RESUMO

Average total Hg concentrations measured in muscle of two species of tuna (Thunnus obesus and T. albacares) captured in the Brazilian Equatorial Atlantic Ocean varied from 95 to 1748 ng.g-1 wet weight in T. obesus and 48 to 500 ng.g-1 wet weight in T. albacares. Higher concentrations in T. obesus are probably related to foraging on deep water carnivorous fish. Smaller individuals of both species showed the lowest concentrations, but a significant positive relationship between fish weight and length and Hg concentrations was found for T. obesus, but not for T. albacares. Largest individuals (>30 kg) of T. obesus showed Hg concentrations ≥1000 ng.g-1, surpassing the legal limits for human consumption, although the average concentration for this species was much lower (545 ng.g-1). Concentrations in T. albacares from the Brazilian Equatorial were lower than those found in the African and in the North Atlantic. No comparison could be made for T. obesus due to few studies for this species in the Atlantic Ocean.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical characteristics and outcomes of HIV-1-HTLV-1 coinfected patients, in Bahia, Brazil. METHODS: Retrospective, comparative study. RESULTS: Among a total of 123 consecutive HIV infected patients, 20 men (20.6%) and 6 women (23.1%) had detectable antibodies against HTLV-I/II. The major risk factor associated with coinfection by HTLV was intravenous drug use (57.7% of coinfected patient versus 9.2% of HTLV seronegative patients, p < 0.0001). Coinfected patients had higher absolute lymphocyte counts (1,921 + 762 versus 1,587 + 951, p = 0.03). Both groups of patients had similar means of CD4+ and CD8+ cell counts. However, among patients with AIDS CD4+ cell counts were significantly higher among those coinfected with HTLV-I/II (292 ± 92 cells/mm³, versus 140 ± 177 cells/mm³, p = 0.36). The frequency and type of opportunistic infections were similar for both groups, but strongyloidiasis and encephalopathy were more frequently diagnosed in coinfected patients (p < 0.05). On the other hand, patients coinfected with HTLV-I/II received significantly less antiretroviral therapy than singly infected by HIV-1. CONCLUSION: Coinfection by HTLV-I/II is associated with an increased risk of strongyloidiasis for HIV patients. Higher CD4 count may lead to underestimation of immunodeficiency, and delay to initiate antiretroviral therapy.

RESUMO

The Virchow-Robin spaces (VRS) are subpial invaginations making a tubular revestment scabbard that contains a vase between the subarachnoid and subpial spaces. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the only imaging method able for evaluate this anatomic detail. We studied the possible association between dilated VRS and migraine. Seventy patients with ages ranging from 13 to 54 years (mean, 36.5 years), with clinical diagnosis of migraine were studied and compared with a control group, without past of headache, composed by the same number of patients with ages ranged from 14 to 64 years (mean, 42 years). We observed widening of VRS in 28 cases (40%) of the migraine patients. In the control group this feature was demonstrated in only 5 cases (7.1%). Alert for the importance of detecting and recognizing the VRS, as well as, the differentiation from lacunar infarctions and choroid fissure cysts.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study is to evaluate morphological and signal intensity changes in the hippocampus in patients with medically intractable temporal lobe epilepsy. We studied 8 patients with mesial temporal sclerosis using a 1.5 -T MR and the following sequences Spin Eco- SE, Fast Spin Echo- FSE, Fluid Attenuation Inversion Recovery Echo Planar Imaging--FLAIR-EPI. We noticed a sensitive increase signal intensity on FLAIR- EPI sequences, particularly, in coronal images, than on SE and FSE sequences. The STIR sequence showed a cortical hippocampus atrophy in half of the cases, in whom signal abnormalities were present.

RESUMO

We report a case of sarcoidosis in a 21 years old male with history of headache since he was three years old, with absence of abnormalities in a brain computerized tomography (CT). Brain magnetic resonance (MRI) disclosed a meningeal involvement with intense and homogeneous enhancement of the right fronto-temporal convexity and anterior third of the interhemispheric fissure. The brain MRI is more sensitive than brain CT and is the most appropriate method for the evaluation of meningeal and parenchymatous lesions, as well as monitoring the response to therapy and patients follow up.

RESUMO

We report a casual finding of a sphenoethmoidal meningoencephaloventriculocele in an adult patient that the tomography finding was misinterpreted as an expansive neoplastic lesion with malignant features. We alert for the rare site of localization of this malformative pathology.
