RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: This analysis assessed the association between regional income, screening coverage for cervical and breast cancer, and temporal trends in mortality from these cancers in different Brazilian health regions. STUDY DESIGN: Spatiotemporal ecological study across 450 health regions of Brazil. METHODS: Data from 2010 Demographic Census were used to assess income. Variations in income distribution within health regions were measured using the Gini index. Data on screening coverage were obtained from the Ambulatory Information System (SIA/SUS). Mortality was assessed from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 data. The average annual percentage change (AAPC) in cervical and breast cancer mortality rates, 2010-2018, was calculated by health regions. Results were presented in regional maps. The associations between income, screening coverage and mortality changes were estimated by bivariate spatial correlation. RESULTS: Health regions located in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil had the greatest percentages of screening coverage and highest per capita incomes with the lowest Gini index values. From 2010 to 2018, mortality rates for cervical cancer were highest in the North and Northeast health regions. Breast cancer mortality rates were highest in the South and Southeast health regions. The AAPC in breast and cervical cancer mortality had a negative association with per capita income and screening coverage, and a positive association with the Gini index. CONCLUSIONS: There are large regional variations in income, screening coverage, and mortality rates for women with breast and cervical cancer. These inequities could be mitigated by policies to address income disparities and improved access to screening.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyse the attributable risk of mortality and DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years) due to occupational carcinogens for lung cancer between 1990 and 2019 in Brazil and federation units, as well as its relationship with the Socio-demographic Index (SDI). STUDY DESIGN: Epidemiological study. METHODS: This is an epidemiological study that used GBD 2019 (Global Burden of Disease Study) estimates of lung cancer mortality rates and DALYs attributable to occupational carcinogens. The relationship between these rates and SDI was assessed using panel data analysis. RESULTS: In Brazil, occupational exposure to asbestos, silica and diesel vapours accounted for more than 85.00% of lung cancer deaths and DALYs attributable to occupational carcinogens in both sexes between 1990 and 2019. An increase in both rates was observed in women for almost all the occupational carcinogens assessed, especially in the North and Northeast regions of the country, with diesel vapours standing out the most. CONCLUSIONS: The present study highlighted the urge to characterise exposure to occupational risks for lung cancer, especially for the female population in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Nanotechnology can benefit livestock industries, especially through postharvest semen manipulation. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (Np-ZnO) are potentially an example. OBJECTIVE: To investigate how the addition of zinc oxide nanoparticles (Np-ZnO) affected the characteristics of post-thawed goat semen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seminal pools from four Saanen bucks were used. Semen was diluted in Tris-egg yolk extender, supplemented with Np-ZnO (0, 50, 100 or 200 ug/mL), frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen (-196 degree C), and thawed in a water bath (37 degree C / 30 s). Semen samples were evaluated for sperm kinetics by computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA), and assessed for other functional properties by epifluorescence microscopy, such as plasma membrane integrity (PMi), acrosomal membrane integrity (ACi) and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). RESULTS: For total motility (TM), the group treated with 200 ug/mL Np-ZnO was superior to the control. In straight-line velocity (VSL), the control was better than the group containing 200 ug/mL of Np-ZnO. For average path velocity (VAP), the control was higher than with 100 ug/mL Np-ZnO. For linearity (LIN), the control was higher than with 200 µg/mL Np-ZnO. In straightness (STR), the control and 100 µg/mL Np-ZnO were higher than with 200 ug/mL Np-ZnO. In wobble (WOB), the control was better than the 50 µg/mL Np-ZnO treatment. In PMi, ACi and MMP no significant differences were found. CONCLUSION: The addition of Np-ZnO (200 ug/mL) to the goat semen freezing extender improved the total motility of cells, whilst negatively affecting sperm kinetics. https://doi.org/10.54680/fr24210110512.

BACKGROUND: Semen cryopreservation is a biotechnology used frequently in animal production; however, there are some obstacles, such as those caused by high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moringa oleifera (MO) is known as a potent source of antioxidants and might be an important adjuvant. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of different concentrations of MO extract supplementation on goat semen cryopreservation efficiency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ejaculates (n=6) from four goat breeders were pooled and diluted in skimmed milk (SM) or Tris-egg yolk (TEY)-based extenders and supplemented with different concentrations of MO extract (0, 1, 2 and 5 mg/mL). After the freeze-thaw cycle, sperm kinetics and viability were assessed. RESULTS: With the SM extender, straightness, wobble and plasma membrane integrity were lower than in the control group (P < 0.05). With the TEY extender, wobble was lower in with 5 mg/mL MO extract than in the control group (P < 0.05). As regards sperm ultrastructure, evaluated by SEM, the MO extract, regardless of the diluent used, damaged the membrane of sperm cells in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION: The addition of aqueous extract of MO leaves in both diluents at all concentrations tested affects the parameters of sperm progressivity and damages the plasma membrane in a dose-dependent manner. BACKGROUND: There is rapid growth of older people in Low- and Middle- Income Countries (LMICs). The aim of this review was to assess the literature on prevalence of anxiety and depression in this demographic, which to our knowledge, has not yet been conducted. METHODS: Databases including Medline, PsychInfo, Embase, Scielo and African Journals Online were searched for terms including "mental disorders", "neurotic disorders", "mood disorders" and "anxiety disorders". Studies published between 1990 and 2020 providing data on older people (≥50 years) in LMICs (defined by World Bank Criteria) were included and quality-assessed. Meta-analysis was conducted on a subset of higher-quality studies to derive pooled prevalence estimates of depression. RESULTS: One hundred and forty relevant studies were identified, of which thirty-two were included in meta-analysis. One hundred and fifteen studies reported depression prevalence only, 19 reported both depression and anxiety, and six reported anxiety only. In all studies identified, depression prevalence ranged from 0.5 % to 62.7 %, and Generalised Anxiety Disorder prevalence ranged from 0.2 % to 32.2 %. The pooled prevalence of depression on meta-analysis was 10.5 % (95 % CI, 8.9 % - 11.2 %). Reported prevalence rates of depression were significantly different in studies using ICD-10 compared with DSM criteria, and between community and clinical settings. LIMITATIONS: The search strategy contained bias towards English language papers and high income country (HIC) publications. There is significant heterogeneity within the meta-analysis. DISCUSSION: A wide range of methodologies and clinical criteria are used in prevalence studies of depression and anxiety in older people. Studies using screening tools found higher prevalence rates; clinicians and researchers should ensure diagnosis is made with gold-standard clinical criteria. Meta-analysis data suggest that rates of depression are similar in older people in LMICs compared to HICs but mental healthcare resources are limited, suggesting a large potential treatment gap.

AIMS: Cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates are approximately 55% higher in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) along the Texas-Mexico border compared with the average rates in the US. Our aim was to improve cervical cancer prevention efforts in the RGV through a comprehensive multilevel intervention initiative focused on community education, patient navigation, and training of local providers. METHODS: We initiated a program in the RGV which consisted of (1) community education, (2) patient navigation, and (3) a training/mentoring program for local medical providers including hands-on training courses coupled with telementoring using Project ECHO® (Extension for Community Health Outcomes). We assessed the number of women undergoing cervical cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment at three participating clinics caring for underserved women in the region. RESULTS: From November 2014 to October 2018, 14,846 women underwent cervical cancer screening. A total of 2030 (13.7%) women underwent colposcopy for abnormal results (179% increase over baseline) and 453 women underwent loop electrosurgical excision procedures (LEEPs) for treatment of cervical dysplasia. Invasive cancer was diagnosed in 39 women who were navigated to a gynecologic oncologist for treatment. Seven local medical providers were trained to perform colposcopy and/or LEEP. Project ECHO telementoring videoconferences were held every 2 weeks for a total 101 sessions with an average of 22 participants per session and a total of 180 patient cases presented and discussed. CONCLUSIONS: Our program led to a large number of women undergoing diagnosis and treatment of cervical dysplasia in the RGV. If sustained, we anticipate these efforts will decrease cervical cancer rates in the region. The program is currently being expanded to additional underserved areas of Texas and globally to low- and middle-income countries.

This research article aims to evaluate the effect of total replacement of corn by soybean meal and urea on intake and apparent digestibility of dry matter and its components, production and composition of milk and feeding behavior of lactating cows grazing, with intermittent stocking Mombaça grass (Megathyrsus maximus cv. Mombaça). Twelve milking cows were distributed in a triple 4 x 4 latin square. Experimental treatments consisted of four soybean meal replacement levels by corn more urea (0; 33; 66; 100%). The grass has an average content of crude protein and neutral detergent fiber of 19% and 59%, respectively. The replacement of soybean meal by corn and urea did not affect the intake and digestibility of nutrients. A linear reduction of milk production was observed, but there was no change in milk production corrected to 4.0% of fat. The milk components (g/kg) of fat, protein, lactose, and total solids were not altered, as well as feeding behavior. Under the conditions of this study, the replacement of the diets is suitable for crossbred dairy cows in lactation third medium, producing in average of 12.5 kg/day-1 when kept in quality pastures.(AU)

Maternal anxiety symptoms in the perinatal period might have long-term health effects on both the mother and the developing child. Valerian is a phytotherapeutic agent that is widely used for the treatment of anxiety. This study investigated the effects of valerian treatment in postpartum rats on maternal care, toxicity, and milk composition. Postnatal development, memory, and anxiety behavior in the offspring were also assessed. Postpartum Wistar rats received the valerian (500, 1000, or 2000 mg·kg-1·day-1) by oral gavage. Clinical and biochemical toxicity was evaluated with commercial kits. Maternal behavior was observed daily. Milk composition was analyzed by colorimetric methods. Physical and neuromotor tests were used to analyze postnatal development. Anxiolytic activity was assessed by the elevated plus maze, and memory was evaluated by the step-down inhibitory avoidance task. Maternal toxicity and care behavior were not altered by the treatment, while only the highest dose promoted a significant increase of lactose, and the doses 1000 and 2000 mg·kg-1·day-1 promoted a reduction of protein contents in milk. Postnatal development was similar in all offspring. Adult offspring did not display altered anxiety behavior, while long-term memory was impaired in the female adult offspring by maternal treatment with 1000 mg·kg-1·day-1. These results suggested that high doses of valerian had significant effects on important maternal milk components and can cause long-term alterations of offspring memory; thus, treatment with high doses of valerian is not safe for breastfeeding Wistar rat mothers.

In the Amazon region, Trypanosoma cruzi transmission cycles involve a great diversity of Triatominae vectors and mammal reservoirs. Some Rhodnius spp. mainly inhabit palm trees that act as microhabitats for hosts and vectors. The current study aimed to describe aspects of the bio-ecology of the vectors and reservoirs of T. cruzi in relation to human populations resident near areas with large quantities of palm trees, in rural, peri-urban and urban collection environments, located in the Western Brazilian Amazon. Rhodnius pictipes and Didelphis marsupialis were respectively the most predominant vector and reservoir, with rates of 71% for R. pictipes and 96.5% for D. marsupialis. The vast majority of T. cruzi isolates clustered with TcI. The most prevalent haplotype was TcI COII1 (69.7%). Mauritia flexuosa and Attalea phalerata were the main ecological indicators of infestation by triatomines. Birds were the most common food source (27,71%). T. cruzi isolated from R. robustus has the haplotype HUM-13, previously detected in a chronic Chagas patient living in the same area. Our results demonstrate the relevance of this study, with the occurrence of elevated infection rates in animals, and suggest the importance of the Amazon zones where there is a risk of infection in humans.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate goat sperm sorting in continuous Percoll® density gradients and gamete freezability, in the presence or absence of phenolic antioxidants. For this, semen pools were sorted, frozen, and evaluated. The non-selected group (NSg) presented lower progressive motility (PM), linearity (LIN), straightness (STR), and wobble (WOB) than the selected groups, and straight line velocity (VSL) compared to those with catechin or resveratrol. The amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH) was higher in NSg, and quercetin reduced the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). After thawing, the NSg presented lower PM than the selected groups, VSL and VAP (average path velocity) than the selected group with or without catechin, LIN and WOB than the selected with or without catechin or resveratrol, and STR than the selected with catechin. Moreover, NSg presented higher ALH and BCF than the samples selected with or without catechin. Plasma membrane integrity and intact and living cells were higher in the selected groups, and MMP was lower in the NSg and the selected group with quercetin. Thus, centrifugation in Percoll® continuous density gradients is a viable methodology to select goat sperm compatible with the freezing, especially in the presence of catechin or resveratrol.(AU)

Australian Merino ewes and lambs producing fine fibre wool for export are raised in the north-west of Uruguay in pasture-based systems. We studied the status of selenium and iodine in pregnant Merino ewes (10 per treatment) grazing in natural pasture, in natural pasture and supplemented with Se (0.1 mg Se/kg dry matter intake) and I (1 mg I/kg dry matter intake), or in natural pasture and supplemented with Se alone (0.1 mg Se/kg dry matter intake), during the last 30 days of gestation. Further, we evaluated the performance and wool quality of their offspring. Content of Se and I in natural pasture, in the sera of pregnant ewes, and in the wool of their offspring and levels of thyroidal hormones-TSH, T4, and free T3 (FT3)-in the sera of pregnant ewes were determined. The performance of lambs and the commercial parameters of fine fibre wool produced were measured. Results showed normal Se levels in serum (0.12-0.15 mg/l) in the ewes grazing in natural pasture (0.07-0.09 mg/kg DM) during late pregnancy. The observed increase in Se content in the pasture at lambing (0.11-0.16 mg/kg DM) improved serum Se levels (0.216 mg/l); however, the serum levels were not affected by the supplementation. I content in pasture showed adequate levels (0.50-0.60 mg/kg DM), which were reflected in the blood serum values 30 days prior to lambing (0.197-0.208 mg/l). However, at lambing, the I content in blood serum decreased (0.150 mg/l). Further, the supplementation did not modify the serum I levels (0.163-0.175 mg/l). An increase in FT3 levels in ewes at lambing could be associated with the increase in Se content in pasture and/or the adequate I content in pasture. No effect of supplementation was observed. Lambs showed good results regarding the quality of fine fibre wool and performance after supplementation with Se and I or Se alone and exhibited slightly improved Se and I content in wool. In conclusion, natural pasture provides adequate status in Se and I for the Merino ewes and their offspring without any additional beneficial effects of supplementation with Se and I or only Se.
RESUMO
Overweight/obesity has become a worldwide epidemic, and factors such as a sedentary lifestyle and inadequate eating habits directly contribute to the development of this condition. Studies indicate that rapid weight gain at critical development stages, such as the lactation period, is associated with the development of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes in the long term. In addition to metabolic changes during adulthood, overweight/obesity may influence reproductive function of the population. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate postnatal overfeeding effects on male and female Wistar rat reproductive parameters. Postnatal overfeeding was induced by applying the litter reduction method for both sexes. Forty animals were used, divided into four groups: two with normal litters (NLâ and NLâ) and two with small litters (SLâ and SLâ). The males were euthanized at 90 days of age, on the same date the females were mated. Females were also euthanized after the 20-day gestation. Metabolic and reproductive variables were analyzed. Regarding males, SL animals showed increased body weight, adiposity, and decreased relative weight of the seminal vesicle, prostate, and epididymis as well as changes in the ITT and OGTT glycemic tests. Concerning females, SL animals presented increased body weight, relative perigonadal fat weight, glucose intolerance as well as modify the vaginal opening and increased weight of female pup. The litter reduction method was efficient in leading to metabolic and reproductive alterations in male and female Wistar rat.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of (+)-catechin or (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on goat semen freezability. Poolsof semen were processed (Experiment 1: 0, 15, 25, 50, 75, or 100µM (+)-catechin; Experiment 2: 0, 15, 25, 50, 75, or 100µM EGCG) and frozen. After thawing, the samples were evaluated for kinematics, plasma membrane (PMi) and acrosome integrity, morphology, and oxidative stress, at 0 and 1h. In Experiment 1, at 0h, VSL and VAP were greater (P<0.05) with 15µM than with 50 and 100; WOB was lower (P<0.05) with 100µM than with 0, 15, and 25; and BCF was higher (P<0.05) with 75 and 100µM than with 0. In turn, in Experiment 2, progressive motility was higher (P<0.05) with0 and 15µM than with50 and 75; LIN was lower (P<0.05) with75 and100µM than with0 and 15; WOB was higher (P<0.05) with0 and 15µM; and PMi was greater (P<0.05) with100µM than 0. Thus, (+)-catechin or EGCG at higher concentrations inhibits the kinematics of frozen goat sperm, in a transitory way, and 100µM of EGCG preserves the PMi.(AU)

INTRODUCTION: Alterations in the plantar footprint in the child are a cause for concern in parents. OBJECTIVE: Determine the frequency of plantar footprint alterations in school children. Determine if there is a relationship between overweight and obesity with the presence of alterations of the plantar footprint. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Observational, transversal and prospective study. 959 schoolchildren aged six to 13 were evaluated. Weight, size, body mass index for age were recorded. The plantar footprint was cataloged on flat foot and cavus foot using the arch index. For statistical analysis and comparison, the SPSS version 24 program was used with the 2 and ANOVA tests. RESULTS: 530 children (55.3%) and 429 girls (44.7%). The median age was 8.97 years. 182 children were found (19%) with alteration of the plantar footprint, 42.3% with flat foot and 57.7% with cavus foot. None of them had foot symptoms. 131 children were overweight and 52 obese, without influencing the presence of any alteration of the plantar footprint (p = 0.20). The flat-foot ratio was higher in men (2.5:1) and standing cavus major in women (1.3:1). CONCLUSIONS: In our study group we find a higher prevalence of the cavus foot compared to the flat foot. Body weight did not influence plantar footprint alterations.
