[Occupational dermatoses in Poland 1986-1988]. / Choroby zawodowe skóry w Polsce w latach 1986-1988.

An attempt of the epidemic analysis of skin occupational diseases in Poland from 1986 till 1988 has been made against the background of the general occupational pathology. The attention has been paid to the adjustment of the occupational dermatosis definition to the requirements of dermatological practice. The paper has presented the geography of skin occupational diseases (branches of industry, voivodeships) and their occurrence according to age, sex and time of exposure. Some conclusions aiming at the improvement of skin occupational diseases notification have been drawn.

The work-related dermatological situation in Poland is presented based upon all cases of occupationally derived illnesses and supported by the statistical data, from the period 1985-1986.

The results of clinical treatment of a non-typical and specific skin disease are presented. The disease results from penetration of tiny glass needles into skin of the workers in a fluorescent lamp factory. The non-visible penetration of glass needles into skin is underlined and the possibility of applying radiological tests to detect these elements is discussed. The presence of glass needles in the skin, in various depths 10 or 15 years after penetration has been revealed by means of control tomograph tests.

The vibration syndrome includes the frequently observed polysystemic symptom complex, and also encompasses dermatological symptoms as well. Under conditions where vibration and noise exceed the acceptable norms, a very high illness index must be reckoned with. Aside from the characteristic symptoms in the periphery and the vascular and bone systems, numerous symptoms in the central nervous system (still not recognised as occupational disease) have been diagnosed. The present study was carried out by the Cracaw Medical Academy, Poland, who performed medical examinations on the employees of large companies. The results of these examinations are linked to pathogenic vibration. Because of these findings, new recommendations were made concerning changes needed in prophylactic examinations.

786 occupational dermatoses notification in Poland have been analysed. The significance of the compounds of chromium, cobalt, oils, lubricants, cement, epidians and epoxy resins in the pathogenesis of occupational dermatoses has been presented. The recommended "set of 5 allergens" is sufficient to explain the cause of about half of the diseases. Epidemiological data on occupational dermatoses confirm the advisability of adopting the author's criteria of handling occupational dermatoses and considering the possibilities of certain technological improvements.
