RESUMO

This review explores the integration of wild grass-derived alleles into modern bread wheat breeding to tackle the challenges of climate change and increasing food demand. With a focus on synthetic hexaploid wheat, this review highlights the potential of genetic variability in wheat wild relatives, particularly Aegilops tauschii, for improving resilience to multifactorial stresses like drought, heat, and salinity. The evolutionary journey of wheat (Triticum spp.) from diploid to hexaploid species is examined, revealing significant genetic contributions from wild grasses. We also emphasize the importance of understanding incomplete lineage sorting in the genomic evolution of wheat. Grasping this information is crucial as it can guide breeders in selecting the appropriate alleles from the gene pool of wild relatives to incorporate into modern wheat varieties. This approach improves the precision of phylogenetic relationships and increases the overall effectiveness of breeding strategies. This review also addresses the challenges in utilizing the wheat wild genetic resources, such as the linkage drag and cross-compatibility issues. Finally, we culminate the review with future perspectives, advocating for a combined approach of high-throughput phenotyping tools and advanced genomic techniques to comprehensively understand the genetic and regulatory architectures of wheat under stress conditions, paving the way for more precise and efficient breeding strategies.

Objectives: Evidence-based prescribing is essential to optimize patient outcomes in cystitis. This requires knowledge of local antibiotic resistance rates. Diagnostic and Antimicrobial Stewardship (DASH) to Protect Antibiotics (https://dashuti.com/) is a multicentric mentorship program guiding centers in preparing, analyzing and disseminating local antibiograms to promote antimicrobial stewardship in community urinary tract infection. Here, we mapped the susceptibility profile of Escherichia coli from 22 Indian centers. Methods: These centers spanned 10 Indian states and three union territories. Antibiograms for urinary E. coli from the outpatient departments were collated. Standardization was achieved by regional online training; anomalies were resolved via consultation with study experts. Data were collated and analyzed. Results: Nationally, fosfomycin, with 94% susceptibility (inter-center range 83-97%), and nitrofurantoin, with 85% susceptibility (61-97%), retained the widest activity. The susceptibility rates were lower for co-trimoxazole (49%), fluoroquinolones (31%), and oral cephalosporins (26%). The rates for third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins were 46% and 52%, respectively, with 54% (33-58%) extended-spectrum ß-lactamase prevalence. Piperacillin-tazobactam (81%), amikacin (88%), and meropenem (88%) retained better activity; however, one center in Delhi recorded only 42% meropenem susceptibility. Susceptibility rates were mostly higher in South, West, and Northeast India; centers in the heavily populated Gangetic plains, across north and northwest India, had greater resistance. These findings highlight the importance of local antibiograms in guiding appropriate antimicrobial choices. Conclusions: Fosfomycin and nitrofurantoin are the preferred oral empirical choices for uncomplicated E. coli cystitis in India, although elevated resistance in some areas is concerning. Empiric use of fluoroquinolones and third-generation cephalosporins is discouraged, whereas piperacillin/tazobactam and aminoglycosides remain carbapenem-sparing parenteral agents.

The world's low-lying rice (Oryza sativa) cultivation areas are under threat of submergence or flash flooding due to global warming. Rice plants manifest a variety of physiological and morphological changes to cope with submergence and hypoxia, including lowering carbohydrate consumption, inhibiting shoot elongation, and forming a thicker leaf gas film during submergence. Functional studies have revealed that submergence tolerance in rice is mainly determined by an ethylene response factor (ERF) transcription factor-encoding gene, namely SUBMERGENCE 1A-1 (SUB1A-1) located in the SUB1 quantitative trait locus. The SUB1A-1-dependent submergence tolerance is manifested through hormonal signaling involving ethylene, gibberellic acid, brassinosteroid, auxin and jasmonic acid. Considerable progress has been made toward the introduction of SUB1A-1 into rice varieties through a conventional marker-assisted backcrossing approach. Here, we review the recent advances in the physiological, biochemical and molecular dynamics of rice submergence tolerance mediated by the 'quiescence strategy'. Thus, the present review aims to provide researchers with insights into the genetics of rice submergence tolerance and future perspectives for designing submergence-resilient plants for sustainable agriculture under the uncertainties of climate change.

Due to the increasing demand for high-quality and high fiber-yielding cotton (Gossypium spp.), research into the development of stress-resilient cotton cultivars has acquired greater significance. Various biotic and abiotic stressors greatly affect cotton production and productivity, posing challenges to the future of the textile industry. Moreover, the content and quality of cottonseed oil can also potentially be influenced by future environmental conditions. Apart from conventional methods, genetic engineering has emerged as a potential tool to improve cotton fiber quality and productivity. Identification and modification of genome sequences and the expression levels of yield-related genes using genetic engineering approaches have enabled to increase both the quality and yields of cotton fiber and cottonseed oil. Herein, we evaluate the significance and molecular mechanisms associated with the regulation of cotton agronomic traits under both normal and stressful environmental conditions. In addition, the importance of gossypol, a toxic phenolic compound in cottonseed that can limit consumption by animals and humans, is reviewed and discussed.

In the aftermaths of global warming, plants are more frequently exposed to the combination of heat stress and drought in natural conditions. Jasmonic acid (JA) has been known to modulate numerous plant adaptive responses to diverse environmental stresses. However, the function of JA in regulating plant responses to the combined effects of heat and drought remains underexplored. In this study, we elucidated the functions of JA in enhancing the combined heat and drought tolerance of soybean (Glycine max). Our results showed that priming with JA improved plant biomass, photosynthetic efficiency and leaf relative water content, which all together contributed to the improved performance of soybean plants under single and combined heat and drought conditions. Exposure to single and combined heat and drought conditions caused oxidative damage in soybean leaves. Priming soybean plants, which were exposed to single and combined heat and drought conditions, with JA, on the other hand, substantially quenched the reactive oxygen species-induced oxidative burden possibly by bolstering their antioxidant defense system. Together, our findings provide direct evidence of the JA-mediated protective mechanisms in maintaining the optimal photosynthetic rate and plant performance under combined heat and drought conditions.

RESUMO

Plant responses to drought are mediated by hormones like ABA (abscisic acid) and auxin. These hormones regulate plant drought responses by modulating various physiological and biological processes via cell signaling. ABA accumulation and signaling are central to plant drought responses. Auxin also regulates plant adaptive responses to drought, especially via signal transduction mediated by the interaction between ABA and auxin. In this review, we explored the interactive roles of ABA and auxin in the modulation of stomatal movement, root traits and accumulation of reactive oxygen species associated with drought tolerance.

International medical graduates (IMGs) tend to choose careers in geriatric psychiatry likely because high-quality training and robust mentorship opportunities from other IMGs are available. Geriatric psychiatry offers stable career prospects and opportunities to express humanitarian impulses by working closely with elders. IMGs currently constitute almost a quarter of the psychiatry workforce and approximately 53% of the geriatric psychiatry work force in the United States. However, the number of IMGs entering psychiatry residencies-and, subsequently, geriatric psychiatry fellowships-has recently declined. Overreliance on IMGs in the US geriatric psychiatric workforce means these shortages will further burden an already-limited geriatric mental health care workforce and further compromise US health system capacity to meet its elders' needs.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccines are highly immunogenic but cardiovascular effects of these vaccines have not been properly elucidated. OBJECTIVES: To determine impact of COVID-19 vaccination on mortality following acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS: This was a single center retrospective observation study among patients with AMI enrolled in the the North India ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NORIN-STEMI) registry. In all the enrolled patients, data regarding patient's vaccination status including details on type of vaccine, date of vaccination and adverse effects were obtained. All enrolled subjects were followed up for a period of six months. The primary outcome of the study was all-cause mortality both at one month and at six months of follow-up. Propensity-weighted score logistic regression model using inverse probability of treatment weighting was used to determine the impact of vaccination status on all-cause mortality. RESULTS: A total of 1578 subjects were enrolled in the study of whom 1086(68.8%) were vaccinated against COVID-19 while 492(31.2%) were unvaccinated. Analysis of the temporal trends of occurrence of AMI post vaccination did not show a specific clustering of AMI at any particular time. On 30-day follow-up, all-cause mortality occurred in 201(12.7%) patients with adjusted odds of mortality being significantly lower in vaccinated group (adjusted odds ratio[aOR]: 0.58, 95% CI: 0.47-0.71). Similarly, at six months of follow-up, vaccinated AMI group had lower odds of mortality(aOR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.44 to 0.65) as compared to non-vaccinated group. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 vaccines have shown to decrease all-cause mortality at 30 days and six months following AMI.

Background: Consultation-liaison psychiatry (C-LP) is an interface between physical and psychological health where the psychiatrists become a part of the medical team for a holistic approach in the treatment of the patient. Aims: Our study aimed to see the pattern and utility of C-LP services among inpatient referrals to the department of psychiatry. Settings and Design: This observational descriptive study recorded inpatient referrals to the department of psychiatry of a tertiary care hospital for 2 months. Subjects and Methods: The Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M. I. N. I.) was administered for identifying the comorbid psychiatric diagnoses. Results: Most of the received inpatient referrals were for male patients (73.7%) in the age group of 30-60 years (58%). Overall, the referral rate was significantly higher from the emergency department and intensive care units (ICU) (50%), followed by specialty (medicine and surgery) wards (20%) and super specialty (cardiology, gastroenterology, and oncology) wards (16%). Altered sensorium and restlessness were the most common reasons for referral (42%), followed by alcohol/drug withdrawal (21.6%), somatic complaints (7.3%), sadness of mood, disturbed sleep, and deliberate self-harm (6% each). Substance use disorders, including alcohol and opioid (32%), delirium (25%), and depression (19%), were among the most common psychiatric diagnoses seen in the referred patients. Conclusions: The pattern observed indicates that most inpatient referrals for psychological evaluation are received for altered sensorium from emergency and ICU than wards. The utility of C-LP helps to understand the reciprocal interdependence between the medical illness and the psychiatric comorbidity.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a genetically diverse blood-borne virus responsible for chronic hepatitis B. The HBV polymerase plays a key role in viral genome replication within the human body and has been identified as a potential drug target for chronic hepatitis B therapeutics. However, available nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors only target the reverse transcriptase domain of the HBV polymerase; they also pose resistance issues and require lifelong treatment that can burden patients financially. In this study, various chemical classes are reviewed that have been developed to target different domains of the HBV polymerase: Terminal protein, which plays a vital role in the formation of the viral DNA; Reverse transcriptase, which is responsible for the synthesis of the viral DNA from RNA, and; Ribonuclease H, which is responsible for degrading the RNA strand in the RNA-DNA duplex formed during the reverse transcription process. Host factors that interact with the HBV polymerase to achieve HBV replication are also reviewed; these host factors can be targeted by inhibitors to indirectly inhibit polymerase functionality. A detailed analysis of the scope and limitations of these inhibitors from a medicinal chemistry perspective is provided. The structure-activity relationship of these inhibitors and the factors that may affect their potency and selectivity are also examined. This analysis will be useful in supporting the further development of these inhibitors and in designing new inhibitors that can inhibit HBV replication more efficiently.

The reproductive stage of cotton (Gossypium sp.) is highly sensitive to waterlogging. The identification of potential elite upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) cultivar(s) having higher waterlogging tolerance is crucial to expanding cotton cultivation in the low-lying areas. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of waterlogging on the reproductive development of four elite upland cotton cultivars, namely, Rupali-1, CB-12, CB-13, and DM-3, against four waterlogging durations (e.g., 0, 3, 6, and 9-day). Waterlogging stress significantly impacted morpho-physiological, biochemical, and yield attributes of cotton. Two cotton cultivars, e.g., CB-12 and Rupali-1, showed the lowest reduction in plant height (6 and 9%, respectively) and boll weight (8 and 5%, respectively) at the highest waterlogging duration of 9 days. Physiological and biochemical data revealed that higher leaf chlorophyll, proline, and relative water contents, and lower malondialdehyde contents, particularly in CB-12 and Rupali-1, were positively correlated with yield. Notably, CB-12 and Rupali-1 had higher seed cotton weight (90.34 and 83.10 g, respectively), lint weight (40.12 and 39.32 g, respectively), and seed weight (49.47 and 43.78 g, respectively) per plant than CB-13 and DM-3 in response to the highest duration of waterlogging of 9 days. Moreover, extensive multivariate analyses like Spearman correlation and the principle component analysis revealed that CB-12 and Rupali-1 had greater coefficients in yield and physiological attributes at 9-day waterlogging, whereas CB-13 and DM-3 were sensitive cultivars in response to the same levels of waterlogging. Thus, CB-12 and Rupali-1 might be well adapted to the low-lying waterlogging-prone areas for high and sustained yield.

Drought is recognized as a paramount threat to sustainable agricultural productivity. This threat has grown more severe in the age of global climate change. As a result, finding a long-term solution to increase plants' tolerance to drought stress has been a key research focus. Applications of chemicals such as zinc (Zn) may provide a simpler, less time-consuming, and effective technique for boosting the plant's resilience to drought. The present study gathers persuasive evidence on the potential roles of zinc sulphate (ZnSO4·7H2O; 1.0 g Kg-1 soil) and zinc oxide (ZnO; 1.0 g Kg-1 soil) in promoting tolerance of cotton plants exposed to drought at the first square stage, by exploring various physiological, morphological, and biochemical features. Soil supplementation of ZnSO4 or ZnO to cotton plants improved their shoot biomass, root dry weight, leaf area, photosynthetic performance, and water-use efficiency under drought stress. Zn application further reduced the drought-induced accumulations of H2O2 and malondialdehyde, and electrolyte leakage in stressed plants. Antioxidant assays revealed that Zn supplements, particularly ZnSO4, reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation by increasing the activities of a range of ROS quenchers, such as catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, and guaiacol peroxidase, to protect the plants against ROS-induced oxidative damage during drought stress. Increased leaf relative water contents along with increased water-soluble protein contents may indicate the role of Zn in improving the plant's water status under water-deficient conditions. The results of the current study also suggested that, in general, ZnSO4 supplementation more effectively increased cotton drought tolerance than ZnO supplementation, thereby suggesting ZnSO4 as a potential chemical to curtail drought-induced detrimental effects in water-limited soil conditions.

Crop varieties with a high yield are most desirable in the present context of the ever-growing human population. Mostly, the yield traits are governed by a complex of numerous molecular and genetic facets modulated by various quantitative trait loci (QTLs). With the identification and molecular characterizations of yield-associated QTLs over recent years, the central role of phytohormones in regulating plant yield is becoming more apparent. Most often, different groups of phytohormones work in close association to orchestrate yield attributes. Understanding this cross talk would thus provide new venues for phytohormone pyramiding by editing a single gene or QTL(s) for yield improvement. Here, we review a few important findings to integrate the knowledge on the roles of auxin, brassinosteroid and cytokinin and how a single gene or a QTL could govern cross talk among multiple phytohormones to determine the yield traits.

Objective: To study the epidemiological characteristics of the pandemic by describing the clinical profile of the COVID-19 patients presenting to a super specialty hospital. Methods: This was a descriptive study using medical records of patients who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction between 17th March and 15th January 2021 while maintaining confidentiality. The clinical and demographic data of all the patients were entered in a Microsoft Excel and statistical analysis was done using SPSS 21 software. Regression analysis was performed and a P value < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: A total of 3534 patients were enrolled in this study aged 9-96 years. Among patients with symptoms, fever and cough were the most common presenting symptoms, while 5.6% of the patients were asymptomatic. Hypertension was the most common comorbidity (37%), while no comorbidities were present in 43.0% of the participants and this was statistically significant for age (P = 0.000). Among patient outcomes, >50% of patients were in home isolation, while 11% of patients had a fatal outcome. Elder age group had a higher proportion of expiry among outcomes (P <= 0.001). Most patients had a hospital stay of 9-11 days. A total of 63 health workers were included with male: female ratio being 3.5:1. Conclusion: Our study reflects that majority of the positive cases that presented to the hospital had mild/moderate symptoms. We believe that appropriate triaging of patients followed by early institution of medicine and good critical care services may help to control this epidemic.

The continuous growth of the global population and the increase in the amount of arid land has severely constrained agricultural crop production. To solve this problem, many researchers have attempted to increase productivity through the efficient distribution of energy; however, the direct relationship between the plant vasculature, specifically phloem development, and crop yield is not well established. Here, we demonstrate that an optimum increase in phloem-transportation capacity by reducing SIJUL expression leads to improved sink strength in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). SIJUL, a negative regulator of phloem development, suppresses the translation of a positive regulator of phloem development, SlSMXL5. The suppression of SlJUL increases the number of phloem cells and sucrose transport, but only an optimal reduction of SlJUL function greatly enhances sink strength in tomato, improving fruit setting, and yield contents by 37% and 60%, respectively. We show that the increment in phloem cell number confers spare transport capacity. Our results suggest that the control of phloem-transport capacity within the threshold could enhance the commitment of photosynthates to instigate yield improvement.

Environmental justice issues have been incrementally but consistently covered within this journal in the last two decades. This article reviews theoretical and empirical approaches to justice in INEA scholarship in order to identify trends and draw lessons for the interpretation and implementation of the 2030 Agenda and for living within environmental limits. Our review traces how justice considerations were initially covered within new institutionalist scholarship on collective action and social practices, to conceptualizing justice as 'access and allocation', to newer notions of planetary justice. We link these trends to scholarship on diverse epistemologies and typologies of justice, including conservative, corrective, distributive and procedural justice, and examine their operationalization within the empirical domains of climate, water and sustainable development. In concluding, we draw out implications for the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. We argue that a just approach is essential to living within environmental limits, with greater synergies needed between collective action and social practice approaches. While justice can be unpacked for practical and political reasons into access and allocation, we find that (procedural) access considerations are more politically palatable in practice than a concern with allocation (distributive justice), which remains much more contested. As such, dominant approaches promote 'conservative' or thin market-based notions of justice. We conclude by noting that just allocation is a precondition to just access. A failure to prioritize and achieve more corrective and distributive forms of justice will, without doubt, contribute to exacerbating global ecological degradation.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to identify published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the use of anticonvulsants for the prevention and/or treatment of delirium among older adults. METHODS: A comprehensive search of databases: MEDLINE ALL (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), PsycINFO (Ovid), Web of Science Core Collection and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled was conducted. RESULTS: The search identified four RCTs that evaluated the use of anticonvulsants among older adults with delirium. One RCT evaluated the perioperative use of gabapentin among individuals undergoing spinal surgery and the development of postoperative delirium. One RCT evaluated the relationship between the use of perioperative gabapentin and the development of postoperative delirium among individuals undergoing spinal surgery and hip and knee arthroplasty. Two post-hoc analyses of RCTs evaluated the use of gabapentin and pregabalin among individuals undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA). The perioperative use of gabapentin reduced the incidence of postoperative delirium among older adults undergoing spinal surgery. The perioperative use of gabapentin did not reduce the rates, severity or duration of postoperative delirium among older adults who were undergoing spine and hip and knee arthroplasty. The perioperative use of gabapentin did not reduce the incidence or duration of postoperative delirium among older adults undergoing elective TKA. The perioperative use of pregabalin did not reduce the incidence of postoperative delirium among older adults undergoing elective THA. Gabapentin and pregabalin were well tolerated among the individuals enrolled in these trials. There were no RCTs identified that evaluated the use of other anticonvulsants for the prevention and/or treatment of delirium among older adults. CONCLUSIONS: Based on current evidence, the routine use of anticonvulsants for the prevention and/or treatment of delirium among older adults cannot be recommended.

Plants modulate the metabolism of phytohormones and their signaling pathways under drought to regulate physiological and adaptive responses. Jasmonic acid (JA) is one of the major classes of phytohormones and has been found to potentially enhance plant tolerance to various abiotic stresses, including drought. The JASMONATE ZINC FINGER INFLORESCENCE MERISTEM (ZIM)-DOMAIN (JAZ) proteins are the negative regulators in the JA-signaling pathway. The JAZ protein family is explicit to plants and involved in the regulation of numerous biological processes, including drought-responsive mechanisms. In this review, we synthesize the mechanistic insight into the roles of JAZ proteins in the regulation of drought responses by connecting the JA-signaling with abscisic acid-signaling.

Fetus in fetu (FIF) is a very rare condition in which malformed fetus is found within the body of a living twin, most commonly within the retroperitoneum. It is a parasitic fetal twin of a diamniotic, monozygotic type. It should be differentiated from teratoma by the presence of organized vertebral column and appropriately arranged other organs or limbs around it. There is no such axial arrangement in teratoma, which has also got definite malignant potential. We report a case of FIF in a 21-year-old lady who presented late with nonspecific abdominal symptoms. Preoperative diagnosis of FIF in this case was made on computed tomography, and the patient underwent exploratory laparotomy with complete excision of mass. The excised mass in a sac was proven to be FIF on the basis of gross and histopathological examination. Surgical excision is the ideal treatment even teratoma being the differential diagnosis.
