RESUMO

A 74-year-old woman with a 4-month history of hoarseness had a granulomatous lesion of the vocal cords by laryngoscopy and a normal physical examination. Wegener's granulomatosis was confirmed by biopsy. Early treatment with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole prevented the evolution toward a more severe systemic form of the disease. The patient remains asymptomatic a year and a half after treatment.

RESUMO

We report a case of inferior turbinate capilar hemangioma in a 12-year-old patient. Clinical and radiological findings are commented and the limited literature up to the present is reviewed. We think that the present publication is opportune because of the patient's age and the nature and origin of the mass. Surgery appears to be the elective treatment in most cases.

RESUMO

A retrospective study was made of 123 cases of nose injury seen in our hospital. Clinical and diagnosis aspects useful for the management of these injuries are discussed. Local inflammation, nosebleed, and deformity were the most common clinical signs. Most injuries were closed and about 80% were fractures. Immediate reduction under local anesthesia was the preferred treatment. The literature was reviewed and the technique is described.

RESUMO

Nocardia asteroides is a bacteria that is distributed widely in nature and produces infection in most organs. Pulmonary nocardiosis is the most common form of clinical presentation. Few references exist regarding ear disease produced by this microorganism. A case of acute otitis media caused by N. asteroides produced subtotal tympanic perforation in a 45-year-old immunocompetent patient. The causal diagnosis was made by pure culture growth, repeated isolation and visualization of the microorganism in Gram-stained specimens of ear exudate. The strain was resistant to cotrimoxazole, but the patient was treated successfully with ciprofloxacin.

RESUMO

We report 2 cases of internal jugular phlebectasia addressed to our ENT-Department for investigation. The sole clinical symptomatology was a latero-cervical right mass expanding with Valsalva's manoeuvre. We make an actualization of the theme's literature and recommend the echography as a method of choice for diagnose, being that technique non-invasive, quick and reproduceable.

RESUMO

Nasal tuberculosis is a rare entity since it early diagnosis and the improvements in treatment. The mucous membrane of the nose is scanty auspicious for this pathology in spite of being an important entrance door for Koch's bacillus. We report one case of nasal tuberculosis without other primary focal point and emphasize the importance of biopsy and the histo-pathological study in order to reach the positive diagnosis and the healing "ad integrum" by means of suitable antibiotic drugs.

RESUMO

Oesophageal perforations due to foreign bodies are a rare pathology with an increased index of complications. Early diagnosis and treatment can reduce the mortality, which accounts for 28 percent. We report 3 cases of oesophageal perforations due to foreign bodies, 2 of them localized at the cervical level and the 3rd, at the end of the thoracic oesophagus, the later ending ominously.

RESUMO

The incidence of retropharyngeal abscess is decreasing since the arrival on semisynthetic penicillins. We report one case of retropharyngeal abscess, after ingestion of a foreign body, in an adult patient, complicated with infective mediastinitis, pleural effusion and pericarditis. The spreading of the infection is able to be explained either by continuity or through the fascial sheets. The usefulness of the CT scan for diagnosis as well for the stretching of the condition is brought out. We underline the anterolateral cervicotomy as the best procedure for surgical drainage of these complications.

RESUMO

We report an interesting case of left tracheobronchial foreign body that occurred in a laryngectomized patient during and episode. The patient had few symptoms because of the location of the foreign body in the tracheobronchial tree. Bronchotomy was used to remove the foreign body. The literature was reviewed for clinical and therapeutic aspects.

RESUMO

We report a case of mucosal melanoma of the nasal cavity, of amelanotic nature, in a fifty five years old white man. Clinical course started with nasal obstruction and bloodstained rhinorrhea. We want to emphasize the extreme uncommonness of this type of tumor, its bad prognosis, and its difficult diagnosis. The treatment offers long term remission to a limited number of patients. For all these reasons, we have carried out a literature search on this topic and this paper shows the results.
