In organic light-emitting diode (OLED), achieving high efficiency requires effective triplet exciton confinement by carrier-transporting materials, which typically have higher triplet energy (ET) than the emitter, leading to poor stability. Here, an electron-transporting material (ETM), whose ET is 0.32 eV lower than that of the emitter is reported. In devices, it surprisingly exhibits strong confinement effect and generates excellent efficiency. Additionally, the device operational lifetime is 4.9 times longer than the device with a standard ETM, 1,3,5-tri(1-phenyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl) phenyl (whose ET 0.36 eV is higher than the emitter). This anomalous finding is ascribed to the exceptionally long triplet state lifetime (≈0.2 s) of the ETM. It is named as long-lifetime triplet exciton reservoir effect. The systematic analysis reveals that the long triplet lifetime of ETM can compensate the requirement for high ET with the help of endothermic energy transfer. Such combination of low ET and long lifetime provides equivalent exciton confinement effect and high molecular stability simultaneously. It offers a novel molecular design paradigm for breaking the dilemma between high efficiency and prolonged operational lifetime in OLEDs.

Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are typically solid, sometimes with small cystic areas, but rarely manifest as predominantly cystic neoplasms. In addition, cystic intestinal GISTs with intratumoral abscess formation are rare. Case presentation: We present the case of a 49-year-old male patient with a history of frequent and urgent urination for 2 weeks. Radiologic studies revealed a large cystic mass in the lower abdomen. The patient underwent abdominal laparotomy, which revealed a large cystic mass arising from the distal ileum invading the sigmoid mesocolon and apex vesicae. Partial resection of the ileum along with the tumor and the adjacent bladder was performed. Macroscopic examination revealed that the cystic mass contained a large amount of foul-smelling pus and a tumor-bowel fistula. The final pathology revealed an abdominal stromal tumor. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, and adjuvant imatinib mesylate 400 mg was administered daily. No tumor recurrence or metastasis was observed during the 9-month follow-up period. Conclusion: Fingings of a cystic tumor in the abdomen should raise concern for cystic GISTs. This case report reviews a rare presentation of an ileal giant cystic GIST with atypical intratumoral abscess formation. Complete surgical resection and adjuvant imatinib is still the mainstay treatment for GISTs.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic values of serum miR-331-3p and miR-23b-3p as tumor markers for the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) at early stage. METHODS: A total of 191 subjects were enrolled and consisted of 45 healthy controls (HC), 106 hepatitis c virus (HCV)-related chronic liver disease (CLD) patients, and 40 early-stage HCC patients. CLD patients were subdivided according to Metavir fibrosis-scoring. Serum miR-331-3p and miR-23b-3p were measured. The area under curves (AUC) was calculated for each microRNA and compared with that for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in the detection of HCC at early stage. RESULTS: Serum miR-331-3p was significantly higher in early-stage HCC than that in CLD and HC respectively, and it decreased significantly after surgery in early-stage HCC. Contrarily, serum miR-23b-3p was significantly lower in early-stage HCC and increased significantly after surgery. Further, receiver operating characteristic analysis demonstrated AUC was 0.806 (95%CI: 0.728-0.883; sensitivity: 85.85%, specificity: 65.00%) for serum miR-23b-3p in discriminating early-stage HCC from CLD patients, higher than that for AFP (AUC:0.660, 95%CI: 0.556-0.764; sensitivity: 70.00%, specificity: 56.60%). In discrimination early-stage HCC from severe fibrosis/cirrhosis (F3 + F4) patients, both miR-23b-3p (AUC: 0.796, 95%CI: 0.703-0.889; sensitivity: 85.11%, specificity: 65.00%) and miR-331-3p (AUC:0.832, 95%CI: 0.812-0.953; sensitivity: 75.00%, specificity: 85.11%) had better diagnostic performances than AFP (AUC:0.632, 95%CI: 0.512-0.753; sensitivity: 50.00%, specificity: 55.32%). Serum miR-331-3p levels also showed a significant correlation with BCLC stages of HCC. CONCLUSION: Serum miR-331-3p and miR-23b-3p could be used as novel invasive biomarkers in the early detection of HCC in high-risk patients.
