RESUMO

The 21st century has started with several innovations in the medical sciences, with wide applications in health care management. This development has taken in the field of medicines (newer drugs/molecules), various tools and technology which has completely changed the patient management including abdominal surgery. Surgery for abdominal diseases has moved from maximally invasive to minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) surgery. Some of the newer medicines have its impact on need for surgical intervention. This article focuses on the development of these emerging molecules, tools, and technology and their impact on present surgical form and its future effects on the surgical intervention in gastroenterological diseases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Body image concerns are prevalent and are viewed as risk factors for engaging in unhealthy weight control behaviors (UWCBs), such as purging, fasting, and the misuse of laxatives and diet pills. Studies have also linked UWCBs to the development of eating disorders. In the United States (U.S.), sexual minority men (e.g., bisexual, gay, and men who have sex with men) are prone to UWCBs often as a result of societal pressures to achieve certain standards of appearance - of which are often perpetuated through various media platforms. A growing number of studies have explored the possible role mobile dating applications ("dating apps") play in contributing to UWCBs. To our knowledge, such studies have not explored this possible relationship between dating apps and UWCBs in sexual minority men (SMM). To fill this gap in the scientific literature, the present study assessed the association between dating app use and UWCBs and muscle enhancing behaviors among a sample of adult SMM in the U.S. METHOD: 549 SMM participated in an anonymous survey from Qualtrics Survey Panels. UWCBs and muscle enhancing behaviors were assessed through items adapted from national surveys. Body image dissatisfaction was assessed using the Male Body Attitudes Scales. Participants also reported their history of dating app use. We performed descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and student's t-tests. Multivariable logistic regression models assessed the relationship between dating app use and UWCBs and muscle enhancing behaviors. RESULTS: Dating app users had significantly higher body image dissatisfaction scores than non-users. Dating app users also demonstrated significantly elevated odds of engaging in four UWCBs and muscle enhancing behaviors: laxatives, diet pills, muscle-building supplements, and protein powders. CONCLUSIONS: This is one of the first studies to assess dating app use and its association with UWCBs and muscle enhancing behaviors in SMM. Increased surveillance and detection for such behaviors among SMM, particularly those using dating apps, are needed.

RESUMO

Transverse myelitis is a segmental, full-thickness inflammation of the spinal cord with various etiologies including varicella zoster virus infection. Symptoms can manifest as sensory deficits, severe lower back pain radiating down the legs, bowel/bladder incontinence, and extremity weakness. This case report is unique in that it highlights a patient who developed long-segment transverse myelitis after a varicella zoster virus infection which has not been previously reported in the literature.

RESUMO

Necrosis developing 4 weeks after the initial acute pancreatitis attack is known as walled-off pancreatic necrosis (WOPN). Complications of WOPN include spontaneous rupture into the peritoneal cavity or hollow viscus obstruction by compression of surrounding structures, including the colon, stomach, duodenum, and common bile duct. There have also been cases of pseudocyst rupture into blood vessels. This case report is unique in that it highlights a patient with inferior vena cava compression leading to hemodynamic instability due to the mass effect of WOPN and has not been previously reported.

RESUMO

Choledochal cysts are focal or diffuse dilatations of the biliary tree. Its association with the aberrant hepatic duct is rarely reported. We present the case of a 14-year-old girl having aberrant right posterior sectoral duct with choledochal cyst. It can be missed on cholangiography and during surgery, leading to serious complications. In this case, it was diagnosed on magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography and was managed along with cyst excision.
