RESUMO

Magnetic fluctuations in transition metal oxides are a subject of intensive research because of the key role they are expected to play in the transition from the Mott insulator to the unconventional metallic phase of these materials, and also as drivers of superconductivity. Despite much effort, a clear link between magnetic fluctuations and the insulator-to-metal transition has not yet been established. Here we report the discovery of a compelling link between magnetic fluctuations and the insulator-to-metal transition in Ca(Ir1-xRux)O3 perovskites as a function of the substitution coefficient x. We show that when the material turns from insulator to metal, at a critical value of x ~ 0.3, magnetic fluctuations tend to change their character from antiferromagnetic, a Mott insulator phase, to ferromagnetic, an itinerant electron state with Hund's orbital coupling. These results are expected to have wide-ranging implications for our understanding of the unconventional properties of strongly correlated electrons systems.

RESUMO

We report on the study of insulator-to-metal transition in post-perovskite compound CaIrO3. It is discovered that a gradual chemical substitution of calcium by yttrium leads to the onset of strong metallic behavior in this compound. This observation is in stark contrast to BaIrO3, which preserves its Mott insulating behavior despite excess of the charge carriers due to yttrium doping. Magnetic measurements reveal that both compounds tend to exhibit magnetic character irrespective of the chemical substitution of Ca or Ba. We analyze these unusual observations in light of recent researches that suggest that CaIrO3 does not necessarily possess j = 1/2 ground state due to structural distortion. The insulator-to-metal transition in CaIrO3 will spur new researches to explore more exotic ground state, including superconductivity, in post-perovskite Mott insulators.

RESUMO

A simple high throughput micro-fluorescence in situ hybridisation technique (FISH) was used to detect chromosome 13 deletions (delta13), immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) rearrangements, t(11;14)(q13;q32), t(4;14)(p16;q32), t(14;16)(q23;q32), p53 loss, and numerical changes of chromosomes 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 17 in 228 cases of multiple myeloma (MM), including 33 asymptomatic/smouldering MM (SMM). The patients were not part of a clinical trial and were from 30 different hospitals. In all, 98.4% of cases were abnormal, with 43% having IgH rearrangements and 42% Delta13. The low incidence of IgH rearrangements was due to a decrease in this finding with age (P = 0.001) and the relatively high proportion of elderly patients in our study population (41% >70 years old). The incidence of specific IgH translocations was t(4;14) 11%, t(11;14) 16% and t(14;16) 3%. Univariate statistical testing showed delta13 (P = 0.002), and t(14;16) (P = 0.005) to be associated with shorter survival. This effect was exaggerated for patient's aged 70 years or under but no effect on survival was seen for those over 70 years. In younger patients t(4;14) (P = 0.044) and p53 deletion (P < 0.001) were also significant poor prognostic indicators. Multivariate analysis showed delta13 and t(14;16) to be independent prognostic variables when considered with age and clinical parameters.

RESUMO

In a 4-year period, 84 patients who were referred for a dipyridamole thallium-201 stress test to rule out significant coronary artery disease had normal scans. A dipyridamole study was recommended instead of exercise because of arthritis, severe obesity, peripheral vascular disease, pulmonary disease, other chronic illnesses, or combinations of these problems. All patients had three-view (i.e., anterior, shallow left anterior oblique, and steep left anterior oblique) planar thallium-201 imaging 10 minutes and 3.5 hours after administration of 0.6 mg/kg of intravenous dipyridamole. The patients were followed for 42 +/- 13 (range 1-58) months to document the cardiac event rate. Of the 84 patients with normal results, 14 died during the follow-up period from noncardiac causes. Three other patients died 29-51 months after the test due to an acute myocardial infarction, a probable acute myocardial infarction, and sudden cardiac death, respectively. Of the survivors, 5 suffered an acute myocardial infarction 28-50 months after the dipyridamole thallium scan and 1 had coronary artery bypass grafting due to increasing angina pectoris 58 months after the scan (overall cardiac event rate of 0.4% per year). Of the remaining 61 patients, 39 (64%) were asymptomatic, 20 (33%) had the same symptoms they had at the time of testing without significant deterioration, while 2 patients (3%) had deterioration of their chest pains but no cardiac complication. Thus, in this group of patients, a normal dipyridamole thallium-201 perfusion scan predicted a good cardiovascular outcome for at least 24 months following the test.
