PURPOSE: Genetic cancer risk assessment (GCRA) provides pathogenic variant (PV) carriers with the invaluable opportunity to undertake timely cancer risk-reducing (RR) measures and initiate cascade testing (CT). This study describes the uptake of these strategies and the related barriers among breast cancer-associated germline PV carriers in Mexico. METHODS: Carriers who were at least 6 months after disclosure of genetic test results at two GCRA referral centers were invited to answer a survey assessing sociodemographic characteristics, awareness of their carrier status and its implications, uptake of RR measures according to international guidelines by PV, CT initiation, and associated challenges. RESULTS: Of the eligible carriers, 246/384 (64%) answered the survey (median age: 44 years). Most were female (88%), married/in domestic partnership (66%), and had personal breast/ovarian cancer history (61%). PVs included BRCA1/2 (75%), CHEK2 (10%), PALB2 (5%), ATM (5%), NF1 (2%), RAD51C (2%), PTEN (1%), and TP53 (1%). Most (87%) participants were aware of their carrier status. When recommended, 37% underwent RR bilateral mastectomy, 48% RR oophorectomy, 70% annual mammogram, and 20% breast magnetic resonance imaging. Challenges hindering the uptake of RR measures included financial limitations (67%), lack of recommendation by their physician (35%), and fear (24%). Nearly all (98%) claimed sharing their results with their relatives. CT was initiated in 63% of families and was associated with carriers being married/in domestic partnership (P = .04) and believing GCRA was useful (P < .001). CONCLUSION: Despite the resource-constrained setting, relevant rates of RR measures and CT were observed. Targeted interventions to reduce out-of-pocket expenses and improve patient-physician communication and patients' understanding on carrier status are warranted to enhance the overall benefit of GCRA and ultimately improve the provision of patient-centered care to both carriers and their at-risk relatives.

Methicillin-resistant (MR) Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and others, except for Staphylococcus aureus (SOSA), are common in healthcare-associated infections. SOSA encompass largely coagulase-negative staphylococci, including coagulase-positive staphylococcal species. Biofilm formation is encoded by the icaADBC operon and is involved in virulence. mecA encodes an additional penicillin-binding protein (PBP), PBP2a, that avoids the arrival of ß-lactams at the target, found in the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec). This work aims to detect mecA, the bap gene, the icaADBC operon, and types of SCCmec associated to biofilm in MRSA and SOSA strains. A total of 46% (37/80) of the strains were S. aureus, 44% (35/80) S. epidermidis, 5% (4/80) S. haemolyticus, 2.5% (2/80) S. hominis, 1.25% (1/80) S. intermedius, and 1.25% (1/80) S. saprophyticus. A total of 85% were MR, of which 95.5% showed mecA and 86.7% ß-lactamase producers; thus, Staphylococcus may have more than one resistance mechanism. Healthcare-associated infection strains codified type I-III genes of SCCmec; types IV and V were associated to community-acquired strains (CA). Type II prevailed in MRSA mecA strains and type II and III in MRSOSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococci other than Staphylococcus aureus). The operon icaADBC was found in 24% of SA and 14% of SOSA; probably the arrangement of the operon, fork formation, and mutations influenced the variation. Methicillin resistance was mainly mediated by the mecA gene; however, there may be other mechanisms that also participate, since biofilm production is related to genes of the icaADBC operon and methicillin resistance was not associated with biofilm production. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen surveillance to prevent the spread of these outbreaks both in the nosocomial environment and in the community.

BACKGROUND: The use of taxanes following the first trimester of pregnancy is endorsed by current clinical guidelines. However, evidence regarding their safety in terms of obstetric and neonatal outcomes is limited. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed using the MEDLINE, CENTRAL and Web of Sciences databases from their inception up to 12/16/2022. Eligibility criteria included gestational taxane use, presentation of original findings, and individual case data presented. A descriptive statistical analysis was undertaken. RESULTS: A total of 159 patients treated with taxane-containing regimens during pregnancy were identified, resulting in 162 fetuses exposed in utero. The majority of patients had breast cancer (n = 88; 55.3%) or cervical cancer (n = 45; 28.3%). The most commonly employed taxane was paclitaxel (n = 131; 82.4%). A total of 111 (69.8%) patients were also treated with other cytotoxic drugs during pregnancy, including platinum salts (n = 70; 63.0%) and doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide (n = 20; 18.0%). While most patients received taxanes during the second trimester of pregnancy (n = 79; 70.0%), two were exposed to taxanes in the first trimester. Obstetric outcomes were reported in 105 (66.0%) cases, with the most frequent adverse events being preterm contractions or premature rupture of membranes (n = 12; 11.4%), pre-eclampsia/HELLP syndrome (n = 6; 5.7%), and oligohydramnios/anhydramnios (n = 6; 5.7%). All cases with pregnancy outcome available resulted in live births (n = 132). Overall, 72 (54.5%) neonates were delivered preterm, 40 (30.3%) were classified as small for gestational age (SGA), and 2 (1.5%) had an Apgar score of < 7 at 5 min. Perinatal complications included acute respiratory distress syndrome (n = 14; 10.6%), hyperbilirubinemia (n = 5; 3.8%), and hypoglycemia (n = 2; 1.5%). In addition, 7 (5.3%) cases of congenital malformations were reported. At a median follow-up of 16 months, offspring health status was available for 86 (65.2%), of which 13 (15.1%) had a documented complication, including delayed speech development, recurrent otitis media, and acute myeloid leukemia. CONCLUSIONS: Taxanes appear to be safe following the first trimester of pregnancy, with obstetric and fetal outcomes being similar to those observed in the general obstetric population. Future studies should aim to determine the most effective taxane regimen and dosage for use during gestation, with a specific focus on treatment safety.

RESUMO

Early and accurate diagnoses of pathogenic microorganisms is essential to correctly identify diseases, treating infections, and tracking disease outbreaks associated with microbial infections, to develop precautionary measures that allow a fast and effective response in epidemics and pandemics, thus improving public health. Aptamers are a class of synthetic nucleic acid molecules with the potential to be used for medical purposes, since they can be directed towards any target molecule. Currently, the use of aptamers has increased because they are a useful tool in the detection of specific targets. We present a brief review of the use of aptamers to detect and identify bacteria or even some toxins with clinical importance. This work describes the advances in the technology of aptamers, with the purpose of providing knowledge to develop new aptamers for diagnoses and treatment of different diseases caused by infectious microorganisms.

Measuring lycopene in tomatoes is fundamental to the agrifood industry because of its health benefits. It is one of the leading quality criteria for consuming this fruit. Traditionally, the amount determination of this carotenoid is performed using the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. This is a very reliable and accurate method, but it has several disadvantages, such as long analysis time, high cost, and destruction of the sample. In this sense, this work proposes a low-cost sensor that correlates the lycopene content in tomato with the color present in its epicarp. A Raspberry Pi 4 programmed with Python language was used to develop the lycopene prediction model. Various regression models were evaluated using neural networks, fuzzy logic, and linear regression. The best model was the fuzzy nonlinear regression as the RGB input, with a correlation of R2 = 0.99 and a mean error of 1.9 × 10-5. This work was able to demonstrate that it is possible to determine the lycopene content using a digital camera and a low-cost integrated system in a non-invasive way.

Through screening of rhizobacteria, species that effectively suppress phytopathogens and/or promote plant growth are found. Genome sequencing is a crucial step in obtaining a complete characterization of microorganisms for biotechnological applications. This study aimed to sequence the genomes of four rhizobacteria that differ in their inhibition of four root pathogens and in their interaction with chili pepper roots to identify the species and analyze differences in the biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) for antibiotic metabolites and to determine possible phenotype-genotype correlations. Results from sequencing and genome alignment identified two bacteria as Paenibacillus polymyxa, one as Kocuria polaris, and one that was previously sequenced as Bacillus velezensis. Analysis with antiSMASH and PRISM tools showed that B. velezensis 2A-2B, the strain with the best performance of referred characteristics, had 13 BGCs, including those related to surfactin, fengycin, and macrolactin, not shared with the other bacteria, whereas P. polymyxa 2A-2A and 3A-25AI, with up to 31 BGCs, showed lower pathogen inhibition and plant hostility; K. polaris showed the least antifungal capacity. P. polymyxa and B. velezensis had the highest number of BGCs for nonribosomal peptides and polyketides. In conclusion, the 13 BGCs in the genome of B. velezensis 2A-2B that were not present in the other bacteria could explain its effective antifungal capacity and could also contribute to its friendly interaction with chili pepper roots. The high number of other BGCs for nonribosomal peptides and polyketide shared by the four bacteria contributed much less to phenotypic differences. IMPORTANCE To advance the characterization of a microorganism as a biocontrol agent against phytopathogens, it is highly recommended to analyze the potential of the profile of secondary metabolites as antibiotics that it produces to counteract pathogens. Some specific metabolites have positive impacts in plants. By analyzing sequenced genomes with bioinformatic tools, such as antiSMASH and PRISM, outstanding bacterial strains with high potential to inhibit phytopathogens and/or promote plant growth can be quickly selected to confirm and expand our knowledge of BGCs of great value in phytopathology.

Global dispersion, hospital outbreaks, and lineage relationships between emerging antibiotic-resistant strains such as Klebsiella pneumoniae are of public health interest. This study aimed to isolate and identify K. pneumoniae clones from third-level healthcare hospitals in Mexico to establish their multidrug-resistant phenotype, phylogeny, and prevalence. Biological and abiotic surface samples were used to isolate K. pneumoniae strains and to test their antibiotic susceptibility to classify them. The housekeeping genes: gapA, InfB, mdh, pgi, phoE, ropB, and tonB were used for multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Phylogenetic networks were constructed with 48 strains. Isolated strains (93) were mainly from urine and blood, 96% were resistant to ampicillin as expected, 60% were extended-spectrum ß-lactamases (ESBL), 98% were susceptible to ertapenem and meropenem and 99% were susceptible to imipenem, 46% were multi-drug resistant (MDR), 17% were extensively-drug resistant (XDR), 1% were pan-drug resistant (PDR), and 36% were not classified. The tonB, mdh, and phoE genes were the most variable, and the InfB gene showed positive selection. The most prevalent sequence types (STs) were ST551 (six clones), ST405 (six clones), ST1088 (four clones), ST25 (four clones), ST392 (three clones), and ST36 (two clones). ST706 was PDR, and ST1088 clones were MDR; neither of these STs has been reported in Mexico. The strains analyzed were from different hospitals and locations; thus, it is important to maintain antibiotic surveillance and avoid clone dissemination to prevent outbreaks, adaptation to antibiotics, and the transmission of antibiotic resistance.

Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) is a protein produced by Staphylococcus aureus, which is toxic to humans. It is well known for its ability to stimulate the exacerbated activation of proinflammatory CD4+ T cells (Th1 profile), and in vitro studies have been conducted to understand its mechanism of action and its potential use as an immune therapy. However, the efficiency of the SEB1741 aptamer in blocking SEB has not been experimentally demonstrated. METHODS: Enrichment CD4+ T cells were stimulated with SEB, and as a blocker, we used the SEB1741 aptamer, which was previously synthesised by an "in silico" analysis, showing high affinity and specificity to SEB. The efficiency of the SEB1741 aptamer in blocking CD4+ T cell activation was compared with that of an anti-SEB monoclonal antibody. Flow cytometry and Bio-Plex were used to evaluate the T-cell function. RESULTS: In vitro, SEB induced the activation of CD4+ T cells and favoured a Th1 profile; however, the SEB1741 aptamer was highly efficient in decreasing the frequency of CD4+ T cells positive to ki-67 and CD69 cells, this means that proliferation and activation of CD4+ T cells was decreased. Moreover, the production of interleukin 2 (IL-2) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) was affected, suggesting that the Th1 profile is not present when the SEB1441 aptamer is used. Thus, the SEB1741 function was similar to that of anti-SEB. CONCLUSIONS: The SEB1741 aptamer is a valuable tool for blocking CD4+ T cell activation and the subsequent release of proinflammatory cytokines by SEB stimulation.

Introducción: La prejubilación se define como una etapa de la vida donde convergen factores biológicos, psicológicos, sociales, culturales, espirituales y ambientales que preparan al individuo para un cambio global y profundo. Objetivo: Precisar mediante el tratamiento psicológico inclusivo los cambios ocurridos en el proceso cognoscitivo del pensamiento y las modificaciones obtenidas en la esfera emocional en el grupo intervenido. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio cuasi-experimental en el Policlínico Docente «Marta Abreu», de Santa Clara, Villa Clara, en el período de enero de 2017 a febrero de 2019. Se emplearon procedimientos, métodos y técnicas con la aplicación de esta modalidad terapéutica en un grupo estudio de 200 personas prejubilables, de 55 a 65 años de edad. Se utilizaron métodos teóricos, empíricos y estadísticos-matemáticos. Se aplicaron técnicas psicológicas antes del tratamiento psicológico inclusivo, y después de este, en el grupo estudio y en el grupo control. Resultados: Fueron muy reveladores en el grupo estudio, y se registraron cambios muy significativos en los procesos intelectuales, en el pensamiento lógico verbal, práctico constructivo y rumiativo; además estados emocionales ansioso bajo y depresivo leve, autoestima alta, y notable mejoría en la vulnerabilidad al estrés. En el grupo control no se reflejaron cambios favorables. Conclusiones: El tratamiento psicológico inclusivo resultó efectivo por el logro de cambios positivos en el estado cognitivo-emocional-conductual en personas prejubilables del grupo estudio. La aplicación de las estrategias de desactivación fisiológica, cognitivas, reflexivo vivenciales, informativas, así como las habilidades de conductas de afrontamiento, las acciones de mantenimiento y generalización y las ayudas paliativas y moderadoras de estrés en la atención a personas prejubilables, constituyó un novedoso recurso terapéutico.


Introduction: pre-retirement is defined as a stage of life where biological, psychological, social, cultural, spiritual and environmental factors converge to prepare the individual for a global and profound change. Objective: to determine, through the inclusive psychological treatment, the changes occurred in the cognitive process of thinking and the modifications obtained in the emotional sphere in the intervened group. Methods: a quasi-experimental study was carried out at "Marta Abreu" Teaching Polyclinic in Santa Clara, Villa Clara from January 2017 to February 2019. Procedures, methods and techniques were used with the application of this therapeutic modality in a study group of 200 pre-retired people aged 55 to 65 years old. Theoretical, empirical, statistical and mathematical methods were used. Psychological techniques were applied before and after the inclusive psychological treatment in the study and control groups. Results: they very revealing in the study group, and very significant changes were registered in intellectual processes as well as in verbal-logical, practical-constructive and ruminative thinking; also low anxious and mild depressive emotional states, high self-esteem, and notable improvement in vulnerability to stress. No favorable changes were reflected in the control group. Conclusions: the inclusive psychological treatment was effective in achieving positive changes in the cognitive, emotional and behavioural state in pre-retired people from the study group. The application of physiological deactivation, cognitive, experiential, reflective, and informative strategies, as well as coping behavioural skills, maintenance and generalization actions and palliative and moderating stress aids in the care of pre-retired people constituted a novel therapeutic resource.

Introducción: las reacciones hemolíticas tardías transfusionales ocurren después de 24 horas de practicadas, algunas durante las dos semanas siguientes a la transfusión o hasta en un período de 30 días. Las reacciones transfusionales inmunológicas pueden ser febriles, anafilácticas y hemolíticas. En este último nivel se presentan como reacción a antígenos de eritrocitos extraños en pacientes que fueron expuestos previamente a transfusiones y embarazo. Reporte de caso: a continuación revisaremos el caso de una paciente en el Hospital de San José de Bogotá quien presentó una reacción hemolítica tardía y se documentó la expresión de antígenos Duffy y antígenos E, secundarios a inmunización por trasfusiones anteriores.


Introducction: delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions (DHTR) happen 24 hours, two weeks or up to 30 days post transfusion. Immunologic transfusion reactions may be febrile, anaphylactic and hemolytic. Hemolysis occurs as a response to foreign red-blood cells antigens, in patients, previously exposed to transfusions and pregnancy. Case presentation: herein we review the case of a patient, admitted to Hospital de San José in Bogotá, who presented with a delayed hemolytic reaction, in whom the expression of Duffy and E antigens was documented, secondary to immunization related to previous blood transfusions.

The clinical presentation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), ranges between mild respiratory symptoms and a severe disease that shares many of the features of sepsis. Sepsis is a deregulated response to infection that causes life-threatening organ failure. During sepsis, the intestinal epithelial cells are affected, causing an increase in intestinal permeability and allowing microbial translocation from the intestine to the circulation, which exacerbates the inflammatory response. Here we studied patients with moderate, severe and critical COVID-19 by measuring a panel of molecules representative of the innate and adaptive immune responses to SARS-CoV-2, which also reflect the presence of systemic inflammation and the state of the intestinal barrier. We found that non-surviving COVID-19 patients had higher levels of low-affinity anti-RBD IgA antibodies than surviving patients, which may be a response to increased microbial translocation. We identified sFas and granulysin, in addition to IL-6 and IL-10, as possible early biomarkers with high sensitivity (>73 %) and specificity (>51 %) to discriminate between surviving and non-surviving COVID-19 patients. Finally, we found that the microbial metabolite d-lactate and the tight junction regulator zonulin were increased in the serum of patients with severe COVID-19 and in COVID-19 patients with secondary infections, suggesting that increased intestinal permeability may be a source of secondary infections in these patients. COVID-19 patients with secondary infections had higher disease severity and mortality than patients without these infections, indicating that intestinal permeability markers could provide complementary information to the serum cytokines for the early identification of COVID-19 patients with a high risk of a fatal outcome.

A comparative single-evaluation cross-sectional study was performed to evaluate cognitive damage in post-COVID-19 patients. The psychophysics tests of Two-Alternative Forced Choice (2AFC) and Simple Reaction Time (SRT), under a designed virtual environment, were used to evaluate the cognitive processes of decision-making, visual attention, and information processing speed. The population under study consisted of 147 individuals, 38 controls, and 109 post-COVID patients. During the 2AFC test, an Emotiv EPOC+® headset was used to obtain EEG signals to evaluate their Focus, Interest, and Engagement metrics. Results indicate that compared to healthy patients or recovered patients from mild-moderate COVID-19 infection, patients who recovered from a severe-critical COVID infection showed a poor performance in different cognitive tests: decision-making tasks required higher visual sensitivity (p = 0.002), Focus (p = 0.01) and information processing speed (p < 0.001). These results signal that the damage caused by the coronavirus on the central nervous and visual systems significantly reduces the cognitive processes capabilities, resulting in a prevalent deficit of 42.42% in information processing speed for mild-moderate cases, 46.15% for decision-making based on visual sensitivity, and 62.16% in information processing speed for severe-critical cases. A psychological follow-up for patients recovering from COVID-19 is recommended based on our findings.

OBJETIVO: Proporcionar recomendaciones para la detección temprana de pacientes con alto riesgo de desarrollar cáncer de pulmón (CP) en el primer nivel de atención y su referencia oportuna. Material y métodos. Se realizó una búsqueda detallada de la evidencia científica disponible para responder las preguntas de investigación clínica y se utilizó el Panel Delphi modificado para lograr un consenso entre expertos. RESULTADOS: Se generaron 14 recomendaciones siguiendo los estándares de una GPC. Conclusión. El CP representa un problema de salud pública en México; por ello, esta guía establece recomendaciones que apoyan la toma de decisiones sobre la detección precoz y la referencia de pacientes con sospecha de CP en el primer nivel de atención.

RESUMEN El ejercicio de la Enfermería tiene un alto componente de responsabilidad y comportamiento ético para el control emocional de las personas con antecedentes de infarto agudo de miocardio. Este sustento le da significado a la práctica de la Enfermería para ser aplicada de forma sistemática y organizada. Se realizó una investigación descriptiva con el objetivo de proponer acciones, desde la Enfermería, que contribuyan al mejoramiento del control emocional en las personas con antecedentes de infarto agudo de miocardio pertenecientes al Policlínico Docente Universitario «Martha Abreu de Estévez¼, de Santa Clara, Villa Clara, en el período de enero de 2017 a febrero de 2019. En las personas estudiadas se constató un predominio de: autoestima baja, alta vulnerabilidad al estrés y la ansiedad. ABSTRACT Nursing practice has a high component of responsibility and ethical behavior for the emotional control of people with a history of acute myocardial infarction. This support gives meaning to the practice of Nursing to be applied in a systematic and organized way. A descriptive research was carried out with the objective of proposing actions, from the point of view of Nursing, that contribute to the improvement of emotional control in people with a history of acute myocardial infarction belonging to "Martha Abreu de Estévez" University Teaching Polyclinic, in Santa Clara, Villa Clara, from January 2017 to February 2019. A predominance of low self-esteem, high vulnerability to stress and anxiety was found in the people studied. On the other hand, difficulties in understanding their emotional states, inability to clarify and repair their emotions, as well as unsatisfactory life satisfaction were evidenced.

The inclusion of the Internet of Things (IoT) in greenhouses has become a fundamental tool for improving cultivation systems, offering information relevant to the greenhouse manager for decision making in search of optimum yield. This article presents a monitoring system applied to an aeroponic greenhouse based on an IoT architecture that provides user information on the status of the climatic variables and the appearance of the crop in addition to managing the irrigation timing and the frequency of visual inspection using an application developed for Android mobile devices called Aeroponics Monitor. The proposed IoT architecture consists of four layers: a device layer, fog layer, cloud layer and application layer. Once the information about the monitored variables is obtained by the sensors of the device layer, the fog layer processes it and transfers it to the Thingspeak and Firebase servers. In the cloud layer, Thingspeak analyzes the information from the variables monitored in the greenhouse through its IoT analytic tools to generate historical data and visualizations of their behavior, as well as an analysis of the system's operating status. Firebase, on the other hand, is used as a database to store the results of the processing of the images taken in the fog layer for the supervision of the leaves and roots. The results of the analysis of the information of the monitored variables and of the processing of the images are presented in the developed app, with the objective of visualizing the state of the crop and to know the function of the monitoring system in the event of a possible lack of electricity or a service line failure in the fog layer and to avoid the loss of information. With the information about the temperature of the plant leaf and the relative humidity inside the greenhouse, the vapor pressure deficit (VPD) in the cloud layer is calculated; the VPD values are available on the Thingspeak server and in the developed app. Additionally, an analysis of the VPD is presented that demonstrates a water deficiency from the transplanting of the seedling to the cultivation chamber. The IoT architecture presented in this paper represents a potential tool for the study of aeroponic farming systems through IoT-assisted monitoring.

Liposomes are artificial models of cellular membranes that are used as delivery systems for genes, drugs and protein antigens. We have previously used them to study the antigenic properties of their phospholipids. Here, we used them to induce the production of IgG anti-non-bilayer phospholipid arrangements (NPAs) antibodies in mice; these antibodies cause cell lysis and trigger a lupus-like disease in mice. We studied the mechanisms that lead to the production of these antibodies, and provide evidence that NK1.1+, CD4+ T cells respond to NPA-bearing liposomes and deliver the help required for specific B cell activation and antibody class-switching to IgG. We found increased numbers of IL-4-producing NK1.1+, CD4+ T cells in the secondary lymphoid organs of mice administered with NPAs, and these cells also expressed CD40L, which is required for B cell activation. Additionally, we isolated and purified NK1.1+, CD4+ T cells from spleens and determined that they over-expressed 40 genes, which are key players in inflammatory processes and B cell stimulation and have TRAF6 and UNC39B1 as key nodes in their network. These results show that liposomes are membrane models that can be used to analyze the immunogenicity of lipids.

Most individuals infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) have latent tuberculosis (TB), which can be diagnosed with tests (such as the QuantiFERON-TB Gold test [QFT]) that detect the production of IFN-γ by memory T cells in response to the Mtb-specific antigens 6 kDa early secretory antigenic target EsxA (Rv3875) (ESAT-6), 10 kDa culture filtrate antigen EsxB (Rv3874) (CFP-10), and Mtb antigen of 7.7 kDa (Rv2654c) (TB7.7). However, the immunological mechanisms that determine if an individual will develop latent or active TB remain incompletely understood. Here we compared the response of innate and adaptive peripheral blood lymphocytes from healthy individuals without Mtb infection (QFT negative) and from individuals with latent (QFT positive) or active TB infection, to determine the characteristics of these cells that correlate with each condition. In active TB patients, the levels of IFN-γ that were produced in response to Mtb-specific antigens had high positive correlations with IL-1ß, TNF-α, MCP-1, IL-6, IL-12p70, and IL-23, while the proinflammatory cytokines had high positive correlations between themselves and with IL-12p70 and IL-23. These correlations were not observed in QFT-negative or QFT-positive healthy volunteers. Activation with Mtb-soluble extract (a mixture of Mtb antigens and pathogen-associated molecular patterns [PAMPs]) increased the percentage of IFN-γ-/IL-17-producing NK cells and of IL-17-producing innate lymphoid cell 3 (ILC3) in the peripheral blood of active TB patients, but not of QFT-negative or QFT-positive healthy volunteers. Thus, active TB patients have both adaptive and innate lymphocyte subsets that produce characteristic cytokine profiles in response to Mtb-specific antigens or PAMPs. These profiles are not observed in uninfected individuals or in individuals with latent TB, suggesting that they are a response to active TB infection.

(1) Background: As breast cancer studies suggest, a high percentage of breast density (PBD) may be related to breast cancer incidence. Although PBD screening is one of the strongest predictors of breast cancer risk, X-ray-based mammography evaluation is subjective. Therefore, new objective PBD measuring techniques are of interest. A case study analyzing the PBD of thirteen female participants using a bioimpedance-based method, the anomalies tracking circle (ATC), is described in this paper. (2) Methods: In the first stage, the breast bioimpedance of each participant was measured. Then, the participant breast density was determined by applying a mammogram just after the breast bioimpedance measurement stage. In the third stage, the ATC algorithm was applied to the measured bioimpedance data for each participant, and a results analysis was done. (3) Results: An ATC variation according to the breast density was observed from the obtained data, this allowed the use of classification techniques to determine the PBD. (4) Conclusions: The described breast density method is a promising approach that might be applied as an auxiliary tool to the mammography in order to obtain precise and objective results for evaluation of breast density and with that determine potential breast cancer risk.
