RESUMO

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) consisting of p-GaN epitaxial films and n-ZnO nanorods have been fabricated and characterized. The rectifying behavior and emission spectra were strongly dependent on the electronic properties of both GaN film and ZnO nanorods. Light emission under both forward and reverse bias was obtained in all cases, and emission spectra could be changed by annealing the ZnO nanorods. The emission spectra could be further tuned by using a GaN LED epiwafer as a substrate. Both forward and backward diode behavior has been observed and the emission spectra were significantly affected by both the properties of the GaN substrate and the annealing conditions for the ZnO nanorods.

RESUMO

Nanoribbons and nanowires of different metal phthalocyanines (copper, nickel, iron, cobalt, and zinc), as well as copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (F(16)CuPc), have been grown by organic vapor-phase deposition. Their properties, as a function of substrate type, source-to-substrate distance, and substrate temperature, were studied by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and absorption measurements. The size and morphology of the nanostructures were found to be mainly determined by the substrate temperature. The crystal structure was dependent on the substrate temperature as well. At substrate temperatures below 200 degrees C, in addition to straight nanoribbons, twisted nanoribbons were found for all investigated materials except F(16)CuPc, which formed helical nanoribbons upon exposure to an electron beam. The formation of different nanostructures (nanoribbons, twisted nanoribbons, and helical nanoribbons) is discussed.

RESUMO

We report on the micromachining of silicon microlens structures by use of scanning-probe gray-scale anodic oxidation along with dry anisotropic etching. Convex, concave, and arbitrarily shaped silicon microlenses with diameters as small as 2 microm are demonstrated. We also confirm the high fidelity of pattern transfer between the probe-induced oxides and the etched silicon microlens structures. Besides the flexibility, the important features of scanning-probe gray-scale anodic oxidation are small pixel size and pitch (of the order of tens of nanometers), an unlimited number of gray-scale levels, and the possibility of creating arbitrarily designed microlens structures with exquisite precision and resolution. With this approach, refractive, diffractive, and hybrid microlens arrays can be developed to create innovative optical components.

RESUMO

A comprehensive atomic model for the reconstructed surface of Si3N4 thin layer grown on Si(111) is presented. Kikuchi electron holography images clearly show the existence of adatoms on the Si3N4(0001)/Si(111)-(8x8) surface. Compared with the ab initio calculations, more than 30 symmetry-inequivalent atomic pairs in the outmost layers are successfully identified. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images show diamond-shaped unit cells and nine adatoms in each cell. High-resolution STM images reveal extra features and are in good agreement with the partial charge density distribution obtained from total-energy calculations.

Positive and negative symptom (NGS) dimensions were examined for their concordance in 46 coaffected schizophrenic sib-pairs. Results showed that the symptom dimensions of negative symptoms (NGS), delusion-hallucination (DHS), and thought disorganization (TDS) could be formulated. Discrete genetic endowment of these three symptom dimensions was not found as shown by the low concordance in sib pair analysis (kappa = 0.20-0.30). Thirty-seven pairs (80.4%) and 21 pairs (45.7%) had liability, defined by the presence of NGS in any one member of the coaffected sib-pairs, of NGS of "any degree", and of "severe degree" in 46 sib-pairs, respectively. Both groups had high prevalence (59.1-81.0%) of positive symptoms. Another 9 (19.6%) and 25 (54.3%) pairs had no liability of NGS of "any degree" or of "severe degree" out of 46 sib-pairs, respectively. These two groups had high concordance (kappa = 0.45-1.00) of TDS or DHS between coaffected sib-pairs. Based on the results, it is hypothesized that schizophrenia, as defined by DSM-III-R, may consist of two subtypes: one has liability of NGS and a high prevalence of positive symptoms, while the other has only positive symptoms.
