RESUMO

Synopsis Powdered henna leaf as used as a cosmetic in the Middle East has been tested for its antimicrobial qualities against a series of common organisms. It has been shown to be effective against bacteria and some common fungi, but to have only limited potency against Candida albicans and Trichosporon beigelii.

RESUMO

An open study was carried out in 41 children with mild to moderate psoriasis to assess the effectiveness and tolerance of treatment with a 0.1% dithranol plus 17% urea preparation applied twice daily. Thirty-four patients completed 6-weeks' treatment and 8 of them continued for a further 4 to 6 weeks. The results showed considerable improvement in lesions and, in general, the preparation was well-tolerated and considered to be highly or very acceptable by the majority of the patients. Only 3 patients had to be withdrawn for treatment-related reasons which involved soreness or burning of the skin due to the dithranol.

RESUMO

A double-blind, randomized trial was carried out in 44 patients with acne vulgaris to assess the effectiveness of two similar topical combination preparations, one containing hydrocortisone acetate ('Actinac') and the other without the steroid, when applied in lotion form. Patients used one or other of the two formulations twice daily for the first 4 days and then at night only for the remainder of the 3-month study period. The results showed that both treatments were effective but the full formulation-treated group showed a better response at the end of the first month's treatment in terms of percentage reduction in lesion count score, although this did not reach statistical significance. After 3 months, the average lesion count scores dropped from 82 to 11 in the full formulation and from 81 to 8 in the formulation minus hydrocortisone group.

RESUMO

This is a preliminary report of a co-operative study of 1,203 episodes of acute myocardial infarction in men under 70 years in four centres in the south west of England. The mortality at 28 days was 15%. A comparison is made between home care by the family doctor and hospital treatment initially in an intensive care unit: 343 cases were allocated at random. The randomized groups do not differ significantly in composition with respect to age; past history of angina, infarction, or hypertension; or hypotension when first examined. The mortality rates of the random groups are similar for home and hospital treatment. The group sent electively to hospital contained a higher proportion of initially hypotensive patients whose prognosis was bad wherever treated; those who were not hypotensive fared rather worse in hospital. For some patients with acute myocardial infarction seen by their general practitioner home care is ethically justified, and the need for general admission to hospital should be reconsidered.
