RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate the change of retinal thickness and choroidal thickness in patients with diabetic macular edema or retinal vein occlusion- macular edema after intravitreal Ranibizumab injection using spectral domain-optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT),and to identify determinants for the change of different types of macular edema. METHODS: Patients were recruited from March 2016 to July 2017 diagnosed with diabetic macular edema or retinal vein occlusion - macular edema. Subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and central retinal thickness (CRT) of all eyes were measured by SD - OCT preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6mo after operation. The change of retinal thickness and choroidal thickness after intravitreal ranibizumab injection for macular edema caused by different diseases were evaluated. Moreover, the potential determinants were studied about the change of retinal thickness and choroidal thickness. RESULTS: Thirty-six eyes of 36 patents with macular edema were treated with intravitreal ranibizumab injection. After the intravitreal ranibizumab injection, the CRT and SFCT decreased, when compared with the CRT and SFCT preoperative. There was a significant difference in the change of CRT and SFCT in different time points of following-up (FCRT=40.876, PCRT<0.001; FSFCT=46.319, PSFCT< 0. 001). In diabetic macular edema group, the change of SFCT was associated with the preoperative SFCT, and the change of CRT was correlated with preoperative CRT and the fast blood glucose level. In retinal vein occlusion-macular edema group, the change of SFCT was associated with the preoperative SFCT, the change of CRT was associated with preoperative CRT,the obstructive positions and the onset time of disease. CONCLUSION: Reduction of choroidal thickness and retinal thickness in macular edema caused by different diseases can be detected with SD-OCT after intravitreal injections of ranibizumab. The reduction of choroidal thickness was correlated with the preoperative choroidal thickness. In diabetic macular edema eyes, the reduction of retinal thickness was correlated with preoperative CRT and the fast blood glucose level. Whereas,in retinal vein occlusion-macular edema eyes, the reduction of retinal thickness was correlated with the preoperative CRT, the obstructive positions and the onset time.

RESUMO

AIM: To evaluate the clinical effect of bevacizumab in pterygium treatment. METHODS: A systematic review and quantitative Meta-analysis was performed. PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane database were searched for eligible literatures published in English until June 2016. The endpoint was recurrence rate and pooled risk ratio (RR) was calculated. RESULTS: Nine eligible studies were included and Meta-analysis results showed no significantly difference in patients treated with bevacizumab in short term follow-up [3mo: RR=0.70 (0.34, 1.45); 6mo: RR=0.55 (0.23, 1.32)] compared with control groups. No significant effects were observed in favor of bevacizumab in subgroup analyses: patients with subconjunctival injection of bevacizumab [3mo: RR=0.95 (0.70, 1.29); 6mo: RR=0.83 (0.55, 1.28)], primary pterygium [3mo: RR=0.59 (0.23, 1.54; 6mo: RR=0.59 (0.23, 1.53)], simple pterygium excision [3mo: 0.32 (0.05, 2.04), P=0.23; 6mo: 0.27 (0.05, 1.53)] and excision with conjunctival autograft [3mo: 1.51 (0.25, 9.15); 6mo: 1.11 (0.06, 21.69)]. CONCLUSION: In this Meta-analysis, we did not found the significant effect of bevacizumab in pterygium treatment, at least in short term follow-up (3mo and 6mo).

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between the preoperative biometric parameters of the anterior segment and the vault after implantable Collamer lens (ICL) implantation via this retrospective study. DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study. METHODS: A total of 78 eyes from 41 patients who underwent ICL implantation surgery were included in this study. Preoperative biometric parameters, including white-to-white (WTW) diameter, central corneal thickness, keratometer, pupil diameter, anterior chamber depth, sulcus-to-sulcus diameter, anterior chamber area (ACA) and central curvature radius of the anterior surface of the lens (Lenscur), were measured. Lenscur and ACA were measured with Rhinoceros 5.0 software on the image scanned with ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM). The vault was assessed by UBM 3 months after surgery. Multiple stepwise regression analysis was employed to identify the variables that were correlated with the vault. RESULTS: The results showed that the vault was correlated with 3 variables: ACA (22.4 ± 4.25 mm2), WTW (11.36 ± 0.29 mm) and Lenscur (9.15 ± 1.21 mm). The regressive equation was: vault (mm) = 1.785 + 0.017 × ACA + 0.051 × Lenscur - 0.203 × WTW. CONCLUSIONS: Biometric parameters of the anterior segment (ACA, WTW and Lenscur) can predict the vault after ICL implantation using a new regression equation.

RESUMO

This study is a meta-analysis comparing the efficacy, predictability, and safety of correcting myopia via implantation of two types of phakic intraocular lens (PIOLs): the implantable collamer lens (ICL) and iris-fixed PIOL. The Cochrane library, Pubmed, and EMBASE were searched. Study selection, data exclusion, and quality assessment were performed by two independent observers. The pooled relative risk (RR), pooled standardized mean difference (SMD), and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to compare lenses. Seven studies, involving 511 eyes, were included. The pooled SMD in postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) comparing ICLs to iris-fixed PIOLs was -0.22 (95% CI, -0.58 to 0.13; P = .22). The pooled RR values of UDVA of 20/20 or better and of 20/40 or better comparing ICLs to iris-fixed PIOLs were 1.15 (95% CI, 0.89 to 1.47; P = .29) and 1.01 (95% CI, 0.95 to 1.08; P = .75), respectively. The pooled RR of loss of best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) and gain in BSCVA comparing ICLs to iris-fixed PIOLs were 1.20 (95% CI, 0.24 to 6.00; P = .82) and 1.14 (95% CI, 0.89 to 1.48; P = .31), respectively. The pooled RR comparing ICLs to iris-fixed PIOLs was 0.78 (95% CI, 0.29 to 2.12; P = .63) for all reported complications and 2.80 (95% CI, 1.04 to 7.52; P = .04) for severe complications. The pooled RR of achieving a result within ± 0.5 D (diopter) of the intended target comparing ICLs to iris-fixed PIOLs was 1.35 (95% CI, 1.04 to 1.77; P = .03). Overall, there is no significant difference in efficacy between the two types of PIOLs or in safety, except that the ICL is associated with a greater incidence of severe complications, especially anterior subcapsular cataract, primarily in the Version 2 and Version 3 groups. However, ICL has better predictability.

RESUMO

Through observing the responses of photosynthesis in leaves of broad bean grown under natural conditions to light and CO(2) using a portable photosynthetic analyzer LI-6400, the following findings were obtained. (1) Observing the response of photosynthesis to light using a leaf without being induced by light might lead to an artifact that photosynthesis was not saturated even under full sunlight. (2) The calculated saturating light intensity of photosynthesis by some empirical equations was much lower than actual value obtained by observing. (3) During observation of photosynthetic response to CO(2), each step of changing CO(2) concentration should be accompanied by a match step of the photosynthetic analyzer, otherwise, there will be substantial deviations in the results obtained. (4) Observing photosynthetic response to CO(2) at non-saturating light might lead to an underestimation of leaf photosynthetic capacity.

RESUMO

Avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH) is a debilitating disease that commonly leads to destruction of the hip joint in adults. The etiology of ANFH is unknown, but previous studies have indicated that heritable thrombophilia (increased tendency to form thrombi) and hypofibrinolysis (reduced ability to lyse thrombi), alcohol intake, and steroid use are risk factors for ANFH. We recently identified two families with ANFH showing autosomal dominant inheritance. By applying linkage analysis to a four-generation pedigree, we excluded linkage between the family and three genes related to thrombophilia and hypofibrinolysis: protein C, protein S, and plasminogen activator inhibitor. Furthermore, by a genomewide scan, a significant two-point LOD score of 3.45 (recombination fraction [theta] = 0) was obtained between the family with ANFH and marker D12S85 on chromosome 12. High-resolution mapping was conducted in a second family with ANFH and replicated the linkage to D12S368 (pedigree I: LOD score 2.47, theta = 0.05; pedigree II: LOD score 2.81, theta = 0.10). When an age-dependent-penetrance model was applied, the combined multipoint LOD score was 6.43 between D12S1663 and D12S85. Thus, we mapped the candidate gene for autosomal dominant ANFH to a 15-cM region between D12S1663 and D12S1632 on chromosome 12q13.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recurrent deletion on a chromosomal location in tumor cells can be detected by frequent allelic loss and generally is considered to be an indication of the existence of a tumor suppressor gene (TSG) in the region. In the current study, using fluorescent-labeled, high-density microsatellite markers for allelotyping, the authors pinpointed three minimal deleted regions (MDRs) and screened mutations of putative TSGs on chromosomes 3, 9, and 11 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cases occurring in Taiwan. METHODS: A total of 133 informative microsatellite markers were used on chromosomes 3, 9, and 11 with an average marker density of 4 centimorgans (cM) for the allelotyping of genomic DNAs isolated from NPC tissues and their corresponding lymphocytes in 48 patients. The correlation between allelic loss and the clinicopathologic parameters of NPC tissues was examined. In addition, putative TSGs including FHIT, p16(INK4a), and p19(ARF) were selected for mutation screening to investigate their potential participation in NPC tumorigenesis. RESULTS: Of 3787 informative allelotyping data, 25 frequent allelic losses (or loss of heterozygosity [LOH]) in 13 cytogenetic loci were identified based on a deletion frequency that was greater than the average of allelic loss on that particular chromosome. Several significant associations were determined after statistical analysis of the correlation between allelic loss and clinicopathologic parameters. The allelic losses by D9S318 and D11S1304 were associated with N2/N3 (P = 0.035 and P = 0.005, respectively), and those by D9S905 and D11S1304 were associated with grouped American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) Stage III/IV samples (P = 0.022 and P = 0.017, respectively) of NPC tissues. In addition, three MDRs were revealed on 3p25.3-24.1 (< 19 cM), 3p23-21.31 (< 9 cM), and 11q22.1-23.2 (< 8 cM). To examine somatic mutations in previously reported TSGs located near these frequent LOH loci, three candidate genes, p16(INK4a), p19(ARF), and FHIT, were analyzed. Point mutations in the coding region of FHIT and in the intron 1 splicing acceptor site of both p16(INK4a) and p19(ARF) were detected in NPC cell lines. Sequence analysis of both p16(INK4a) and p19(ARF) transcripts revealed that the point mutation resulted in skipping of exon 2 and the generation of shorter transcripts. CONCLUSIONS: High-density allelotyping permitted the discovery of 3 MDRs on 3p25.3-24.1 (< 19 cM), 3p23-21.31 (< 9 cM), and 11q22.1-23.2 (< 8 cM) and a correlation was determined between allelic loss and clinicopathologic parameters of NPC tissues. More important, one somatic mutation in NPC cell lines on the intron 1/exon 2 splicing acceptor site of the INK4a/ARF locus was found to result in exon 2 skipping both p16(INK4a) and p19(ARF) transcripts, which presumably inactivates the functions of both the p16(INK4a) and p19(ARF) proteins.
