CONTEXT.­: Distinguishing metastatic carcinomas from mesotheliomas or reactive mesothelial cells in pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial effusions is a common diagnostic problem cytopathologists encounter. OBJECTIVE.­: To perform the first meta-analysis on the pooled diagnostic accuracy of claudin-4 immunochemistry in serous effusion cytopathology. DESIGN.­: This report followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines for diagnostic test accuracy studies. Three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library) were searched until October 9, 2023, followed by study selection using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria and data extraction. The study quality assessment was performed by using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 (QUADAS-2) tool. Statistical analysis was performed by using R to calculate the pooled sensitivity and specificity of claudin-4 immunochemistry. In addition, the diagnostic odds ratio was measured, representing the odds ratio of a positive result indicating a carcinoma rather than a mesothelial process in serous effusion cytology. RESULTS.­: Fourteen observational studies, published between 2011 and 2023, fulfilled the selection criteria and were included. All 14 studies used the 3E2C1 clone. Claudin-4 immunochemistry showed a high diagnostic accuracy in serous effusion cytology. The pooled sensitivity and specificity were 98.02% (95% CI, 93.96%-99.37%) and 99.72% (95% CI, 97.36%-99.97%), respectively. Lastly, the pooled diagnostic odds ratio was 1660.5 (95% CI, 760.0-3627.8) and no evidence of statistical heterogeneity between the included studies was found (I2 = 0%, τ2 = 0). CONCLUSIONS.­: Claudin-4 may be used as a single pan-carcinoma immunochemical biomarker in the differential diagnosis between metastatic carcinomas and mesotheliomas or reactive mesothelial cells in serous effusion cytology.

INTRODUCTION: Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) specimens are widely utilized for the diagnosis and molecular testing of various cancers. We performed a comparative proteomic analysis of three different sample types, including breast FNAC, core needle biopsy (CNB), and surgical resection tissues. Our goal was to evaluate the suitability of FNAC for in-depth proteomic analysis and for identifying potential therapeutic biomarkers in breast cancer. METHODS: High-throughput proteomic analysis was conducted on matched FNAC, CNB, and surgical resection tissue samples obtained from breast cancer patients. The protein identification, including currently established or promising therapeutic targets, was compared among the three different sample types. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis was also performed on all matched samples. RESULTS: Compared to tissue samples, FNAC testing revealed a comparable number of proteins (7,179 in FNAC; 7,196 in CNB; and 7,190 in resection samples). Around 85% of proteins were mutually identified in all sample types. FNAC, along with CNB, showed a positive correlation between the number of enrolled tumor cells and identified proteins. In the GO analysis, the FNAC samples demonstrated a higher number of genes for each pathway and GO terms than tissue samples. CCND1, CDK6, HER2, and IGF1R were found in higher quantities in the FNAC compared to tissue samples, while TUBB2A was only detected in the former. CONCLUSION: FNAC is suitable for high-throughput proteomic analysis, in addition to an emerging source that could be used to identify and quantify novel cancer biomarkers.

This study aims to provide a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies examining the perceptions and experiences of nurses who cared for patients in dedicated COVID-19 hospitals in South Korea. We searched key health databases (RISS, KISS, KMbase, NDSL, KoreaMed, DBpia, PubMed, CINAHL, and Cochrane) from September to November 2023. We reviewed and analyzed articles using a thematic synthesis approach. The quality of the studies was ascertained using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program checklist for qualitative research. Ultimately, 13 studies involving 219 nurses were included in the final review. Six major themes and thirteen subthemes emerged. During the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic, nurses were able to overcome difficult situations through their interactions with patients, sense of a professional mission, and commitment to nursing. Most importantly, they persevered through their collaboration and closeness with fellow nurses, despite confusion about their professional identity, the ethical dilemmas they faced in patient care, and the conflicting attitudes of their social support system. To prepare for future infectious disease outbreaks, a multifaceted support system should be established to enable nurses to have positive interactions with their families, colleagues, and patients, which have become central to their resilience.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have identified graded oxygen saturation targets to prevent retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a serious complication in preterm infants. We aimed to analyze the critical period of oxygen supplementation and/or invasive ventilation associated with severe ROP. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included neonates with a gestational age (GA) < 29 weeks. Participants were divided into two groups: treated retinopathy and untreated/no retinopathy. Time-weighted average FiO2 (TWAFiO2) and weekly invasive ventilation were compared between groups by postnatal age (PNA) and postmenstrual age (PMA). The association of treated retinopathy with TWAFiO2 and invasive ventilation was analyzed. RESULTS: Data from 287 neonates were analyzed; 98 were treated for ROP and had lower GAs (25.5 vs. 27.4 weeks, p < 0.01) and lower birthweights (747.6 vs. 1014 g, p < 0.001) than those with untreated/no ROP. TWAFiO2 was higher from PMA 26-34 weeks, except for PMA 31 weeks in treated ROP, and higher in the first nine weeks of life in treated ROP. On multiple logistic regression, TWAFiO2 and invasive ventilation were associated with ROP treatment during the first seven weeks PNA. Invasive ventilation was associated with ROP treatment from PMA 26-31 weeks; no association was found for TWAFiO2 and PMA. CONCLUSIONS: Amount of oxygen supplementation and/or invasive ventilation during the first 7 weeks of life or up to 31 weeks PMA was associated with development of severe ROP. This period might be candidate timing for strict oxygen supplementation strategies in preterm infants, while concerns of mortality with low oxygen supplementation should be further explored.

Immunophenotypic analysis of breast cancer microenvironment is gaining attraction as a clinical tool improving breast cancer patient stratification. The aim of this study is to evaluate proliferating CD8 + including CD8 + TCF1 + Τ cells along with PD-L1 expressing tissue-associated macrophages among different breast cancer subtypes. A well-characterized cohort of 791 treatment-naïve breast cancer patients was included. The analysis demonstrated a distinct expression pattern among breast cancer subtypes characterized by increased CD8 + , CD163 + and CD163 + PD-L1 + cells along with high PD-L1 status and decreased fraction of CD8 + Ki67 + T cells in triple negative (TNBC) and HER2 + compared to luminal tumors. Kaplan-Meier and Cox univariate survival analysis revealed that breast cancer patients with high CD8 + , CD8 + Ki67 + , CD8 + TCF1 + cells, PD-L1 score and CD163 + PD-L1 + cells are likely to have a prolonged relapse free survival, while patients with high CD163 + cells have a worse prognosis. A differential impact of high CD8 + , CD8 + Ki67 + , CD8 + TCF1 + T cells, CD163 + PD-L1 + macrophages and PD-L1 status on prognosis was identified among the various breast cancer subtypes since only TNBC patients experience an improved prognosis compared to patients with luminal A tumors. Conversely, high infiltration by CD163 + cells is associated with worse prognosis only in patients with luminal A but not in TNBC tumors. Multivariate Cox regression analysis in TNBC patients revealed that increased CD8 + [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.542; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.309-0.950; p = 0.032), CD8 + TCF1 + (HR = 0.280; 95% CI 0.101-0.779; p = 0.015), CD163 + PD-L1 + (HR: 0.312; 95% CI 0.112-0.870; p = 0.026) cells along with PD-L1 status employing two different scoring methods (HR: 0.362; 95% CI 0.162-0.812; p = 0.014 and HR: 0.395; 95% CI 0.176-0.884; p = 0.024) were independently linked with a lower relapse rate. Multivariate analysis in Luminal type A patients revealed that increased CD163 + was independently associated with a higher relapse rate (HR = 2.360; 95% CI 1.077-5.170; p = 0.032). This study demonstrates that the evaluation of the functional status of CD8 + T cells in combination with the analysis of immunosuppressive elements could provide clinically relevant information in different breast cancer subtypes.

In the setting of pronounced inflammation, changes in the epithelium may overlap with neoplasia, often rendering it impossible to establish a diagnosis with certainty in daily clinical practice. Here, we discuss the underlying molecular mechanisms driving tissue response during persistent inflammatory signaling along with the potential association with cancer in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, extrahepatic bile ducts, and liver. We highlight the histopathological challenges encountered in the diagnosis of chronic inflammation in routine practice and pinpoint tissue-based biomarkers that could complement morphology to differentiate reactive from dysplastic or cancerous lesions. We refer to the advantages and limitations of existing biomarkers employing immunohistochemistry and point to promising new markers, including the generation of novel antibodies targeting mutant proteins, miRNAs, and array assays. Advancements in experimental models, including mouse and 3D models, have improved our understanding of tissue response. The integration of digital pathology along with artificial intelligence may also complement routine visual inspections. Navigating through tissue responses in various chronic inflammatory contexts will help us develop novel and reliable biomarkers that will improve diagnostic decisions and ultimately patient treatment.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a life-threatening condition in newborns. We aimed to assess the clinical and echocardiographic responses of term and preterm infants to treprostinil. METHODS: This retrospective study included newborns diagnosed with PH and treated with treprostinil as additional therapy after inhaled nitric oxide administration in the neonatal intensive care unit of a tertiary center. Term and preterm infants were compared in terms of echocardiographic findings and clinical findings 4 weeks after treprostinil treatment. RESULTS: During the study period, 11 term and 18 preterm infants were diagnosed with PH and received treprostinil. There were no differences in the echocardiographic findings of interventricular septal deviation, direction of shunt, and ratio of estimated pulmonary artery pressure over systolic blood pressure. Congenital diaphragmatic hernia was the most common condition occurring upon PH diagnosis among term infants, while severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia was the most common in preterm infants. Improvements in echocardiographic findings were more pronounced in term infants than in preterm infants (100% vs. 55.6%, P = 0.012). The inhaled nitric oxide dose was gradually tapered for term infants and was lower than that for preterm infants at 1, 2, and 3 weeks after treprostinil. CONCLUSION: Intravenous treprostinil could be an adjuvant therapy option for term and preterm infants with PH, especially for those who cannot receive oral medication. The efficacy and safety of treprostinil in this population with PH should be investigated further.

Distant metastasis is the leading cause of death in breast cancer (BC). The timing of distant metastasis differs according to subtypes of BCs and there is a need for identification of biomarkers for the prediction of early and late metastasis. To identify biomarker candidates whose abundance level can discriminate metastasis types, we performed a high-throughput proteomics assay using tissue samples from BCs with no metastasis, late metastasis, and early metastasis, processed data with machine learning-based feature selection, and found that low VWA5A could be responsible for shorter duration of metastasis-free interval. Low expression of VWA5A gene in METABRIC cohort was associated with poor survival in BCs, especially in hormone receptor (HR)-positive BCs. In-vitro experiments confirmed tumor suppressive effect of VWA5A on BCs in HR+ and triple-negative BC cell lines. We found that expression of VWA5A can be assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) on archival tissue samples. Decreasing nuclear expression of VWA5A was significantly associated with advanced T stage and lymphatic invasion in consecutive BCs of all subtypes. We discovered lower expression of VWA5A as the potential biomarker for metastasis-prone BCs, and our results support the clinical utility of VWA5A IHC, as an adjunctive tools for prognostication of BCs.

AIM: To compare the immunochemical expression of EGFR, PD-L1, and the mismatch repair (MMR) proteins MLH1, PMS2, MSH2, and MSH6 between matched malignant effusions obtained before and following the administration of chemotherapy in patients with high-grade serous tubo-ovarian carcinoma (HGSC). METHODS: In the enrolled HGSCs, matched formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded cell blocks (CBs) from effusions sampled before (treatment-naïve patients) and during recurrence (following chemotherapy administration), in addition to their matched HGSC tissues obtained from the ovaries at initial diagnosis (treatment-naïve patients), were subjected to EGFR, PD-L1, and MMR immunochemical analysis. RESULTS: EGFR was more often overexpressed in effusions obtained after chemotherapy administration compared to both effusions (100% vs. 57.1%) and their matched tubo-ovarian tumors (100% vs. 7.1%) from treatment-naïve patients, respectively. EGFR immunochemistry was concordant in just 9.1% of the effusions sampled during recurrence and their paired ovarian samples before recurrence. Whereas all HGSC treatment-naïve samples (ovarian lesions and effusions) were PD-L1 negative, 3/11 (27.3%) malignant effusions obtained during recurrence showed PD-L1 overexpression. Lastly, none of the tested HGSC samples exhibited MMR deficiency. CONCLUSION: Measuring biomarkers using CBs from malignant effusions may provide clinicians with significant information related to HGSC prognosis and therapy selection, especially in patients with resistance to chemotherapy.

Antimony (Sb), a non-essential metalloid, can be released into the environment through various industrial activities. Sb(III) is considered more toxic than Sb(V), but Sb(III) can be immobilized through the precipitation of insoluble Sb2S3 or Sb2O3. In the subsurface, Sb redox chemistry is largely controlled by microorganisms; however, the exact mechanisms of Sb(V) reduction to Sb(III) are still unclear. In this study, a new strain of Sb(V)-reducing bacterium, designated as strain YZ-1, that can respire Sb(V) as a terminal electron acceptor was isolated from Sb-contaminated soils. 16S-rRNA gene sequencing of YZ-1 revealed high similarity to a known Fe(III)-reducer, Rhodoferax ferrireducens. XRD and XAFS analyses revealed that bioreduction of Sb(V) to Sb(III) proceed through a transition from amorphous valentinite to crystalline senarmontite (allotropes of Sb2O3). Genomic DNA sequencing found that YZ-1 possesses arsenic (As) metabolism genes, including As(V) reductase arsC. The qPCR analysis showed that arsC was highly expressed during Sb(V)-reduction by YZ-1, and thus is proposed as the potential Sb(V) reductase in YZ-1. This study provides new insight into the pathways and products of microbial Sb(V) reduction and demonstrates the potential of a newly isolated bacterium for Sb bioremediation.

BACKGROUND: The role of HER2 amplification level in predicting the effectiveness of HER2-directed therapies has been established. However, its association with survival outcomes in advanced HER2-positive breast cancer treated with dual HER2-blockade remains unexplored. METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective study of patients with advanced HER2-positive breast cancer treated with first-line pertuzumab, trastuzumab, and docetaxel. The primary objective was to ascertain the relationship between treatment outcomes and the level of HER2 amplification by in situ hybridization (ISH). RESULTS: A total of 152 patients were included with a median follow-up duration of 50.0 months. Among the 78 patients who received ISH, a higher HER2/CEP17 ratio correlated significantly with longer PFS (HR 0.50, p = 0.022) and OS (HR 0.28, p = 0.014) when dichotomized by the median. A higher HER2 copy number also correlated significantly with better PFS (HR 0.35, p < 0.001) and OS (HR 0.27, p = 0.009). In multivariate analysis, the HER2/CEP17 ratio was an independent predictive factor for PFS (HR 0.66, p = 0.004) and potentially for OS (HR 0.64, p = 0.054), along with HER2 copy number (PFS HR 0.85, p = 0.004; OS HR 0.84, p = 0.049). Furthermore, the correlation between HER2 amplification level by ISH with PFS and OS was consistent across the HER2 IHC 1+/2+ and 3+ categories. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to report that a higher level of HER2 amplification by ISH is associated with improved PFS and OS in advanced HER2-positive breast cancer treated with dual HER2-blockade. Notably, HER2 amplification level had a predictive role regardless of IHC results. Even in patients with HER2 protein expression of 3+, treatment outcome to HER2-directed therapy was dependent on the level of HER2 gene amplification.

(1) Background: Digital addiction has been a global concern, with college students becoming increasingly vulnerable to it. The detrimental psycho-physiological effects of digital addiction have raised concerns regarding college students' health. This descriptive correlational study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of digital addiction and identify influencing factors among college students, such as body shape satisfaction, time management, and psychological health. (2) Methods: Data were collected from 199 students at a university in Seoul, South Korea, from 30 May to 13 June 2023. The Digital Addiction Scale (DAS), Time Structure Questionnaire (TSQ), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), and Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) were used for the assessment. Data (N = 199) were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. (3) Results: The mean score for digital addiction was 54 ± 12, with scores ranging from 23.0 to 89.0. Digital addiction had a significant positive correlation with body shape satisfaction (r = 0.156, p = 0.028) and a negative correlation with time management (r = -0.500, p < 0.001). In the stepwise multiple regression model of digital addiction (adjusted R2 = 0.285, p < 0.001), subfactors of body shape satisfaction (fear of fatness ß = -0.280, body dissatisfaction ß = 0.401) and time management (effective organization ß = -0.211, persistence ß = -0.209, past orientation ß = -0.165) were statistically significant. (4) Conclusions: Body shape satisfaction and time management are important factors influencing digital addiction among college students. However, it does not establish a direct causal relationship. The findings indicate that there is a statistical association or connection between these factors, but they do not definitively state that body shape satisfaction or time management directly cause digital addiction. To decrease digital addiction in this population, interventions should aim to improve body shape satisfaction and time management.

This study aimed to confirm the relationship between resilience, meaning in life, and post-traumatic growth (PTG) among nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the mediating effect of meaning in life on the relationship between resilience and PTG was examined. A cross-sectional descriptive research design was used. The participants were 220 nurses at COVID-19-designated hospitals in Seoul. Descriptive statistics, a t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis, hierarchical regression, and SPSS PROCESS macro (Model 4) were used for data analyses. As a result of the study, resilience and meaning in life each had a significant positive effect on PTG. In addition, the indirect effect of meaning in life was significant, suggesting that meaning in life partially mediated the relationship between resilience and PTG. The results indicate that nurses' resilience directly contributes to the improvement of PTG, and this relationship is further strengthened indirectly through the presence of meaning in life. Therefore, it is suggested that strategies should be developed to enhance resilience and promote a sense of meaning in the profession in order to support the mental health and foster growth among nurses.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop a novel combined immune score (CIS)-based model assessing prognosis in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). METHODS: The expression of eight immune markers (PD-1, PD-L1, PD-L2, IDO, TIM3, OX40, OX40L, and H7-H2) was assessed with immunohistochemistry on the tumor cells (TCs) and immune cells (ICs) of 227 TNBC cases, respectively, and subsequently associated with selected clinicopathological parameters and survival. Data retrieved from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were further examined to validate our findings. RESULTS: All immune markers were often expressed in TCs and ICs, except for PD-1 which was not expressed in TCs. In ICs, the expression of all immune markers was positively correlated between one another, except between PD-L1 and OX40, also TIM3 and OX40. In ICs, PD-1, PD-L1, and OX40L positive expression was associated with a longer progression-free survival (PFS; p = 0.040, p = 0.020, and p = 0.020, respectively). In TCs, OX40 positive expression was associated with a shorter PFS (p = 0.025). Subsequently, the TNBC patients were classified into high and low combined immune score groups (CIS-H and CIS-L), based on the expression levels of a selection of biomarkers in TCs (TCIS-H or TCIS-L) and ICs (ICIS-H or ICIS-L). The TCIS-H group was significantly associated with a longer PFS (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the ICIS-H group was additionally associated with a longer PFS (p < 0.001) and overall survival (OS; p = 0.001), at significant levels. In the multivariate analysis, both TCIS-H and ICIS-H groups were identified as independent predictors of favorable PFS (p = 0.012 and p = 0.001, respectively). ICIS-H was also shown to be an independent predictor of favorable OS (p = 0.003). The analysis of the mRNA expression data from TCGA also validated our findings regarding TNBC. CONCLUSION: Our novel TCIS and ICIS exhibited a significant prognostic value in TNBC. Additional research would be needed to strengthen our findings and identify the most efficient prognostic and predictive biomarkers for TNBC patients.

Background and Purpose: Dual walking task such as crossing over an obstacle may serve as an excellent tool for predicting early cognitive decline. Thus, this study aimed to investigate correlation between walking while crossing over an obstacle and executive functions under different gait phases to validate the use of walking with an obstacle for predicting early cognitive decline. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 48 elderly individuals from 2 day-care centers and 3 welfare-centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi, Korea. Executive function tests (Trail Making Test, Stroop test) and dual walking tests (gait speed, cadence, stance time, gait cycle time) were performed and compared using partial correlation analysis. Results: There were significant correlations between executive function and most of the gait variables (stance time, cadence, and gait cycle time) (p<0.05) when crossing over an obstacle while walking. Especially, stance time exhibited significant correlations with most executive functions (p<0.05). Conclusions: When evaluating executive function during walking with an obstacle, post-obstacle-crossing phase and stance time need to be observed.

RATIONALE: The comprehensive analysis of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues is essential for retrospective clinical studies. However, detecting low-abundance proteins and obtaining proteome-scale data from FFPE samples pose analytical challenges in mass spectrometry-based proteomics. To overcome this challenge, our study focuses on implementing an isobaric labeling approach to improve the detection of low-abundance target proteins in FFPE tissues, thereby enhancing the qualitative and quantitative analysis. METHODS: We employed an isobaric labeling approach utilizing synthetic peptides or proteins to enable the qualitative and quantitative measurement of target proteins in FFPE tissue samples. To achieve this, we incorporated tandem mass tag (TMT)-labeled recombinant proteins or synthetic peptides into TMT-labeled metastatic breast cancer FFPE tissues. Through this strategy, we successfully detect coexisting CD276 (B7-H3) and CD147 proteins while identifying over 6000 proteins using targeted analysis of individual FFPE tissue sections. RESULTS: Our findings provide compelling evidence that the incorporation of isobaric labeling, along with the inclusion of TMT-labeled peptides or proteins, greatly enhances the detection of target proteins in FFPE tissue samples. By employing this approach, we were able to obtain robust qualitative measurements of CD276 and CD147 proteins, showcasing its effectiveness in identifying more than 6000 proteins in FFPE samples. CONCLUSIONS: The integration of an isobaric labeling approach, in conjunction with synthetic peptides or proteins, presents a valuable strategy for enhancing the detection and validation of target proteins in FFPE tissue analysis. This technique holds immense potential in retrospective clinical studies, as it enables comprehensive analysis of low-abundance proteins and facilitating proteome-scale investigations in FFPE samples. By leveraging this methodology, researchers can unlock new insights into disease mechanisms and advance our understanding of complex biological processes.

OBJECTIVES: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for the estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) biomarkers has prognostic and therapeutic value in breast cancer, while it facilitates molecular subtyping. This study aimed to identify subtype discordance and its clinical significance among different phases of breast cancer evolution, focusing on effusion cytology samples diagnosed with malignancy. METHODS: Our electronic archive was searched for all effusion cases diagnosed as breast carcinomas within a pre-defined period (January 2018-October 2021), and their cell blocks (CBs) were subjected to ER, PR, and HER2 IHC or in situ hybridization. Furthermore, information regarding the same biomarkers from previously obtained tissue specimens of these patients was extracted. RESULTS: Only 2/76 (2.6%) of the breast cancer patients analyzed showed a malignant effusion at their initial presentation. The triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) phenotype was found significantly more often at effusion CBs, compared to their paired biopsies received during initial diagnosis (30/70 vs 16/70; p<0.001). In addition, the presence of TNBC subtype was significantly associated with an earlier development of a malignant effusion, more specifically at initial diagnosis (P<0.001; log-rank test), at first recurrence/metastasis (either solid or effusion) (P=0.012; log-rank test), at effusion (P=0.007; log-rank test), and at any tumor evolution phase (P=0.009; log-rank test). CONCLUSION: Serous effusion cytology provides high-quality material for ancillary techniques, especially when CBs are prepared, reflecting cancer heterogeneity.

This exploratory study aimed to identify factors that may influence nurses' turnover intentions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data were collected during January 2023 from 250 nurses and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. Among the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, nursing care and working with personal protective equipment significantly impacted the turnover intention. Among the independent variables, compassion satisfaction, burnout, effort-reward ratio, and psychological distress were significant, with an explanatory power of 43.3%. Among the subjects, 86.4% (216 people) showed a moderate or high burnout level because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and burnout seemed to have a significant impact on turnover intention. Therefore, to lower the turnover intention of nurses, burnout should be prevented, and managers should create an environment where nurses can receive a balanced reward for their efforts.

Liquid fossil fuels, collectively known as total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), are highly toxic and frequently leak into subsurface environments due to anthropogenic activities. As an in-situ biological remedial option for TPH contamination, aerobic TPH biodegradation is limited due to oxygen's low solubility in water, and because it is consumed quickly by aerobic bacteria. Thus, we investigated the potential of anaerobic TPH degradation by indigenous fermenting bacteria and Fe(III)-reducing bacteria. Twenty 6-10 m soil cores were collected from a closed military base subject to ongoing TPH contamination since the 1980s. Physicochemical and microbial properties were determined at 0.5-m intervals in each core. To assess the relationship between TPH degradation and microbial Fe(III) reduction, soil samples were grouped into high-TPH (>500 mg kg-1) and high-Fe(II) (>450 mg kg-1), high-TPH and low-Fe(II), low-TPH and high-Fe(II), and low-TPH and low-Fe(II) groups. Alpha diversity was significantly lower in high-TPH groups than in low-TPH groups, suggesting that high TPH concentrations exerted a strong selective pressure on bacterial communities. In the high-TPH and low-Fe(II) group, fermenting bacteria, including Microgenomatia and Chlamydiae, were more abundant, suggesting that TPH biodegradation occurred via fermentation. In the high-TPH and high-Fe(II) group, Fe(III)-reducing bacteria, including Geobacter and Zoogloea, were more abundant, suggesting that microbial Fe(III) reduction enhances TPH biodegradation. In contrast, the fermenting and/or Fe(III)-reducing bacteria were not statistically abundant in the low-TPH groups.

Adaptive behavior in the environment requires a high level of cognitive control to bias limited processing resources to behaviorally significant stimuli. Such control has been associated with a set of brain regions located in the fronto-parietal cortex (multiple demand network), whose activity was found to increase as the control demand for a task increases. In contrast, another set of regions, default mode network regions, were found to be deactivated during top-down processing of task stimuli. Despite this dissociation in their activation amplitudes, it is possible that activation patterns of these regions commonly encode specific task features. In two independent neuroimaging datasets, involving a total of 40 human samples, we found that the performance of an attentional task evoked positive activity of the MDN and deactivation of the DMN. Consistent with previous studies, task features could be decoded from the fronto-parietal cognitive regions. Importantly, the regions of the DMN also encoded task features when the task set had to be rapidly reconfigured in a transient, trial-by-trial manner, along with the MDN regions. These results suggest that the two separate brain networks ultimately co-ordinate for the effective establishment of top-down cognitive control.
