OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a peer support intervention on the quality of life (QOL), self-management, self-efficacy, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and depression in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: A systematic review was conducted by searching 10 databases, namely PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Embase, Medline, CINHAL, Web of Science, Sinomed, CNKI, WanFang Data, and VIP for articles published from January 1974 to April 2023. RESULTS: A total of 12 studies were included. A narrative synthesis of the results showed that peer support significantly improved QOL, self-management, self-efficacy, and HbA1c control in patients with T2DM, but had no significant effect on depression. CONCLUSION: Peer support is an effective intervention for individuals with T2DM. Future research should focus on more rigorously designed and larger-sample studies. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Peer support proves to be effective for managing patients with T2DM. Current peer support interventions can provide valuable ideas that can guide the direction of future research.

This study aimed to analyze the safety and applicability of a 90-min duration of infusion (SDI) of obinutuzumab in patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in a tertiary hospital in China. This exploratory clinical trial was performed at Jiangsu Province Hospital. All patients were treated with the standard infusion regimen for the first infusion. If no grade ≥3 infusion-related reactions (IRRs) occurred, the subsequent infusions were given as SDI. The primary endpoint was the incidence of IRR during the standard infusion (3-4 h) and 90-min SDI regimens. This study enrolled 208 patients and all completed cycle 1. Forty-one patients (19.71%) had IRRs: five (2.40%) with grade 1, twenty-eight (13.46%) with grade 2, and eight (3.85%) with grade 3. The 41 patients had 71 IRRs, mainly fever (40.85%), chest pain/tightness (12.68%), and dyspnea (9.86%). The occurrence of IRRs in the first infusion was significantly lower in patients who received oral acetaminophen prophylaxis than those who did not (10.72% vs 30.21%, P<0.001). For the subsequent cycles with 90-min SDI, only two (0.25%) IRRs occurred among 814 infusions (one grade 1 hand numbness and one grade 2 chill/fever). The 90-min obinutuzumab SDI might be safe and feasible in patients with B-cell NHL in China.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive frailty (CF) is currently a significant issue, and most of the associated factors discovered in current studies are not modifiable. Therefore, it is crucial to identify modifiable risk factors that can be targeted for interventions in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and modifiable risk factors of CF in CHF patients in China. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we sequentially enrolled patients diagnosed with CHF. CF served as the dependent variable, assessed through the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) Scale and the FRAIL Scale. The independent variable questionnaire encompassed various components, including general demographic information, the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), the Simplified Nutrition Appetite Questionnaire (SNAQ), the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ). Logistic regression analysis was employed to identify independent factors contributing to CF. RESULTS: A total of 271 patients with CHF were included in the study. The overall prevalence of CF was found to be 49.4%, with 28.8% of patients exhibiting potentially reversible cognitive frailty and 20.7% showing reversible cognitive frailty. Among middle-young CHF patients, 10.7% had reversible cognitive frailty and 6.4% had potentially reversible cognitive frailty, with a prevalence of CF at 17.1%. Logistic regression analysis revealed that body mass index (OR = 0.826, 95%CI = 0.726-0.938), blood pressure level (OR = 2.323, 95%CI = 1.105-4.882), nutrition status (OR = 0.820, 95%CI = 0.671-0.979), and social support (OR = 0.745, 95%CI = 0.659-0.842) were independent factors associated with CF (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We observed a relatively high prevalence of CF among Chinese patients diagnosed with CHF. Many factors including BMI, blood pressure level, nutrition status, and social support emerging as modifiable risk factors associated with CF. We propose conducting clinical trials to assess the impact of modifying these risk factors. The outcomes of this study offer valuable insights for healthcare professionals, guiding them in implementing effective measures to improve the CF status in CHF patients during clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Bath is an external stimulus for preterm infants. Currently, three methods are used for preterm infants to bath. It is important to choose the best way for them. The objective of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the effectiveness of different bath methods on physiological indexes and behavioral status of preterm infants. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses [PRISMA] guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO(CRD42022377657). PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL, Sino Med, China National Knowledge Internet (CNKI) and Wan-Fang database were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials on the effects of different bath methods for preterm infants. The retrieval time was from the establishment of the database to February 2023. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the literature was screened, quality evaluated and the data was extracted. Reman Version 5.4 was used for meta-analysis and Stata 16.0 software for publication bias Egger's test. RESULTS: A total of 11 RCTs with 828 preterm infants were included. The results of meta-analysis showed that the body temperature and oxygen saturation of preterm infants in the sponge bath group were lower than those in conventional tub bath group (SMD = -0.34; 95%CI -0.56 to -0.12; I2 = 0; p < 0.01), (MD = -0.39; 95%CI -0.76 to -0.02; I2 = 39%; p = 0.04), while the heart rates were higher than those in conventional tub bath group(MD = 5.90; 95%CI 0.44 to 11.35; I2 = 61%; p = 0.03). Preterm infant's body temperature and blood oxygen saturation of in swaddle bath group were higher than those in conventional tub bath group (MD = 0.18; 95%CI 0.05 to 0.30; I2 = 88%; p < 0.01), (MD = 1.11; 95%CI 0.07 to 2.16; I2 = 86%; p = 0.04), respiratory rates were more stable compared with infants in conventional tub bath group (MD = -2.73; 95%CI -3.43 to -2.03; I2 = 0; p < 0.01). The crying duration, stress and pain scores of preterm infants in swaddle bath group were lower than those in conventional tub bath group (SMD = -1.64; 95CI -2.47 to -0.82; I2 = 91%; p < 0.01), (SMD = -2.34; 95%CI -2.78 to -1.91; I2 = 0; p < 0.01), (SMD = -1.01; 95%CI -1.40 to -0.62; I2 = 49%; p < 0.01). Egger's test showed no publication bias in body temperature, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and crying duration. CONCLUSIONS: Swaddle bath is the best bathing method than conventional tub bath and sponge bath in maintaining the stability of preterm infant's body temperature, blood oxygen saturation and respiratory rate. In addition, swaddle bath also plays a role in reducing cry duration, stress scores, and pain levels of preterm infant compared with conventional tub bath and sponge bath. However, due to the important heterogeneity in some outcomes, future studies with larger sample size and more appropriately design are needed to conduct before recommendation. Objective: To explore the risk factors of muscle calf venous thrombosis (MCVT) after craniotomy and construct a risk prediction model, so as to provide tool for evaluating the prognosis of MCVT after craniotomy. Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed on the data of patients undergoing craniotomy complicated with MCVT from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2020. A prediction model was established by Logistic regression, and the predictive efficacy of the model was tested by ROC curve. The accuracy of the risk model was evaluated by Hosmer-Lemeshow (H-L) test, and the model was verified internally by cross validation. Results: Among the 446 patients who underwent craniotomy complicated with MCVT, 112 cases (25.11%) had thrombosis extension. D-dimer, Capirini scores, length of hospital stay, malignant tumor, fracture, use of dehydrating agents and hemostatic agents were independently related to thrombosis extension after craniotomy. The area under ROC curve (AUROC) of the prediction model was 0.918 (0.888, 0.942), and the sensitivity and specificity of the maximum Youden index were 85.3% and 78.2%, respectively. H-L test showed that the prediction model was accurate (χ 2 = 12.426, P = 0.133). The internal verification results of the prediction model showed that the AUROC value of the prediction model is 0.892. Conclusion: The prediction model has a good prediction efficacy on the prognosis of post-craniotomy patients complicated with MCVT, and can be used as a tool to evaluate the risk of thrombosis extension.

BACKGROUND: Improving patient activation can lead to better health outcomes among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, no studies have focused on the issue of activation in patients with COPD in China. PURPOSE: This study was designed to explore the status of activation in patients with COPD in China and explicate the significant influencing factors. METHODS: One hundred seventy patients with COPD were recruited using a convenience sampling method from eight tertiary and secondary hospitals in Nanjing, China. Sociodemographic, clinical, and patient-reported factor data were collected. Univariate analysis and multivariate linear regression were performed. RESULTS: Only 10.6% of the patients were identified as activated for self-management. Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed four explanatory elements as significantly associated with patient activation, including social support (ß = .463, p < .001), free medical insurance (ß = .173, p = .007), smoking status (ß = -.195, p = .002), and health status (ß = -.139, p = .04). CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The findings of this study indicate that a minority of patients with COPD are activated for self-management in China. Having a higher level of patient activation was associated with having better social support, having free medical insurance, being a nonsmoker, and having a better health status. Creating a supportive environment, promoting smoking cessation, and improving medical security and health status may be considered as potential strategies to activate patients into better self-management.

AIMS: This study aimed to determine the extent to which nurses report assessing evidence-based falls risk factors and implementing targeted prevention for medical and surgical patients in China. DESIGN: This study was a national online survey. METHODS: The respondents were registered nurses working in medical and surgical units in 662 Chinese hospitals. The data concerning the falls risk factor assessments and targeted interventions implemented by nurses were collected online by the Nursing Management Committee of the Chinese Nursing Association in China in 2019. RESULTS: In total, 68 527 valid questionnaires were returned (95.0%). In medical and surgical units, nurses were most likely to report assessing balance, mobility and strength (81.6%) and orthostatic hypotension (76.4%) in falls patients and least likely to report assessing continence (61.3%) and feet and footwear (55.8%). Ensuring the use of appropriate footwear (79.3%) and managing syncope, dizziness and vertigo (73.8%) were the most common multiple interventions, while managing postural hypotension (48.8%) and cognitive impairment (48.4%) was the least common. Nine falls risk factors with clearly matched multifactorial interventions were identified in medical and surgical units (68.2%-97.1%). CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of multifactorial interventions in medical and surgical wards is inconsistent as reported by nurses in medical and surgical wards. Throughout China, nurses are generally concerned about falls risk factors and prevention for their patients; however, limited attention has been focused on continence, feet and footwear assessment and the management of cognitive impairment. Evidence-based falls prevention should be further tailored to the specific risk factors of each patient. IMPACT: Best practice guidelines for falls prevention in hospitals have been developed and published, and it is important for nurses to use these guidelines to guide practice. Our findings identify that in routine care, healthcare providers and hospitals can prevent falls.

OBJECTIVE: C-reactive protein (CRP) is a powerful predictor of and risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, the relationship between CRP and sudden death (SD) is controversial. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between CRP and SD. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of the databases of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, Wanfang, CNKI, China Biology Medicine disc, and Weipu. Two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and evaluated the data quality. The overall effect size was meta-analyzed using Stata software version 12.0 (StataCorp, College Station, TX, USA). RESULTS: Twelve prospective studies involving 36,646 patients were included in the present meta-analysis. The data revealed that patients with higher CRP concentrations had a greater risk of SD (hazard ratio, 1.19; 95% confidence interval, 1.09-1.29). When the hazard ratio of SD was calculated by multivariate analysis of nine studies, CRP was confirmed to be an independent predictive factor for SD (hazard ratio, 1.05; 95% confidence interval, 1.03-1.07). CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis confirmed that CRP is an independent predictor of SD. These results support the recommendation of recording the CRP concentration for risk assessment of SD in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of bioimpedance-defined overhydration (BI-OH) parameters in predicting the risk of mortality and cardiovascular (CV) events in patients undergoing dialysis. METHODS: We searched multiple electronic databases for studies investigating BI-OH indicators in the prediction of mortality and CV events through 23 May 2020. We assessed the effect of BI-OH indexes using unadjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Sensitivity analysis was used for each outcome. RESULTS: We included 55 studies with 104,758 patients in the meta-analysis. Extracellular water/total body water (ECW/TBW) >0.4 (HR 5.912, 95% CI: 2.016-17.342), ECW/intracellular water (ICW) for every 0.01 increase (HR 1.041, 95% CI: 1.031-1.051), and OH/ECW >15% (HR 2.722, 95% CI: 2.005-3.439) increased the risk of mortality in patients receiving dialysis. ECW/TBW >0.4 (HR 2.679, 95% CI: 1.345-5.339) and ECW/ICW per increment of 10% (HR 1.032, 95% CI: 1.017-1.047) were associated with an increased risk of CV events in patients undergoing dialysis. A 1-degree increase in phase angle was a protective factor for both mortality (HR 0.676, 95% CI: 0.474-0.879) and CV events (HR 0.736, 95% CI: 0.589-0.920). CONCLUSIONS: BI-OH parameters might be independent predictors for mortality and CV events in patients undergoing dialysis.

INTRODUCTION: Heart failure (HF) is an end-stage of numerous heart diseases including hypertension, coronary heart disease and arrhythmia, in which the heart is unable to perform its circulatory function with sufficient efficiency due to structural or functional dysfunction (systolic or diastolic alterations). Strategies such as exercise rehabilitation may improve cardiac function, exercise capacity and health-related quality of life and reduce anxiety and depression in patients with HF. However, the relative effectiveness as well as the hierarchy of exercise interventions have not been well established, although various exercise options are available. Therefore, this protocol proposes to conduct a network meta-analysis (NMA) aiming to compare the effectiveness of different types of exercise training in patients with HF. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library will be searched from inception to March 2021 for relevant randomised controlled trials. Other resources, such as Google Scholar and Clinical Trials.gov will also be considered. Studies assessing exercise rehabilitation in patients with HF will be selected. Two independent reviewers will identify eligible trials. The PEDro risk of bias assessment tool will be used to assess the quality of the included studies. Bayesian NMA will be used when possible to determine the comparative effectiveness of the different exercise interventions. The mean ranks and surface will estimate the ranking probabilities for the optimal intervention of various treatments under the cumulative ranking curve. Subgroup, sensitivity and meta-regression will be conducted to explain the included studies' heterogeneity if possible. We will also use the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation system to assess the strength of evidence. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This systematic review and NMA will synthesise evidence on the effectiveness of the different exercises in patients with HF. The results will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. No ethical approval will be required because the data used for the review will be exclusively extracted from published studies. BACKGROUND Rifaximin is an antimicrobial agent used to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Vitamin D3 can control IBD due to its effects on inflammatory cytokines. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of vitamin D3 on the intestinal flora of a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mouse model treated with rifaximin. MATERIAL AND METHODS The mouse model of IBD was developed using DSS (4%) administered via the drinking water. Twenty-four male C57BL6 mice were divided into the control group with a normal diet (N=6), the DSS group with a normal diet (N=6), the DSS group with a normal diet treated with rifaximin (N=6), and the DSS group with a normal diet treated with rifaximin and vitamin D3 (N=6). After 14 days, the colonic tissue was studied histologically. Serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used to measure the level of IL-6 and P65, and phospho-p65 was measured by western blot. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to analyze fecal samples. RESULTS In the DSS mouse model of IBD, rifaximin reduced the inflammation severity of the colon and reduced the expression of phospho-p65, p65, TNF-alpha, and IL-6. In the DSS+rifaximin+vitamin D3 group, the therapeutic influences of rifaximin, in terms of weight loss and colonic disease activity, were significantly reduced, and the gut microbiota of the mice were completely changed in composition and diversity. CONCLUSIONS In a mouse model of IBD, treatment with vitamin D3 significantly increased the metabolism of rifaximin and reduced its therapeutic effects.

INTRODUCTION: It is acknowledged that patients undergoing neurosurgery with neurological illness are at higher risk of lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT). As an underlying life-threatening complication, the incidence and risk factors for high-risk patients with lower extremity deep vein thrombosis are still controversial in relative high-risk patients after neurosurgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 204 patients who underwent neurosurgery and were considered as a high-risk group of DVT according to times of stay in bed more than 3 days were enrolled in this study. We evaluated the lower extremity DVT by using Color Doppler Ultrasound System (CDUS). Clinical parameters of patients at the time of admission and postoperation were recorded and prepared for further analysis. Early predictive factors for postoperative lower extremity DVT were established. Diagnostic performance of predictive factors was evaluated by using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS: The overall incidence rate of DVT in 204 enrolled patients was 30.9%. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that hypertension (OR 3.159, 95% CI 1.465-6.816; P = 0.003), higher postoperative D-dimer (OR 1.225, 95% CI 1.016-1.477; P = 0.034), female (OR 0.174, 95% CI 0.054-0.568; P = 0.004), and lower GCS score (OR 0.809, 95% CI 0.679-0.965; P = 0.013) were independently associated with incidence of DVT in patients after neurosurgery. The logistic regression function (LR model) of these four independent risk factors had a better performance on diagnostic value of DVT in patients after neurosurgery. CONCLUSION: The combined factor was constructed by hypertension, postoperative D-dimer, gender, and GCS score, and it might be a more handy and reliable marker to stratify patients at risk of DVT after neurosurgery.

PURPOSE: This study is designed to develop a Chinese version of the Diabetes Strengths and Resilience Measure for Adolescents (DSTAR-Teen) and evaluate its psychometric characteristics. DESIGN AND METHODS: One hundred and twenty adolescents with type 1 diabetes (Mean age = 16.3 ±â€¯5.1, 51.7% male, Mean HbA1c = 7.6 ±â€¯2.2%) were enrolled from one national endocrine center in China. Participants were administered with the DSTAR-Teen and the related psychosocial instruments to evaluate the reliability and validity. The DSTAR-Teen was adapted into Chinese version prior to data collection. RESULTS: The Chinese DSTAR-Teen demonstrated adequate reliability (Cronbach's α coefficients = 0.90, intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.98). A minimum detectable change at the 95% confidence level was 5.8 points. In exploratory and confirmatory factorial analyses, a three-factor structure emerged with a variance of 67.4%, demonstrating construct validity. Moreover, resilience was significantly associated with glycated hemoglobin, diabetes distress and self-care behavior as hypothesized, further supporting validity. CONCLUSION: The Chinese version of the DSTAR-Teen is a psychometrically sound instrument that may capture the adaptive attitudes and behaviors associated with diabetes management. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: This scale can be used in both clinical and research settings with the aim of identifying diabetes specific strengths and improving the health outcomes in adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Peripherally-inserted central catheter-related venous thrombosis has serious complications including the loss of vascular access, recurrent venous thrombosis, and post-thrombotic syndrome. Current guidelines recommend non-pharmacological strategies to prevent peripherally-inserted central catheter-related venous thrombosis. There is little evidence for the effectiveness of handgrip exercise on the prevention of peripherally-inserted central catheter-related venous thrombosis. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effectiveness of handgrip exercise using an elastic ball to prevent peripherally-inserted central catheter-related venous thrombosis in patients with solid cancers. DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial. SETTINGS: One teaching hospital in Nanjing, China. PARTICIPANTS: In total, 120 subjects with solid cancers were eligible; each had a new peripherally-inserted central catheter. They were recruited and randomly assigned into two exercise groups and one control group. METHODS: Subjects from exercise groups 1 and 2 performed a 3-week, 25-repetition handgrip exercise, 3 and 6 times daily, respectively. The control group subjects performed a gentle limb exercise with no frequency and intensity requirements. Ultrasound was used to detect venous thrombosis development and examine axillary vein blood flow over the three points. RESULTS: There were 32 cases of peripherally-inserted central catheter-related venous thrombosis detected. Two venous thrombosis cases in the control group were symptomatic, but all venous thrombosis cases in the exercise groups were asymptomatic. All venous thromboses were partial. There were significant differences in the incidence of venous thrombosis among the three groups (χ2 = 12.813, p = 0.002; χ2 = 9.340, p = 0.009; χ2 = 11.480, p = 0.003; and χ2 = 10.534, p = 0.005, respectively) at days 2, 3 and 21. The incidence of venous thrombosis in the two exercise groups was lower than that in the control group over the 3 time points (all, p < 0.05). The between-group effects and interaction effect in vein maximum velocity and time-mean flow velocity showed significant differences (F = 4.180, p = 0.025; F = 4.010, p = 0.045; and F = 2.928, p = 0.025) at days 2, 3, and 21, respectively. The axillary vein blood flow parameters in the control group were lower than those in the two exercise groups at day 21 (all, p < 0.05). However, no significant differences occurred in the incidence of venous thrombosis and axillary vein blood flow parameters between the two exercise groups. CONCLUSION: Handgrip exercise using an elastic ball daily for three weeks could decrease the incidence of peripherally-inserted central catheter-related venous thrombosis. The method is simple, with no negative consequence reported. Further studies are required to confirm this conclusion and to explore the optimal frequency of handgrip exercise.

BACKGROUND: Airway management in intensive care unit (ICU) patients is challenging. The aim of this study was to compare the rate of successful first-pass intubation in the ICU by using the direct laryngoscopy (DL) and that by using the video laryngoscopy (VL). METHODS: A randomized, non-blinded trial comparing first-pass success rate of intubation between VL and DL was performed. Patients were recruited in the period from August 2014 to August 2016. All physicians working at ICU received hands-on training in the use of the video and direct laryngoscope. The primary outcome measure was the first-pass intubation success. RESULTS: A total of 163 ICU patients underwent intubation during the study period (81 patients in VL group and 82 in DL group). The rate of successful first-pass intubation was not significantly different between the VL and the DL group (67.9% vs. 69.5%, P=0.824). Moreover, the overall intubation success and total number of attempts to achieve intubation success did not differ between the two groups. In patients with successful first-pass intubation, the median duration of the intubation procedure did not differ between the two groups. The Cormack-Lehane grades and the percentage of glottic opening score were similar, and no significant differences were found between the two groups. There were no statistical differences between the VL and the DL group in intubation complications (all P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Among ICU patients requiring intubation, there was no significant difference in the rate of successful first-pass intubation between VL and DL.

We sought to comprehensively assess the efficacy of Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC) in patients undergoing gynecologic surgery. A computerized literature search was conducted in Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases. Seven randomized controlled trials involving 1001 participants were included. Compared with control, IPC significantly lowered the deep vein thrombosis (DVT) risk [risk ratio (RR) = 0.33, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.16 - 0.66]. The incidence of DVT in IPC and drugs group was similar (4.5% versus. 3.99%, RR = 1.19, 95% CI: 0.42 - 3.44). With regards to pulmonary embolism risk, no significant difference was observed in IPC versus control or IPC versus drugs. IPC had a lower postoperative transfusion rate than heparin (RR = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.32 - 0.89), but had a similar transfusion rate in operating room to low molecular weight heparin (RR = 1.06, 95% CI: 0.69 - 1.63). Combined use of IPC and graduated compression stockings (GCS) had a marginally lower risk of DVT than GCS alone (RR = 0.38, 95% CI: 0.14 - 1.03). In summary, IPC is effective in reducing DVT complications in gynecologic surgery. IPC is neither superior nor inferior to pharmacological thromboprophylaxis. However, whether combination of IPC and chemoprophylaxis is more effective than IPC or chemoprophylaxis alone remains unknown in this patient population.

BACKGROUND: Decreased physical performance and impaired physiological and psychological fitness have been reported in patients with acute leukemia (AL). We performed a meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of exercise in patients with AL. METHODS: In this meta-analysis, the electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL and PEDro were searched through November 2015. Three authors participated in the study selection, data extraction and quality assessment. The instrument used for quality assessment was derived from the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. Analyses were performed according to the recommendations of The Cochrane Collaboration using Review Manager 5.3. RESULTS: Nine trials (8 randomized controlled trials and 1 quasi-experimental design trial) with 314 AL participants were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled standardized mean differences between the exercise and control groups were 0.45 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.09 to 0.80, P value = 0.01, P for heterogeneity = 0.23, I2 = 28%) for cardiorespiratory fitness and 0.67 (95% CI: 0.28 to 1.06, P value = 0.0007, P for heterogeneity = 0.14, I2 = 43%) for muscle strength. Based on the data for fatigue, anxiety, and depression, there were no significant differences in these parameters between the exercise and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: Exercise has beneficial effects on cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength and functional mobility; however, no significant improvements in fatigue, anxiety, depression or quality of life were observed. Further large-scale randomized trials are needed to assess the safety, feasibility and efficacy of exercise programs for AL patients.
