the larynx are not numerous in cattle but their diagnosis can be challenging for veterinary practitioners in the field. This article presents the ultrasonography of these 2 anatomic structures in order to provide new diagnostic tools to veterinary practitioners in the field. Brief anatomic reminders are first reported. The scanning techniques and normal images are then described. Finally, abnormal images of specific conditions are presented.
