RESUMO

This work deals with the analysis of the electronic subsystem of a multiwavelength elastic scanning lidar. Several calibration tests are applied to the Cubatão scanning lidar placed at the industrial area of Cubatão in the State of São Paulo (Brazil), in order to improve the knowledge of its performing itself and to design protocols for correcting lidar signal for undesirable instrumental effects. In particular, the trigger delay is assessed by means of zero-bin and bin-shift tests for analog (AN) and photo-counting (PC) signals, respectively. Dark current test is also performed to detect potential range-dependency that could affect lidar products. All tests were performed at different spatial resolutions. These instrumental corrections were applied to a case study of data acquired for characterizing the optical and microphysical properties of particles in an industrial flare. To that aim, a graphical method based on the space defined by the extinction-related Angström exponent versus its spectral curvature is used to derive the contribution of fine aerosol to extinction and the size of the fine aerosols in the industrial flare, therefore revealing features of the processes occurring inside the flame. Our study demonstrates the potential of this new technique for the study and measurement of industrial emissions.

RESUMO

Crude petroleum oils are complex mixtures of different compounds (mainly organic), which are obtained from an extensive range of different geological sources. The fluorescence of crude petroleum oils derives largely from the aromatic hydrocarbon fraction, and this fluorescence emission is strongly influenced by the chemical composition (e.g., fluorophore and quencher concentrations) and physical characteristics (e.g., viscosity and optical density) of the oil. The fluorescence spectroscopy (FS) is increasingly used in petroleum technology due the availability of better optical detection techniques, because FS offers high sensitivity, good diagnostic potential, and relatively simple instrumentation. In this work we analyzed crude petroleum at different dilution in Nujol, a transparent mineral oil. The main objective of this work was to verify the possibility to measure crude oil emission spectroscopic without use of volatile solvents. The mixtures of nujol with different -crude oil concentrations were measured with a 10 mm optical path cuvette thus simplifying the fluorescence spectroscopy signal detection. The emission spectra were obtained by exciting the samples with a 400 W Xenon lamp at 350 nm, 450 nm and 532 nm. The emissions of the samples were collected perpendicularly with the excitation axis.

RESUMO

The photochemical degradation of agrochemicals in aqueous solution by means of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) was studied. The photo-Fenton process was evaluated in terms of the time evolution of dissolved organic carbon (COD) and chemical oxygen demand (DOC), their total removals, and increase in biodegradability of treated wastewater. Under the experimental conditions studied, the process showed to be superior to other AOPs, at any Fe(II) and H2O2 concentrations. The results pointed towards the use of solar irradiation and low cost commercial application.

RESUMO

Linear Alkyl Benzenes (LABs) are used as insulating oil for electric cables. When it happens a spill, LABs they are basically sorbed in the soil, because, these compounds have high hidrophobicity and low vapor pressure. The conventional methods of treatment of soils are not efficient. The Fenton's reaction (reaction between a solution of iron II and hydrogen peroxide) it generates hydroxyl radicals, not selective, and capable of oxidize a great variety of organic compounds. A study was conducted to evaluate the viability of use of the Fenton's reagents to promote the remediation of polluted soils with Linear Alkyl Benzenes. A column was especially projected for these experiments, packed with a sandy and other soil loamy. The pH of the soil was not altered. The obtained results demonstrated the technical viability of the process of injection of the Fenton's reagents for the treatment of polluted areas with LABs.

RESUMO

A statistical study on the behavior of ground-level O3 concentration in different regions of a large urban area was carried out, with emphasis on pollutant gas concentrations and meteorological variables. The study was based on data generated by a network of measuring stations distributed throughout the São Paulo Metropolitan Area, in regions with different characteristics of traffic and economic activities. The combined application of principal component analysis and clustering techniques to data collected from 1997 until 2000 has led to the identification of implicit relationships between variables that have been associated with dominant processes related to O3 formation in different locations. Similarities between different regions of the city have also been detected and associated with local characteristics. The results indicate that the application of such statistical techniques to data collected in large urban areas enables the grouping of different regions according to their behavior in terms of O3 levels, as well as the identification of dominant processes in each group. These techniques are thus important in the planning of air pollution policies, especially in the case of O3, a pollutant that is not directly related to pollution levels alone.
