RESUMO

Loess regions face significant challenges in quantifying hydrological processes and assessing geological environmental risks due to the prevalent development of preferential pathways and the limitations of existing monitoring technologies. To advance this knowledge, this study presents an improved electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) device, specifically designed for loess moisture observations. By refining the testing principle, power supply mode, and data collection method within the existing ERT framework, the new device offers unmanned operation, automatic data acquisition, remote transmission, and cost efficiency. It effectively tracks water movement and groundwater level fluctuations across various hydrological conditions, supporting long-term online monitoring of hydrological processes of loess slopes. Through the analysis of monitoring data and classification of 12 observed preferential flow types, water movement in loess systems can be generalized into four general patterns: uniform infiltration, preferential infiltration, inflowing diffusion, and lateral flow. This generalized scheme provides a simplified modeling approach for other researchers to quantify slope hydrodynamics and to assess geological safety risks involving preferential flow. Based on these insights and field investigations, a conceptual framework is proposed to elucidate the seepage-structure synergistic initiating mechanism of loess landslides. This framework suggests that water entry and movement patterns within the slope depend on the slope geological structure related to preferential pathways and the prevailing hydrological scenarios. Landslide occurs as the result of the progressive failure and reciprocal evolution between the slope hydrological environments and geological structure, which may also pose potential eco-hydrological risks. The outcome advances the development of slope hydrological monitoring technology and enhances the understanding of water movement laws and the associated geological environmental risks in loess slope systems, which is of vital importance to the early warning methods of loess landslides that account for preferential flow and for theoretical modeling of preferential flow in related disciplines.

RESUMO

Under the condition of small roof deformation before the occurrence of fractures and collapse in room and pillar mined-out areas caused by coal pillar instability, the surface deformation may be large, which threatens the safety of ground structures. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar, geophysical exploration, geotechnical exploration and physical simulation tests were conducted to analyse the deformation and development mechanism of the overlying strata in the mined-out area in this case. The results show that in terms of surface deformation, the surface deformation caused by coal pillar instability in the room and pillar mined-out area exhibits the slow deformation stage, uniform deformation stage and accelerated deformation stage. In terms of deformation of overlying strata, after the completion of room and pillar mining, a strip-shaped deformation area and trapezoidal deformation area are developed in the overlying rock. With the occurrence of coal pillar instability, a trapezoidal deformation area and inverted funnel-shaped deformation area are developed in the overlying rock. The deformation characteristics of unconsolidated formations transition from trapezoidal deformation after room and pillar mining to funnel-shaped deformation due to coal pillar instability. Moreover, the maximum surface deformation point is located at the centre of the funnel. In terms of spatial morphology of mined-out area deformation, the maximum surface deformation point corresponds to the position of the initial coal pillar instability and the crack in the mined-out area roof along the vertical direction. The mined-out area treatment method can be optimized based on the deformation characteristics of the overlying strata in the room and pillar mined-out area under the condition of coal pillar instability.

RESUMO

Odor emissions from sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants have attracted much attention due to the potential negative effects on human health. A single-chamber membrane-free microbial electrolysis cell was proposed for the removal of sulfides in a sewer system. The feasibility of the use of volatile sulfur compounds and their removal efficiency in liquid and headspace gas phases were investigated using synthetic wastewater with real sewer sediment and Ru/Ir-coated titanium electrodes. The results indicate that hydrogen sulfide and volatile organic sulfur compounds were effectively inhibited in the liquid phase upon electrochemical treatment at current densities of 1.55, 2.06, and 2.58 mA/cm2, and their removal rates reached up to 86.2-100%, except for dimethyl trisulfide, the amount of which increased greatly at 1.55 mA/cm2. In addition, the amount of volatile sulfur compounds in the headspace decreased greatly; however, the total theoretical odor concentration was still high, and methanethiol and ethanethiol greatly contributed to the total strength of the odor concentration due to their low odor threshold concentrations. The major pathway for sulfide removal in the single-chamber membrane-free microbial electrolysis cell is biotic oxidation, the removal rate of which was 0.4-0.5 mg/min, 4-5 times that of indirect electrochemical oxidation.

RESUMO

Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been applied to remediate heavy metal pollution effectively in practice. However, the heavy metal release from CWs has not been paid enough attention. In this study, a 5-month experiment was carried out with three parallel lab-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) with zeolites as fillers. The artificial rainwater was pumped into VFCWs to study the release characteristic and mechanisms of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, and Pb). The results showed that significant amounts of Zn and Cu were released from the VFCWs at the end of the experiment while Pb and Cr rarely escaped. The upper layer (0-30 cm) of the VFCWs was the most effective area for heavy metal removal due to the presence of sediments, but it was also the most active area for heavy metal release. To explain this result, the sediments were analyzed before and after being leached by the tap water. The results indicated that Zn and Cu existed mainly in the exchangeable state, and they had strong leachability and bioavailability, causing its releases. Also, competitive adsorption of different metals meant that the metal ions with strong adsorption to zeolite caused the metal ions with weak adsorption to be desorbed from zeolites, and thus, a large amount of Zn escaped from VFCWs. The escape of heavy metals from CWs illustrated that it should be paid more attention in the management.

RESUMO

The addition of chemical agents to control the production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is currently the principal technology used to control odor emissions from sewers. In this study, laboratory reactors were used to investigate the change in dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) concentrations when dosing with oxidant to control sulfide in sewers. Our results show that the intermittent addition of oxidant leads to sulfide regeneration and increased DMTS formation. Additional experiments were conducted to investigate the processes that result in the formation of DMTS. The results indicate that the polysulfide produced after oxidant addition was a key intermediate in DMTS production. Enzymatic methylation of polysulfide was an important process in DMTS formation. Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) was observed in the reactor when oxidant was again added but it was reduced to DMTS when the oxidant was depleted. There are side-effects of adding oxidant, and alternative control measures for volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) need to be investigated further.
