RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mortality of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains high. Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) has revolutionized OHCA treatment, but our understanding of the ECPR responder's clinical profile is incomplete. Carotid artery stenosis (CAS) is a well-established cardiovascular disease risk factor. The impact of CAS on OHCA outcomes remains unelucidated. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether CAS burden affects the outcomes of OHCA patients treated with ECPR. METHODS: This study included patients with OHCA admitted for ECPR consideration, who had carotid ultrasonography performed. A numeric scale was applied to the plaque to create a CAS burden numeric scale. The primary outcome of the study was survival at discharge, compared among the different degrees of CAS. Neurologically intact survival and surrogate markers of neurologic injury were the secondary study endpoints. To assess the independent effect of CAS burden on survival to hospital discharge, we conducted a logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Between 2019 and 2023, carotid ultrasonography was performed on 163 patients who were admitted for refractory OHCA. CAS burden was equally distributed between the right and left carotid arteries. Logistic regression analysis indicated that the CAS burden was significantly associated with both overall and neurologically intact survival at discharge (p = 0.004). A linear relationship between the CAS burden and neuron-specific and S-100 levels was identified. Patients with normal carotids were significantly less likely to have encephalopathy on electroencephalograms. CONCLUSION: CAS burden independently predicts the risk for worse survival and neurologic outcomes in patients suffering refractory OHCA who are treated with ECPR.

RESUMO

To facilitate the analysis of pattern formation and the related phase transitions in Bose-Einstein condensates, we present an explicit approximate mapping from the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation with cubic nonlinearity to a phase field crystal (PFC) model. This approximation is valid close to the superfluid-supersolid phase transition boundary. The simplified PFC model permits the exploration of bifurcations and phase transitions via numerical path continuation employing standard software. While revealing the detailed structure of the bifurcations present in the system, we demonstrate the existence of localized states in the PFC approximation. Finally, we discuss how higher-order nonlinearities change the structure of the bifurcation diagram representing the transitions found in the system.

RESUMO

Time delayed dynamical systems have proven to be a fertile framework for the study of physical phenomena. In natural sciences, their uses have been limited to the study of dissipative dynamics. In this Letter, we demonstrate the existence of nonlinear reversible conservative time delayed systems. We consider the example of a dispersive microcavity containing a Kerr medium coupled to a distant external mirror. At low energies and in the long delay limit, a multiscale analysis shows the equivalence with the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We unveil some of the symmetries and conserved quantities, as well as bright temporal solitons. While elastic collisions occur for shallow wave packets, we observe the lack of integrability at higher energies. We recover the Lugiato-Lefever equation in the weakly dissipative regime.

RESUMO

We analyze the effect of optical feedback on the dynamics of an external-cavity passively mode-locked surface-emitting laser operating in the regime of temporal localized structures. Depending on the ratio between the cavity round trip time and the feedback delay, we show experimentally that feedback acts as a solution selector that either reinforces or hinders the appearance of one of the multistable harmonic arrangements of pulses. Our theoretical analysis reproduces well the experiment and allows us to evidence asymmetrical resonance tongues due to the parity symmetry-breaking induced by gain depletion.

RESUMO

The time-delayed Adler equation is the simplest model for an injected semiconductor laser with coherent injection and optical feedback. It is, however, able to reproduce the existence of topological localized structures (LSs) and their rich interactions. In this paper, we perform the first extended bifurcation analysis of this model and we explore the mechanisms by which LSs emerge. We also derive the effective equations governing the motion of distant LSs and we stress how the lack of parity in time-delayed systems leads to exotic, non-reciprocal, interactions between topological localized states.

RESUMO

In this Letter, we study theoretically a new setup allowing for the generation of temporal localized states (TLSs) and frequency combs. The setup is compact (a few centimeters) and can be implemented using established technologies, while offering tunable repetition rates and potentially high power operation. It consists of a vertically emitting micro-cavity, operated in the Gires-Tournois regime, containing a Kerr medium strong time-delayed optical feedback, and detuned optical injection. We disclose sets of multistable dark and bright TLSs coexisting on their respective bistable homogeneous backgrounds.

RESUMO

Time-delayed dynamical systems materialize in situations where distant, pointwise, nonlinear nodes exchange information that propagates at a finite speed. However, they are considered devoid of dispersive effects, which are known to play a leading role in pattern formation and wave dynamics. We show how dispersion may appear naturally in delayed systems and we exemplify our result by studying theoretically and experimentally the influence of third order dispersion in a system composed of coupled optical microcavities. Dispersion-induced pulse satellites emerge asymmetrically and destabilize the mode-locking regime.

RESUMO

Cycles of Cdc53/Cullin1 rubylation (a.k.a NEDDylation) protect ubiquitin-E3 SCF (Skp1-Cullin1-F-box protein) complexes from self-destruction and play an important role in mediating the ubiquitination of key protein substrates involved in cell cycle progression, development, and survival. Cul1 rubylation is balanced by the COP9 signalosome (CSN), a multi-subunit derubylase that shows 1:1 paralogy to the 26S proteasome lid. The turnover of SCF substrates and their relevance to various diseases is well studied, yet, the extent by which environmental perturbations influence Cul1 rubylation/derubylation cycles per se is still unclear. In this study, we show that the level of cellular oxidation serves as a molecular switch, determining Cullin1 rubylation/derubylation ratio. We describe a mutant of the proteasome lid subunit, Rpn11 that exhibits accumulated levels of Cullin1-Rub1 conjugates, a characteristic phenotype of csn mutants. By dissecting between distinct phenotypes of rpn11 mutants, proteasome and mitochondria dysfunction, we were able to recognize the high reactive oxygen species (ROS) production during the transition of cells into mitochondrial respiration, as a checkpoint of Cullin1 rubylation in a reversible manner. Thus, the study adds the rubylation cascade to the list of cellular pathways regulated by redox homeostasis.

RESUMO

Temporal localized states (TLSs) are individually addressable structures traveling in optical resonators. They can be used to obtain bits of information and generate frequency combs with tunable spectral density. We show that a pair of specially designed nonlinear mirrors, a 1/2 vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser and a semiconductor saturable absorber, coupled in self-imaging conditions, can lead to the generation of such TLSs. Our results indicate how a conventional passive mode-locking scheme can be adapted to provide a robust and simple system emitting TLSs and paves the way towards the observation of three dimensional confined states, the so-called light bullets.

RESUMO

The Brusselator reaction-diffusion model is a paradigm for the understanding of dissipative structures in systems out of equilibrium. In the first part of this paper, we investigate the formation of stationary localized structures in the Brusselator model. By using numerical continuation methods in two spatial dimensions, we establish a bifurcation diagram showing the emergence of localized spots. We characterize the transition from a single spot to an extended pattern in the form of squares. In the second part, we incorporate delayed feedback control and show that delayed feedback can induce a spontaneous motion of both localized and periodic dissipative structures. We characterize this motion by estimating the threshold and the velocity of the moving dissipative structures. This article is part of the theme issue 'Dissipative structures in matter out of equilibrium: from chemistry, photonics and biology (part 2)'.

RESUMO

Recently, a mechanism of formation of light bullets (LBs) in wide-aperture passively mode-locked lasers was proposed. The conditions for existence and stability of these bullets, found in the long cavity limit, were studied theoretically under the mean field (MF) approximation using a Haus-type model equation. In this paper, we relax the MF approximation and study LB formation in a model of a wide-aperture three section laser with a long diffractive section and short absorber and gain sections. To this end, we derive a non-local delay-differential equation (NDDE) model and demonstrate by means of numerical simulations that this model supports stable LBs. We observe that the predictions about the regions of existence and stability of the LBs made previously using MF laser models agree well with the results obtained using the NDDE model. Moreover, we demonstrate that the general conclusions based upon the Haus model that regard the robustness of the LBs remain true in the NDDE model valid beyond the MF approximation, when the gain, losses and diffraction per cavity round trip are not small perturbations anymore. This article is part of the theme issue 'Dissipative structures in matter out of equilibrium: from chemistry, photonics and biology (part 1)'.

RESUMO

We present a modern approach for the analysis of passively mode-locked semiconductor lasers that allows for efficient parameter sweeps and time jitter analysis. It permits accessing the ultralow repetition rate regime where pulses become localized states. The analysis including slow (e.g., thermal) processes or transverse dynamics becomes feasible. Our method bridges the divide between the phenomenological, yet highly efficient, pulse iterative model that is the Haus master equation, and the more involved first principle descriptions relying on time-delayed equations. Our iterative functional mapping exploits the fundamental division of the mode-locking regime between fast and slow stages and allows computing the dynamics only in the pulse vicinity. Reductions of the simulation times and of the memory footprint up to two orders of magnitude are demonstrated. Finally, the mapping also provides a general framework for deducing the Haus master equation from first principle models based upon delayed differential equations.

RESUMO

We investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of cavity solitons in a broad area vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with saturable absorption subjected to time-delayed optical feedback. Using a combination of analytical, numerical, and path continuation methods, we analyze the bifurcation structure of stationary and moving cavity solitons and identify two different types of traveling localized solutions, corresponding to slow and fast motion. We show that the delay impacts both stationary and moving solutions either causing drifting and wiggling dynamics of initially stationary cavity solitons or leading to stabilization of intrinsically moving solutions. Finally, we demonstrate that the fast cavity solitons can be associated with a lateral mode-locking regime in a broad-area laser with a single longitudinal mode.

RESUMO

We study the dynamics of an array of nearest-neighbor coupled spatially distributed systems each generating a periodic sequence of short pulses. We demonstrate that, unlike a solitary system generating a train of equidistant pulses, an array of such systems can produce a sequence of clusters of closely packed pulses, with the distance between individual pulses depending on the coupling phase. This regime associated with the formation of locally coupled pulse trains bounded due to a balance of attraction and repulsion between them is different from the pulse bound states reported earlier in different laser, plasma, chemical, and biological systems. We propose a simplified analytical description of the observed phenomenon, which is in good agreement with the results of direct numerical simulations of a model system describing an array of coupled mode-locked lasers.

RESUMO

We investigate a control of the motion of localized structures (LSs) of light by means of delay feedback in the transverse section of a broad area nonlinear optical system. The delayed feedback is found to induce a spontaneous motion of a solitary LS that is stationary and stable in the absence of feedback. We focus our analysis on an experimentally relevant system, namely the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). We first present an experimental demonstration of the appearance of LSs in a 80 µm aperture VCSEL. Then, we theoretically investigate the self-mobility properties of the LSs in the presence of a time-delayed optical feedback and analyse the effect of the feedback phase and the carrier lifetime on the delay-induced spontaneous drift instability of these structures. We show that these two parameters affect strongly the space-time dynamics of two-dimensional LSs. We derive an analytical formula for the threshold associated with drift instability of LSs and a normal form equation describing the slow time evolution of the speed of the moving structure.

RESUMO

Recently, a novel type of spin-torque nano-oscillators driven by pure spin current generated via the spin Hall effect was demonstrated. Here we report the study of the effects of external microwave signals on these oscillators. Our results show that they can be efficiently synchronized by applying a microwave signal at approximately twice the frequency of the auto-oscillation, which opens additional possibilities for the development of novel spintronic devices. We find that the synchronization exhibits a threshold determined by magnetic fluctuations pumped above their thermal level by the spin current, and is significantly influenced by the nonlinear self-localized nature of the auto-oscillatory mode.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To confirm the key role of vascular malformation by ultrasound examination and to make a more detailed study of the manifestations of dysnephro- and angiogenesis. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study enrolled 34 children aged 3 days to 7 years with congenital hydronephrosis, who were divided into 3 groups in accordance with the degree of renal hemodynamic disorders, the criterion for which was a resistive index (RI). RESULTS: The performed electron microscopic study revealed the signs of malformed vessels of all diameters, as well as hypoplastic changes in the renal parenchyma in children of all ages in all the groups. The most significant ultrastructural signs demonstrating a close correlation between dysangio- and dysnephrogenetic processes are the uniformity of structural failure in the glomerular and arteriolar basement membrane, which shows up in the irregularity of its thickness and obliteration of its layers, as well as the immaturity of endothelial cells of both glomerular and arteriolar capillaries (large sizes and a round shape). The important factor confirming their relationship is a direct correlation between the increased RI in all branches of the renal artery as hypoplastic changes progress in the parenchyma of hydronephrotic kidneys. CONCLUSION: The investigation demonstrated the interdependence of dysangio- and dysnephrotic processes in children with congenital hydronephrosis.

RESUMO

We report on a novel behavior of solitary localized structures in a real Swift-Hohenberg equation subjected to a delayed feedback. We shall show that variation in the product of the delay time and the feedback strength leads to nontrivial instabilities resulting in the formation of oscillons, soliton rings, labyrinth patterns, or moving structures. We provide a bifurcation analysis of the delayed system and derive a system of order parameter equations explicitly describing the temporal behavior of the localized structure in the vicinity of the bifurcation point. We demonstrate that a normal form of the bifurcation, responsible for the emergence of moving solitary structures, can be obtained and show that spontaneous motion to the lowest order occurs without change of the shape.

RESUMO

The effects of smoking on the contents of the apoptosis markers Bcl-2 and p53 proteins in blood plasma; the activity of the antioxidant (AO) enzymes Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GP), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and catalase; and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in erythrocytes from healthy donors and cancer patients were studied. Two groups of donors were revealed among healthy smokers: one with high SOD and GP activities and high Bcl-2 protein levels and the other with lower Bcl-2 levels compared with those found in nonsmokers. In the group of cancer patients (both smokers and nonsmokers), significantly increased p53 protein levels and increased activity of GST were found. A negative correlation between MDA and GST in the group of smoking healthy donors and a positive correlation between MDA and p53 in cancer patients were found. The results suggest a relationship between the components of enzymatic defence and lipid peroxidation and the content of apoptosis regulator proteins in healthy smokers and cancer patients.

RESUMO

We investigate the stability of the localized stationary solutions of a three-component reaction-diffusion system with one activator and two inhibitors. A change of the time constants of the inhibitors can lead to a destabilization of the stationary solution. The special case we are interested in is that the breathing mode becomes unstable first and the stationary dissipative soliton undergoes a bifurcation from a stationary to a "breathing" state. This situation is analyzed performing a two-time-scale expansion in the vicinity of the bifurcation point thereby obtaining the corresponding amplitude equation. Also numerical simulations are carried out showing good agreement with the analytical predictions.
