RESUMO

The socialization (So) scale of the California Psychological Inventory is based partly on a role-taking or perspective-taking theory of social deviance and partly on the pragmatics of differentiating between more socialized and less socialized individuals. The theory, history, and current applications of the scale are reviewed, relationships to other scales and measures are examined, and the validity of the scale in arraying 69 male and 40 female samples along a putative continuum of socialization is evaluated. Finally, from these findings and from analyses of observers' adjectival and Q-sort descriptions significantly related to the scale, an interpretive psychology of the measure is propounded.

RESUMO

There are no precise psychologic criteria for the selection of residents in anesthesiology. We attempted to provide an objective guide by comparing clinical performance with psychologic tests which we administered to 95 beginning residents in six training programs. The performance of the residents was evaluated by faculty members at the end of the first and second years. We found that high-performance residents scored better than low-performance residents in the categories of Dominance, Independence, Empathy, Responsibility, Socialization, Achievement Motivation, and Well-Being. Prediction of high performance can also be based on Alpha personalities, who typically are independent, reliable, and self-disciplined. The California Psychological Inventory (CPI) is valuable in selecting people with these characteristics.

RESUMO

The revised California Psychological Inventory was studied in samples of 272 delinquent or criminal men vs. 1,088 controls, and 400 delinquent or criminal women vs. 2,266 controls, which gave delinquency base rates of 20% for men and 15% for women. Of the 27 scales evaluated, significant (p less than or equal to .01) mean differences were found on 25 for men and 26 for women. The best differentiator was So (Socialization), with point-biserial correlations of .54 for men and .58 for women. The new CPI theoretical model of personality structure also revealed significant differences. Persons in the Gamma and Delta lifestyle categories manifested higher rates of delinquency than did those in the Alpha and Beta. Low levels of ego integration were associated with greater incidence of delinquency in all four lifestyles.

RESUMO

79 male and 16 female residents in anesthesiology at six training centers took the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and Strong Interest Inventory (SII) in Year 1 and were rated for performance two years later. Descriptively, the total sample scored highest on CPI scales for Dominance, Social Presence, and Achievement via Independence, and on SII scales for investigative, mathematical, and medical science interests. Scores from a four-scale CPI cluster of Empathy. Socialization, Achievement via Conformance, and Achievement via Independence correlated .39 with ratings for men and .31 with ratings for women. In another sample of 20 residents, the cluster score correlated .30 with ratings gathered three years after testing. These findings, consonant with prior research, suggest that attributes such as empathy, strong internalization of pronormative values, and the ability to work well within either structured or open settings are conducive to superior performance in the specialty.

RESUMO

On a composite sample of 940 individuals assessed at the Institute of Personality Assessment and Research, a series of analyses examining the extent and nature of correspondence between (a) observer descriptions of personality using the California Q-Set and (b) scores on the standard scales of the self-report California Psychological Inventory was performed. The instruments converged in the domains of social competence (vs. interpersonal inadequacy), rectitude (vs. rebellion), intellectual openness, tender-mindedness (vs. tough-mindedness), and emotional expressiveness.

RESUMO

New Narcissism scales for the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) were developed on the basis of DSM-III criteria and the writings of Akhtar and Thomson (1982), Kernberg (1975) and Kohut (1971, 1977). Self-report protocols from 152 adults and 198 college students were utilized. Rationally selected preliminary items were retained or discarded according to their alignment with the total score on these items. The resulting 49-item CPI and 39-item MMPI scales correlated .81 with each other, and significantly so at p less than .01 with ratings of narcissism, the Raskin-Hall Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) and the MMPI Narcissism scale of Morey, Waugh, and Blashfield. Personological implications of the two new scales were examined in relation to other measures and to observers' adjectival and Q-sort descriptions. Intrascale factor analyses identified five common themes: Cathexis of Power, Risk-Seeking Propensity, Need for Attention, Disesteem for Others, and Impatient Willfulness.

RESUMO

Three recently introduced vector scales for the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) were scored for the National Merit Twin Sample and subjected to a heredity-environment analysis. Confidence intervals for genetic and environmental parameters were obtained by a bootstrap method. Two of the scales, Internality (Vector 1) and Self-Realization (Vector 3), showed the substantial heritability and near-zero family environment effects typically found for personality scales, whereas Norm-Favoring (Vector 2) showed an appreciable effect of family environment and a nonsignificant heritability.

RESUMO

Psychological measurement in regard to using drugs, alcohol, or other substances should attend to personological, attitudinal, and informational factors. Standardized tests are available for assessing personological and attitudinal variables, but not for knowledge. To develop a test of information, 45 multiple-choice items were correlated with total and part scores in samples of 132 men and 71 women; 35 items with significant (p less than .05) coefficients and other desirable properties were retained for a Drug and Alcohol Information Survey (DAIS). For 33 male and 36 female college students participating in an intensive psychological assessment program, scores on the DAIS were positively associated with (1) ratings of modernity, sensation seeking, originality, and nonorderliness; (2) personality scales for status propensity, sociability, social presence, and rebelliousness; and (3) a nonverbal test of field-independent cognitive ability. High scorers on the DAIS also reported more frequent use of marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco than did students with low scores.

RESUMO

Classified MMPI profiles of 61 male and 119 female Italian psychiatric outpatients as neurotic (N = 100), psychotic (N = 45), or indeterminate (N = 35) by means of the Meehl-Dahlstrom rules. These classifications were uninfluenced by age or sex. Real and ideal self descriptions on the Adjective Check List (ACL) also were obtained. Thirteen of the 24 ACL scales scored on the real protocols differentiated significantly (P < .05) among the three subgroups. Adequacy of personal adjustment, as inferred from these differences, was poorest for patients with "psychotic" MMPI profiles, next poorest for the indeterminates, and best for those in the neurotic category. Personal Adjustment was the lowest ACL scale for all three subgroups. Only one ideal self scale differentiated significantly among the three subgroups. Also, the ideal self profile for the total sample of 180 patients was almost perfectly correlated with that for a sample of 229 nonpatients. Descriptions of the real self appear to be related systematically and meaningfully to psychiatric status as indicated by the Meehl-Dahlstrom, rules, whereas descriptions of the ideal self are not associated with diagnosis.

RESUMO

Reliable and rational methods of selecting medical students are necessary if valid decisions are to be made concerning each of the enormous number of ap plications to medical school. Not only academic aptitude but also broader sociolegal concerns must be taken into account. The advantages and disadvantages of aptitude tests, reliance on premedical academic achievement, admissions interview and personality tests are considered, and a plea made for heterogeneity and variety among the criteria used to evaluate candidates.

RESUMO

Current medical school admissions criteria favor candidates with superior scientific aptitude and strong interests in scientific subjects. Four measures of this cluster were studied: Medical College Admission Test Science subtest scores, premedical grades in scientific subjects, preference for scientific subjects, and an equally weighted composite of these three. In a sample of 1,135 medical school graduates the four predictors were moderately related to academic performance in the first two years of medical school but almost completely unrelated to performance in the fourth year and to faculty ratings of general and clinical competence. The scientifically oriented graduates tended to enter specialties such as anesthesiology, pathology, and surgery, whereas graduates ranking lower on the overall index showed a slight tendency to prefer internal medicine, pediatrics, and psychiatry. Ratings and adjectival descriptions of premedical students with above average scores on the four measures revealed them to be narrower in interests, less adaptable, less articulate, and less comfortable in interpersonal relationships than their lower scoring peers.

RESUMO

A follow-up survey of 1,087 physicians who had graduated from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine from 1951 through 1971 was completed in 1977. A total of 307 (28.2 percent) of these persons were found to have left California. Comparison of the 307 who left with the 780 who remained showed only slight and statistically insignificant differences on most variables, such as sex, academic performance in premedical and medical education, educational level and social class of parents, age at entry into medical school, ratings by admissions interviewers, choice of specialty and a wide variety of personality inventory measures. Among the variables that did differentiate were place of birth, location and prestige of premedical college, preferences for subjects in the sciences and the humanities, and the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores for quantitative ability and general information. However, attempts to combine these individual differentiators into clusters or equations from which to forecast emigration from California were unsuccessful.

RESUMO

Interpersonal dependency refers to a complex of thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and behaviors revolving around needs to associate closely with valued other people. Its conceptual sources include the psychoanalytic theory of object relations, social learning theories of dependency, and the ethological theory of attachment. A review of existing self-report inventories revealed none that adequately assessed interpersonal dependency. A new 48-item self-report inventory which assesses interpersonal dependency in adults was developed using a sample of 220 normals and 180 psychiatric patients. It was cross-validated on two additional samples. Three components of interpersonal dependency emerged: emotional reliance on another person, lack of social self-confidence, and assertion of autonomy. The relationship of these components with normals and patients was discussed, as well as with the concepts of attachment and dependency.

RESUMO

A total of 248 doctors replied to the question 'About what per cent of your patients present problems that do not really require medical attention (problems that would take care of themselves)?' The answers given ranged from 0 to 90%, with a mean of 20.61 and standard deviation of 23.81 The estimates given by the doctors were related to their own performance as pre-medical and medical students, and to personal qualities and dispositions as indicated by psychological assessment. Doctors whose estimates were higher than the average for the group tended to have better pre-medical scholastic records than their peers, to attain superior scores on the Science subtest of the Medical College Admission Test, and to prefer rational to intuitive methods of problem-solving.

RESUMO

A total of 1,195 students from 11 classes at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine was studied. Of these, 162 were from medical and 1,033 from nonmedical families. Those from medical families were insignificantly different from their classmates on premedical scholastic achievement and Medical College Admission Test scores, but they were slightly younger and attended more prestigious undergraduate colleges. Academic and clinical performance in medical school was equivalent for the two groups. However, long-range consequences in regard to choice of specialty were observable. Psysicians from medical families were more likely than their peers to be in ophthalmology and otorhinolarngoloy, dermatology, and surgery and less likely to be in psychiatry, pediatrics, and obstericsgynecology.

RESUMO

Seven hundred thrity-five male and 93 female physicians indicated the number of children they would like to have; 713 and 89 indicated the number they expected to have. These questionnaire responses were related to demographic, educational, and personality test data gathered while the physicians were in medical school. The strongest predictor of both number of children wanted and expected was the size of the physician's own family of origin. Specialists in obstetrics and gynecology wanted and expected more children than those in other specialties.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: Individual modernity may be defined as a cluster of beliefs and attitudes including progressivism, autonomy, secularism, and a sense of personal efficacy. An 8-item scale to assess this constellation was previously published. The present analysis reports new validational data. Factor analysis showed the scale to be significantly loaded (.74) on a modernity dimension, with minimal loadings (-.14 and -.16) on factors for alienationanomie and authoritarianism. For 60 assessees modernity correlated .35 with criterion u ratings by observers. Interviewers' Q sort and adjectival descriptions of 360 subjects stressed independence and breadth of interests for high-scorers versus conventionality and narrowness of interests for low-scorers. These descriptions also suggested that women ranking high on modernity will be less favorably perceived than men of comparable standing.

RESUMO

A psychometric index of creative potential was devised by relating test scores to ratings of creativity in samples of architects, engineers, mathematicians, psychologists, and research scientists. A correlation of .45 was obtained between scores on this index and the criterion ratings in the total initial sample of 350 men. The tests used to compute scores on the index were also available for 284 first-year medical students being studied as physicians in a longitudinal inquiry on speciality choice and location of practice. The mean creativity score of the medical students was higher than that for any of the other samples. Within the array of means for medical specialty groups, psychiatrists ranked first and internists second. Students who failed to complete medical school also scored high, suggesting that dropping out is not just a matter of poor academic potential or unsuitability for a career in medicine.
