RESUMO

This case series investigates a cluster of deaths in a captive colony of Leschenault's rousettes (Rousettus leschenaultii). Six of seven bats that died between March and September 2021 were diagnosed postmortem with both iron overload (IO) and neoplasia, neither of which have previously been reported in this species. Iron status was assessed via hepatic histopathological grading, hepatic iron concentration, and, in two cases, serum iron concentration. On histopathological grading, all cases had hemochromatosis except one, which had hemosiderosis. Hepatic iron concentrations did not correlate with histopathological grading. Neoplasms in these six bats included hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC; 4), bronchioloalveolar adenocarcinoma (1), pancreatic adenocarcinoma (1), and sarcoma of the spleen and stomach (1). One bat had two neoplasms (HCC and sarcoma of the spleen and stomach). One additional case of HCC in 2018 was identified on retrospective case review. Etiology was investigated to the extent possible in a clinical setting. Nutritional analysis and drinking water testing found oral iron intake within acceptable bounds; however, dietary vitamin C was potentially excessive and may have contributed to IO. Panhepadnavirus PCR testing of liver tissue was negative for all bats. A species-associated susceptibility to IO, as seen in Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus), is possible. The high incidence of HCC is suspected to be related to IO; other differentials include viral infection. Causes or contributing factors were not definitively identified for the other neoplasms seen but could include age, inherited risk (given a high level of inbreeding), or an oncogenic virus. Pending further research in this species, it is recommended that keepers of Leschenault's rousettes offer conservative amounts of vitamin C and iron (as for Egyptian fruit bats), submit for postmortem examination any euthanized or found dead, and share records of similar cases.

Reference intervals for blood biochemical analytes and packed cell volume are useful to veterinarians and conservation programs for monitoring the health of threatened species. Populations of the critically endangered Chinese three-striped box turtle, Cuora trifasciata (Bell, 1825), are heavily depleted in the wild because of overharvesting; and many individuals are now maintained in captive breeding programs. Reference intervals of biochemical analytes and packed cell volume were established for individuals of this species held in a captive breeding program at Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, Hong Kong. Blood samples were obtained from 86 healthy individuals from a captive population during annual health examinations between 2006 and 2010. Packed cell volume and 17 biochemical analytes were measured, and data were analyzed using both multivariate and univariate statistical analyses. Significant differences in eight analytes between males and females were identified. Ten analytes were found to increase or decrease significantly with the body weight of the turtles. The reported plasma reference intervals, based on 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles, may serve as benchmarks for clinical assessment and conservation of this critically endangered species.

RESUMO

Using a pan-astrovirus reverse transcription-PCR assay, a great diversity of novel avastroviruses was detected from wild bird and poultry samples. Two groups of astroviruses detected from wild birds are genetically related or highly similar to previously known viruses in poultry. Most interestingly, a novel group of astroviruses was detected in wild aquatic birds. Our results also reveal that different groups of astroviruses might have difference host ranges. This study has expanded our understanding regarding avastrovirus ecology.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the relative efficacy of the green pit viper antivenom from Thailand and Agkistrodon halys antivenom from China. DESIGN. In-vivo experimental study. SETTING: A wildlife conservation organisation, a university, a poison information centre, and a regional hospital in Hong Kong. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Pre- and post-antivenom lethal dose 50 (LD50) of the Cryptelytrops albolabris venom, median effective dose (ED50) of green pit viper antivenom and Agkistrodon halys antivenom against a lethal dose of the venom. SUBJECTS. Adult mice. RESULTS: The intraperitoneal LD50 of the venom from locally caught Cryptelytrops albolabris was 0.14 microL. After post-exposure treatment with 10 microL of antivenom, it was elevated to 0.36 microL and 0.52 microL by the green pit viper antivenom and the Agkistrodon halys antivenom, respectively. The ED50 was 32.02 microL for green pit viper antivenom and 6.98 microL for Agkistrodon halys antivenom. Both green pit viper antivenom and Agkistrodon halys antivenom ameliorated the lethality of Cryptelytrops albolabris venom in mice. CONCLUSION: The overall superior neutralisation capacity of Agkistrodon halys antivenom over green pit viper antivenom may be related to the geographic proximity of the venoms used for antivenom preparation. The results point towards the need for further comparison of the two antivenoms on protein or immunoglobulin weight basis, and with respect to non-lethal clinically significant toxicities.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the pattern of oral bacterial flora and their sensitivity to antibiotics in freshly captured native snakes in Hong Kong SAR, People's Republic of China. METHODS: Healthy native snakes were captured and kept in a designated centre. Snake species were identified by experienced herpetologists. Mouth swabs were taken by the veterinarian using strict aseptic techniques. The snakes were released back to the wild immediately after the above procedure. Swabs were sent for microbiological studies of bacterial culture and antibiotic sensitivity. RESULTS: 47 venomous snakes of the families Colubridae, Elapidae and Viperidae and 53 non-medically important snakes were captured. 406 bacterial isolates of 72 different species were cultured: these included gram negative and positive bacterial species and also anaerobic bacterial species. With the exception of the white-lipped pit viper (Cryptelytrops albolabris), venomous snakes harboured more pathogenic bacteria and total bacteria species compared to the non-medically important species. Of the venomous snakes, the Chinese cobra (Naja atra) harboured the largest number of bacterial species. In the present study, all gram negative bacteria associated with wound infection were sensitive to levofloxacin, netilmicin and piperacillin/tazobactam. Many gram negative bacteria in the study were not sensitive to cefuroxime axetil. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid was an appropriate choice to cover Enterococcus faecalis and anaerobes. CONCLUSION: In the presence of wound infection from snakebite injury in Hong Kong, first line empirical antibiotics include amoxicillin/clavulanic acid plus levofloxacin. Prophylactic antibiotics may be considered in selected cases of Chinese cobra (N. atra) bite, otherwise prophylactic antibiotics are not recommended in snakebite unless tissue necrosis is present.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the oral bacterial flora associated with two common local venomous snakes in Hong Kong, namely the Chinese cobra (Naja atra) and the bamboo pit viper (Trimeresurus albolabris). DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: A non-government organisation and a regional hospital in Hong Kong. SUBJECTS: Thirty-two Chinese cobras and seven bamboo pit vipers. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Species identification of bacteria in the oral cavity of both snakes and their antibiotic susceptibilities. RESULTS: The oral cavity of Chinese cobra harbour a wide range of pathogenic bacteria, including: Gram-negative bacterial species like Morganella morganii, Aeromonas hydrophila and Proteus, and Gram-positive bacteria like Enterococcus faecalis, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus as well as anaerobic species (clostridia). The oral cavity of the Chinese cobra is more likely than that of the bamboo pit viper to harbour pathogenic bacteria associated with snakebite infection (P<0.001). The median number of pathogenic bacteria per snake was significantly higher in the Chinese cobra (P<0.001). All pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria isolated were susceptible to levofloxacin. Amoxicillin/clavulanate provided good coverage against pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis) and anaerobes. CONCLUSION: 'Prophylactic' antibiotic treatment for Chinese cobra bites may be beneficial, owing to the multiple pathogenic bacteria in its oral cavity and the higher risk of ensuing necrosis. The regimen of levofloxacin plus amoxicillin/clavulanate appears promising for this purpose, but further study is required to confirm its clinical utility in patients.

RESUMO

A wild-caught black-eared kite (Milvus migrans) was presented with a fracture of the right fibula and tibiotarsus that was repaired using combined crossed pins and a rigid cast technique. The fracture healed well; however, because the bird was not able to regain full use of its legs, radiographs were taken, which revealed a translucent structure involving the vertebral bodies of the notarium-synsacrum area. The condition of the bird deteriorated over the following days, and it was euthanized. Postmortem examination confirmed two bony intumescences involving the last vertebra of the notarium and the synsacrum. The vertebral canal, on a cut surface, was restricted, and the spinal cord was compressed.
