Prosthetic biomaterials can affect the composition of the subgingival microbiota and consequently the production of proinflammatory cytokines, causing damage to the periodontium. A total of 40 patients were divided into two groups: 20 with monolithic zirconia (MZ) prostheses and 20 with porcelain fused to metal (PFM) with nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) alloy prostheses. Subgingival plaque and gingival crevicular fluid samples were taken. The Checkerboard technique for DNA-DNA hybridization and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique were performed. Teeth with MZ presented a lower percentage of bleeding on probing and tooth mobility compared to teeth with PFM with Ni-Cr alloy. Prosthodontic teeth harbored higher total levels of the 18 bacterial species than non-prosthodontic teeth. There was a higher prevalence of S. gordonii and V. parvula species in PFM with Ni-Cr alloy compared to MZ. There was an increase in IL-1ß, TNF-α and CX3CL1 levels in PFM with Ni-Cr alloy compared to MZ. MZ is a candidate biomaterial with fewer negative effects on the periodontium, allowing for longer prostheses longevity in the mouth.

Introduction Radiosurgery is a treatment in which a high dose of ionizing radiation is administered to a small field with high-precision techniques, and is a common treatment for tumors and other diagnoses. A typical complication is the development of radiation-induced edema that can progress to radiation necrosis in some cases. The administration of corticosteroids has been used empirically as a prophylaxis in patients who will be treated by stereotactic radiosurgery with intracranial tumors and other pathologies with the intention to prevent radiation-induced edema and or necrosis. Objective The aim of our study is to describe the actual use of corticosteroids in hospitals that perform stereotactic radiosurgery treatments in Latin America and Spain through a survey applied to neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists and expose the implications of the results, as well as to analyze the available literature on it. Methods  We designed a questionnaire of 15 items related to the use of corticosteroids as prophylaxis in patients who will be treated with radiosurgery. The questionnaire was answered by 121 Ibero-Latin Americans through Google Drive considering a database from the Iberolatinoamerican Radiosurgery Association. Results We found that the preference for the use of corticosteroids as prophylaxis for radiosurgery is associated with informal training in radiosurgery, and it was more used by radiation oncologists compared to neurosurgeons (p=0.023). Side effects can exceed the benefit of its use. Conclusions There is practically no literature on the use of corticosteroids as prophylaxis for radiation necrosis in stereotactic radiosurgery. This is a controversial inter- and intra-specialty issue, and its empirical use has a relatively high prevalence, making us reconsider the value of experience in a medical environment that should be fundamentally guided by evidence-based medicine.

Among the most egregious and discouraging problems of conservation is the rapidly escalating human-caused species extinction rate. "De-extinction" refers to the application of certain cutting-edge techniques for the supposed recovery of lost species and gives the impression that scientists, enlightened and empowered by the miracles of technology, are coming to the rescue. "De-extinction" is the latest example of a long play of language that has given conservation efforts a tragically false sense of accomplishment and has worsened the conservation crisis. De-extinction is the tip of an intellectual iceberg that sits atop of a host of profoundly questionable value systems, expectations, attitudes, and priorities that elude and bewitch critical reflection. It gives the impression that extinction is reversible and, thus, diminishes the gravity of the human annihilation of species. Here, we examine how the language of de-extinction influences attitudes, shapes thoughts and imagination, and creates ethical blindness. The language developing around "de-extinction" reveals what is in fact a profound intellectual crisis at the foundation of conservation. The underlying challenge is to find the language that will articulate and inspire the radical and indispensable change needed to come to grips with the value of nature.
