RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective To compare resting metabolic rate values determined by indirect calorimetry with values estimated using different predictive equations in lean and overweight postmenopausal women. Methods Twenty-four women, who had stopped menstruating for at least two years, were subjected to anthropometric measurements and indirect calorimetry after 12-hour overnight fasting to determine, mathematically and experimentally, resting metabolic rate values. Results There was no difference in the indirect calorimetry values between the groups evaluated. Difference values of resting metabolic rate were obtained with all equations used. For the lean women, there was no difference between the values obtained by indirect calorimetry and those estimated using the equations proposed by Food and Agricultural Organization, Fredix, Lazzer, and Schofield. However, in the overweight group, the resting metabolic rate values estimated using the Institute of Medicine, Berstein and Owen equations were different from those obtained by indirect calorimetry. Conclusion This study suggests that differences in body composition in postmenopausal women influence the accuracy of predictive equations, demonstrating the need for more accurate estimation methods for resting metabolic rate in postmenopausal women with different body compositions.


RESUMO Objetivo Comparar os valores de taxa metabólica de repouso determinados por calorimetria indireta com os valores obtidos utilizando diferentes equações preditivas em mulheres pós-menopausicas eutróficas e com sobrepeso. Métodos Vinte e quatro mulheres com pelo menos dois anos de menopausa foram submetidas à avaliações antropométricas e à calorimetria indireta após 12 horas de jejum para determinar, matematicamente e experimentalmente, a taxa metabólica de repouso. Resultados Os valores para calorimetria indireta não diferiram entre os grupos e a taxa metabólica de repouso predita por equações foi diferente para todas as equações usadas. Para o grupo de eutróficas, as equações que não foram estatisticamente diferentes da calorimetria indireta foram Food and Agricultural Organization, Fredix, Lazzer e Schofield. No entanto, apenas as equações Berstein e Owen foram significativamente diferentes comparadas com calorimetria indireta para o grupo sobrepeso. Conclusão O presente estudo sugere que diferenças na composição corporal em mulheres na pós-menopausa modificam a precisão de equações que predizem a taxa metabólica de repouso, demonstrando a necessidade de aprimorar métodos de estimação de taxa metabólica de repouso em mulheres pós-menopáusicas com diferentes composições corporais.

BACKGROUND: Since exercise increases the production of reactive oxygen species in different tissues, the objective of this study is to evaluate, compare and correlate the acute effects of aerobic and resistance exercise in circulatory markers of oxidative stress and acylated ghrelin (AG) in postmenopausal women. METHODS: Ten postmenopausal women completed different protocols: a control session (CON), an aerobic exercise session (AERO); and a single-set (SSR) or 3-set (MSR) resistance exercise protocol. RESULTS: After exercise, both MSR (P = .06) and AERO (P = .02) sessions showed significant increased lipid peroxidation compared with baseline levels. CON and SSR sessions showed no differences after exercise. No differences were found between sessions at any time for total glutathione, glutathione dissulfide or AG concentrations. CONCLUSIONS: Exercise significantly increased lipid peroxidation compared with baseline values. As pro oxidant stimuli is necessary to promote chronic adaptations to the antioxidant defenses induced by exercise, our findings are important to consider when evaluating exercise programs prescription variables aiming quality of life in this population.

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of 11 weeks of low-volume resistance training (LVRT) and high-volume resistance training (HVRT) on muscle strength, muscle thickness (MT), and postprandial lipaemia (PPL) in postmenopausal women. Thirty-six healthy and untrained postmenopausal women (age, 58.9 ± 5.8 years; 68.6 ± 10.3 kg; and BMI, 26.9 ± 4.8 kg · m(-2)) participated in resistance training 3× per week for 11 weeks (HVRT = 12; LVRT = 13; and control group = 11). Biochemical variables, both pretraining and post-training, were evaluated 16 h after the administration of an oral fat tolerance test (OFTT) and metabolic variable during [energy expenditure (EE)] and after training session [excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC)]. Muscle strength (1 RM) and MT were also calculated, and no significant differences were observed between the groups for PPL (mmol · L(-1) per 5 h) as measured by glucose, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and total cholesterol. EE total (EE + EPOC; 6.12 ± 1.21 MJ vs. 2.26 ± 0.85 MJ), resting fat oxidation (5.52 ± 1.69 g · h(-1) vs. 4.11 ± 1.12 g · h(-1)); MT (vastus medialis, 21.4 ± 1.8 mm vs. 18.4 ± 1.2 mm and vastus lateralis 22.3 ± 1.2 mm vs. 20.8 ± 1.3 mm); triacylglycerol (TAG) 0, 1, 2, 4; and 5 h after OFTT, TAG area under the curve (AUC) (5.79 ± 0.42 vs. 7.78 ± 0.68), and incremental AUC (-46.21 ± 14.42% vs. 7.78 ± 4.68%) were all significantly different post-training for HVRT versus LVRT, respectively (P < 0.05). The results of this investigation suggest that HVRT reduces PPL in postmenopausal women.

The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of resistance exercise sessions (RESs) performed at different levels of high-volume resistance exercise (HVRE) and low-volume resistance exercise (LVRE) on postprandial lipemia (PPL) in postmenopausal women. Thirty-nine healthy unconditioned postmenopausal women (59.5 ± 4.8 years of age, body mass 69.6 ± 9.1 kg, height 157.9 ± 7.2 cm, BMI 27.6 ± 4.1 kg m(-2), waist circumference 76.1 ± 9.7 cm, VO2max 18.7 ± 1.4 mL kg(-1) min(-1)) were assigned to a LVRE (n = 12), HVRE (n = 14), and control group (CG, n = 13). Experimental groups performed one RES involving eight exercises. The HVRE group performed three sets with a maximum of 15 repetitions, and the LVRE group performed one set with a maximum of 15 repetitions. Approximately 16 h after a RES, all of the groups were given an oral fat tolerance test (OFTT). During the RES, we evaluated the energy expenditure (EE) of the resistance session and excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC); following the RES and the OFTT, we evaluated lipid profiles (total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides). While the study groups did not demonstrate significant differences in lipid profiles, the total energy expenditure (EE + EPOC) of the session exercise treatments was significantly higher for HVRE than for LVRE (0.60 ± 0.12 and 0.31 ± 0.11 MJ, respectively, p < 0.001). Different levels of resistance exercise do not lower basal triglyceride concentration and postprandial lipid profile parameters at approximately 16 h following resistance exercise in untrained postmenopausal women.
