RESUMO
A 51-year-old man with a large right atrial myxoma underwent emergency surgical resection in our institute. The diagnosis of such tumors can be difficult, and their resection presents difficulties for the placement of the venous cannulae. We used a single cannula in the superior vena cava until fibrillation, and then we inserted a cannula into the inferior vena cava. We present this technique as a method of avoiding embolization.

We report 3 cases of cor triatriatum that were diagnosed late, in the 4th and 5th decades of life. The presentations of these 2 men and 1 woman varied substantially, both in anatomic and symptomatic aspects. The woman had an associated complex congenital anomaly, which is not uncommon in cases of cor triatriatum. We present our cases, along with a review of this rare congenital cardiac anomaly.

In vitro inhibition of goat cerebellar acetylcholinesterase by pure and commercial anticholinesterase pesticides clearly indicates a remarkably high inhibitory effect of commercial carbamate and organophosphate pesticides containing a lower percentage of the respective active ingredients comparable to that of the known anticholinesterase agents such as DFP and physostigmine. It may be presumed that injudicious use of commercial formulations conduce severe toxicity in the nontarget mammalian species, namely, goat, and this response of the brain acetylcholinesterase may be utilized as a reliable bioindicator of pesticidal contamination of the terrestrial environment.

Phenthoate- and carbofuran-containing insecticides are widely used by Indian farmers, thus endangering fish by exposing them to the hazards of a chronic low dose of these xenobiotics. Channa punctatus, cultivated under paddy-cum-fish culture programs, was treated with 176 ppb phenthoate, 333 ppb carbofuran, or a mixture of 88 ppb phenthoate plus 250 ppb carbofuran for 15 days. The rate of mortality was 10% in all treatments. These xenobiotics caused significant inhibition of brain acetylcholinesterase concomitant with low kidney iodide peroxidase activity and depressed blood thyroxine levels. It is surmised that phenthoate and carbofuran compounds are capable of significantly influencing the hormonal status of fish which is mediated via their target action on the nervous system.
