RESUMO

Acidic organophosphorous extractants were screened for the mutual separation of Mn(II) and Zn(II), in a leach solution of waste Zn-C cell powder. This was done using a 2mol/L H2SO4 solution containing 2g/L glucose. Extraction characteristics of both metal ions in this mixture have been examined as functions of equilibrium pH. Although tech. and anal. grade D2EHPA are not so effective for the separation, PC88A, Cyanex 272, Cyanex 302 and Cyanex 301 are all promising for this purpose. Strippings of Mn(II) and Zn(II) from the extracted organic phases have been examined, using 0.25, 0.50 and 1mol/L H2SO4; and 1mol/L HCl, HNO3 and HClO4 at different phase ratios. H2SO4 appears to be the best stripping agent. A 1mol/L H2SO4 solution strips almost 100% of target metal ions in 10min, regardless of the extractant used. As ΔpH1/2=2.75 and as the max. separation factor (ß)=1793 for Cyanex 302 at pH(eq)=4.0, a flow sheet has been developed for their mutual separations. Finally, classical precipitation methods have been adopted to obtain MnS and ZnS, which can be easily oxidized to MnO2 and ZnO, respectively.

RESUMO

The SLC29A3 gene, encoding hENT3, a member of the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family, has recently been found mutated in Faisalabad histiocytosis, pigmented hypertrichotic dermatosis with insulin-dependent diabetes, familial sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML), and H syndromes. We here report clinical and genetic findings of an Egyptian family with H syndrome. We describe two siblings, a 19-yr old girl and a 15-yr old boy, of consanguineous parents. From 5 yr of age, the girl developed bilateral flexion deformity of interphalengeal joints and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. At age 7 yr, prominent hyperpigmented patches appeared on the skin at lower limbs, genitalia, and trunk. On clinical examination, she had hepatosplenomegaly, generalized lymphadenopathy, left ventricular hypertrophy, sensorineural hearing loss, hypogonadism, short stature, and characteristic dysmorphic features. Her brother had fixed flexion contractures of the feet, profound sensorineural hearing loss, characteristic dysmorphic features, but no diabetes. DNA sequence analysis revealed a homozygous mutation (c.300+1G>C) in SLC29A3 in both siblings. The phenotype and genotype of the siblings were compatible with that of the H syndrome, although the features were overlapping with those found in pigmented hypertrichotic dermatosis with insulin-dependent diabetes, familial SHML, and Faisalabad histiocytosis, indicating that these four syndromes may be regarded as one disease with varying phenotypic features. A new, common name for these conditions is warranted.

RESUMO

To evaluate risk factors for infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus (H5N1) in backyard chickens in Bangladesh, we conducted a matched case-control study. We enrolled 25 case farms (cases March-November 2007) and 75 control farms (June-November 2007). We used a questionnaire to collect farm data, which were analyzed by matched-pair analysis and multivariate conditional logistic regression. Factors independently associated were offering slaughter remnants of purchased chickens to backyard chickens (odds ratio [OR] 13.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.34-131.98, p = 0.027), having a nearby water body (OR 5.27, 95% CI 1.24-22.34, p = 0.024), and having contact with pigeons (OR 4.47, 95% CI 1.14-17.50, p = 0.032). Separating chickens and ducks at night was protective (OR 0.06, 95% CI 0.01-0.45, p = 0.006). Reducing these risks and taking protective measures might reduce the risk for influenza (H5N1) infection in backyard chickens.

RESUMO

To determine the epidemiology of outbreaks of avian influenza A virus (subtypes H5N1, H9N2) in chickens in Bangladesh, we conducted surveys and examined virus isolates. The outbreak began in backyard chickens. Probable sources of infection included egg trays and vehicles from local live bird markets and larger live bird markets.
