RESUMO

The development of dressings based on electrospun membranes with polymers and plant extracts is an interesting approach to skin regeneration, providing elements to prevent contamination and a matrix that accelerates the healing process. We developed a membrane composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), gel and Aloe vera peel extract via the electrospinning technique. Additionally, an optimal ratio of PVP/Av gel/Av skin extract was determined to facilitate membrane formation. Electrospun membranes were obtained with fiber diameters of 1403 ± 57.4 nm for the PVP and 189.2 ± 11.4 nm for PVP/Av gel/Av peel extract, confirming that the use of extracts generally reduced the fiber diameter. The incorporation of gel and peel extract of Aloe vera into the electrospun membrane was analyzed via FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopies. FTIR revealed the presence of functional groups associated with phenolic compounds such as aloin, aloe-emodin, emodin and aloesin, which was confirmed by UV-Vis, revealing absorption bands corresponding to aloin, phenols and carbonyl groups. This finding provides evidence of the effective integration and prevalence of bioactive compounds of a phenolic and polysaccharide nature from the gel and the Av skin extract in the electrospun fibers, resulting in an advanced membrane that could improve and accelerate the healing process and protect the wound from bacterial infections.

OBJECTIVE: In oral rehabilitation, a full mouth minimal invasive treatment can represent a major challenge for the patient and the dentist. The purpose of this article is to present a new technique to restore eroded teeth and recover the vertical dimension with a simple and predictable technique. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Occlusal tabletop restorations are a suitable conservative option to restore anatomy and vertical dimension augmentation but highly sensitive. The cementation of those restorations without stable landmarks, the cement excess removal, the insertion path, or the time needed are some of the difficulties can be faced. Now a days with the new CAD-CAM techniques is possible to develop a new occlusal tabletop manufacturing alternative utilizing 3D-printed technology by unifying the restorations with a customized connector that allows us to print several onlays at same time, as a single object, also being cemented at once. CONCLUSIONS: This protocol reduces the technique sensitivity of a vertical dimension oral rehabilitation process, reduce the chair time, enhancing the patient-comfort and delivers a unique way to restore dental lost anatomy as a definitive or temporary way with printing materials. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: With the advent of new CAD-CAM 3D printing materials, which are increasingly versatile and gaining favor among clinicians, it is now possible to address complex clinical situations with greater predictability. This technology enables the development of treatment solutions that are both effective and efficient, consequently reducing clinical time for the patient.

The chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect can distinguish between the spin of electrons as they pass through chiral molecules by backscattering one of the spin components. Herein, we explore the role of the CISS effect in time-correlated single-photon counting measurements to detect DNA hybridization. We observe that the average lifetime of optical excited states of quantum dots attached to double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) varies with directions of the applied magnetic field. Specifically, the difference in the nonradiative average decay lifetime for the two orientations of the applied magnetic field is 2.21 ns in the case of hybridized strands, which is 130 times higher than that observed with quantum dots attached to single-strand DNA. Additionally, we investigate the application of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for detecting double-stranded DNA in the presence of a magnetic field, establishing a theoretical framework to substantiate the experimental evidence of magnetic field-dependent FTIR spectroscopy for dsDNA.

RESUMO

The coupling of different 2D materials (2DMs) to form van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) is a powerful strategy for adjusting the electronic properties of 2D semiconductors, for applications in opto-electronics and quantum computing. 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 ) represents an archetypical semiconducting, monolayer thick versatile platform for the generation of hybrid vdWH with tunable charge transport characteristics through its interfacing with molecules and assemblies thereof. However, the physisorption of (macro)molecules on 2D MoS2 yields hybrids possessing a limited thermal stability, thereby jeopardizing their technological applications. Herein, the rational design and optimized synthesis of 2D covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs) for the generation of MoS2 /2D-COF vdWHs exhibiting strong interlayer coupling effects are reported. The high crystallinity of the 2D-COF films makes it possible to engineer an ultrastable periodic doping effect on MoS2 , boosting devices' field-effect mobility at room temperature. Such a performance increase can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the efficient interfacial electron transfer process and the pronounced suppression of MoS2 's lattice vibration. This proof-of-concept work validates an unprecedented approach for the efficient modulation of the electronic properties of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides toward high-performance (opto)electronics for CMOS digital circuits.

We analyze from a theoretical perspective recent experiments where chiral discrimination in biological systems was established using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Even though intermolecular forces involved in AFM measurements have different origins, i.e., electrostatic, bonding, exchange, and multipole interactions, the key molecular forces involved in enantiospecific biorecognition are electronic spin exchange and van der Waals (vdW) dispersion forces, which are sensitive to spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and space-inversion symmetry breaking in chiral molecules. The vdW contribution to chiral discrimination emerges from the inclusion of SOI and spin fluctuations due to the chiral-induced selectivity effect, a result we have recently demonstrated theoretically. Considering these two enantiospecific contributions, we show that the AFM results regarding chiral recognition can be understood in terms of a simple physical model that describes the different adhesion forces associated with different electron spin polarization generated in the (DD), (LL), and (DL) enantiomeric pairs, as arising from the spin part of the exchange and vdW contributions. The model can successfully produce physically reasonable parameters accounting for the vdW and exchange interaction strength, accounting for the chiral discrimination effect. This fact has profound implications in biorecognition where the relevant intermolecular interactions in the intermediate-distance regime are clearly connected to vdW forces.

Abstract Introduction During the coronavirus (SARS-Cov-2) pandemic, restrictive measures were implemented to reduce contagion. However, severely decreasing social interaction also negatively impacted the economy, particularly that of indigenous groups. Objective This article seeks to understand the emotional distress identified by a group of indigenous women residents, as well as their self-care practices, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico City. Method A digital qualitative study was undertaken since the fieldwork was conducted in person and online, using various Internet platforms, which served as a field scenario, data collection tool and a means of continuous connection with subjects. Results Anecdotal records were obtained from the subjects, who identified categorizations in the collective organization of the indigenous group, which became a support network for mobilizing official material resources. Information was also obtained on the way the women engaged in the self-care of their emotional distress in a range of ways with a sense of immediacy, through physical, spiritual, herbal, and psychological resources. They observed how women managed to cope with their situation and continue caring for and supporting their families to enable them to get by, distinguishing between those who were providers and those who were dependent on another provider. Discussion and conclusion The pandemic, together with social restrictions, created stressful situations, causing various emotional problems among the indigenous collective. Nevertheless, their capacity for self-management and self-care enabled them to cope with these conditions in the midst of structural contexts of violence, poverty, and social exclusion.


Resumen Introducción Durante la pandemia del nuevo coronavirus (SARS-Cov-2) se instauraron diferentes medidas restrictivas con la finalidad de disminuir los contagios. Sin embargo, al reducir severamente las interacciones sociales también se produjo un impacto negativo en la economía, especialmente en los grupos indígenas. Objetivo Este artículo busca conocer los malestares emocionales identificados por un colectivo de mujeres indígenas residentes, así como sus prácticas de auto-atención, durante la pandemia por COVID-19 en la CDMX. Método Se desarrolló una investigación cualitativa digital ya que el trabajo de campo fue presencial y en línea, así como en diferentes plataformas de la red de internet, las cuales fungieron como escenario de campo, herramienta de recopilación de datos y un dispositivo de conexión constante con los informantes Resultados Se obtuvieron registros anecdóticos de las participantes, que identificaron: categorizaciones en la organización colectiva del grupo indígena, convirtiéndose en red de apoyo que movilizó recursos materiales oficiales; cómo las mujeres practicaron la auto-atención de sus malestares emocionales de manera variada y con un sentido de inmediatez, mediante recursos físicos, espirituales, herbolarios, psicológicos y el saber aguantarse para sobrellevar su situación, y continuar cuidando y apoyando a sus familias a salir adelante, diferenciando entre mujeres proveedoras y las dependientes de otro proveedor. Discusión y conclusión La pandemia junto con las restricciones sociales, generaron situaciones estresantes, desencadenando diversas problemáticas emocionales en el colectivo indígena, pero su capacidad de autogestión y autocuidado les permitió sobrellevar tales condiciones en medio de contextos estructurales de violencia, pobreza y exclusión social.

OBJECTIVES: Several predictive models exist for estimating the postoperative risks of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair, although no particular tool has seen widespread use. We present the results of a multicenter, historic cohort study comparing the predictive capacity of the psoas muscle area (PMA), radiodensity (PMD), and lean muscle area (LMA) as surrogate markers of sarcopenia, over short- and long-term outcomes after AAA repair, compared to the mFI-5 and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) scales. METHODS: Retrospective review was conducted of all consecutive AAA elective repair cases (open or endovascular) in three tertiary-care centers from 2014 to 2019. Cross-sectional PMA, PMD, and LMA at the mid-body of the L3 vertebra were measured by two independent operators in the preoperative computed tomography. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to determine optimal cutoff values. Bivariate analysis, logistic regression, and Cox's proportional hazards models were built to examine the relationship between baseline variables and postoperative mortality, long-term mortality, and complications. RESULTS: 596 patients were included (mean age 72.7 ± 8 years, 95.1% male, 66.9% EVAR). Perioperative mortality was 2.3% (EVAR 1.2% vs open repair 4.6%, p = .015), and no independent predictors could be identified in the multivariate analysis. Conversely, an age over 74 years old (OR 1.84 95%CI 1.25-2.70), previous heart diseases (OR 1.62 95%CI 1.13-2.32), diabetes mellitus (OR 1.61 95%CI 1.13-2.32), and a PMD value over 66 HU (OR 0.58 95%CI 0.39-0.84) acted as independent predictors of long-term mortality in the Cox's proportional hazards model. Heart diseases (congestive heart failure or coronary artery disease), serum creatinine levels over 1.05 mg/dL, and an aneurysm diameter over 60 mm were independent predictors of major complications. CONCLUSION: Surrogate markers of sarcopenia had a poor predictive profile for postoperative mortality after AAA repair in our sample. However, PMD stood out as an independent predictor of long-term mortality. This finding can guide future research and should be confirmed in larger datasets.

In this research, we explore sequence-dependent chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) in double-stranded (ds)-DNA using time-correlated single-photon counting and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy supplemented by tight-binding calculations of the phenomenon for the first time. The average lifetime of the photo-excited electrons in a Quantum Dot-DNA system is influenced by the CISS effect generated by the DNA molecule, and the difference in average time decay of electrons was found to be 345 ps for opposite polarity ("UP" and "DOWN") of spins due to the CISS effect. Moreover, the yield of spin-polarized electrons due to the CISS effect was reduced by more than 35% from perfect DNA to DNA with point mutations. Remarkably, by employing a tight binding method combined with Green's function formalism for transport, simulations of the process support the observed experimental trends. Our results provide a basic understanding of the sequence-specific spin-dependent electron transfer through ds-DNA. These results would help to build spin-based next-generation DNA sensors.

We address the electron-spin-phonon coupling in an effective model Hamiltonian for DNA to assess its role in spin transfer involved in the Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) effect. The envelope function approach is used to describe semiclassical electron transfer in a tight-binding model of DNA at half filling in the presence of intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. Spin-phonon coupling arises from the orbital-configuration dependence of the spin-orbit interaction. We find spin-phonon coupling only for the acoustic modes, while the optical modes exhibit electron-phonon interaction without coupling to spin. We derive an effective Hamiltonian whose eigenstates carry spin currents that are protected by spin-inactive stretching optical modes. As optical phonons interact more strongly than acoustic phonons, side buckling and tilting optical base modes will be more strongly associated with decoherence, which allows for the two terminal spin filtering effects found in CISS.

BACKGROUND: Young people have the highest rate of drug use worldwide. Recent data from Mexico in this population show that the prevalence of illicit drug use doubled between 2011 and 2016 (2.9%-6.2%), with marijuana being the one with the highest increase (2.4%-5.3%), but also point out that alcohol and tobacco use have remained steady or decreased. Mexican adolescents are at high risk for drug use owing to a low perception of risk and the availability of drugs. Adolescence is an ideal period to reduce or prevent risky behaviors using evidence-based strategies. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to test the short-term effectiveness of a mobile intervention app ("What Happens if you Go Too Far?" ["¿Qué pasa si te pasas?"]) that seeks to increase risk perception of tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use in a sample of Mexican high school students. METHODS: A nonexperimental evaluation based on pretest-posttest design was used to measure the effectiveness of a preventive intervention using a mobile app, "What Happens If You Go Too Far?" The dimensions analyzed were knowledge of drugs and their effects, life skills, self-esteem, and risk perception. The intervention was conducted on a high school campus with 356 first-year students. RESULTS: The sample included 359 first-year high school students (mean 15, SD 0.588 years; women: 224/359, 62.4% men: 135/359, 37.6%). The intervention increased the overall risk perception of tobacco (χ24=21.6; P<.001) and alcohol use (χ24=15.3; P<.001). There was no significant difference in the perception that it is dangerous to smoke 5 cigarettes, and there was a marginal difference in the perception that it is very dangerous to smoke 1 cigarette or to use alcohol or marijuana. We used a generalized estimating equation method to determine the impact of the variables on risk perception. The results showed that knowledge about smoking increased the risk perception of smoking 1 cigarette (odds ratio [OR] 1.1065, 95% CI 1.013-1.120; P=.01), and that knowledge about marijuana use (OR 1.109, 95% CI 1.138-1.185; P=.002) and self-esteem (OR 1.102, 95% CI 1.007-1.206; P=.04) produced significant increases in the risk perception of consuming 5 cigarettes. Resistance to peer pressure and assertiveness also increased the perceived risk of using tobacco and alcohol. CONCLUSIONS: The intervention has the potential to increase the perception of risk toward drug use in high school students by providing knowledge about the effects and psychosocial risks of drug use and by strengthening life skills that are associated with increased risk perception. The use of mobile technologies in intervention processes may broaden the scope of preventive work for adolescents.

By employing a mechanically controllable break junction technique, we have realized an ideal single molecular linear actuator based on dithienylethene (DTE) based molecular architecture, which undergoes reversible photothermal isomerization when subjected to UV irradiation under ambient conditions. As a result, open form (compressed, UV OFF) and closed form (elongated, UV ON) of dithienylethene-based molecular junctions are achieved. Interestingly, the mechanical actuation is achieved without changing the conductance of the molecular junction around the Fermi level over several cycles, which is an essential property required for an ideal single molecular actuator. Our study demonstrates a unique example of achieving a perfect balance between tunneling width and barrier height change upon photothermal isomerization, resulting in no change in conductance but a change in the molecular length, which results in mechanical actuation at the single molecular level.

OBJECTIVE: Type 2 endoleaks (T2E) continue to be the "Achilles Heel" of endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). The aim of this study is to analyze preoperative factors of patients who underwent EVAR to define risk factors for T2E. METHODS: From January 2015 to June 2020, 140 of 191 patients who underwent EVAR in our institution meet inclusion criteria for this study. Postoperative image control were performed using duplex ultrasound or CT scan. All T2E detected during follow-up were confirmed by angio CT. Preoperative anatomic and clinical variables were analyzed for T2E using t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher exact test. ROC curves and the corresponding area under the curve (AUC) were used to describe the predictive accuracy for endoleak. RESULTS: T2E was detected in 16 patients (11.43%)0.12 of them (75%) were persistent and 10 (62.5%) provoked sac enlargement. Predictive factors for T2E were a greater IMA diameter (2.5 ± 0.5 vs. 3.3 ± 0.5, p < 0.001) and an increasing number of LA (4.8 ± 1.6 vs. 6.7 ± 1.4, p < 0.001). ROC curve analysis stablished thresholds of 3.5 mm for IMA diameter (sensitivity 77%, specificity 86%) and 5.5 for patent LA (sensitivity 88%, specificity 59%) as risk factor to develop T2E. CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative aortic side branches embolization to avoid T2E is not still standarised. We tried to define a group of high-risk patients for T2E. According to our findings, patients with a preoperative IMA> 3 mm and more than 5 patent LA should be considered for pre-EVAR embolization.

Gap junctions between neurons of the brain are thought to be present in only certain cell types, and they mostly connect dendrites, somata, and axons. Synapses with gap junctions serve bidirectional metabolic and electrical coupling between connected neuronal compartments. Although plasticity of electrical synapses has been described, recent evidence of the presence of silent, but activatable, gap junctions suggests that electrical nodes in a neuronal circuit can be added or suppressed by changes in the synaptic microenvironment. This opens the possibility of reconfiguration of neuronal ensembles in response to activity. Moreover, the coexistence of gap junctions in a glutamatergic synapse may add electric and metabolic coupling to a neuronal aggregate and may serve to constitute primed ensembles within a higher-order neural network. The interaction of chemical with electrical synapses should be further explored to find, especially, emerging properties of neuronal ensembles. It will be worth to reexamine in a new light the "functional" implications of the "anatomic" concepts: "continuity" and "contiguity," which were championed by Golgi and Ramón y Cajal, respectively. In any case, exploring the versatility of the gap junctions will likely enrich the heuristic aspects of the neural and network postulates.

Bovine arch is an aortic arch variant in which the left common carotid artery and the brachiocephalic trunk share the same origin. Several vascular pathologies, as aneurysm, dissection or strokes have an increased prevalence in patients with this anatomic variant. We describe the first reported case of a young patient with a symptomatic aortic arch floating thrombus in association with a bovine arch.

RESUMO

Uremic pruritus (UP) is one of the most uncomfortable symptoms for patients in dialysis. UP has a great impact on dialysis patients' quality of life and has a great prevalence between those (28-70%). Physiopathology of UP is unknown and usually is unnoticed for most nephrologists (in more than 65% of centers is underdiagnosed). This lack of awareness drives to the unsuccessful treatment of this symptom. Moreover, the fact that most studies have been carried out on small populations and the difficulty assessing UP complicates a correct therapeutical approach. For this reason, we have designed treatment algorithms based on the efficacy of the drugs but also its safeness to avoid adverse effects.

Two-dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks (2D COFs) have attracted considerable interest because of their potential for a broad range of applications. Different combinations of the monomeric units can lead to potentially novel materials with varying physico-chemical properties. In this study, we investigate the electronic properties of various 2D COFs with square lattice topology based on a tight-binding density functional theory approach. We first classify the 2D COFs into different classes according to the degree of π-conjugation. Interestingly, this classification is recovered by using a similarity measure based on specific features of the electronic band-structure of the COFs. Further, we study the effect of aromaticity on the electronic structure of fully-conjugated COFs. Our results show that the conjugation and aromaticity are keys in the electronic band-structure of COFs.
