RESUMO

Phytoseiidae is a large family of Mesostigmata mites. Members of this family are important biological control agents across the world since they are well-known natural enemies of phytophagous arthropods on cultivated and non-cultivated plants, mainly used to control pest spider mites. However, some can control thrips in greenhouses and fields. Several studies reporting on species in Latin America have been published. The most extensive studies were conducted in Brazil. Phytoseiid mites have been used in different biological control approaches, with two successful classical biological control programs: the biocontrol of the cassava green mite using Typhlodromalus aripo (Deleon) in Africa and the citrus and avocado mites by Euseius stipulatus (Athias-Henriot) in California. Efforts in using phytoseiid mites to enforce biological control of different phytophagous mites are being made in Latin America. Till now, only a few successful examples are available on this topic. This fact highlights the need to continue the investigations on the ability of other unknown species to be used in biological control through close collaboration between researchers and biocontrol companies. Various challenges remain, such as developing better rearing systems to provide a large number of predators to farmers in various crop systems, training farmers to improve their understanding of the use of predators, and chemical control aimed at conservation biological control, looking forward to increasing the use of the phytoseiid mites as biological control agents in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Predator diversity in a system can have different results on the biological control of pests. Positive results can arise if natural enemies have niche complementarity, whereas negative effects can occur when one enemy interferes with heterospecifics-e.g., via intraguild predation-resulting in weaker pest suppression. Nevertheless, a coexistence is possible if enemies use the resource differentially leading to resource partitioning, and/or if the intraguild prey has some competitive advantage over the intraguild predator-i.e., is better at exploiting the shared resource or exhibits avoidance behavior. In this study, we conducted a series of field-sampling and semifield experiments to elucidate the spatiotemporal association patterns of the coccinellids Eriopis connexa (Germar) and Cycloneda sanguinea L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and determine how the trophic interactions between them could affect the biological control of aphids. We found that both coccinellid species coexist in sweet-pepper crops over time, and this coexistence could be explained by a temporal niche complementarity. Despite cooccurring spatially, they were segregated at the leaf level, which segregation can be explained by an avoidance behavior to prevent negative trophic interactions, such as cannibalism and intraguild predation. Under semifield conditions, the possible negative trophic interactions did not affect the control of aphids when both species were present, but the density of C. sanguinea was reduced at the end of the experiment. These results suggest that biological control strategies that include both species would be positive for the control of aphids on the basis of these considerations.

Antagonistic interactions among predators have the potential to dampen top-down impacts on a shared pest. Strong cannibalism by adults and larvae on eggs along with a stronger intraguild predation by Eriopis connexa on Cycloneda sanguinea (Coccinellidae) than vice versa had been documented. The intensity and direction of these interactions could vary with the larval instar. We calculated aggressiveness, attack, and predation rates between larvae in the laboratory and studied both larval mortality and within-plant distribution in plants. Despite high attack rates, larvae of both species usually escaped from predation, except for the fourth vs. second-instar combinations, where the smaller larvae were more vulnerable to predation than the larger. Successful predation by E. connexa fourth-instars on C. sanguinea second-instars frequently occurred. All interactions between larvae became relaxed when extraguild prey were present. The larval mortality within the plants was influenced by the availability of extraguild prey only. Larvae of both species promptly dispersed outside the plant when prey became unavailable. With the extraguild prey present, the larvae of both species initially preferred the plant upper stratum in both combinations, but then dispersed. This study suggests that the defensive capability and larval dispersal could prevent cannibalism and intraguild-predation interactions.

Laboratory trials were performed to determine the impact of three Neotropical predatory coccinellids (Cycloneda sanguinea, Eriopis connexa and Coleomegilla quadrifasciata) and a minute pirate bug (Orius insidiosus) on Chaetosiphon fragaefolii, an important strawberry aphid pest. The predation on C. fragaefolii nymphs and adults, as well as the time to the first attack of all predators were compared with predation on Aphis gossypii. Predator preferences for prey and aphid defensive behavior were also evaluated. Moreover, the effect of coccinellids on C. fragaefolii population growth was assessed in experimental greenhouse conditions. The predation rate varied among predators, being significantly lower for O. insidiosus than for the coccinellids. Consumption was higher on A. gossypii than on C. fragaefolii, regardless of the aphids developmental stage. The time to the first attack of all predators was longer in the presence of C. fragaefolii. Walking away and cornicle secretion were the most common antipredator behaviors of aphid against coccinellids and O. insidiosus, respectively. Coccinellids preferred A. gossypii over C. fragaefolii, while O. insidiosus showed indifference. Cycloneda sanguinea and E. connexa exhibited the highest suppression effect on the growth rate of C. fragaefolii. Thus, the four predators evaluated could contribute to reduce strawberry aphid populations, especially C. sanguinea and E. connexa.

The availability of oviposition sites for the predators of arthropod pests is crucial for the success of biological control. The resources for oviposition and offspring survival offered to the predators by crops and the surrounding natural vegetation are relevant in the context of conservation biological control. The endophytic oviposition of Orius insidiosus (Say) depends on the characteristics of the plant tissues. We thus examined, by single- and multiple-choice tests, 1) the oviposition of O. insidiosus in strawberry, analyzing the tissue characteristics of the different plant structures, and 2) the preference for oviposition among strawberry, tomato, bell pepper, eggplant, and the wild South-American poppy Bidens pilosa L. (Asterales: Asteraceae). The calyx and flower petiole received more eggs than the other structures. The thickness of the external tissues did not affect oviposition. All structures of the different plants tested offer sufficient space to house eggs, except for the leaflet lamina. Bidens pilosa was preferred by ovipositing O. insidiosus over the other plants tested. The cultivation of this plant in proximity to strawberry and other horticultural crops could constitute a promising strategy for augmenting the resources for oviposition for this predator.

Overwintering and diapause are variable among mite species and strains. The aims of this study were to determine whether certain crops constitute overwintering sites for the Argentine strain of the predator Neoseiulus californicus and whether females underwent reproductive diapause in winter. Neoseiulus californicus was recorded monthly on the vegetables tomato, sweet pepper, eggplant, and artichoke, and on strawberry, among other crops in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. This mite was found at a lower percentage of crops in the winter than in the other seasons. Since the predator was quite frequent on artichoke, this crop could constitute a refuge during adverse environmental conditions. The mite's frequency on several crops in other seasons and potential association with a strawberry pest is discussed. In the laboratory, individuals exposed to winter conditions throughout the life cycle exhibited a long pre-oviposition period and low oviposition rate, but did not diapause. After being kept under winter conditions from larva to adult, when individuals were transferred to the optimal spring temperatures and lighting, the pre-oviposition period was shorter and the fecundity higher than under winter conditions. When individuals remained under spring conditions from larva to adult and were then transferred to the winter parameters during the first 15 days of adulthood, the pre-oviposition period was long and the oviposition rate low. Once the optimal conditions were restored, the daily fecundity became similar to that of the individuals remaining under optimal conditions throughout the life cycle. Fecundity of N. californicus decreased significantly under winter conditions but reproductive diapause was not observed.

Lobiopa insularis is a newly reported pest of strawberry in Argentina. We investigated characteristics of its biology in the laboratory, including survivorship and reproduction. We also estimated population growth for L. insularis fed ripe strawberry fruits. Lobiopa insularis was not observed ovipositing on strawberry fruits. A higher proportion of egg masses were recorded from a depth of 1 cm within the soil than on either the soil surface or deeper than 1cm (i.e. between 1and 2 cm) within the soil. The duration of preimaginal developmental stages represented ~18.5% of the total life cycle, while the adult stage represented 81.5%. Survival from egg to adult was 64.20% and mean longevity of females and males adults was 121.84, (SE = 8.86) and 118.58 (SE = 5.90) days, respectively. Females laid eggs only when they were with a male, so reproductive period was dependent on male presence. The number of eggs/female/day was 18.01 (SE = 1.71); and total fecundity was 1655 (ES = 249.53) eggs/female. The long life span of adults and high reproductive output, i.e high fecundity and long reproductive period, indicate that availability and concentration of suitable developmental resources are important factors in the population dynamics of Lobiopa insularis associated with strawberry crops.

Wild vegetation surrounding crops may provide temporary habitat and potential food sources for phytoseiids in different seasons. Monthly vegetation samples of wild plants adjacent to strawberry plants and wild plants in a vegetation strip close to the crop were taken. The frequency of Neoseiulus californicus, Tetranychus urticae and other mites and insects was recorded. In addition, in a laboratory assay, the survival, developmental time and fecundity of females fed on pollen of strawberry and pollen of wild plants where N. californicus was recorded during their flowering, were estimated. Pollen from Urtica urens, Lamium amplexicaule, Convolvulus arvensis, Sonchus oleraceous, Galega officinalis, and Fragaria x ananassa (strawberry) allowed development of N. californicus to adult, but not reproduction. Survival was 70-80 % when fed on pollen from S. oleraceus, G. officinalis and C. arvensis, 80-90 % when fed on pollen from U. urens and F. x ananassa, and more than 90 % when fed on T. urticae and on pollen from L. amplexicaule. In autumn and winter, U. urens, L. amplexicaule and S. oleraceous could promote the persistence of N. californicus when prey density in strawberry is low, offering T. urticae, thrips and pollen. In summer, pollen of C. arvensis and G. officinalis would contribute to the persistence of N. californicus when the strawberry crop is ending and offers scarce food resources. Although the pollen of these plants would not enable the predator population to increase, the presence of these plants in the vicinity of strawberry could contribute to the persistence of N. californicus population and help to limit T. urticae growth when this pest begins to colonize the crop.

Parasitoid's performance is subject to parasitism decisions influenced by host quality and parasitoid's age. We evaluated parasitism, emergence, and the progeny sex ratio proportions of Telenomus podisi (Ashmead), Trissolcus urichi (Crawford), and Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) females of different age attacking Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), an important soybean pest. Eggs were offered to females of T. podisi 1-10 d old, T. urichi 1, 3, 4, or 6 d old, or T. basalis 1-6 or 8 d old. Average egg parasitism proportions were 0.71 and 0.79 to T. podisi and T. urichi, respectively; and preimaginal survivorship was >97% for both species. Trissolcus basalis females 1, 2, and 3 d old did not parasitize P. guildinii eggs, and high parasitism proportions were recorded from older females, but only 0.5 of females attacked host eggs. A greater proportion of males were produced in the progeny of T. podisi and T. urichi as maternal age increased, but no differences were found in the progeny of T. basalis wasps of different ages. The results from this study indicate that performance of T. podisi and T. urichi would not be affected by the age of the females. However, aging would induce T. basalis females to attack P. guildinii, although it is known that their main host is Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Under certain circumstances, such as shortage of preferred host availability, high egg load, and short life expectancy, this wasp may include P. guildinii as a host.

Icerya purchasi Maskell is a polyphagous scale pest of ornamentals and several other crops. It has two natural specialist enemies that maintain its populations at low levels: Rodolia cardinalis (Mulsant) and Cryptochaetum iceryae (Williston). I. purchasi was recently observed in blueberry crops (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) in Argentina. Seven blueberry fields located in different agricultural landscapes were sampled from July 2006 to September 2008. I. purchasi was present only in the citrus areas of Gobernador Castro, San Pedro, and Concordia. In the last locality, it was present in January 2007, and the abundance was very low. In Buenos Aires, I. purchasi was more abundant in Gobernador Castro where it was present throughout all study period. In San Pedro, it was only registered in August 2007 and March, April, and June 2008. In Gobernador Castro, where the abundance was highest, the dominant crop near blueberries is citrus. The low abundance in San Pedro and Concordia fields may be attributable to the replacement of citrus crops by nonhosts. In Concordia and San Pedro fields, no parasitized I. purchasi were found. In Gobernador Castro, the proportion of adults parasitized was 0.805 +/- 0.286. When the risk of parasitism was analyzed for three density categories, there were no significant differences. R. cardinalis was present only in Gobernador Castro, and very few individuals were observed. The presence and abundance of I. purchasi in blueberry crops in Argentina seems to be linked to the structure of the landscape at the regional level, and the variable incidence of C. iceryae suggests major constraints to the scale's population growth.

The effects of global change and globalization of trade on the biosphere spur an increase in bioinvasions and their subsequent impact on ecosystems. Continental invading bivalves are important because of their impact on artificially-constructed structures. Limnoperna fortunei was first found in the Neotropical region in 1991. Since then it has dispersed upstream in the Plata and Guaíba basins at a rate of 240 km y(-1). This species causes macrofouling in a manner similar to that caused by Dreissena polymorpha. This paper describes the biology of L. fortunei larvae from a hydroelectric power plant in South America. We suggest the importance of knowing the biology of the invading species and the need to consider the settlement patterns and densities of larvae in each of the sectors of the facility in order to achieve a sustainable prevention/control of macrofouling. This study acquires a global significance under the assumption that L. fortunei will eventually invade North America and Europe.

Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) is a promising agent for successful Tetranychus urticae Koch control through conservation techniques, in strawberry crops in La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina). In prey-predator interaction, initial relative densities have an important effect on system dynamics. The economic threshold level (ETL) used for this pest in the present study was 50 active mites per leaflet. In our laboratory experiments, initial T. urticae to N. californicus ratio had a significant effect on the population abundance of T. urticae at a 7-day period. When pest/predator ratio was 5/1 (at initial pest densities from 5 to 15 females/leaflet) the final number of active T. urticae/leaflet was significantly lower than the ETL, while at 20 females/leaflet this number did not differ from the ETL. At 7.5/1 ratio, the final number of active T. urticae/leaflet, at initial pest densities from 5 to 15 females/leaflet, reached the ETL without surpassing it. At 10/1 and 15/1 ratios, pest densities exceeded the ETL only at 15 initial T. urticae/leaflet. Most greenhouse and field observations were consistent with the predictions of a graphical model based on experimental results. This predator was very effective in limiting pest densities at a 7-day period and within the range of pest-predator ratios and absolute densities used in this study. Conservation of N. californicus promoting favorable pest/predator ratios may result in early control of T. urticae.

The Culicoides communities have been analyzed between 1993/1998 in the area influenced by the Yacyret Dam Lake (Paran River, Argentina-Paraguay). Adults of Culicoides were collected monthly by using CDC light traps exposed for 24 h in 9 sampling sites located at both margins of the river; 21 species were recorded. Highest values of species richness were recorded during 1993/1994, being Quiteria and Corpus the sites with the higest number of species (10 and 11, respectively). The species diversity was elevated in Quiteria, Zaim n, Candelaria, Santa Tecla, Capit n Meza and Corpus (Shannon's diversity index 1.0-1.9) while Corate , Ituzaing and Aguapey showed less richness and diversity. The more abundant species were C. insignis, C. venezuelensis, C. leopoldoi, C. limai, C. flinti, C. debilipalpis, C. paraensis and C. guttatus. C. insignis, potential vector of bluetongue virus (BTV) to domestic and wild rumiants in the Neotropical region, is the predominant species in the area and was the only species widely distributed. C. paraensis, a proven vector of Oropouche virus to humans, is a common and abundant species. C. pusillus and C. lahillei, potential vectors of BTV and a filarial parasite, respectively, were occasionally collected. The taxonomic structure of communities was constant during the study period. The occasional species were not characteristic to one particular site and their presence could be related to non-intrinsic conditions.
