Coal ash is a waste product generated when coal is burned for energy. The purpose of this study was to assess health symptoms in adults living near a coal-burning power plant and compare the symptoms to a non-exposed population. A community-based mixed methods study was conducted with four neighborhoods adjacent to a coal-burning power plant. The comparison population was not exposed to coal ash and did not live near a coal-burning power plant. Adults who lived near the coal-burning power plant were significantly more likely to suffer from respiratory (AOR = 5.27, 95% CI = 2.16-12.0), gingiva (AOR = 2.46, 95% CI = 1.46-4.15), and skin symptoms (AOR = 3.37, 95% CI = 2.09-5.43). Results suggest that health symptoms may develop in people living near coal-burning power plants.

A 44-year-old man suffering from cytogenetically and molecularly proven Philadelphia translocation-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia in chronic phase was treated with busulfan for 18 months and studied during a follow-up period of 13 years. Hematologically and cytogenetically, he attained a continuing complete remission, although at one point (9.5 years) at least, after attaining complete remission molecular analysis indicated the presence of minimal residual disease.

Two cases are reported of patients who developed a hematologic malignancy several years after intravesical chemotherapy of superficial bladder cancer with etoglucid, doxorubicin, and mitomycin C. In one patient, karyotypic abnormalities (-5, 7q-) typical of a therapy induced malignancy were associated with rapid progression of a refractory anemia with excess blasts in transformation to an acute non-lymphocytic leukemia. Intravesical chemotherapy may be associated with a risk of secondary malignancy.

Erythromelalgia, which is specific for primary thrombocythaemia or polycythaemia with thrombocythaemia, is reported in a case of primary myelofibrosis at platelet counts of between 350 and 450 X 10(9)/l. In addition, the unexpected occurrence of thrombocythaemic erythromelalgia associated with Ph1 chromosome positive micromegakaryocytic myelofibrosis and with myelodysplastic syndrome type II is described. Therefore it is concluded that erythromelalgia may occur in all variants of myeloproliferative disease as well as myelodysplastic syndrome as long as they present with thrombocythaemia.
